Brier Hill Gallery Fine Prints, Photographs, and Illustrated Books

151 Corey Street West Roxbury, MA 02132-2339

This is the first in a series of catalogs that will highlight selected items from our inventory of fine prints, illustrated books, and photographs. The items are deliberately not arranged in any logical order, in the hope that by browsing its entire contents you will become better acquatined with the scope of our offerings, and be tempted to browse our full on-line inventory at www.brierhillgallery.com. Subsequent catalogs will be organized in a more logical and thematically consistent way. New additions to our inventory are regularly added to the Brier Hill web site, but we also post them to our Brier Hill Gallery Facebook page, where it will be easier to find them. You have received this catalog because we have exchanged e-mail in the past. Unless you prefer to opt out, you will continue to receive these catalogs as they are published. If you prefer not to receive any further catalogs, please let us know and we’ll remove your address from our mailing list. To protect your privacy, our mailing list is never shared with others. We would greatly appreciate it if you would forward this catalog to like-minded friends and colleagues; we will add them to the mailing list at their request. Your comments and inquiries are always welcome.

Printed by Peter Platt (1859 - 1934), one of the leading fine arts printers of the era. Signed and dated in the plate; inscribed in the plate “Frankie and Johnnie from “HIM”; and signed in pencil by John Sloan in the lower margin. A superb impression of this most unusual image. HIM is the title of a surrealist play by e.e. cummings, written in 1926 and staged in Greenwich Village by the Provincetown Players, where John Sloan undoubtedly saw it and was thus inspired to produce this depiction of Act II, scene 5 from the play in which actor Hemsley Williams and actress Goldye Steiner, who plays Frankie and carries a doll named Johnie (sic), are circled by eight silent characters wearing hoods while an invisible backstage chorus sings a version of the classic popular song “Frankie and Johnny”. This etching is from the collection of Joel and John Weinstock of New Orleans. A graduate of Smith College, Joel Wise began her lifetime of art collecting in Paris when, instead of buying lingeré with the money given to her by her mother, she purchased a print by Georges Roualt. After her marriage to John Weinstock, the couple established Prints International, based in their Carrollton home, and helped establish many significant collections in New Orleans and beyond. The Weinstocks were also generous supporters of The New Orleans Museum of Art. Archival mat, mount, and backer in a period solid brass frame.

$2,900 While we’re on the subject, The Saga of Frankie and Johnny, written and illustrated with bold, primitive woodcuts by John Held, Jr., published in 1930 by Walter V. McKee, New York and reissued by Clarkson N. Potter in 1972 is well worth a look.
