WELCOME It is with great pleasure that I introduce the Spring 2015 season at Bridport Arts Centre. We have a wonderfully diverse selection of events coming up over the next four months and we hope you’ll agree that there is something here for everyone. There’s plenty for children and families with Robin’s Winter Adventure and the Boy Who Bit Picasso while music lovers have a broad selection to choose from, from Wille and the Bandits to The Wonderful Sound of the Cinema Organ. Those in search of some light relief can turn to Seann Walsh or Andrew Lawrence or join us one of our regular Comedy Café events. Later in the season we make a nod to the upcoming national election with both Jonny and the Baptists and Steve Richards. Our highly popular Metropolitan Opera screening series continues, while film lovers can enjoy the best of cinema on Thursday and Sundays and look forward to the popular From Page to Screen Festival in April.

The Rousing Story of Des Warren and Ricky Tomlinson; The Story of Builders’ Strike of 1972 & The Shrewsbury Pickets.

This is an uplifting tale of change, bravery and friendship told with puppetry, poetry and music.

In 1972 tens of thousands of building workers won the first national strike in the industry for better pay and conditions. Flying pickets left the contractors reeling. The Tory government and the large building companies wanted revenge, and the ‘Shrewsbury 24’ were put on trial in the following year.

Join Pied Piper Theatre Company for a new play celebrating 30 years of outstanding children’s theatre.

United We Stand tells the events that led to the imprisonment of building workers Des Warren and Ricky Tomlinson of The Royle Family. Directed by musician John Kirkpatrick this performance combines popular and political songs of the early seventies and Ricky Tomlinson’s poems from his time in prison.

THE FEATHER CATCHER

Sunday 8 Mar, 7.30pm Tickets: £10

The tale of the elephant man returns to the stage in an adaptation inspired by the iconic David Lynch film. This profoundly unforgettable show tells the true story of the fabled Joseph Merrick.

Monday 30 Mar, 11am Tickets: £8/£6 Members & Concessions

Counting the Birches takes place over a single day in November 1885 and is set within the Kara prison complex in eastern Siberia. Based on actual events the drama focusses on three remarkable women: two revolutionary prisoners and a mother who has voluntarily joined her daughter. The startling appearance of an American journalist, and his meeting with the prison’s brutal security officer, present the women with alarming dilemmas.

Abandoned as a child, the horribly deformed Joseph, played with “startling subtlety” by Daniel Chrisostomou, survives as a freak-show attraction and medical marvel. But as he sits silently under the stares of London’s high society, it is the world around him that appears grotesque.

Freda loves feathers but there’s one special feather that she just can’t catch on her own. Can Greta help her on her quest and teach her about friendship at the same time?

Nominated for an Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award.

This non-verbal show playfully uses live music and beautiful projection to tell this delightful tale of teamwork. A fun, playful story of friendship, working together and mischievous feathers.

Written by Andrew Rutherford and directed by Spencer Butler who brought Blindspot to the Bridport Arts Centre as a fund-raiser in June 2014.

Get your teeth into Bram Stoker’s classic tale. Written by Andrew McPherson and directed by Simon Harvey, ‘outrageously versatile’ performer David Mynne brings you his one-man performance of... DRACULA! Be warned: this monstrous, disturbing (and completely batty) tale of dark deeds and the UnDead, will thrill and seduce you.

“Listen to them... the children of the night. What music they make!” * See page 38 for more information

Award winning BBC broadcaster and columnist, Steve Richards, takes you behind the scenes of British Politics and the media, the characters, the absurdities, the tragedies. Discover more about Cameron, Miliband, Clegg, what might happen at the next election and why a political journalist has taken to the stage. A hit show at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival: Politics and the media all shook up... Rock N Roll Politics.

Steve is a brilliant mimic, anecdotalist and analyst, carrying lightly the accumulated wisdom of having spoken to the people at the top of British politics for over 20 years.

‘How come the cane taste so sweet, yet feasts on my blood?’ Muscovado is the scorching new play by Matilda Ibini about slavery in Nineteenth Century Barbados. A heady mix of sexual intrigue, piercing choral music and extreme racial tension, Muscovado offers an intimate snapshot of life on the Fairbranch sugar plantation, accompanied by an original musical score and atmospheric soundscape performed live. Muscovado was commissioned and developed by BurntOut Theatre with support from V&A Museum, Arts Council England and Farnham Maltings.

JONNY AND THE BAPTISTS Tuesday 7 Apr, 8pm Tickets: £12/£11 Members | £10 Concessions

2013 Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and comedy’s fastest rising star Seann Walsh returns to the road this autumn with an all-new highly anticipated live show, to show the world that he is the Lie-In King.

Following their acclaimed, news-making STOP UKIP TOUR, the UK’s hottest musical comedians Jonny and the Baptists once again bring their blend of songs, satire and silliness to the nation.

Star of Channel 4’s Stand Up For The Week, BBC1’s Live At The Apollo and Michael McIntryre’s Comedy Roadshow, and Dave’s Argumental, Seann is a charming and charismatic natural born observational storyteller, and one of the most frighteningly precocious talents to emerge from the UK comedy circuit in years.

Taking on the big issues ahead of the May 2015 general election, ROCK THE VOTE is their most ambitious show yet. And with politicians now officially ranked below estate agents in the public’s trust, it's a desperate bid to find at least one good reason to vote. Stars of Radio 4’s The Now Show and The Infinite Monkey Cage, nominated for five national awards including the 2014 Leicester Comedy Festival Awards and British Comedy Awards. * See page 38 for more information

ANDREW LAWRENCE Friday 17 Apr, 8pm Tickets: £13/£11 Members | £10 Concessions Stand-up comedy’s foremost creepy-faced ginger man, star of BBC1’s ‘Live at the Apollo’ and a regular on Channel 4’s Stand-Up For The Week. Star of three series of his own acclaimed show on BBC Radio 4. Yet none of it has brought him any joy. Come and laugh in his stupid face at his disappointing life and some amusing thoughts he’s cobbled together about how awful the world is as he embarks on his fifth consecutive sell-out UK tour.

SHONALEIGH DIAMOND GIRL Friday 15 May, 7.30pm Tickets: £7/£6 Members

|

£5 Concessions

Shonaleigh returns to the Story Café with a tale that crosses cultures and speaks to us of the longings, failings and triumphs of the human spirit. Described as ‘a modern day Shaharazad’, Shonaleigh is a drut’syla, an oral storyteller in the Jewish tradition, with an extraordinary cache of hundreds of tales learned from her grandmother. She is one of the foremost storytellers on the British scene, appearing at venues around the country as well as travelling globally. Drawing on her Yiddish, English and European culture, she invites you into a world of image and myth with breathtaking vividness and with unexpected diversions along the way.

In My Dining Hell, Jay examines our love affair with lousy reviews, reads from accounts of some of the most excruciating nights out he’s ever had, looks at the worst reviews his own work has ever received, and invites the audience to give his performance a review in real time via Twitter. A hugely entertaining hour in the company of the man recently voted the best food and drink journalist in Britain. Jay Rayner is an award winning journalist, writer and broadcaster. He has been the Observer newspaper’s restaurant critic for over 12 years, is the resident food expert on The One Show, a regular judge on Masterchef and chair of BBC Radio 4’s Kitchen Cabinet. He has a lot of hair and a fine collection of flowery shirts.

DAVID SMITH

RICKY ROMAIN

Saturday 7 Mar – Saturday 11 Apr

Saturday 18 Apr – Saturday 30 May

Every single day since 7 March 2014, David Smith has created an artwork, sealed it in an envelope and sent it to the Arts Centre where they remained unopened. This unique installation is the culmination of a year-long collaboration with Bridport Arts Centre, when all the envelopes will be displayed but only sold pieces will be opened! People can invest in the project by buying a day – unseen – so you decide how the exhibition unfolds and takes form! The exhibition will open as the last #letter365 reaches the doors of the Art Centre. Follow the progress and find out how to buy the day that is significant to you via the blog; www.letter365.co.uk

New work using sgraffito (or scratching) techniques to scrape through layers of paint, ink and gesso. This method is a kind of excavation, a search for imagery that emerges by digging into the subconscious to discover representations of the faces of those who I imagine to be the ‘disappeared’, the ‘disempowered’. It is a process that could be described as ‘archaeological’ –in some way reflecting the action of relatives digging in the soil for the remains of loved ones who have been taken with no explanation.

#LETTER365 – THE INSTALLATION

Look out for additional events during the installation.

MARKING INJUSTICE – A PAINTER’S WAY OF COPING

‘As I pare away each canvas, I search for justice, and I wonder – at what point did we decide to settle for a world that has so much senseless greed and so little moral compassion in it? Also on display, an interactive visitors comments book. Leave your own creative ideas about the exhibition. Film & Talk: Join Ricky Romain & Film Maker Robert Golden Tuesday 5 May, 7pm, FREE, in the Theatre Carla Firstman Talk: Searching for Justice – Why Justice Matters for Human Rights Abuses and How Survivors have Persevered to Achieve It – Carla will chair a discussion between an invited panel, as well as, answering questions, and listening to comments, from members of the audience’ Saturday 16 May, 2pm, FREE

Nicole Burt is a Bridport based illustrator, artist, wall muralist and professional doodler. Inspired by people, relationships, the media and our surroundings.
