WELCOME Welcome to 2014 at Bridport Arts Centre - the year we celebrate our 40th Anniversary! We will be focusing our celebrations in the autumn season, but keep an eye out for announcements of other special events that may be happening during the year. 40 years is a great achievement and we look forward to celebrating it with you. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to our Programme Manager Margie Barbour who left the Arts Centre at the end of 2013, and to acknowledge the huge contribution she made to the development of our programme over five years. I’ve now taken on the programming lead for the Arts Centre and am looking forward to building on our long tradition of bringing the best of theatre, dance, music and spoken word to Bridport. Travel back to Dorset, 1834, a time when wages are being cut and civil liberties are threatened... You’ll meet George Loveless and his no-nonsense wife Betsy. George was the leader of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, a group who were sent to Australia in 1834 for swearing a secret oath to form a union and fight against wage cuts inflicted by the local landowner. Betsy tells the story of his transportation to Australia, how the women left at home survived with little or no money, and how they worked together, against the odds, to bring the men back to England. With music developed by folk legend John Kirkpatrick and plenty of opportunities for laugh out loud participation, it will be a rousing evening of entertainment for all. We Will Be Free was originally commissioned for the Tolpuddle Festival, went straight to Edinburgh and has been touring ever since.

With unflinching honesty and an eerily detached workmanship, two knackermen investigate the pitfalls of being high up the evolutionary chain. While dispatching the sick, lame or just plain old their own mortality is suddenly and sharply brought into focus. Combining documentary material from veterinary surgeries, farms, abattoirs, hospitals and homes with beautiful puppetry and new writing this show tells a moving and darkly comic tale about the only certainty in life. Expect gallows humour and a lightness of touch. This play is funny, visually impressive and aims to be moving without being prescriptive. You will be pushed to find a performance more original, powerful and challenging than For Their Own Good.

Georges Feydeau’s high spirited romp Sauce For The Goose is stuffed with preening characters knitting their legs in sexual frustration. Its heady mix of passions, pace and pleasure are the perfect mix for a good night out. The plot is simple: Lucienne is being pursued by the married Pontagnac, who is astounded to discover that she is already married to his friend Vatelin. Lucienne has sworn to be faithful as long as her husband remains so too. But then a keen old ‘indiscretion’ of her husband’s arrives with her own husband from Germany in tow. Untrustworthy husbands, betrayed wives, artful servants and crazed Germans demonstrate why the "naughty nineties" were so named, as master French farceur Feydeau's sparkling play switches from riotous farce to barbed social satire. This exuberant play is brought to life by a new generation of talent fresh from one of Britain’s finest drama schools.

And they liked Bridport so much that they returned for a development week at the Arts Centre and want to give us the chance to see their work in progress before it goes on tour. Tell one tell all.

Meet Deepack. He’s a wealthy investment banker and thereby a dislikeable character. He enjoys casinos and champagne, but life is spiraling out of control... and his fate is in your hands. Following a game show format, the audience is introduced to a host who gives everyone two cards, A and B. Should he take out a girl? Or should he go out with his friends? Vote for A or B – you decide. Will you encourage him to be sensible or deliberately egg him on to see what bad stuff will happen? Told through Bharahanatyam, a South Indian dance style that communicates through gesture. This is the show to get you involved, it’s accessible, following a fun storyline. THE BUTTERCUP AND THE CRUTCH PLUS A LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT Saturday 26 Apr, 7.30pm Tickets: £10 Members | £8 Concessions Age guidance: Suitable for ages 12+
A double bill that tells a human and truthful story of love and hope. The Crutch is about an intense and unequal relationship of need. A girl and a guy take to the stage to tell their story through physical and visual interaction, at times funny, surprising and sad. We see their attempts to fix something that is fundamentally broken fail. It shows what it’s like to support someone while you are falling apart yourself. The Buttercup is a more personal journey that asks: ‘what lifts you when you are at your lowest point?’ ending on a note of hope and lightness.

SONGBIRD PLUS SUPPORT FROM PORTICO Friday 7 Feb, 8.30pm Tickets: £8 Advance Discover a collection of songs by Bridport based Steve Jones and Chloe Evans-Lipett at the launch of their new album Songbird. Standing somewhere between the old and the new; the music has a jazzy bluesy feel to it, at the same time it has elements of bright and brilliant commercial pop. The album features ten local musicians including Dan Anderson, Laurie Higgins, Jack Revy, Kez Byth, Michael Grew and Stompin’ Dave. At least five of these musicians will be joining them on stage, getting as close to the original sound as possible. The duo originally came together touring covers including old jazz standards. However, a sudden onset of health problems meant that they were unable to gig. The two of them decided to continue with the recording - but this time by writing their own songs. The music on Songbird has been informed and enriched by their many experiences, showing that adversity can open doors as much as it can close them.

POLICE DOG HOGAN Saturday 17 May, 8pm Tickets: Advance – £12/£11 Members and Concessions On the door – £14/£13 Members and Concessions Great musicians, great songs; if you’re looking for a brilliant night out Police Dog Hogan’s live shows are for you. The high-energy and eclectic seven-piece, combine fiddle, banjo, mandolin, drums and guitars with knockout four-part harmonies in an exuberant fusing of country, pop, folk, and rocking urban bluegrass. Their songs range from the

wistful and poetic to out-and-out, foot-stomping tales of doomed barbecues, French mustard and falling in love on a Tennessee highway. The Sunday Times has described them as “wonderful”; the Telegraph named them one of its “favourite new bands” and veteran DJ Johnnie Walker praises their gigs as “just a really good, fun time”. Regular onstage guests include Bill Amberg on the jaw harp and once (memorably) Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall on tambourine! If you read the Guardian or the Daily Telegraph or if you travel with Rough Guides then you probably know several of this extraordinary band. Imogen’s unique and heartfelt interpretations of the jazz standard repertoire have made her a popular performer with both audiences and musicians alike.
Andy Williamson is known for blowing exceptionally good tunes on the tenor sax and for his repertoire of somewhat risqué old blues songs. He’s played with his own bands the Honkin’ Hep Cats and Big Buzzard Boogie Band on BBC Radio; and as a sideman with Tom Robinson, Suggs and Martha Reeves & the Vandellas. His versatile style on sax and voice creates an interesting, eclectic and highly enjoyable performance, which will be complemented by Philip Clouts at the piano.

THE SOUND OF BLUE NOTE Friday 23 May, 8pm In the Theatre Tickets: £10 The iconic sound and image of the Blue Note record label in the 50s and 60s pioneered “hard bop”, mixing jazz with soul, blues and gospel. The Sound of Blue Note band faithfully recreates this vibrant music as it would have been heard ‘back in the day’, including tunes by Art Blakey, Horace Silver and Lee Morgan, delivered in a swinging and soulful way guaranteed to have you bobbing your head and tapping your feet.

A WORLD OF DREAMS 150 YEARS OF SCREEN ADAPTATION Saturday 1 Mar – Saturday 5 Apr Audiences and filmmakers have always been fascinated by stories – and particularly by stories that are somehow familiar. Even before cinema, popular tales were being adapted for the magic lantern and as film began classics and popular fiction were immediately plundered for material. Ever since books and plays have been transformed from the page to the screen – in some cases multiple times. Leading up to the Art Centre's From Page to Screen Film Festival, this exhibition showcases over a century of artifacts related to adaptation. From the amazing collections of The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum at the University of Exeter, these show the continuing obsession with translating words into images. Saturday 12 Apr – Saturday 10 May Christopher Winter creates paintings that appear at first to be simple depictions of idyllic scenes but on a second glance challenge us to reassess our initial impressions. Our surroundings and our own sense of reality are brought into question and begin to unravel. The English artist now residing in Berlin has recreated his own displacement in his paintings. Rendered in postcard-like tints, the undulating mountainous landscapes become a devil’s playground for Teutonic Gothic menace. Winter exults in the subliminal—the weightless borderline between innocence and experience, the familiar and the uncanny, the perceiver and the perceived.

Combining elements of painting and photography, Derya aims to create an illusion reflecting the familiarity of our physical world. Underpinned by childhood memories, these fragmented images of dream-like narratives and playful characters are often based on real events and experiences thrown up in daily life. Macro details of enlarged photographic images provide the background, overlaid with painted collages and features designed to look like images torn from story books. The Café features Interrogating Landscapes Part 1, the first in a series of works exploring local landmark sites. Organised by Dorset Visual Arts, the exhibition is part of the Drawing Inspiration project, exploring landscape art across the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. 13 – 23 May This two-week event will explore and debate the use and misuse of cars in everyday life through the lens of visual arts. Responding creatively to data and research derived from traffic flow analysis in Dorset and Hampshire, six artists will show work alongside the results of a research project, Sixth Sense Transport, investigating a social and shared space for people who use cars and want to reduce their carbon footprint. Set on Mayday, a group of misfit young people have been chosen to close the day’s festivities. As their rehearsal breaks down, they begin to suspect they’ve been chosen for a far darker purpose… Each year the National Theatre invites ten writers to create new plays for young people to perform. This spring 230 youth theatre companies will present the premieres of these plays in venues from Scotland to Cornwall and Northern Ireland to Norfolk. Each company will also perform at one of 26 Connections festivals in professional theatres across the country, and ten companies will go on to perform at the National Theatre. Connections celebrates great new writing for the stage – and the energy, commitment and talent of young theatre-makers.
