KIEREN PHELPS ILLUSTRATOR
I gradually established myself as a freelance illustrator after I left Kingston in 1982. I mostly worked for magazines, and far less frequently a newspaper or book. Being commissioned by The Radio Times was always the most exciting as it had published all my Illustration heroes over the previous 40 years. I worked as a freelance Illustrator for 20 years. I started the Ba Illustration course at The University of Gloucestershire in 2005 and established its imprint The Pittville Press and its student publications. I began the Cheltenham Illustration Awards in 2006 publishing and printing the annual, touring the exhibition alongside an Illustrators symposium. The Awards continues to flourish and grow as a free and inclusive international celebration of narrative illustration. The undergraduate course emphasizes, storytelling and drawing two elements I consider essential to illustration. The MA Illustration I started in…. emphasizes narrative drawing, the development of visual methodologies for research and the self-defining of a personal creative practice by theoretical context and by collaboration. This structure also reflects my continuing illustration practice. I am retiring from my post as course leader of the MA this year. I am still supervising a Phd. I anticipate still doing a little teaching for a while and I am currently working (in my shed) on a book project which is complete nonsense and very serious.
