editors letter What a year! Every year so much seems to happen and be achieved by The Bright Futures Societies and this year has been one big & busy year! I think it is only right that I start by expressing the National Teams’ thanks to all of our fantastic Societies. The effort and time that you dedicate to running the Societies is greatly appreciated and it has been great for us to be able to see the individual progress and personal development that has been made by each of you. Thank you! We would also like to thank all of our fantastic Corporate Investors who dedicate their time, expertise and money to work collaboratively with us to help the students take responsibility for their own employability and engage with the amazing pool of talent that is our membership. Oscar moment over….!! There have been a number of changes and challenges in the graduate world during 201415, seeing some organisations doing away with UCAS points as part of their recruitment process, an increase in video interviewing in the selection process and an ever still low number of females students studying STEM related subjects. The National Society team and Graduate Recruitment team have and will continue to offer advice and guidance on these areas and more, to our members and Corporate Investors over the next academic year.
The most significant change for us as an organisation is the news of our merger with MyKindaCrowd. We now have even more great people within our organisation and more support and expertise to tap in to. The Bright Futures National team has always been a small team with big dreams and as a result of our merger we are now able to start to make those dreams a reality. There are some exciting times ahead for our Societies and we look forward to unveiling these at our first Committee Conference in September. Watch this space…… Have a great summer! Claire Libby: Head of Society
P.S. And check out our blog for loads of great articles and tips on how to make yourself more employable.

A great way to find out more about the industry in a fun creative way
Trainees taking part in one of the media workshops in Bournemouth
6
This year Channel 4 has teamed up with MyKindaCrowd/Bright Futures to produce a series of regional skills workshops that goes that little bit further. So far, the scheme has connected with and inspired over 3,000 young people up and down the country. The aim: to reach out to more diverse communities and young people who wouldn’t normally gain access to such opportunities. On Saturday 9 May, Bournemouth University played host to the inaugural C4 Pop Up, an outreach programme of skills workshops and challenges for young people aged 16-25. Around 150 young people joined the MKC tutors and Channel 4 staff, freelancers and indie specialists to gain a unique insight into the industry. Iain MacRury (Deputy Dean Research and Professional Practice, Faculty of Media and Communication at Bournemouth University) welcomed everyone and guest speaker Jonathan Clark (Director of media company Bright Blue Day) demonstrated that it’s not necessarily educational attainment that leads to opportunities in this industry but it’s the importance of ambition and perseverance alongside talent. From there, the troops split into three mediafocussed workshops – TV production, marketing and digital – where they divided into smaller teams to undertake a challenge inspired by the Rio Paralympic Games 2016. The trainees then took part in a series of workshops which gave them the opportunity to explore how brands are positioned across
traditional broadcasting and the new media digital space. Key questions which were raised are, ‘is the digital revolution already over and have we fully embraced the arrival of the digital kingdom?’ The final session provided the perfect mix and conclusion to the day and ensured the electric atmosphere continued to charge. Channel 4’s industry experts Natalya and Gabrielle offered two entertaining and insightful presentations about gaining access to the industry and to conclude the teams presented their work to a panel of expert judges. The three winning teams are now invited to a Channel 4 Experience Day where they’ll get creative and career coaching from the Channel 4 team. A student who took part in the workshop said, ‘“It was a great way to find out more about the industry in a fun creative way, using workshops to help us progress”. Needless to say, the quality of creative output was extremely high and set the standard for all teams to meet in future rounds. Travelling north from the vibrant coastal town, C4 Pop Up will visit London, Norwich, Wolverhampton and Preston; before returning to the capital for the end-of-year grand finale event back at Channel 4’s headquarters. Another student who took part in Channel 4 Pop Up in Bournemouth said “I have never done anything like this before so didn’t know what to expect. I loved the film making task - it was great to try something new. I am even more determined to gain my career in the media. Thank you very much.”

Career Visioning advice from Vicki Spandler Early Careers Programme Manager (Product) Tesco Early Careers Team
When I was asked to write this article, I wasn’t sure what words of wisdom I could give you. It feels like so long ago now that I was at university, although in reality it wasn’t that long ago at all. Whether you’re in your first year and coming to the end of what was probably an amazing introduction to university life, or in your second or third years with the promise of course work or literature reviews to complete over the coming weeks, you’re probably looking forward to the wind down that your vacation brings.
8
I remember those months, and as a selfconfessed Kenny Keeno I spent most of my hours getting the work experience I needed to get onto a Human Resources Graduate Programme; a feat I luckily achieved and has set me up for my life today. But now that I’m this version of me, the version of me who can’t go out on a week night through fear of my 9 0’clock meeting, I’ve realised something… These months that you’re looking forward to and I let run away from me, they give you time. How you choose to spend this time is up to you. You could work, you could play, you could travel… the world is your oyster. The purpose of this small piece, is to consider spending some of this time on a specific something… something we get our graduates in Tesco to do and something that if done properly will help you throughout the rest of your careers, regardless of where they take you – Career Visioning. Career Visioning will help you to identify a future that will inspire you, regardless of where you are now and how far away that vision is. It will help you decide how you want to spend your summers, what roles
you might apply to, and equally for those already with roles to go to, what you’re aiming for in the longer term. By putting your vision into words, or saying it out loud, you ensure that you have your north star, and think about the path through which you will eventually achieve where you want to be. Imagine yourself in the future at a point in which you have achieved great career success - what does your life look like? What’s the one activity you most love? Is it part of the career you’re building for yourself? If not, how can you make it part of your career? Visioning throughout my career has helped guide me so much since being at Tesco. Every opportunity, every career conversation, I’ve kept in mind my vision for myself and used that to help me make my decisions. My career vision is to become a leader within the People function of the business that I work for, to ensure I make other’s experiences at work better, and to one day couple this with being the best mum and wife I can be.
What’s yours?

Things employers look for other than your degree… A lot of the time, it is falsely emphasised that the main thing graduates can offer to an employer is their degree. This isn’t entirely true – there are a number of ‘soft skills’ that are considered equally, if not more, important to securing a good impression on an employer. We asked some of our corporate investors what they look for in the candidates who apply to their Graduate Programmes and Internships, minus the degree…
• Initiative. Meaningful and personal research into the company – not regurgitation from the company website. • Listening skills. How well you absorb information and respond to it, sometimes including negative feedback. • Self-awareness. What impact your actions have on your work and your team, and how realistically your ideas match reality. Alternatively, consideration for the rest of the team is also vital.
10
• True excitement. Believable passion for the company with a genuine interest in working for it. • Confidence. Full awareness of what you have applied for, and why you are suited to the role. • Strong commerciality. An active ability and desire to contribute to the company’s success. • Maturity. This includes a level of employability and previous experience of getting involved with extra-curricular activities, as well as having the emotional intelligence to deal with tasks appropriately.
• Relevant experience. Whether you have completed an internship, a part-time job, or simply an extra-curricular opportunity in a related area, this shows genuine interest in the field. • Knowledge of company values. The company’s established values are often incorporated into recruitment questions, to make a comparison against the candidate and their suitability.
• Colleague importance. Recognition of the importance of the whole team’s progress and achievements, ahead of your own, appreciating others’ ideas and opinons. • Applicable experience. Ability to use effective engineering skills, as well as secure valuable previous experience. • Analytical approach. Use intuition and be open to new ideas, whilst being able to coach and mentor other colleagues. • Planning and problem solving. Can take on an issue and deal with it diversely and professionally.
• Resilience. The maturity to overcome difficult situations regularly.
• Whole leadership. Developing your personal approach to work, leading others in the same way and upholding professional standards.
• Self-awareness. Paired with a high level of commercial understanding.
• Business acumen. Keeping updated with industry trends, considering a broad span of data when making decisions and seeking new opportunities.
• Knowledge of the company. Personal research into the company, rather than regurgitating facts.
• Technical capability. Building and maintaining technical expertise, delivering insights with others.
• Career motivation. A direction in where you would like to be and what you would like to be doing. • Communicate information clearly and succinctly.
• Consider the ‘big picture’. Always anticipate the long term. • Commercial awareness. Including generally and specifically to the sector of work involved. • Motivation. High levels of determination and drive. • Good communication. This includes both verbally and written correspondence. • Effective relationships. Building trust and respect between colleagues and enabling change.
• Global acumen. Embracing change, considering new opportunities and bringing new insights. • Relationships. Confident communication, maintaining strong and authentic relationships within your business network.
• Customer focus. The customer is the main point of interest – work and ambition should surround this. • Results. A drive for excellence and focus, with a vision for the results that are needed. • Leadership. The ability to take on full responsibility for a task or a team when needed, and to execute the targets effectively.

Managing & maintaining your Committee over the Summer
You probably have countless awesome things planned for your holidays – and quite rightly. But, whilst you’re raving at festivals, catching some rays on a beach or gaining some valuable work experience,
12
don’t forget about your committee this summer! We want our Societies to be even bigger and better next year, but a good Society is only ever possible with a great committee. Strong teamwork, good
communication and a sense of mutual respect between your members is vital. So, by allocating a small percentage of your summer to each other, your Society can achieve its full potential starting from September.
Here are a few tips for keeping your committee strong throughout the summer, and getting next year off to an amazing start… • Know when everyone’s around. Get everyone together before you leave for the summer and note down when each of the committee will be unavailable over the holidays. This will help you plan meetings and committee catch-ups. • Have each other’s contact details. This sounds very obvious, but keeping in touch over the holidays will be much easier if you have everyone’s mobile numbers and personal email addresses. You can also start a group conversation on Facebook to keep a central ‘chatting point’. • Devise a strategy for the holidays. The President should delegate tasks such as administration and event planning to each committee member, so everyone has something to work on over the holidays. Preparation for September and Fresher’s week is key.
• Recap on last year’s progress. Revise all achievements and ‘hiccups’ from last year’s team and use it as a guide and a target for next year’s successes. • Plan ahead. Discuss with your committee what you think you are capable of achieving next year, and what you would like to achieve – and do both! Brainstorm ideas for your target membership, number of events, BF corporate investors you would like to work with and maybe even National Awards nominations. • Ensure everyone is involved. Try and get as all members to attend committee meetings over the holidays, and especially involve everyone in communication. Each member is important and valued.
• Get to know each other. Organise a get-together for all of your committee members with a BBQ or a pub night and have a laugh. You will naturally work much closer as a team if you consider each other as friends as well as colleagues.
Of course, the National Team will be here over the whole of the summer holiday period, and so will help you with anything you are struggling with and offer support at all times. Committee skype calls can be arranged at any point for some more guidance. Don’t be afraid to hold back next year!
• Secure dates for team meetings. As well as having fun, make sure you all secure a couple of dates to catch up with each other on strategy progress and any new ideas that come forward.

Salted Caramel Ice Cream Ingredients • 3 1/2 cups 2% reduced-fat milk • 3 large egg yolks • 1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar • 1/4 cup heavy cream • 1 tablespoon butter • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt • 1/2 teaspoon flake salt
Method 1) Place milk in a medium-sized saucepan over a medium-high heat. Heat to 180° or until tiny bubbles form around edge of pan (but do not boil). 2) Place egg yolks in a large bowl; stir with a whisk. 3) Gradually add half of the hot milk to the whisked yolks, stirring constantly. Pour the egg and milk mixture back into the saucepan and put to one side. 4) Combine sugar, cream, and butter in another large saucepan over a medium heat. Bring this to a boil, stirring until sugar melts. Then, cook the mixture for 3 minutes without stirring. 5) Remove from heat and stir in the sea salt. This has formed your caramel mixture. 6) Gradually add this caramel mixture to the separate yolk and milk mixture, stirring constantly. 7) Put the combined mixture over a low heat and continue to cook until a thermometer registers 160°. 8) Place pan in a large ice-filled bowl until completely cooled, stirring occasionally. 9) Pour mixture into the freezer can of an ice-cream freezer; freeze according to manufacturer’s instructions. Alternatively, place in a container in your normal freezer. 10) Drain ice water from freezer bucket; repack with salt and ice. 11) Cover with kitchen towels, and let stand 1 hour or until firm. 12) Serve with sprinkled sea salt on top, and add a chocolate or wafer decoration.

As part of the Arqiva Graduate Scheme 2014 I applied for the position of IP Engineer, a role I found highly interesting as it allowed me to build on my background in computer networking within a unique and exciting industry. Like many graduate schemes I completed an online application, telephone interview and assessment centre. While nerveracking, we were all made to feel at ease throughout the entire process. It obviously worked, because a week after the assessment centre I received a call offering me the position!
The next few months flew by as I moved away from home for the first time and looked forward to my first day! Since then I have spent my time within the Network Design Team where my main responsibility is to design the path a service will take to arrive at its destination. What does this mean exactly? It means a broadcaster; ITV or the BBC for example, will have a channel they want to deliver from their studios to locations around the country. It is then up to me to decide how it gets there, it sounds simple but it’s amazing how many factors have to be considered before it can go live.
