Metta Theatre
ALICE Wednesday 28 May, 6pm Tickets: £10/£9 Members | £8 Concessions (inc children) | £32 Family Age guidance: Suitable for 4+ | Duration: 60 minutes (no interval)
A World War One adaptation of Alice in Wonderland that will astonish the whole family. While bombs rain down outside in 1915, Alice takes refuge in her cellar, rediscovering her childhood amongst the broken toys of her past. As the objects around her come to life, we are transported to a magical world of talking rabbits, mad hatters and savage queens. Based on Lewis Carroll’s literary classic and the real life Alice who inspired it, this poignant new play is brought imaginatively to life with Metta’s trademark mix of theatre, puppetry and object manipulation.

THE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE Wednesday 4 Jun, 7.30pm Tickets: £12/£11 Members | £10 Concessions
Friday 20 & Saturday 21 Jun, 7.30pm Tickets: £12/£10 Members | £8 Concessions £35 Family 2 Adult & 2 Concessions 1856. A tale of jealousy and passion. An ordinary woman and her ordinary husband, a hatchet grabbed in haste, a murder, a wrongly accused horse, a black silk dress, the hangman from London and the mob at the hang-fair who gawp in glee. Expect the unexpected in Angel Exit’s latest original drama based on the life and times of Martha Brown, the last woman publicly hanged in Dorset.
Expect high drama and wit in this production of the libel and criminal trials of Oscar Wilde.
Presented in the company's rich visual style this show is spliced through with wicked humour, an original score and macabre songs.
14 February 1895 was the triumphant opening night of The Importance of Being Earnest and the zenith of Wilde's career. Less than 100 days later, he found himself a common prisoner sentenced to two years hard labour.
Also at Dorchester Arts and The Marine.
So what exactly happened? Based on the original court transcripts, we get to see the most flamboyant character of his age in the flesh and in his own words. The play charts his downfall with wit, humanity and defiance. Also at Dorchester Arts.
“Angel Exit... is weaving stories with more than a little theatrical magic... There is so much vivid theatricality and inventiveness at work here that I am already looking forward to its next show.”

BLINDSPOT
A fundraiser in aid of the Bridport Arts Centre building fund
Saturday 28 Jun, 7.30pm Tickets: £10 Written by Andrew Rutherford, Directed by Spencer Butler In July 2003, in the aftermath of the Iraq War, the death of Dr David Kelly shocked the country and presented the Blair government with one of its most explosive crises. There has never been an inquest and many questions about what took place in the Oxfordshire countryside remain unanswered. Blind Spot takes place over four days, and the activities of the police and security services are at the play’s centre. What was the purpose of the police operation, started before Dr Kelly left home on his fateful walk? And who was the one-pair-of-eyes American intelligence officer? ‘His efforts in his specialist field [weapons of mass destruction inspector] have had consequences of international significance’ citation for Dr Kelly’s CMG, 1996.

He thinks it’s time they remember what it’s like to have a little fun. A one-man epic tale where ancient myths collide with the modern world. And bring a bottle – it’s gonna be a hell of a party.

So this is a performance that you’re going to have fun at… whether you bring a child or not.

Comprising three fabulous young Breton musicians this is wicked music, full of energy. Breton roots and new technology used in a really sympathetic way. You have acoustic guitar (though you might be surprised by the sound) fantastic Bombarde (Breton clarinet/shawm type instrument) and great loops samples and all played live. With seven studio albums behind them, playing to huge audiences around Brittany and France it’s time to see them in England. They will be performing from their latest album Awen, and as always you can expect lots of energy and movement. Massive music, massive fun and great live! If you like rock it will be right up your street, it’s Breton with a bit of oomph to it.

THE PAPERBOYS
AN EVENING WITH JOHN BRAMWELL (I AM KLOOT)
JOE DRISCOLL AND SEKOU KOUYATE
Wednesday 11 Jun, 8pm Tickets: £12/£11 Members
Saturday 14 Jun, 8pm Tickets: £15/£14 Members & Concessions
Tuesday 24 Jun, 8pm Tickets: £14/£13 Members
I Am Kloot have been performing since 1999, and in that time have garnered major critical acclaim; retained their credible, cult status; and developed a legion of devout fans ‘dedicated to spreading the gospel of I Am Kloot’.
“He doesn’t speak any French, and I speak no English... but through music, we understand.” Sekou Kouyate .
It’s been an incredible couple of years for John with the band, with highlights including picking up a Mercury Music Nomination for Sky at Night, and a number 10 entry into the UK Album Charts for this year’s studio album, Let It All In.
In the port city of Marseilles, home to many a nomadic soul, Joe Driscoll first met Sekou Kouyate. Sekou Kouyate, originally from Conakry, Guinea was raised in a large musical family tradition. Yet, it is not only his traditions, but his ability to transcend them that has set him apart.
Now John is taking a break to perform an exclusive set of intimate solo gigs at some of the country’s best loved venues. The tour is the only place where fans can buy John’s solo record ‘John Bramwell Live At the Trades’ – a one hour recording of John’s legendary gig at the Trades Club in summer 2013.
Joe Driscoll, the man Cee-Lo Green labeled ‘the gangsta with an iron lung’ has been touring steadily for years, spreading his unique fusion of folk and hip-hop. The result is a mad fusion of afrobeat, hip-hop, folk, and reggae, that defies any simple tags or description.

A tribute in words, music & images performed by Trio Paradis The glorious summer of 1914 was shattered by a distant gunshot. Within weeks, millions were on the march, lives turned upside down. Women of World War One tells the stories of women's lives during the Great War through their own words and music. Letters to loved ones, poems rangeing from the light-hearted to the heart-rending, memoirs and diaries of nurses, workers and those left at home, are vividly brought to life, with music by such composers as Rebecca Clarke, Nadia and Lili Boulanger and the recently rediscovered songwriter, Muriel Herbert, all of whom lived through that cataclysmic event. Supported by Somerset Remembers. Also at Dorchester Arts.

OUT OF THE WOODS CELIA DE SERRA AND TIM CRAVEN Saturday 21 Jun – Saturday 19 Jul
A-LEVEL ART SHOW Wednesday 4 Jun – Thursday 12 Jun
Artists’ Talk: Saturday 5 Jul, 2pm, Free
Comments from last year’s show:
“Another stunning display demonstrating the range of talent and depth of vision and expression. Always a pleasure to see such talent on this scale.”
“Lovely work showing great dedication – well worth a visit. The artists of the future.” Art & Design and Textiles are in the Allsop Gallery, with Photography in the Foyer Gallery.
28 Exhibitions
Both artists share allegiance to the emotive qualities of the English pastoral landscape tradition. Their feelings are however more covertly conveyed through their obsessive approach to their subjects, with their forensic investigation of nature perhaps suggesting that they fear its imminent disappearance.
Join Celia de Serra and Tim Craven in the gallery for a conversation about their work and influences.
58TH BRIDPORT ARTS SOCIETY ANNUAL EXHIBITION Tuesday 22 Jul – Saturday 2 Aug Photo credit: Tim Craven, ‘Denny Wood’
Work from the combined sixth-form of The Sir John Colfox and Beaminster Schools, featuring Yr 12 and 13 students studying Art & Design, Textiles and Photography. This long running partnership gives students the opportunity to have their work displayed in a professional gallery and shared with a much wider audience. It never fails to impress.
The lure of the tree as primary subject for Celia de Serra and Tim Craven possesses multiple strands. Both artists are attracted to the potential abstract qualities generated by botanic growth. De Serra aims to stretch her materials to the limit; Craven is drawn to a pattern making aesthetic. Equally important though for both artists is the action of sunlight and how their subjects are animated by it.
Bridport Arts Society welcomes artists of all levels of experience, from beginners to seasoned painters. This range is reflected in its Annual Exhibition, which has been part of the town’s calendar for over 50 years is very popular with local people and tourists alike. A wide variety of media and techniques are displayed, including acrylics, oils, pastels, watercolours, collage and mixed media. The exhibition is open to the public and the great majority of members’ work is for sale. Ten awards are presented to the best artworks in various categories and the public are invited to vote for their favourite exhibit. www.bridportartsociety.org.uk

CYCLES OF LIFE AND DEATH A RETROSPECTIVE OF WORK BY GRETA BERLIN, WITH SVEN BERLIN AND ZENNOR BOX
Saturday 9 Aug – Saturday 20 Sep Greta Berlin was born and brought up in and around St Ives during the 40’s and 50’s and was inspired by potter Bernard Leach and her father, sculptor and artist Sven Berlin, watching them for hours as they formed their work under their hands. Over 40 years, Greta’s career has taken her from ceramics, into stone carving and welded steel structures, and more recently painting. In our 40th year, Bridport Arts Centre is proud to present a retrospective of Greta’s work, alongside that of her late father, and daughter Zennor. This is a rare opportunity to present three distinct but intimately connected artistic voices, brought together for the first time. “My father, Sven Berlin, was the earliest influence, by osmosis, in my artistic development. I lay on the ground as a small child watching an image appear out of the stone, smelling the sulphur with each chisel blow. Now that I am now in the last quarter of my life and career, and Zennor has matured into a fine artist, I felt it to be a good moment to mark his legacy to us both.”
Artists’ Talk: Saturday 13 Sep, 2pm, Free Join Greta and Zennor in the gallery for an informal conversation about their work.
Sven Berlin: Out of the shadows: Tuesday 2 Sep, 6pm, £5 The journey of sculptor, artist and writer Sven Berlin (1911–1999) is truly amazing. A founding member of the St. Ives Art Colony, he was also an adagio dancer, Forward Observer in WWII and lived alongside the Gypsies of the New Forest. Sonia Aarons looks at his life and how it is reflected in his work.

ROBERT POTTS AND HIS ‘LOST’ PHOTO-HISTORY OF BRIDPORT Tuesday 8 – Saturday 19 Jul (Foyer) Pioneer photographer and photojournalist, Robert Potts, worked in the Bridport area before WWI and up until his death in 1972. His pictures survive only as postcards and are now scattered – often unrecognized – in various collections. Here, Carlos Guarita presents thumbnail copies of over a hundred images and asks local people to help in naming, dating and identifying these ‘lost’ pictures that were Potts’ life’s work.
CAROLYN KING 17 Jun – 5 Jul (Foyer) Carolyn’s work with mosaic sculptures have inspired her children’s stories, which are illustrated in egg tempera and pencil. She is now experimenting with puppetry as an additional storytelling medium, informing her artistic practice in new way. Carolyn has a studio in Lyme, to be near her friend Ivor the Ichthyosaur, and is working on a new book. Carolyn will be reading from her book The Fish Lizard of Lyme on Friday 27 June, 4pm. Suitable for children 8+. Free. www.westcountryartists.com
JEANNIE BUCHANAN Tuesday 8 Jul – Saturday 2 Aug (Café) Jeannie paints a range of subjects including landscape, colourful still life and figurative composition using acrylic or oil paint. “I prefer to paint and draw from direct observation of a subject in order to capture and recreate what inspires me. I enjoy the challenge and the process of creating a painting, from the selection of a subject to the consideration of the composition; from the mixing and harmonising colour to the application of layers of paint to a surface.”
ZENNOR BOX Tuesday 5 Aug – Saturday 20 Sep (Café) As part of the Allsop Gallery exhibition, Cycles of Life and Death, the foyer and café galleries will be showing the paintings of Zennor Box, daughter of Greta Berlin and granddaughter of Sven Berlin. At first glance whimsical but with dark and humorous undertones, these works offer us a sideways view of the world that lingers in the mind. Zennor and Greta will be talking about their work on Saturday 6 September, 2pm.

For centuries this challenge has been taken up by writers who have used all the resources language has to offer in order to create a lasting impression of the world around them. Now it is your turn. Hear readings from some of the best nature writing and undertake writing exercises inspired by what you have heard. Part of the day will include a short observational walk in Bridport.
