Views from the Gods

Edith Cole worked a dead-end job in a funeral parlour. Ralph Conti worked wealthy widows for a quick buck. Neither expected to fall in love. But once they did, they just kept on falling. Inspired by the true story of the ‘Lonely Hearts Killers’, a pair of latter-day Macbeths who gripped the imagination of 1950s America, ‘Hummingbird’ is dark, compelling physical theatre. Hummingbird uses a lush soundscape of songs, jingles, adverts and other Americana to conjure up the post-war era. Turning Estonian folk music on its head... Winner of Estonian Ethno Music Awards 2015 - Best band, best album, best song. Trad.Attack! have turned Estonian folk music on its head since releasing their 2014 debut album AH! Combining the bagpipe playing and vocals of

Sandra Vabarna, virtuoso guitar of Jalmar Vabarna and inventive percussion of Tõnu Tubli, the trio take their inspiration from old archive recordings of Estonian traditional songs. But folk music is merely their starting point, not their boundary. The trio’s second album Shimmer Gold was released in May 2017, and has been electrifying audiences at this year’s round of summer festivals.

A family show for Christmas inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s traditional fairy tale. “Her little hands were almost numbed with cold. Oh! a match might afford her a world of comfort, if she only dared take a single one out of the bundle, draw it against the wall, and warm her fingers by it…” London. The last evening of the year. The snow is falling. A little girl struggles fiercely through the dark streets. In a vain attempt to stay warm she strikes a match, then a second and third. In the fatal cold the flames blaze to life and the friendly flickering fire guides her to fantastic Christmas visions. With each strike we are transported into her hopes and dreams. The Last Baguette was formed in Paris by graduates of the Philippe Gaulier and Jacques Lecoq schools. The theatre they make is entertaining, accessible and eccentric. The visual storytelling and live music in this magical show, shines a light on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic winter tale. * See page 2 for more information

Saturday 27 Jan, 5.55pm Tickets: £17.50/£14.50

Tosca is one of the great evenings of opera, and from its strident opening chords conjures up a world of political instability and menace. Jonathan Kent’s production for The Royal Opera captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800. The Chief of Police, Scarpia – one of the most malevolent villains in opera – ruthlessly pursues and tortures enemies of the state. His dark, demonic music contrasts with the expansive melodies of the idealistic lovers, Tosca and Cavaradossi, who express their passion in sublime arias, including ‘Vissi d’arte’ and ‘E lucevan le stelle’. Giacomo Puccini’s dramatic work was a hit with audiences on its 1900 premiere and it remains one of the most performed of all operas – with its gripping plot and glorious music, it’s easy to see why.
