Written by Dylan Thomas Directed by Christopher Scott Designed by Mick Bearwish WEST COUNTRY TOUR 2017 “It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobblestreets silent and the hunched courters’-and-rabbits’ wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboat-bobbing sea... ” Set in the fictitious fishing village of Llareggub, this twenty four hour peek into the lives and loves of the likes of Captain Cat, Polly Garter and Willy Nilly has continued to enthral its audiences ever since. With its canvas of nonsense gossip, feuds, affairs, fights, frauds and practical jokes, the play pulses with the vitality and relish of real-life characters re-living their dreams and desires.

+ POST SHOW DISCUSSION

Saturday 10 Jun, 8pm

Tickets: £12/£10

Written & performed by Alison Skilbeck Directed by Lucy Skilbeck In October 1942, Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of the President, takes a dangerous trip to wartime London, to visit US troops, and see how the British women are coping. In her last days, as the Cuban Missile Crisis pushes the world to the brink of final catastrophe, Eleanor relives her journey, from bomb-damaged Buckingham Palace to midnight factories. She also recalls her life, from unhappy child, to unconventional wife, to becoming, in President Truman’s words ‘First Lady of the World’. Nominated for a Best Female Performance Offie Award for her performance, and granted special permission from the Roosevelt Estate to use Eleanor’s writings, Alison Skilbeck’s one-woman show explores the public and hidden life of one of the most extraordinary women of the 20th century.

LUKE WRIGHT THE TOLL

Friday 30 Jun, 8pm

KEN SPO RD WO

Tickets: £12/£10

After the Fringe First winning success of What I Learned From Johnny Bevan, Luke Wright is back with a stunning new spoken word show – The Toll.

Some days I pass for twenty-five I m ASOS, piss-ups, plans and rage, a scattergun of quips and puns when every drink s a stage But other days I feel my age, when all my cards have been declined when sins, like tin cans on a string, come rattling behind. Fresh from supporting John Cooper Clarke on tour, Wright is here to subject the English language to a series of degrading yet delightful tricks, all for your amusement. The poems in The Toll tour the flat-roofed pubs and half-bought couches of Brexit Britain. They struggle with doubt, duty and a score of half-cut nights spent shouting impotently at Question Time. Spend an evening with a raconteur at the top of his game, as he spits out visceral, inventive verse that sweats, bleeds and sings.

The Country Team is set in a South American country during the mid-1970s. For Henry Kissinger’s State Department the priority is to bolster military dictatorships across South America while actively pursuing commercial opportunities. Arlan Pederson Hoff, recently appointed as the United States Ambassador, confronts his senior career diplomats, the country team, for turning a blind eye to the killing machine unleashed beyond the fortified embassy. Deep conflicts within the embassy are brought into high relief with the appearance of a Manhattan marketing firm contracted to give the regime a make-over, and by a visiting American scholar intent on exploring the tense relations between followers of Liberation Theology and the Church. Unfolding events bring the country team face to face with the realities of a state-sponsored “dirty war”. Directed by Miles Bell and written by Andrew Rutherford, The Country Team completes a trilogy, following sell-out performances of Blindspot (2014) and Counting the Birches (2015).

Danny Ward

COMEDY CAFÉ Wednesday 6 Sep, 8pm Tickets: £8/£6

The hilariously funny Danny Ward combines high energy performance and wonderfully verbose language with tales of shopping at Lidl and eating at Harvester. Instantly likeable, Danny Ward avoids the smuttier side of comedy to focus on the minutiae of everyday life, a talent that saw him crowned the People’s Champion in the Amused Moose Laughter awards at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013.

MONMOUTH THE WEST COUNTRY REBELLION BY ANDREW RATTENBURY

Friday 15 Sep, 7.30pm Tickets: £12/£10

June 11th 1685. The Duke of Monmouth lands at Lyme Regis with 83 men to raise a Protestant army against James II, and begin what was to be England’s last rebellion against the Crown. South West actors tell this story of Dorset’s heritage in a new play by writer for stage and screen Andrew Rattenbury (The Golden Hour, Doc Martin), with live projection and original live music by composer James Reynolds.

JAZZ CAFÉ Friday 15 Sep, 8pm Tickets: £10

Back by popular demand, this will be a continuation of an engaging and witty look at the world of jazz: How many tunes does a jazz musician need to know? When does one soloist finish and the next one start? How much is written and how much improvised in jazz? How is a blues different to other jazz tunes? What is ‘improvisation’, an art or a science?

STIMELA THE MUSICAL Thursday 21 Sep, 8pm Tickets: £15/£13

It is a celebration of song and dance, an international phenomenon that has swept across the globe like a tidal wave of soaring voices and stomping feet. Gumboot dancing was born out of the oppressive gold mines of South Africa. Forbidden to speak and in almost complete darkness, the slave labourers developed their own language by slapping their gumboots and rattling their ankle chains. In time it has developed into a truly unique dance form... Unrivalled in its energy and physicality, it celebrates the body as a musical instrument whilst highlighting South Africa’s rich and complex culture.

DON’T FEAR THE REAPER Friday 29 Sep, 8pm

It’s been a morbid time for “the country’s leading musical satirist” (The Times); he’s turned 46 – over the hill by anyone’s standards – his personal life is in turmoil, and his childhood heroes are dropping like flies. At times like these, a man feels the Reaper creeping up on him… But is death anything to fear? And is it really the end? (Yes. Yes, it is, sorry!) Mitch confronts his – and YOUR – mortality with hilarious (and tuneful) consequences. Join him! It’s time you’re not getting back!

EDUARDO PAOLOZZI

GENERAL DYNAMIC F.U.N. A HAYWARD TOURING EXHIBITION

Saturday 24 Jun – Saturday 22 Jul Allsop Gallery We are very excited to have this new Hayward Touring Exhibition of screen prints by Eduardo Paolozzi coming to Bridport Arts Centre. Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924 – 2005) was one of the pioneers of the pop art movement in the UK. Born in Scotland, Paolozzi was a compulsive collector and a jumbler of icons. He is equally revered for his mechanistic sculptures and his kaleidoscopic print projects.

Paolozzi’s canny alchemy is vividly apparent in General Dynamic F.U.N, a series of 50 screen prints and photolithographs created between 1965 and 1970. The artist, who described himself as ‘a wizard in Toytown’, transformed the mundane, the derelict and the mass-produced into images that zap with electric eclecticism and impress with their graphic complexity. This exhibition is not to be missed!

TISH MURTHA

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT Saturday 9 Sep – Saturday 14 Oct Allsop Gallery This series of photographs shot by Tish Murtha over a few years starting in 1979, were first exhibited in 1981. They capture the hardship that both she and the North East of England suffered during the Thatcher era and the people in the images were her family, friends and local community. In the West End of Newcastle Tish saw the dereliction of young lives amid the dereliction of an area with more than double the unemployment rate of the city as a whole. She had first-hand experience of what it was like to be young and on the dole, and so she wanted to try to help others who saw no real future for themselves by highlighting the issue.

A newspaper review of Youth Unemployment including an interview with Tish regarding her subject matter was read aloud for debate in the House of Commons in 1981.

‘Looking back all these years later, what hits me above all else is that my mam had hope. She hoped by showing the reality of these kids’ lives, and the waste and squandering of their potential, that she could somehow bring about a change.’ Ella Murtha

Evelyn Bartlett

GREEN & PLEASANT LAND Tuesday 5 Sep – Saturday 14 Oct Café & Foyer Spaces

‘We are fortunate to live in a small, but extremely varied landscape; even more fortunate that nowhere is more than a few hours from the coast.’ As a painter, Evelyn Bartlett uses reference photographs and is always attracted to scenes of high contrast, especially nearsilhouette situations. The way she works, with no washes or blended colour, demands delineation and lots of decision-making as to what to leave out. Landscapes and seascapes with dramatic profiles and striking colours are therefore central to her artistic taste. This exhibition largely features Dorset and Devon, two counties that mean both ‘home’ and ‘holiday’ to the artist.
