WELCOME Welcome to our 40th Anniversary brochure, which we wanted to make look and feel as special as the programme inside – a season packed full of great events from some of the best performers and artists around. We welcome back some of our favourite theatre companies including Forest Forge, Shanty and Miracle. We’ve a host of renowned musicians including Lisa Knapp, The Poozies and Darius Brubeck, and top comedians Mark Steel, Rory McGrath and Marcus Brigstocke. It’s Open Book Week in October with events and workshops culminating in the Bridport Prize Awards Ceremony. We also have a special anniversary celebration with our talented community partners presenting the Ruby Ruby Ruby Variety Night. Finally, we are very pleased to announce a new partnership with New York’s Metropolitan Opera and will be screening the live broadcasts of their stunning productions from October. See page 22 for details. This will be my final season for the Arts Centre as I’ll be leaving in the autumn. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the past four years. I feel very fortunate to have been part of the Arts Centre story, and to have worked with some fantastic artists and colleagues, within such a creative community. Happy Anniversary to Bridport Arts Centre, and here’s to the next 40 years.

A first class theatrical delivery on a van that offers a wonky love story about letter writing in a time of instant gratification.
What happens when you want a different life to the one chosen for you? A story of desire, duty, deceit and revenge.
Performances take place inside Mobile Sorting Office 451 – a bright red converted Luton van, crammed with retro-chic details from a much-travelled life, a thousand items of real mail and seating for up to 18 letter-writers and theatre-goers!
Rose cannot remember what came before the house at the edge of the isolated forest. Gwynne says he magicked her out of the flowers, but she’s not so sure. She has played the part of the perfect farmers wife for weak minded Lewis and accepted her lonely existence. Then a stranger comes to town. What lengths will she go to, to escape the life chosen for her?

THE SHIPWRECKED HOUSE Friday 14 Nov, 7.30pm Tickets: £10/£9 Members | £8 Concessions
Outside, a storm is raging. Inside, a darkened room preserves the fragments of a past underneath dust sheets. Sea-shells, voices, yellowing postcards: the flotsam and jetsam of a childhood spent beach-combing on the coast of Brittany. Stories emerge: of treasure found in tidal ponds, and women metamorphosing into serpents. But beneath the floorboards, the creaking groans of whales warn of unsettled futures. In a sparkling one-woman performance that blends poetry with theatre, Anglo-Breton poet Claire Trévien navigates a shifting maritime landscape. Memory and myth from the Celtic fringe are transformed by her surreal, playful poetry – critically acclaimed, and longlisted for the 2013 Guardian First Book Award. Trevien evokes the sounds, sights and rich scents of the sea. But beneath the surface, a violent undercurrent stirs. What will she discover in the sodden debris? Will the storm break in? Supported using public funding by Arts Council England. Produced by Penned in the Margins. Co-commissioned by Ledbury Poetry Festival. * See page 39 for more information

In this world premiere performance, distinguished actor Paul Webster shares the richness and diversity, the humour and the agony of a long life, well lived.
When British poet Daljit Nagra was a little boy, his grannies told him stories of Rama’s quest to rescue his wife Sita from abduction by Raavana, Lord of the Underworld. These stories – The Ramayana – have enchanted Eastern audiences for centuries. Now Nagra has reinterpreted them for a modern, multi-cultural, multi-faith audience with The Retold Ramayana.

A startling Yakut tale of love, magic and initiation from a master storyteller. Martin Shaw is the founder of the Westcountry School of Myth and led the Oral Tradition course at Stanford University. He is internationally regarded as one of the most exciting new teachers of the mythic imagination and became a storyteller whilst living for four years in a black tent on the wilder fringes of England.
“An outrageous piece of magic” David Abram
A flick of the wrist and a slip of the tongue. A winter’s evening of tales for us all from this engaging and witty storyteller. Meet a care-free gypsy, a dead bride and a woman silenced by a curse. There are tales of women who skip, trip and nip through the stories, leaving confusion, mayhem, puzzled mothers and fathers… and a few happily ever afters. This new collection of old stories was first told last Midsummer in the Wood Sisters Red Tent and was received with delight, laughter and a few tears.

WHAT REMAINS AN INSTALLATION BY AND NOW Saturday 27 Sep – Saturday 18 Oct What Remains follows on from Barrow an outdoor installation commissioned for the Inside Out Dorset Festival 2014. Barrow is a ceremonial structure that offers an invitation to relate to death and the processing of it by the living and the land. What Remains is an exploration of the landscape of our emotions surrounding death: it is what remains of the process when we try to render understandable the epic and mundane nature of death. It is an archaeological exploration of monuments, mementos and other meaningful objects excavated from our present. It is a dialogue between artists Mandy Dike and Ben Rigby; and between the absolute nature of death and the ongoing challenge of existence. Artists’ Talk: Saturday 27 Sep, 2pm, FREE Barrow was commissioned by Activate and South Dorset Ridgeway Partnership for the Inside Out Festival, Ridgeway Responses. What Remains was commissioned by Bridport Arts Centre.

JILL KENNINGTON PHOTOGRAPHY
Saturday 15 Nov – Saturday 20 Dec Photography defines Jill Kennington, in her roles both behind and in front of the camera. Abandoning her modelling career in the early 80’s for photography, she created some iconic images of the swinging 60’s heroes – Warhol, Omar Sharif, Lord Snowdon and many more. Although portraiture has been a constant, notably making no distinction between the celebrity and the humble, her beautiful, evocative landscape photographs are deeply personal. Through the spareness of black and white images, stripped of colour and cliché, she gently unpeels the vulnerability of her subject, whether a tree or a person, creating genuine empathy between observed and observer. Artist Talk: Saturday 29 Nov, 2pm, FREE

AN EXHIBITION OF IMAGINATIVE, VISIONARY AND SURREAL ART
Image: David Lawrence, The Messenger
THEATRE FOR THE SOUL Saturday 17 Jan – Saturday 28 Feb 2015 While all art is derived from the imagination, since even realistic paintings of landscapes are translated on to canvas by the artist’s imagination, for certain artists the finished artwork begins and ends with the imagination, with no apparent connection to reality. In truth these “imaginative” artworks have a deeper reality, a reality of the soul. These artworks, whether paintings, sculptures or drawings are the stage on which the artist has placed the characters of his or her soul to play out and display their deepest nature. Such are the works in this exhibition. Curator David Brooke will be showing some of his paintings alongside Tim Carroll, Amanda Popham, David Lawrence, Katarina Rose, Nancy Farmer, David Marl and Kate Walters. Curator’s Talk: Saturday 24 Jan 2015, 2pm, FREE

Tue 7 Oct – Sat 8 Nov Vanessa takes her inspiration from the Dorset Coast where she has lived for most of her life. Now aged 43, early interests in theatre were curtailed by MS in her late teens and she turned to drawing as an alternative means of expression. The idiosyncrasies apparent in her work are evidence of her determined efforts to overcome increasing physical handicaps. Drawing has enabled Vanessa to experience an inner sense of freedom and joy within a frail body.

PAUL SINODHINOS Tue 13 Jan – Sat 21 Feb Born in Montreal, Canada but residing in the UK since 1962 Paul Sinodinos has lived in London, Berkshire, the West Highlands of Scotland and now Bridport. Much of his work is derived from nature: from the shells of the Loch and the ferns in the garden of his house close to Ardnamurchan, to the plants and trees of his home at Longburton where he lived for thirty-five years before arriving close to Bridport four years ago, where more inspiration was waiting.
