WELCOME

from the team Hello and welcome to the first edition of the MyKindaFuture E-magazine in 2016! We are back, feeling refreshed after the Christmas break to bring you our monthly magazine packed with employability tips with a special focus on careers in Law. But fret not, this is not just for law students! We are profiling fantastic opportunities, such as the Clifford Chance Competition (Page 12 & 13) which encourages students from all disciplines to take part. January is often referred to as a fresh start, however for many university students it can feel the opposite! You are now in the middle of the academic year, preparing for exams and finishing big academic projects and on top of this you might be thinking about a job for the upcoming summer, whether you are graduating, taking a placement year or looking for an internship. If this wasn’t enough, January can be a bleak month after the excitement of the festive period. It’s not a surprise that

many students end up feeling overwhelmed, stressed or anxious and suffering from the January blues. If you are having these feelings, then remember this is totally normal and there are some simple steps you can take to ensure you are feeling your best to tackle 2016!

1. Take breaks from working If you are revising, job hunting or writing reports it’s important to break your time up and give your brain and eyes a rest. Go for a walk, listen to some music or watch funny videos for 10 – 30 minutes and have a giggle!

2. Don’t set crazy targets for yourself Whether it’s a new year’s resolution or aims for revision, be realistic and plan your time carefully. Take some time to think about the things you need to achieve and by when and create a realistic plan for how you can achieve the most important things.

3. Talk to someone When you are not thinking clearly, it can be very helpful to talk about what you are going through with a friend, family member or lecturers. Even if you don’t want to open up about your feelings, it can be a refreshing break to take your mind away from your work. You can also seek free support from your universities counselling service who will be there to help you no matter how small your problem might be. Take advantage of these support systems which are often underused! Good luck to all of our readers in your January exams and check out page 11 to find out how to make the most out of the start of the New Year!

Introduction to a Career in Law Whether you have studied Law at university or another degree discipline and you have little or no idea about what a career in Law would look like, this edition of our HirEd magazine is definitely for you. Many of the skills you have learned during your academic career are transferable and there are many opportunities for you to utilise these skills in many different employment areas. A career in Law offers many varied opportunities - often dependent on the route you choose to take and your area of interest or speciality. Legal roles can be found across all sectors and areas of business although there are three common pathways that those who wish to pursue a career in Law will follow.

The three most common routes for those pursuing a career in Law are: 1. Barristers 2. Solicitors 3. Academics Those who aspire to secure a career in Law often choose to specialise in a particular area – from corporate lawyers negotiating multi-million pound mergers, to employment lawyers handling work-related disputes or media lawyers dealing with rights, sponsorship deals and libels. Although you may find yourself specialising in a particular area to begin with, this will not restrict you for the rest of your career… in many ways it will open up further opportunities. Where you choose to work will also provide you with further options and areas for development.

You could choose to work in-house for an organisation or business, or you may prefer working in private legal practice – either in a global law firm or in a high street solicitors! There are also many government opportunities in various departments the possibility of working for the Crown Prosecution Service. The opportunities are endless for both students who have studied Law and those who have studied an alternative degree. A career in Law requires hard work, determination, efficiency and commercial awareness. To succeed – as with any job – you need to adopt a strategic, logical and analytical approach combined with excellent verbal and communication skills. As with most industries, and perhaps slightly more with careers in Law: competition is fierce and standards are extremely high but the results are immensely rewarding! Do not be fooled by the misconception that all students who study law become solicitors or

barristers… There are many other options and a larger proportion of law graduates go on to pursue different roles! In addition to all of the great tips and hints within this magazine - from the perspectives of both employers and students - your university careers service will be able to provide additional support. Most careers services will offer free CV checking services, mock interviews for all roles including solicitor jobs and the opportunity to meet face to face with advisors who specialise in careers in Law. Check out your own careers service website for details of how to access their services. You will also be able to find information about employer presentations and careers fairs taking place on your campus.

Shivani Jobanputra Wholesale Credit & Market Risk (Queen Mary University of London, Law)

After university I knew that whilst a legal profession was no longer where my aspirations were, I wanted a job which would allow me to utilise the analytical and communication skills I had learnt throughout my law degree. It is often a misconception that all jobs within a bank require strong mathematical skills. This is not the case, there are many roles within a bank, ranging from marketing to risk roles in which mathematical skills are not an essential or pre-requisite. Many of my rotational placements have however required strong interpersonal, attention to detail and problem solving skills. These are all skills which are inherent to anyone who has studied a law degree! I was attracted to the HSBC graduate programme as it has allowed me to explore different areas and locations of the bank in order to understand where my interests lie. This has seen me working within roles such as risk, project management and front line roles (i.e. working directly with external customers). I have also been fortunate

6

enough to take advantage of HSBC’s global presence and work internationally in New York for one of my rotational placements. HSBC’s graduate programme has exceeded all my expectations. Beyond my day to day job role, the graduate scheme provides so much more. From studying for professional qualifications, participating in charity events and training and development opportunities, one of the greatest things has been the level of support provided throughout the programme from senior management to my peers and I. I would highly recommend the HSBC graduate programme to anyone who has studied a law degree. The scheme allows you to implement your skills learnt from your degree, whilst taking advantage of the many opportunities that HSBC provides.

Welcome to Accenture

Blog Post by Josy-Baroness Boakye Hello, I’m Josy-Baroness and I’m an Analyst at Accenture. I studied Law at the University of Nottingham and before joining the Strategy & Consulting programme, I did an internship at Accenture in the Marketing department. Starting was quite scary and although you kind of know what to expect, we all know reality can be a very different thing! So it was a relief to spend my first 3 weeks training; one week in London, and two weeks in Bangalore. In London, I met the people in my ‘start group’; your start group being the people who join at the same time as you. In Bangalore I trained alongside Analysts from Accenture offices all over the world. It’s a great way to start and meeting so many people means you already have a network to fall back on whenever you need an extra hand. Plus my start group just so happened to be amazing, so that helps! Training in London was focused on orientation and core skills, whilst training in Bangalore was tailored to my role as a Technology Analyst. I learnt about the way we work as a firm, what I can expect to be doing day-to-day, project lifecycles and much more. My favourite part was working with amazing people from all over the world. A great reminder of how truly global Accenture is. I also recently finished Digital training – training specifically for Analysts in Accenture Digital. That was a brilliant experience as we got an in depth look into what Accenture is doing in the Digital space – in particular Analytics, Mobility and Interactive; as well as discussing how and where digital is going in the next few years. If you want to know more about Accenture Digital, here’s a good place to start. Till next time

Legal roles within Santander

Traditional jobs in the banking industry may evoke ideas around a Cashier or Teller within a Branch setting. Although this continues to be an integral part of the Bank, we now have a number of different ways to carry out our banking transactions in particular due to technological innovations. As the banking structure continues to grow and develop so do the areas of opportunity.

Legal roles within Santander fit within various business areas. Audit, Risk and Governance & Control provide additional assurance in an ever-changing regulatory environment that the bank is running in an effective manner. In addition to these functions, we have other business support functions, such as Legal and Secretariat which makes sure Santander’s UK businesses comply with company legislation and regulation. They provide legal advisory services to the business, and manage subsidiary companies and their statutory requirements. These can include roles such as ‘Regulatory and Compliance Managers’ or ‘Senior Security Specialists’ where experience in Law or similar subjects are usually expected. In Early in Careers, starting your career within Internal Audit or Risk allows you to build a foundation of knowledge taking into consideration aspects around

control and governance which helps to ensure the bank runs in the way that it should according to rules, regulations and the law. Joining an Internship with Santander allows you 10 weeks over the summer to understand how different business areas work together and establishes skills and knowledge through working closely with staff members who will support you to get a real experience of working life. If you are successful after your evaluation at the end of the Internship, a place on the Graduate scheme is offered without any further assessment to undertake, which allows you time to concentrate solely on your studies in your final year! If you are interested in applying for our Internship programmes or any other opportunities within Early in Career, please visit our website: www.santanderearlyincareer.co.uk

Life as a Law Student It can sometimes be difficult to imagine what life is really like for other students whether they are studying the same degree as you or a completely different subject all together. There are often preconceived ideas of what it is like studying particular subjects and for students studying Law this is no exception! This article will hopefully expose a few of the myths associated with students studying Law, confirm a couple of the conspiracies and make sure you know what it is really like for Law students! We have recently spoken with a number of our Bright Futures society members who are studying Law and we asked them to tell us three things: what the most exciting element of studying law is, what the most challenging part of their degree is and what are the biggest misconceptions of studying Law!

The most exciting elements of studying Law Law is a highly intellectual subject that, although it has its challenges, truly expands your way of thinking. Law is a hugely diverse subject area that touches every sphere of our lives from sports to technology to food, politics and healthcare! Law, as a degree, provides you with the opportunity to learn about many other things including social and economic

10

history, business and politics – things you would not necessarily expect to learn as part of this course! As well as the opportunity to learn about these different areas within the degree, perhaps one of the most exciting elements of studying Law is the broad range of people you will meet on your course. Studying Law allows you to interact with some interesting characters and these people will help you enjoy (and get through) university with some help – whether they are the ‘party animals’ in a social context or the ‘academic ones’ who can help you understand the difficult concepts!

The most challenging parts of studying Law Without a doubt, the most challenging part of studying Law is keeping up with the highly demanding levels of coursework – in particular the amount of reading you are expected to do! Reading lists are huge and can often seem impossible! You need to be smart about what you read and what you don’t. This is applicable to the many case studies you will be expected to read as part of your degree too. It would not be possible to read all of the cases thoroughly so you need to learn quickly how to skim and deduct the vital information required! The technical language associated with this degree is also an extremely difficult element of the course. Law is truly a study of words and their legal definitions! Studying law also keeps you on your toes – no two days are the same! Time management however is of vital importance… your calendar on your phone or you diary will become your best

friend! As a law student, you are studying one of the most time consuming degrees and so scheduling everything in your life from watching a movie to eating dinner will become paramount to your sanity!

The biggest misconceptions of studying Law Perhaps the greatest misconception of studying law is that you will not get a job at the end of your degree… this is not true! You will get a job. You will find a role in whatever area you choose to whether that is in private legal profession or in an organisation! Be organised, do your research and you will know exactly what roles are available to you and how much you can expect to be paid! Another common misconception is that everyone flies through the course without any difficulty… this couldn’t be further from the truth! Those who appear to understand the course more fully are often those who have put the time and effort into really trying to understand them. Talking to others on your course will often reassure you that everyone is going through the same stresses as you… and it is good to communicate and vent this! If you express any difficulties you are having amongst your peer group, you never know who might just be able to help you! A final piece of more general advice is that your whole life at university will be taken up by your degree so make sure you don’t just surround yourself with Law students – you will soon discover for yourself why this could be a problem. Try to expand your friendship group beyond those students on your course and include others from different degree backgrounds! This can only be a good excuse for a social, no?

STEPPING INTO 2016 AS A SUPER STUDENT Being at home during the Winter break is a luxury for all students… You are able to lounge around your house, watch movies, enjoy the delight of being spoiled by your parents and relish the cupboards filled with food… It’s just like being a child again at Christmas! So much so that it’s very easy to forget the harsh reality of what is looming when you go back to your student life in January… exams, coursework and many sleepless nights! This short guide contains our top five tips on how to step into 2016 as a super student ready for the year ahead!

1. Don’t dwell on the past… start afresh! It can be very easy to dwell on your first semester during the Christmas break and many students beat themselves up and say they could have done more or spent a little bit of extra time on that essay however, nothing can be changed! Don’t beat yourself up about anything that’s happened before… it is a new year and this is the best time to make positive changes! It is useful to look back and assess how things went previously but rather than getting worked up and upset, use this as a opportunity to evaluate your performance and think about what you can do now to achieve better grades from this point forward!

2. Plan, plan, plan! One of the best ways to kick of the New Year is to create a plan… a plan of action for the year ahead! You are now halfway through the academic year so you are well aware of what is expected of you in the months to come and by planning ahead it will make your life easier in ensuring you are on track over the coming weeks! It is much easier to let deadlines slip your mind if you do not have a plan in place. The first thing to do is buy a diary and start filling in your coursework deadlines and exam dates.

3. Set yourself achievable goals! Once you have bought your new diary and filled in all your deadlines and exams, it is time to set achievable goals of when you want to complete your coursework in advance to allow time to proof read your work and make changes before any deadlines. This will help you to ensure that you are not rushing at the last minute. You will also be able to make detailed study plans by setting goals of when you hope to have revised a particular topic or area of study! Don’t be too adventurous though and make your goals unachievable… this can often demotivate students and can have negative repercussions!

4. Reward yourself... Work hard, play hard! It is always important to remember to reward yourself when you have met your goals and aspirations. Studies have shown that working constantly without breaks and time to relax is not good for you and therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy balance between work and fun! Perhaps rewarding yourself with a movie night or a few drinks after completing each chapter of your dissertation may help rto you keep on track.

5. Try to remain focused! It is very easy to create plans and study timetables but it is more difficult to remain focused on achieving all that is contained within them. It is every students dream to graduate with the best grade possible and to secure a job as quickly after completing their studies as possible. The more focused you are on your studies and even on your job hunt, the easier it will be to turn these dreams into a reality! ‘New year, new me’ is a common phrase at this time of year but these tips should hopefully help you turn things around and will help you conquer those January blues that are all so familiar!

Santander

Thinking about what comes after University life? Take the next step with Santander Early in Careers!

COMPANY PROFILE

It’s the time of year when most students start thinking about their next steps, whether that be another year of study, coming face to face with the world of work or embarking on an Intern/Graduate scheme. In the Early in Career team, we’re planning for a successful campaign to bring on board individuals to join our Santander family and build a successful long-term career with us. Currently we have both Graduate and Intern opportunities ranging across a number of business areas for those individuals who want to continue developing the skills they have learned during their studies and also be challenged through contributing to projects, such as around building new digital platforms, and creating new relationships. Our Internship opportunities provide a really great snap shot into what it is like to work for Santander and dependent upon performance, also offers the chance to be given a place on the Graduate programme without having to go through the assessment process again. Not only does this relieve any pressure to complete interviews in the final year of your university life, it allows you to focus all of your efforts on obtaining the best results in your degree.

Our Internships last for 10 weeks over the summer and the feedback we have had from the latest Interns is that they were surprised as to how much they were able to learn about Santander in the time that they had in the business, how much responsibility they were given on projects and how many people they were able to meet and network with. The Internship has opened up many doors for the students helping them to understand what the world of work is all about but also giving them a flavour of what else was to come if they moved onto the Graduate programme and we’ve seen the highest numbers of Interns move onto our Graduate programmes this year, for this very reason. Should you choose to stay onto a Graduate programme with us, you will have a number of developmental opportunities as well as advice and guidance throughout the programmes from knowledgeable colleagues who know what you’re going through. You will have the chance to take part in our CSR project, supporting our charity of the year, which is a great opportunity to build a network of fellow graduates that will influence the rest of your career. By the time you’ve finished your programme, you’ll have earned an

industry-recognised qualification in your area – such as a CIOBS, Professional Banker Diploma, ACCA or CIMA. We have a number of opportunities available in different business areas as below:

• Risk • Internal Audit • Corporate & Commercial Banking and Global Corporate Banking • Marketing • UK Banking • Technology & Operations (Graduate and Intern) • Geoban (Graduate)

We are now excited to meet the future Interns and Graduates at our Assessment Centres and soon to be new members of the Santander family. As we base our decisions on how long the opportunities stay on the website on the number of applications we receive, we have already closed a number of Graduate Programmes – so don’t leave it too late to visit the website and make your application!

Chanel’s Story

Chanel says she’s found the support on offer to be excellent.

she does, doesn’t always match up with the reality.

“When I first started I was given lots of responsibility, but I was always supported by managers, my mentor and my team. The best advice I was given was ‘rule number one; ask questions.’ I’ve never felt lost in my role. I’ve used other graduates as a sounding board and because I’ve worked closely with them, I’ve built some great relationships.”

“Whenever I tell people I’m an accountant, the ruder ones audibly groan,” she explains. “The more polite ones try and make conversation, expecting boring tales of corrupted Excel files and broken calculators. Once I tell them about my experiences at KPMG, like how I’ve been bonding with paint-splattered partners at our department’s Corporate Responsibility event painting classrooms at a school for autistic children, suddenly, being an accountant doesn’t seem all too bad. Especially an accountant at KPMG.”

Even though Chanel was confident that KPMG was the ideal place for her, she was still a little apprehensive on her first day.

“I’ve successfully navigated my way through nine exams – soon to be 12, hopefully! I’ve had opportunities that have challenged me and I’ve been consistently encouraged to achieve new things, and to take on more responsibility.”

“I felt a bit out of my depth – as though I was a soon-to-be-discovered fraud amongst the other 10 or so new starters. But I quickly realised that it was just nerves because everyone was having first day jitters. We were all quickly put at ease during the induction.”

It’s thanks to the support she’s had from her peers and her more experienced colleagues that Chanel’s confidence has grown and grown.

On a day-to-day level, Chanel assesses whether the financial statements of different companies are a true and fair reflection of their transactions and works with her clients to build strong relationships. She loves the variety of her role, but has found that other people’s perception of what

COMPANY PROFILE

“When I was at university, KPMG was always my favourite of the Big Four firms,” she says. “I was confident that I’d thrive in the environment and felt well informed, as I’d spoken to lots of KPMG employees at different networking events. I liked the idea that I’d be able to add value to all sorts of different organisations, and especially the fact that I’d be working on real projects for real clients right from the start. I definitely made the right choice – I had high expectations and they’ve actually been exceeded. I’m making a difference to tech telecoms and media companies – whether they’re small firms or huge multinationals.”

KPMG

Even before Chanel had finished studying Economics with Central and East European Studies at Birmingham University, she felt sure that she wanted to embark on a career at KPMG...

Chanel’s found that the social side to life at KPMG is just as important as the thought-leading work she’s involved in. “In February, I was part of a team working in Dallas, Texas, for two weeks. As well as carrying out Audit work for our clients, we ate lots of delicious steak, watched the Super Bowl in a Texan bar, and went to a rodeo! We quickly became a close-knit team. We received a lot of support from KPMG managers in the UK too – it was an amazing experience.”
