Brighton’s Christmas lights will be a little different this year, with emojis and words set to light up the sky. Phrases and words like ‘Ding Dong’ and ‘Fairy’ will be up in lights, to reflect the city’s ‘eclectic, fun and social atmosphere’. There will also be icicle lights, baubles, and sparkling 3D trees on buildings around the city centre. Comedian Steve Coogan will flick the switch to reveal the new lights at the big switch on event on Wednesday, November 16. From 5pm, there will be a party on East Street as dance duo Phats and Small and Brighton producers Kideko and George Kwali take to

the stage, and the Theatre Workshop and Dionne Slater Singing Group will also perform before the new lights are switched on. The lights are funded by businesses in the city centre through the Brilliant Brighton initiative, where an additional 1.25 per cent on top of their business rates is put in a pot to spend on improving the city. Gavin Stewart, CEO of Brilliant Brighton, said: “We’re really looking forward to this year’s big Christmas light switch-on. It’s a great opportunity for the city’s residents and businesses to get together and celebrate Brighton at the most wonderful time of year!” “We hope to see as many people come down and join the party, as well as taking selfies with their favourite lights too!”

Fears that boundary change could wipe Hove off the map Bex Bastable
bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable
Campaigning residents told the Boundary Commission that planned constituency changes would rip the heart out of Hove and turn their town into ‘West Brighton’. OfficialsfromtheBoundary Commission visited the city this week, as part of a public consultation on boundary changes, which would see the three constituencies in Brighton and Hove radically altered. The Hove constituency would become ‘Brighton Central and Hove’, gaining a chunk of Brighton Pavilion’s territory, but losing Hove Park. Residents said they feared Hove as a distinct entity would disappear, like Middlesex. Amy Kitching, chair of the East Brunswick Residents’ Association (EBRA), said:
“We feel this devastating news for Hove. We have a long and proud history as an independent borough and then an equal partner in the city. “I think people in Hove are going to be very upset at the thought of Hove vanishing and becoming just an offshoot of something called Brighton Central. Hove is Hove.” Rob Shepherd, a Hove resident, told Boundary Commission officials: “You are proposing to rip out a vital organ of Hove – Hove Park ward – and transplant it to alien Brighton. Hove’s central and much-loved green space, Hove Park – plus Hove Park School, Hove Recreation Ground, Hove Greens, Hove Park Road – all suddenly in Brighton. “And what’s left of Hove you plan to turn into a form of lesser Brighton. Central, and Hove receiving second billing. You’re taking the heart of Brighton – with all the Brighton landmarks, such as its seafront, its Lanes and North Laine, and the Brighton Pavilion – and asking the people of Hove to become a part of that. An adjunct to it. West Brighton in all but name.”
He added: “Ever since Brighton and Hove became a unitary authority in 1997, the ancient parish and then borough of Hove has been preserved in its own right on the political map only as a constituency: with these proposals, it vanishes. “Hove is fighting for its survival and it has until

The premises, formerly the Emporium, was taken on and renovated by director James Weisz in 2015, under the name of 88 London Road. But Mr Weisz said his world had been ‘turned upside down’ after the news that the landlord is set to put the property on the market. The theatre’s cafe at the premises closed two weeks ago, as it was becoming ‘a drain on the theatre company’.

Council tax rise to fund more police The Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner will ask households if they would be willing to pay around £5 extra per year in council tax to fund more than 100 new police officers and specialist staff. Katy Bourne announced yesterday (Thursday), that she wants to hear people’s views on proposals to raise the police precept to create an extra £3 million for policing each year. Mrs Bourne said: “We need the right people, with the right skills in the right place to protect you and fight crime. That’s why I want to invest in 100 new officers and staff in specialist teams to strengthen local policing and keep our communities safe.” A public consultation will begin next week on the Sussex Police website and at public engagement events across Sussex, and will close in January 2017. The PCC will then present her recommendations on whether to propose a rise in the precept to the Police and Crime Panel in January.

More will be revealed in due course.” In the meantime, performances continue at the theatre, until the final performance of Beauty and the Beast, on January 1, 2017, when the theatre will close. Govia says union is ‘determined to cancel Christmas’ with new strikes
Meeting on bringing rail back into public hands
Southern Rail operation it is disgraceful that neither the company or the government are prepared to engage and are continuing to attempt to impose DOO in the interests of putting profit before safety. We call on them to get round the negotiating table rather than jamming their heads in the sand.” A statement from Govia Thameslink said: “Not content with causing months ofmisery, theRMThasnowhit a new low and is determined to cancel Christmas for the travelling public. These latest strikes will not just hit families wanting to get home for Christmas but also the shops and businesses for whom Christmas is their busiest time. These strikes are spiteful, vindictive and pointless given the majority of conductors have now signed up to the new on-board role. This has never been about safety; it’s purely about the RMT hanging on to outdated working practices and union power.”
Bringing the railway back into public ownership will be discussed at an ‘emergency meeting’ in Brighton next week. Brighton Pavilion’s Green MP Caroline Lucas, Garry Hassell of the RMT union, and Emily Yates, the Brighton-based co-founder of the Association of British Commuters, are to discuss a campaign to ‘bring Brighton’s railways back into public ownership and finally put passengers first’. The Association of British Commuters is the group which has crowdfunded more than £25,000 to take legal action against the government over its handling of the Southern Rail crisis. The public meeting, hosted by the Brighton and Hove Green Party, is to be held at the Jury’s Inn behind Brighton railway station, on Wednesday November 9, from 7pm. The RMT union has announced its conductors will take strike action on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. The union has taken industrial action six times this year in the longrunning dispute with Govia Thameslink. Its seventh strike starts today (Friday) for 48 hours. The RMT already had plans for its members to strike from November 22 to 23, and December 6 to 8, but the union announced additional dates yesterday (Thursday). Further action is set to take place from December 22 to 24 and from December 31 to January 2. The dispute is over the introduction of driver-only operations (DOO), which sees drivers, not conductors operating the train doors. The RMT has objected to the proposals on safety

It was chaos for Brighton commuters once again on Tuesday evening, when urgent work on the tracks at Wivelsfield ground train services to a halt. Brightonians attempting to get home from London were delayed for hours, with many having to catch replacement bus services from Three Bridges, take cabs or even stay in hotels. Katie Snaydon, who lives in Brighton and commutes to London, got caught up in the chaos on Tuesday, and said: “If there’s a problem with the line in the Wivelsfield or Balcombe area that’s game over for the Brighton line. It’s a complete farce that there is no contingency plan in place to account for this. Meanwhile tired, stressed and anxious commuters are left stranded atThreeBridgespastmidnight on a week night, with little or no communication from staff.” Charlotte Schroeter, a journalist from Brighton, told the Brighton & Hove Independent on Twitter: “First day commuting. Left work 30 mins earlier due
to it and got home 30 mins later than expected. Got a train travelling a completely different route to find a way home.” Another frustrated commuter Michael Wheeler said: “Gave up on getting home and stayed over. Thank god for corporate AMEX.” A Govia Thameslink spokesperson said: “We sincerely apologise to passengers who were delayed on Tuesday night as a result of disruption caused by infrastructure problems in the Wivelsfield area. “Shortly before the rush hour, an electrical fault burned a hole in a rail near Wivelsfield after which further serious track defects were found. There was no alternative but to suspend services between Haywards Heath and Brighton and provide replacement buses while Network Rail engineers replaced the damaged rail to ensure our trains could operate safely on Wednesday morning.”

them. The tickets are being sold on the ‘dark web’ by an alleged group of fraudsters, according to the BBC investigation. The group, which has not been named, said in a statement, “No-one should be ashamed of getting one over companies like Southern Rail. We wish one day everyone will be able to use an affordable public service. Until then, we will be providing it.”
A spokesperson for the Rail Delivery Group, representing train companies, said: “Fare dodgers deprive the railway of about £200 million every year, money which could otherwise be spent improving services. Being in possession of a forged ticket is a criminal offence and risks a hefty fine or prison sentence. Train companies work closely with the British Transport Police to combat and investigate fraud, and
operators take a range of measures to make sure that customers are buying and using the correct tickets. Staff carry out regular inspections on trains and at stations. “Sadly there will always be people who try to get away with not paying or to gain financially. The vast majority of passengers who do pay the correct fare don’t feel they should subsidise those who choose not to.”

The retirement party for Trevor Love (front centre, standing to the left of the mayor, Cllr Pete West)
It’s goodbye for city’s Mr Love
Katie Garrett
news@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @BrightonIndy
The registrar who married theUK’sfirstsame-sexcouple has retired after 14 years of performing ceremonies in Brighton and Hove. The aptly named Trevor Love, Brighton and Hove City Council’s senior ceremonies registrar, has played a part in many historic milestones. He conducted the first civil partnership in Brighton Town Hall in 2005, and the first same-sex marriage in the whole of the UK in 2014, marrying Andrew Wale and Neil Allard. Not only was this the first same-sex marriage in the UK, it was also Brighton’s first
late-night wedding and the first wedding to take place in the music room of the Royal Pavilion. On top of these achievements Mr Love also married an Olympic figure skating champion, Richard Fairbrass from Right Said Fred and Peter James the author, as well as conducting the first wedding to take place on the i360 recently. Having been at the centre of so many significant events, Mr Love performed his final ceremony last Wednesday. A retirement party was thrown for him last Friday, attended by his friends and colleagues, as well as the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Pete West. Valerie Pearce, a colleague of Mr Love’s at the council,
said: “I worked with Trevor for around 14 years and he was a great registrar and a charming, people-orientated person who gave great customer service to the citizens of Brighton. “He was involved in lots of major LGBT historical events in the city.” Anne Youles, 55, who was married by Mr Love in 2011, paid tribute to him: “We were so lucky to have Trevor as our registrar. He did such an amazing job on our wedding day and made us feel so comfortable and relaxed. He was quite humorous and light-hearted.” Mr Love’s successor at Brighton and Hove registry office will be Dendi WolffskyBatson.
We will remember them Remembrance services will be held across Brighton and Hove next week to remember the city’s fallen soldiers. In the lead up to the memorials the Royal British Legion launched its Poppy Appeal last week, and the remembrance events in the city will begin with a blessing on Thursday, November 10, at the Old Steine Memorial Gardens. Deputy mayor Jo Marsh will attend an event at the Old Steine War Memorial in Brighton, from 11am on Armistice Day (Friday, November 11).
Mayor Pete West will be among those observing a two-minute silence at the Hove War Memorial in Grand Avenue on Friday at 11am. People are advised to arrive at the events early to avoid disruption. Other events on Sunday, November 13, will include: a Royal Sussex Regimental Association Remembrance Service at 9am in Regency Square; A Royal British Legion parade departing from outside the Sea Life Centre at 10.40am, marching to the west side of the Old Steine War Memorial for a
two-minute silence at 11am; a wreath-laying ceremony at the Easthill Park Memorial at 11am; and a wreath laying ceremony at Hove Cemetery at the North and South Gate Memorial; a full remembrance service at All Saints Church, Hove from 2.30pm; and a service by the Association of Jewish ExServicemen and Women’s Service at the Middle Street Synagogue, Hove, at 4.25pm. Eco activists in Brighton and Hove are taking a stand against fracking Sarah George and Ivor Jones
news@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @BrightonIndy
Environmental campaigners donning Halloween costumes peacefully protested against fracking outside Barclays bank on Saturday. The demonstration, which drew dozens from all walks of life, was part of a nationwide week of action against fracking, organised by Friends of the Earth. Among the protestors outside the North Street branch was retired head teacher Hillary Harris. She said: “I think fracking is one of the most dangerous things that’s currently happening in Britain. It will be a slippery slope and there will be more and more fracking once it starts, so I’m very committed to stopping it.” Barclays has come under fire from campaigners because one of its subsidiaries, Global Natural Resources Investments owns 97 per cent of Third Energy

which is planning to frack in North Yorkshire. Although the issue of fracking was seen by many present as an environmental concern, Alex Mabbs, minister at the Brighthelm Centre, said it was also a religious issue. He said: “I
believe God is particularly concerned about the poorest and the most vulnerable in our world. “Climate change is already hitting some of the poorest people on the earth. Those of us who are wealthier and safer need to take the
lead in action against global warming, and that means cutting back. This is why fracking is a Christian issue. “ Matt Traini, who is a Green party member, said: “I think this is a fight we can win. The public seem to stand up against issues when they are
in their area. Hopefully, even if the government overrules places like Lancashire, people will go up there and stop people getting in like they did in Balcombe.” Localsfoughtformorethan two years to stop Balcombe in West Sussex from becoming a fracking site, and the Balcombe protests led to the arrest of Brighton MP Caroline Lucas along with four others, though they were later cleared of all charges. A Barclays spokesperson said: “Third Energy has been drilling, developing and producing gas in the region for over 20 years, with an excellent environmental and safety record. We are conscious of the concerns of local communities and other groups over potential environmental and community impacts, which we take seriously and will continue to monitor. We have worked closely with Third Energy to ensure their plans are compatible with our values.”

Pavilion ice rink to open its doors
Anti-social behaviour targeted at The Level
The Royal Pavilion’s ice rink was set to be opened by Olympic skating hopefuls Zoe Wilkinson and Christopher Boyadji last night (Thursday). The rink opens to the public at 10am on Saturday until January 15. The Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Cllr Pete West, saidh: “My family and I havehadareallywonderful time at the launch of the Royal Pavilion ice rink. We always love it here, both taking a spin on the ice and enjoying the restaurant. The city is so lucky to have the rink here every winter and in such an amazing location.” Find out more at: www. royalpavilionicerink.co.uk
Police in Brighton and Hove say they are ‘actively addressing’ concerns over anti-social behaviour at The Level. Superintendent James Collis said the force had seen positive results from its outreach work in the Tarner Park area, where PCSOs worked with teenagers in the area to solve issues, including asking the groups to be quiet after 9pm, and not to swear when children were nearby. He said: “In turn the teenagers asked if the flood lights could be put back on so they felt safer in the park.” A similar approach would be used for The Level, he said.
Young migrants welcomed to club A group of 25 young people from 14 different countries visited the Brighton Table Tennis Club (BTTC) this week. The young visitors are all members of the Dost Centre, a youth club for migrant children based in Newham. Tim Holtam, director of BTTC, said: “They loved Brighton, our club and the Yellow Wave. They met club
members and coaches and members of BTTC Team Afghanistan, which plays in the local league. And they greatly enjoyed the ping-pong. The message from our club is loud and clear: refugees are welcome here.” A registered charity, Brighton Table Tennis Club is the UK’s first Sports Club of Sanctuary.
Fireworks display at racecourse for charity
Roadworks at Falmer will cause diversions
A fundraising fireworks night will be held by the Brighton Lions at the racecourse on Saturday evening. The group has been holding fireworks events in the city for more than 30 years, and profits from the night go to local charities and organisations supported by the Lions. The event at the racecourse opens to the public at 6pm, and the fireworks display begins at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 per adult and £5 for children.
East Sussex Highways said overnight roadworks will take place from next Tuesday to resurface The Drove roundabout at Falmer. The work is set to begin at on Tuesday evening, and finish on Saturday. Workmen will be on site between 8pm and 6am for four nights, and during this time the A27 slip road will be closed. There will be a diversion in place, as well as traffic lights on the roundabout. Royal recognition for city’s newest attraction as Prince Phillip visits PHOTOGRAPH: STEVE PARSONS/PA WIRE

A member of the Royal Family visited Brighton last week to officially open the i360. Prince Philip, 95, took a flight on and formally opened the i360 tower on Friday, before meeting its designers and members of the city council. When told it was a great honour that he had come to visit to open British Airways i360, The Duke of Edinburgh said: “It’s been open. But it’s more open than usual.” The Prince, who has a keen interest in engineering, met the architects and engineers behind the construction, which rises 138m above Brighton beach. The attraction was designed by Marks Barfield Architects, the firm behind the London Eye. Julia Barfield, of Marks Barfield, said: “I’m pleased he has come because he’s a real expert in engineering.
Prince Phillip on the British Airways i360
We heard a speech from him years ago and he was talking about engineering without any prompts or notes.” Dr John Roberts, chief engineer, said: “He asked really interesting questions
about how the tower doesn’t move in the wind. He was very interested, he knew what he was talking about. It’s fantastic that he’s visited. Royals don’t often visit private attractions.”
Meanwhile, outside crowds gathered to greet the Prince. Florence Fearn-Hughes, aged seven, gave him flowers and a card outside the attraction. The card said: “Dear Prince Philip, I hope
you enjoy your time on the i360. I have been up there and It’s lovely. Love, Florence.” On the way out, His Royal Highness thanked Florence again for her gift and, when she asked him if he enjoyed the i360, he joked: “It’s terrible!” British Airways i360 chairman and architect David Marks said: “His Royal Highness is a fantastic champion of good design in arts and industry and has furthered this cause with energy and passion for more than 50 years. “Knowing The Duke of Edinburgh’s love of engineering and innovation, we were absolutely delighted and honoured that he agreed to open British Airways i360. “Everyone who has been involved in the project is deeply honoured that the Duke of Edinburgh opened British Airways i360 today and it has been a pleasure showcasing this new landmark to His Royal Highness.”
Westwood to discuss activism at city event Fashion designer and activist Dame Vivienne Westwood is to talk about her new book ‘Get a Life!’ alongside Green MP Caroline Lucas at an event in Brighton. Dame Westwood, the ‘cocreator of punk’, will discuss her trips to the Amazon rainforest, driving a tank to David Cameron’s Cotswolds home in an anti-fracking protest, and convincing her celebrity friends to join her on marches. Of her new book, she said: “‘My diaries are about the things I care about. Not just fashion but art and writing, human rights, climate change, freedom. I call the diaries Get a Life! as that’s how I feel: you’ve got to get involved, speak out and take action.” The famous fashion queen is set to provide ‘an insightful and interesting conversation’ with Caroline Lucas. The event run by City Books will be held at the Brighton Dome on Friday, November 18. Tickets are £12.50. Visit: brightondome.org

The NHS must be a truly public service
I
n the last few weeks the desperate state of our local health service has come sharply into focus. Last week, I held a debate in parliament to push ministers to step up and support our NHS. We have a hospital and emergency ambulance service in special measures, patients in the city have seen six GP practices close so far this year alone and our patient transport service is also in dire straits. Ministers cannot say they haven’t been told. This week I met the Care Quality Commission. A key topic was the scandal that has engulfed our patient transport service, which separate from the emergency ambulance service, takes people to hospital for non-emergency but vital treatment like dialysis and chemotherapy. The service has been run by a private firm called Coperforma for the last seven months. It co-ordinates 1,500 patient journeys each day but it does not own or operate its own ambulances here in Sussex. Instead it takes bookings and sends out vehicles owned by subcontractors. The patient transport service has been beset by problems, with patients reporting delays reaching appointments and drivers reporting that they had not been paid. Last week things went from bad to worse when it was revealed that at least one firm which has been driving vulnerable people to hospital was operating without a license to do so. Such was the chaos around whether a fleet of 30 ambulances had been operating illegally, that a government minister falsely claimed to me in Parliament that the NHS body who had agreed the contract, the Clinical Commissioning Group (or CCG), had ordered Coperforma to stop using the firm in question: Docklands Medical Services Ltd. He has since phoned me and issued a formal correction, admitting the CCG had not, in fact, taken this action. The minister clearly does not have a grip. When I spoke to the CCG about the serious issues with the patient transport services, they told me that one of the problems is identifying responsibility when things go wrong. It’s a confusing situation but it boils down to a stark fact: the web of private firms in our health service has led to an accountability vacuum, which has put patients at risk. Such an arrangement – of private firms operating crucial parts of our NHS – was always deeply concerning, and it is welcome that, this week we have learnt that Coperforma will be handing this service back to the NHS in a transition which will see their contract end by April next year. South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation
A privately-operated Coperforma ambulance.
Trust is to take over the service. This service should never have been outsourced to the private sector in the first place and patients and staff will be relieved that at last there is a plan to bring the service back into the NHSthough some very grave questions remain to be asked about how it was possible for a fleet of 30 ambulances to be run without a licence during the summer. Ministers must now get a grip and end this accountability vacuum. We must have an absolute assurance that patient transport services are operating within the law. And let’s be clear: I am not confident that ministers are in charge of this situation, not least given the fact that the responsible minister wasn’t able to get his story straight in the first place. It’s worth noting that the crisis in our NHS is happening despite the amazing work of healthcare professionals in our city. Our doctors, nurses, midwives, drivers and others working across Brighton & hove work incredibly hard to look after patients – and have been undermined by systemic failures from private firms and the government. There is no simple solution to the crisis in our NHS but two simple steps from the government could go a long way to improve the situation. Firstly they must put an end to the disastrous outsourcing experiment by committing to reinstating the NHS as a truly public service. Publicly paid for and publicly provided. Secondly, the chancellor should commit the government to increasing spending on the NHS in this year’s Autumn statement. We have an ageing population, and services are extremely stretched, yet the increase in spending under the Conservatives has been less than at any time since the 1950s – that situation must change. Our NHS is the most precious public service we have – and I’ll continue to do everything within my power to protect and improve health provision here in Brighton and Hove.

Labour councillor and council leader
Transforming how we talk to each other
I
n 2017, we will transform the way the city council works with you and your communities. The days of topdown service provision are coming to an end, the days of the council deciding what is best, the days of you hanging on a phone waiting to report something, only to be told you have called the wrong department. Whether it is online, on your mobile or at a local help centre, we will be transforming how we talk to each other. Simple things like paying your council tax or signing up for our new garden waste collection service should be easy on our website and, in the future, via an app. But we want to do more. You should, as with Facebook, be able to tell us what you are interested in, like schools, or parks, or volunteering. Based on your interests and where you live we should be able to tell you what is going on in your area, from roadworks to community activities and more. Some of this is already in place. Of course some people will want to speak to someone directly, and others are not able to access services online. Moving more customer services online will free up our call centres to help these residents more easily. What has been created in Hove Town
Access council services from your smartphone
Hall – a centre where you can speak to the police, council, health, citizens advice, credit union and other services - is a model we would like to replicate in communities across the city over time, building on our existing libraries, children’s centres and other local facilities if we can. Ideally people coming into council offices will be helped with how to make reports online, like for fly-tipping and potholes, so they can do it from home next time. If funding and joint working allow, we would like new combined teams of
neighbourhood officers to be able to deal with a wide range of planning, highways, anti-social behaviour, littering, noise and other issues, using new technology to liaise with specialist teams – teams who can then spend less time travelling and more time on complex cases. How can we afford this kind of change at a time of huge government cuts? Some of the new ways of working with residents is being funded by the sale of our huge seafront office in Hove, reducing our operating costs and giving us much needed
one-off capital to invest in your services. Working more online will save us money too, enabling us to spend the money we have left where it is most needed, helping us to get the basics right. Bringing services closer to you, working cooperatively with you and your neighbourhood to design services around what you need to tackle locally, will also mean problems are dealt with at an earlier stage, and cost us all less. You can help design these services with us; it is one of the fundamental cooperative principles that guide how I and my team are leading the council’s work. We are, as central government cuts the money we spend on your services by over a third, going to need to do things differently, work in partnership with other agencies and use the experience, innovation and enthusiasm I know is out there in our city, to keep Brighton and Hove as the fantastic place it is. We want to make sure that every neighbourhood, every family, every resident is given the chance to join in with local initiatives, get easy access to the services they need, and help play their part in building a better city by the sea.

Solving the endless debacle by Southern Fail
O
n Tuesday evening along with hundreds of others, I found myself stranded outside Three Bridges Station. An electrical fault terminated the service. It had been only a matter of time before I too became another survivor of the cancelled and delayed services. My train was due to arrive at 22:56pm I actually arrived on a coach at 2:20am. The media have focused on the delayed services and dispute between the unions and rail companies with little or no mention of how the privatisation of the railways has been a disaster. Yet this dispute is about one thing: trains without a conductor are less safe. I support the RMT call to keep conductors on trains to protect our safety and be there in the event of accidents. In September Prime Minister Theresa May talked about an “economy that works for everybody. It’s not enough just to take a hands-off approach, we need bold action at home.” Yet despite the rhetoric, we have had little action from the Conservative government. Southern’s Chief Executive Officer made a cool £2.2m in 2015 and has £99.8m in profits – while passengers regularly find themselves on overcrowded platforms with no trains, no announcements and no help. All this for the price of a train ticket that has mushroomed at twice the rate of wages in the last few years. Southern are the very sort of company who need ‘bold action.’ The Association of British Commuters has successfully raised enough to pay for a lawyer to represent commuters to the Department for Transport and drag the unsavoury truth about the Southern rail franchise into the public eye. But it shouldn’t have ever come to this. Our city this year suffered a million
fewer visitors – after all why would you go to Brighton and Hove if you can’t actually get there? Business people are tired of the uncertainty that the trains impose and have begun to cite it as the reason not to invest here. They are joined by angry and heart-broken commuters missing valued time with their friends, partners and families. However, the failure of the Government to act on Southern is not accidental, it is wilful. When the East Coast Main Line franchise failed and was renationalised by government, it returned more than £1bn to taxpayers, and had a 91% customer satisfaction rate – a far cry from Southern’s 25%. It was too much to expect the Conservative government to do anything other than put their privatisation mantra ahead of the public need. They reprivatised the line. There is a legal duty for Southern to maximise profits for its shareholders which crazily leaves little incentive for companies to prioritise us- the passengers. Far from being some leftwing dream, renationalising the railways could be about the only thing that will work. Greens on the city council have repeatedly called on the Government to: strip Southern of its franchise and bring it into public hands; take immediate steps to restore services, reduce overcrowding and improve reliability. We will push for an assessment of the impact the chaos has had on the local economy. We need the rails brought back into public ownership to put passengers first. The Green Party has called a public meeting with the RMT and Association of British Commuters. Wednesday 9th November 7PM, Jury’s Inn, Brighton Station. All welcome.

The BBC announced its plans to launch Wannabes, an interactive web-based soap opera about young people in Brighton next year. The programme, aimed at 14to 18-year-olds, would follow the trials and tribulations of a group of youngsters attempting to start creative careers in music, television and film.
Albion splashed out a record £15,000 for 22-year-old Tony Nicholas from Chelsea. The forward topped the goalscoring charts at the end of his first season – 13 in 27 starts – but was part of George Curtis’s cull in 1962 after relegation to the Third Division. The Handsworth Times by Sharon Duggal (Blue Moose)
It’s 1981 and trouble is brewing in Handsworth. So much trouble that it is teetering on the brink of destruction. The riots are out of control. Factories are closing, unemployment is high and the police are out of control and so is the drinking at the Black Eagle. The Agarwal family are seemingly oblivious of the whirlwind of chaos that is heading their way. Their daughter Anila is reading Smash Hits and their son Billy is out on his bike, somewhere in the city that is about to explode. The five children of Mukesh Agarwal are normal kids, doing normal things, unaware of the tensions that surround them. They listen to pop music (the references to 80s songs will have you joyfully humming them all day) and are living the sort of inner city life that was accepted in Thatcher’s fractured society. What will happen to them all? It’s hope against hope that their love of life and belief in the goodness of people will survive. There are some unexpected friendships and some losses but ultimately this is a book of redemption and hope set against what was (for those of us that remember it) some of the worst riots that Britain has ever seen. Blue Moose is a small publisher but punches above its weight with amazingly good books. This is one of them. Do treat yourself to a damn fine read.
Sussex Postcard Club announces meeting The Sussex Postcard Club will host its next meeting on Tuesday, November 8. Graham Chainey From psychic fraudster to film pioneer
A
lready in his teens George Albert Smith was an entertainer. A short, curlyhaired youth, with conjuring skills and an ability to fool audiences, by 1882, aged 18, he was performing a mesmerism routine in such Brighton venues as the Ventnor Villas Lecture Hall, the St James’s Hall, the Town Hall, and the Aquarium. Douglas Blackburn, editor of The Brightonian weekly paper, was impressed when he saw his own office boy, Mahoney, step up to be “put under the influence and made to do ridiculous things”. When Mahoney later confided that Smith paid him a shilling a night, “the bogus character of the business became obvious”. In the next stage of Smith’s long and colourful career, he and Blackburn managed to attract the interest of the Society for Psychical Research in their mind-reading act. Edmund Gurney (whose mysterious death I recounted last week) and other credulous members came down to witness this stunt (it was all done with coded coughs, hand-squeezes and the like) and delightedly wrote it up as genuine psychic phenomena. (Years later,
George Albert Smith
Blackburn confessed all.) Soon Smith was working as Gurney’s secretary, and giving equally dubious displays to the society, involving such local lads as Fred Wells, a baker’s boy, a cabinetmaker called Conway, or a telegraph clerk called Tigar – who presumably all earned their shilling. When in Brighton, Gurney, the Myers brothers, or Professor Sidgwick would stay at Smith’s mother’s boarding house in Grand Parade. (Trevor Hall speculates that it was Smith’s sister Alice,
who participated in the psychic fraud, who finally tipped off Gurney, leading to his suicide.) After Gurney’s death in 1888, Smith continued with the SPR. Just three months later, we find him moving with his new wife into a haunted house in Prestonville Road that Gurney had been investigating, whose previous tenants had been driven out by poltergeist activity. In December, Smith duly reported hearing a sound in the hall like “half a brick” on a piece of string being “jerked about the linoleum” – but how reliable was his testimony? In his next incarnation, Smith in 1892 leased St Ann’s Well Gardens in Hove. Here he had a monkey house, Gipsy Lee in her caravan, swings and seesaws, glasshouses producing grapes and cucumbers, trapeze artists and jugglers. On Whit Monday 1894, 3,000 visitors paid their 3d admission. That June, Neil Campbell made a “balloon ascent and thrilling parachute descent” from the gardens (he landed ignominiously in the cemetery, breaking a tombstone). It was here that Smith first became interested in the medium for which he is now best remembered, being a leading luminary of the “Brighton School” of film
pioneers, whose exponents included William Friese-Greene (commemorated by a plaque at 20 Middle Street), Esmé Collings (who shot the world’s first “blue” film in 1896 – suitable for “gentlemen’s smoking concert audiences only”), James Williamson the Church Road chemist, and Alfred Darling who made Smith’s cameras. Smith began by making one-minute “living pictures” of local scenes, including one of his sister, Mrs Attwick, falling from her bicycle, which amused Queen Victoria when she saw it. He is said to be the first filmmaker to use double exposures and close-ups. Moving to Roman Crescent, Southwick, he built a workshop where he developed Kinemacolour, the world’s first commercial colour film, and was soon exporting films to America. Smith filmed Edward VII’s funeral and the Prince of Wales’s visit to India, and in later life received many awards for his work. Aged 93, then living at 18 Chanctonbury Road, Hove, he was invited to the opening of the National Film Theatre, meeting Princess Margaret, Gina Lollobrigida and other celebrities – a far cry from his early days doing the Brighton halls. He died in 1959, aged 95, in Brighton General Hospital.

will confirm the winners on November 25. Let’s hope for the sweet smell of success! I’m not keen on doing touch ups, but hankered to try a handbag-sized melting, silky ‘0.09 Touch Au Ginseng’ powder with a velvety finish, because the Erborian CC creme is such a firm favourite (both now come in light shades). The 0.09 name refers to the minimal water in this Erborian formulation. With only 0.09% aqua, this hybrid powder is almost water-free and has a bouncy texture that smoothes out unevenness in tone, and adds broad spectrum SPF20 protection. The shiny clam compact has a tiny blotting pad and mirror, and you only need a little of this product. Touch Au Ginseng gives a satiny instead of papery blot finish to my shiny forehead (I have dry/mature skin) and down my nose. The
ingredients include anti-ageing and antioxidant White Ginseng Complex, Licorice Root Extract which reduces the production of melanin (responsible for pigmentation marks) and Centella Asiatica, which increases collagen production and antioxidant activity. Usually £27 for 8g but currently £17 if you spend more than £45 on other lines - uk.erborian.com/009touch-au-ginseng,7,1,1088,0.htm. What else looks great with a cashmere jumper? Supersized cat-eye flicks of course (I think they go with everything, incase you hadn’t noticed). My latest colour crush is Illamasqua’s Precision Gel Liner in Quixotic for a gleaming pop of kingfisher metallic emerald. This can also double as long wearing base, £20. While you are shopping check out the Extinct Gift boxes - I dare you not to hyperventilate, they are so gorgeous.

‘What do women want?’ asks new party’s leader Annie Hopkins
news@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @BrightonIndy
The leader of the Women’s Equality Party gave a voice to her supporters in Brighton by asking ‘What do women want?’. Sophie Walker gave a lively speech at the Brighthelm Centre last Wednesday, followed by a group discussion on how legislation should reflect women’s needs. “We are using this radical new approach, which is to listen,” said Ms Walker. “If you really want to represent people you’ve got to listen to them.” Key issues discussed at the event included the pay gap, occupational segregation – an education system which steers boys and girls in different career directions – and childcare. Alexandra Scott, 58, said: “I’ve been overlooked for jobs that I was perfectly qualified
to do because I was a woman with younger children at the time. “Now as my daughter is in her 30s I see the same for her and would like that to change.” Steve Smith, a 60-year-old counsellor from Patcham, summed up his frustrations by saying: “What women want is no more than what men have.” Ms Walker emphasised it would be essential for men, women, and even those who may not call themselves feminists, to join forces and make equality a priority. “So long as you care about diversity, inclusivity and equality, this is a party for you” she said. Ellen Wood, 20, had come to the event in hopes of finding a new political direction. “I’m bored of British politics,” she said. “I’m here because this is something new and I find that interesting.”

More than 1,300 people gathered for TEDxBrighton, a day of inspirational talks at Brighton Dome on Friday. The event, entitled We Can Be Heroes, celebrated the idea of impact and all 18 speakers had a unique story to tell. Steve Stuart, head of marketing for TEDxBrighton, said: “The talks cover a wide range of topics which we hope will give everyone the inspiration around that idea of them becoming their own hero. Obviously there’s a nod to David Bowie, but it’s also about the journey people can take in their lives and showing they can achieve whatever they want if they believe.” Speakers included Rizzle Kicks star Jordan Stephens, presenter and actor Adam Pearson, Professor Karen Pine and the teenager Beau Jessup. Whitney Iles, chief executive of Project 507, brought the audience to their feet with her moving speech
We Can Be Heroes was the theme
about her social work with violent offenders in British prisons. The programme also saw dance spectacles from the young performers of Streetfunk. The Ideas Lab, an interactive exhibition of local innovators, artists and charities, ran throughout the day. Ken IIzuka, an illustrator and designer from Brighton, said: “It’s incredible to get this mix of people from different backgrounds who are all leaders in their own way. Inspiring people on a mass scale is always great – you want to be here, the energy is definitely something people feed off.”

‘Tired decisions’ risk as overtime and spending cuts bite police service
Michael Drummond investigates the challenges facing police in Sussex as officer numbers and budgets are cut Michael Drummond
michael.drummond@jpress.co.uk 01903 282306
Police officers in Sussex are losing out on much needed rest and time with their families because they are working huge amounts of overtime, it has been said. A Freedom of Information request made to Sussex Police has revealed that officers worked 190,463 hours of overtime in 2015-16. This is nearly the same amount that an extra 100 officers would do in a year, based on a 37 hour working week. “We haven’t got enough police officers, it is as simple as that,” said Matt Webb, chairman of the Sussex Police Federation, the staff association representing police officers in Sussex. “Tired officers make tired decisions,” he added. Overtime is only worked by the lowest two ranks of police officer, police constable and sergeant. “They are the ones who are delivering the service, working themselves into the ground,” said Mr Webb. “It means they don’t spend as much time as they should with their families and they don’t spend as much time as they should recovering from
their service.” This year Sussex Police’s core grant from the government was cut by £871,000 (0.6 per cent) from last year, despite George Osborne promising in autumn last year there would be ‘no cuts in the police budget at all’ and ‘real terms protection for police funding’. A small portion of local police funding comes directly from council tax paid by Sussex residents, known as the Police Precept. Following public consultation, the Sussex Police and Crime Panel approved a motion earlier this year that raised the share of each household’s council tax going to the police. This works out at an extra £5 per year for Band D households. Sussex Police is currently implementing its Local Policing Model that will see 500 officer posts cut from the workforce, as well as 500 other staff. The four year plan, announced last year, aims to cut £56 million as part of its vision for policing in 2020. The Freedom of Information request also revealed a change to working regulations has meant more than £175,000 of overtime has gone unpaid. Per national police regulations, officers working
unscheduled overtime are not paid for the first 30 minutes of extra time. The remaining overtime can be claimed as either extra pay or time off in lieu at officers’ discretion. The first half hour was disregarded on 21,070 occasions in 2015-16, adding up to 11,450 hours, Roger Brace, information officer for Sussex Police, confirmed. Added up, these hours had a monetary value of about £179,700, according to Mr Brace. Asked about the impact of such a high amount of officers’ work going unpaid, Matt Webb confirmed that the view of the Sussex Police Federation was that ’officers are paid in accordance with regulations’. He added that officers had received an uplift in salary to compensate for the new overtime regulation but that it was ‘certainly cheaper to do it that way’. “Some people are going to be winners in that scheme and some are going to be losers,” he added. Meanwhile Sussex Police is recruiting civilians to investigate crimes. Crime investigators are being hired across Sussex for tasks such as ‘gathering evidence, interviewing suspects and taking witness
statements’, a spokesperson for Sussex Police confirmed. “Historically our position has been that if you want someone to do an officer’s job it has got to be a police officer,” said Mr Webb when asked about the new drive to recruit civilian crime investigators. “We understand how the force has got to save money and having civilian staff is cheaper than officers,” he added. However Mr Webb says the federation supports the move so long as there are enough police officers for roles that require a warranted officer. “I would rather see police officers on the front line than I would having them sat in an office somewhere doing paperwork and admin around an investigation.’’ The new crime investigator positions are currently advertised on the Sussex Police website with salaries between £20,874 and £29,307, with the lower band roughly the same as the starting salary for a PC, Mr Webb says. However he added that police constables can earn £35,000 and above after seven or eight years of service, making crime investigators ‘in the longer term cheaper than police officers because their salary scale is narrower’. Mr Webb predicts that
Sussex Police is currently implementing a new Local Policing Model announced last year that will reduce the number of officers by 500 and overall staff by 1,000 by 2020 in order to save £56 million
some of the work previously done by the 500 officer roles to be cut by Sussex Police by 2020 will be done by these civilian employees. Police officers are also assisted in keeping the community safe by more than 350 special constables. Simon Nelson, chief inspector, said: “During September our 357 special constables provided us with 4,750 duty hours, serving the communities of Sussex. “Some might ask, ‘Well what did they actually do?’
but I think many might be surprised to know our ‘Specials’ are trained, equipped, and have the same legal powers as their regular colleagues. “The police will always need to have a significant number of paid officers that ensure we fulfil our core prevention, response and investigation responsibilities. Our capable uniform volunteers help us to do that better and offer the best possible public service to the people of Sussex, as well as those who visit.”

Behind the Headlines
‘We aim to give officers ample time to plan personal lives’ Following the Freedom of Information request, our reporter contacted Sussex Police and Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne for comment. As Police and Crime Commissioner, Ms Bourne is responsible for setting the strategic direction and priorities for Sussex Police. A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “Officers have the choice to claim for pay or time if the overtime is authorised and carried out within Police Regulations
that entitles them to compensation. “The force endeavour to notify officers as far in advance if they will be required to work a rest day or other overtime, so that gives officers and staff ample time to plan their personal lives, it reduces overtime costs and importantly, complies with Police Regulations. “Departments and divisions request and authorise overtime depending on operational need.” Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne,
said: “As the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, I agree the budget with the chief constable who determines what resources are needed to deliver effective and efficient policing for the performance and delivery of the Police and Crime Plan. “At my monthly performance and accountability meeting I hold the chief constable to account on behalf of residents in Sussex for the performance and delivery of the Police and Crime Plan.”
‘Not enough police in our area’ say 87 per cent of respondents A majority of Sussex residents think there are not enough officers in their area, an informal poll conducted by Sussex Newspapers suggests. An overwhelming 87 per cent of readers said ‘No’ when asked the question ‘do you think there are enough police officers in your area?’
Have police cuts left the public at risk? Are cuts to police a threat to public saftey? Our reporter put the question to Matt Webb, chairman of the Sussex Police Federation, which represents police officers serving in Sussex. “I think nationally there is a risk. With less officers you are only going to be able to do less,” Mr Webb says. At incidents such as the
Shoreham air disaster or the Brighton bomb in 1984, the police had the numbers to deploy reserves where they were needed, according to Mr Webb. He also brought up the London riots which he says prompted a huge deployment of police officers in order to put a stop to the unrest and ensure public safety.
Five years on, does he think cuts to the number of officers pose a security problem? “If the riots happened again I would be surprised if we were able to put that number of officers on the street. “Gathering the right number of police officers is really important,” Mr Webb added, referring to the current level of threat to the UK.

The poll ran for a week between October 26 and November 1 on social media pages across all Johnston Press titles in Sussex, with more than 650 people voting. The passion of readers on the issue of policing in the communities was clear to see, with lots of comments posted in reply to the survey on Facebook:

Two top accolades for Hove accountancy firm Crunch Independent reporter
news@brightonandhoveindependent. co.uk @BrightonIndy
Hove-based Crunch Accounting fought off the likes of KPMG and PwC to win two national business awards last week. Crunch was named Professional Services Firm of the Year at the 2016 British Small Business Awards, presented at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London. With shortlisted firms including Legal & General, PwC and KPMG, the Professional Services Firm award is presented to the company that has gone the furthest to help small businesses. Crunch also received the Practice Growth of the Year 2016 award at the annual AccountingWEB Awards. Darren Fell, CEO and founder of Crunch
Accounting, said: “Helping freelancers, contractors, and micro-businesses find success is the very heart of what we do at Crunch, so it’s wonderful to see that recognised with not one, but two national industry awards! I’m incredibly proud of the whole Crunch team. From our tech whizzes and accountancy masterminds, through to our fantastic marketing and customer support staff - we truly could not have achieved these accolades without you. Thank you!” The award organisers said: “Crunch has a clear vision and a clarity of purpose. More than 300 businesses in Brighton and Hove have got behind the Living Wage, and almost 3,000 salaries have been raised as a result of the move. Brighton Chamber of Commerce, which has led the city’s Living Wage Campaign said the businessled initiative has been ‘hugely successful’ at putting Brighton and Hove on the map as a great example of how the Living Wage can, and should be, the normal minimum level of payment for all employers. A recent survey by the Chamber, also showed 60 per cent of employers in the city said implementing the Living Wage had a positive impact on their business. David Costa, owner of Flowers Unlimited – the 300th business to sign up to the local campaign- said: “Over the last few years we decided to focus on customer service. In floristry most people focus on the flowers – but to us that was a given. For us, our business model works in a circle. If we deliver the highest service possible, we can afford to charge

higher prices; customers get what they’re paying for and appreciate quality service. As a result, our sales increase; we make more money and can afford to pay our staff more. Paying the living wage and signing up to the local campaign feels good, and it’s also a marker on how you’re doing as a business.” To mark Living Wage Week (October 30 to November
5), it was announced today (October 31) that the UK Living Wage was set to rise by 20p to £8.45 per hour, from the current rate of £8.25. Living Wage employers have until April 1, 2017 to implement this new rate. The London Living Wage rate has increased from £9.40 to £9.75 per hour. Grace Evans, projects and marketing manager for
Brighton Chamber, said: “Living Wage Week is an opportunity to celebrate the success of our local campaign and raise the profile of the employers who have signed up. “In previous years it’s been a great way of raising awareness of the living wage and starting important conversations in the city.” In a recent survey, Brighton and Hove businesses that have signed up to the campaign were asked about their experiences. Here are some of the findings: n 70% of businesses noticed a positive impact on their staff. n 60% of businesses also noticed a positive impact on their business. n They went on to say that staff moral improved (56%), productivity levels and quality of work was higher (23%) and employee retention improved (44%). n 36% of businesses use their Living Wage employer status to recruit new members of staff and 32% have used it to win new customers, tenders or bids. Wear your retro finery for one hot Bonfire Night Stage
Hundred Watt Club The Old Market Saturday, November 5
Surrey’s sell-out Hundred Watt Club show returns to the Old Market, Brighton, promising a “sizzling, firecracker of a burlesque show” to celebrate Guy Fawkes night. Producer Lena Mae said: “Why not dress up to the nines in your retro finery and let the ladies and gents of the chorus delight you for a few hours? “On November 5 from 8pm, they will be commanding the stage of The Old Market.
“Tickets are available from theoldmarket.com or by calling 01273 201801. Admission is strictly over18s. “It’s not for the faint hearted. Adult themes are employed and embraced! “Starring the Queen of Queerlesque Rubyyy Jones, madcap pioneers of slapdash magic Griffin & Jones, award-winning burlesque showgirl Didi Derriere and whip-cracking, gun-slinging cabaret cowgirl Ayesha H, the night is hosted by the inimitable acid-tongued songbird Lili La Scala.” Lena continued: “I just adore bringing the show to this gorgeous city. I’m so
excited about the line-up for this event. Bonfire Night has never been this hot!” Hundred Watt Club produces theatre shows, club nights and pop-up shows featuring some of the best UK and international burlesque and cabaret artists. Founded in 2008 by Lena, a Surrey-based burlesque dancer, the first event in an intimate theatre was a sellout and the show continues to go from strength to strength with events across the county and beyond. A tale of self-love, lunacy and pop music Stage
Shesus & the Sistas offer Self-Service: A Resurrection Story at Brighton’s Marlborough Theatre on Friday, November 4 (8pm). Spokeswoman Lauren Meehan promised a story of self-love, lunacy and pop music: “Come and be touched by Shesus & the Sistas, both inside and out.” She continued: “Expect your usual service of hymns, prayers, and communion, with an added feminine force of kale worship, chakra polish and
almond milk blessings. “In a world where the congregation is just as important as the divine herself, be ready to confess, cleanse and be resurrected. “Shesus & the Sistas is the outcome of one woman’s decision to channel her inner messiah complex, along with her bible bookends, real-life twin psychic sidekicks, as her devoted celibate (eternally single) nuns. “After a combined total of 31 years in street and festival entertainment, specialising in audience
engagement and professional tomfoolery, this fearsome trio decided to hit the road to tackle the blackened and glittery souls of Brighton. “If you want a knees up, or even a foot up to the big man upstairs, you need to dance and lip-sync your way through Self-Service: A Resurrection Story alongside fellow religious big guns Mariah, Beyoncé and even Cher herself.” Tickets cost £11. Solidarity and hope at The Red Shed Comedy
Phil Hewitt
Group Arts Editor phil.hewitt@jpress.co.uk
The Red Shed offers the third part of campaigning comic Mark Thomas’ theatrical trilogy, which began with the multi award-winning, critically-acclaimed Bravo Figaro and Cuckooed. The conclusion is another nationwide tour this autumn as Mark returns to the place where it all began – the Red Shed, a labour club in Wakefield – to celebrate the club’s 50th birthday. Mark plays The Old Market, Hove (01273 201 800), on Tuesday, November 8, and St Mary in the Castle, Hastings (01424 715880), on Wednesday, November 9. As Mark explains, The Shed, home to Mark’s first public performances, is also a home to dissent, to organising and to progressive politics, and it was here that Mark’s true political prowess began.
An iconic and vital place for its patrons, this is where the true meaning of solidarity is found and where you can be part of history and part of the struggle. Mark describes himself as a south London lad, born to a Thatcherite world of selfemployed builders, labourers and tradesman like his father where the individual was key. Wakefield’s alien traditional labour community awoke a new determination in Mark and changed his life forever. Interviewing old friends and comrades, Mark pieces together the club’s history and works alongside it to campaign with some of the poorest workers in the country. It is the story of the battle for hope and the survival of a community, Mark explains. And it is just right for what Mark terms the “post-factual world” – a reference to Michael Gove’s announcement that we don’t need experts.
“It’s a world where we just want our views confirmed. It doesn’t matter if it is fact or fiction.” Except Mark takes the view that it does matter. It really matters where we are going next, just as it matters where we came from. “This is the story about why it is important to have factual stories, why it is important to have truth in our narratives.” Which brings Mark on to a conversation he was just having with his 22-year-old son: “He said to me ‘The more I think about it, the more I think all this [rubbish] started with Thatcher.’ I thought ‘My work is done!’ The whole question of unionism, solidarity and collective aspiration was shattered with Thatcher. “This show is about history. It is also about personal history, about me and my mates that I got to know through the miners’ stories through the miners’ strike.” On the last day of the strike, Mark marched back
‘This is one concert you don’t want to arrive late for’ Music
The second concert of the Brighton Philharmonic’s season at Brighton Dome takes place on Sunday, November 6 (2.45pm). The orchestra will be joined by regular collaborators Brighton Festival Chorus, conducted by James Morgan, with guest soloists Sarah Tynan (soprano) and Leigh Melrose (baritone). They are set to perform two choral/orchestral works by Brahms – his longest choral work ‘Ein Deutches Requiem’ (A German Requiem) and by way of contrast, his shortest ‘Schicksalslied’ (Song of Destiny). Conductor James Morgan (BFC’s music director) is looking forward to the concert and has a warning for audience members: “I’m delighted that the Festival Chorus and BPO will once again join forces in such a special programme. ‘Schicksalslied’ is a miniature masterpiece; this is one concert you don’t want to arrive late for, as the first minute of music is particularly sublime. “Then there is the ‘Requiem’ – such a well-
Conductor James Morgan
loved piece and a key work of the choral repertoire. We are very much looking forward to it and to welcoming our soloists Sarah Tynan and Leigh Melrose.” Catherine Stead, general administrator, added: “The concert opens with ‘Schicksalslied’, which is considered one of Brahms’ finest choral works; it took him three years to compose and is based on a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin about man’s sense of alienation within the cosmos. “The seven movements of Brahms’ epic German Requiem were written between 1865 and 1868 following the death of his mother, and in writing them
Brahms was also highly influenced by the earlier death of his great friend Robert Schumann following a suicide attempt and incarceration in a mental asylum. “The Requiem is based on words from the German Lutheran Bible rather than the more usual Latin text, which Brahms put together himself, wanting it to be a Requiem for the living, not the dead. The central message appears in its first lines: ‘Selig sind, die da Leid tragen, denn sie sollen getröstet werden’ (‘Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted’), taken from the Beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount. Selig ‘Blessed’ is also the last word we hear in the final movement. “The Requiem’s first performance in 1868, with Brahms himself conducting, was a huge success and marked a turning point in his career, giving him the confidence to complete many unfinished projects that had tantalised him for years.” Tickets from Brighton Dome ticket office in person, by telephone on 01273 709709 and online at www. brightondome.org.
with the miners. They passed a primary school in which all the children were singing of solidarity. “In the show I try to find them. All of them are fantastic examples of how you defy your circumstances…” ALSO AT THE OLD MARKET

Dracula’s tale in Preston Manor Theatre
Dracula at Preston Manor Review by Bex Bastable
If you’re going to see a performance of Dracula on Hallowe’en evening, what better place to do it than Preston Manor, reportedly one of the most haunted houses in Britain. Brief Hiatus, a Brighton theatre company, has staged a walk-through performance of Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the story, and to see parts of Preston Manor that are usually cloaked in a veil of mystery. When my partner and I arrived at the 13th century manor house, we weren’t sure what to expect from the show. We walked in to almostdarkness to set the scene for the night ahead, and were each
given a ticket: Exeter, Whitby or London. This signified your group for the evening, as the audience was split into three. Throughout the show the three groups were led to different parts of the house to experience different parts of the story, before being brought back together for the big dramatic acts. Although it sounds chaotic, it actually worked really well and the actors managed to maintain the fluidity of the story. The actors and actresses who ferried us around maintained their characters throughout – one stern lady in particular chastised the audience, sniping ‘do hurry up!’. The Victorian costumes reflected the period of the story, but there was enough neck flesh for the main protagonist, who never appeared to the audience. Count Dracula remained the
Omega
translucent, shadowy figure we know from the book. Knowledge of the original text helped to piece the story together; knowing your Van Helsings from your Harkers made it easier to understand what was going on initially, but as the performance went on, the story started to stitch together nicely. Highlights were the Brides of Dracula, who were frighteningly hysterical, and our trip outside to the grounds of Preston Manor, where our vampire hunters were searching for the monster. A must-see show, for the fantastic venue and the outstanding acting. There will be further performances on November 4 to 6, and November 11 at 7.30pm and 9.15pm. Tickets are £18. ast week I wrote about a trip to a new chain pizza restaurant at the Marina. This week I will be writing about a pizzeria in Hove. Some of you may feel that these two reviews are about the same thing, and perhaps they are on a very basic level, but they are in fact vastly different. This difference is what separates food designed for convenience from food created from passion and pride in its culture and history. Fatto a Mano appeared in Brighton around a year ago. Their first restaurant in the up and coming London Road area immediately got the city talking about pizza. It is not because the existing restaurants were doing a bad job, although that depends on your point of view, it was mostly because Fatto a Mano were doing it better and with more authenticity. The pizza was never intended to be an expensive dish. The simple marinara was created as food for Italian fishermen working out of the bay of Naples and utilised simple ingredients combined with enough carbs to fuel them for the day. Over the years these simple and honest principles got lost, and before you knew it a simple margherita pizza was costing around £10 for a fairly substandard offering. Fatto a Mano brought traditional pizzas and traditional pricing to Brighton. This was not ground breaking and they weren’t the first to do it, but they did it well. Following the success of the initial restaurant, which saw them place in the top 20 Brighton restaurants, Fatto a Mano have opened a second branch in Hove. This move sees them taking on a larger premises in a very different area of the city in terms of demographic. I was invited along to give

them a try in their new home along with a number of other local foodies and writers. The new Fatto cuts an impressive image from the outside, occupying a large corner building near Palmeira Square. With a delightful outside area which was well used during the summer months it looks every bit the part for its locale. Inside the classy marble bar and tiled pizza oven are reminiscent of the first restaurant and give a pleasant feeling of familiarity. The menu is along the same lines as the original with a daily specials board adding some variety. I opt for the traditional Caprese salad (£6.50) to start followed by a calzone carne (£9) as the main event. I take a seat at the counter giving me the change to see the chefs at work; it also means I can also have a nose at everyone else’s choices, something that people like me enjoy a little too much. Fatto a Mano is always a lively and vibrant restaurant experience. The staff constantly zip about taking orders and collecting dishes fresh from the oven as tables swiftly come and go. This
lively atmosphere adds to the whole experience and is not as oppressive as it could feel in other venues. The food is quick, as it should be, and I receive my starter after a short wait. It is an interesting take on the dish whereby a whole mozzarella ball tops chopped tomatoes with basil and olive oil. The classic flavours cannot be argued with and the dish is a light and fresh start to the meal. On the night of my visit they are also serving up some tronchetto with Brighton blue cheese that looks fantastic and I feel a little envious of. I sip my beer and watch the chefs creating different pizzas and dishes with the highly pliable dough. The whole process is quite mesmerising and I also get to spot my calzone being made and watch eagerly as it is shovelled into the oven. Having open kitchens and allowing patrons to see chefs at work is a modern trend that the pizzeria did first, and still does the best job of as far as I am concerned. My calzone, a folded and filled pizza, arrives and I cannot wait to get stuck in. Often with pizza the crust gets left but this is not the case here, lucky for me I already have curly hair. The soft pillow like dough is delicious on its own and once combined with the beautiful cheese and meat toppings it becomes a thing of joy. A great pizza is a simple thing that puts a smile on your face and this is what I get at Fatto a Mano. I end my meal with a traditional affogato with a grappa on the side for an added kick. It’s a great way to finish a meal ticking the coffee, dessert and digestivo boxes all in one go. With a full belly and a spring in my step, probably from the grappa, I step out into the Hove evening feeling well fed and ready to face the rest of the evening. he Culinary Heritage of Switzerland is a private association based in – let’s say it together – Switzerland. It was founded in 2003 and its aim was to create and collate (I made that up but they should use it; it’s more catchy than how they say it, and not just because they’re Swiss) articles about items that are traditional and unique to Switzerland. It’s just food stuffs though, so forget their banks, watches, army knives and neutrality. The rules are simple – the product must be Swiss, it must have been in production for a minimum of forty years, it must still be in production today (or at least in 2008 when they published their findings), it can’t be a recipe, or a wine, or unprocessed, or, actually, the rules aren’t all that simple. A team of historians, researchers, and ethnologists wrote articles and conducted interviews with bakers, butchers, archivists, and farmers’ wives (not sure why not the actual farmers – never been a fan of feminism. Or farmers.) The encyclopedic collection was finished and published in 2008. It was immediately made available. I haven’t seen it because I’m not Swiss. Or overly interested. Anyway, I’m too busy with Nicholas Ostler’s Ad Infinitum: A Biography of Latin. Then it’ll be anything other than The Culinary Heritage of Switzerland’s barbiturate. I am, however, aware of an entry within said soporific opus – carrot cake. Yes, I too thought it was American. It’s not. It’s Swiss. Carrot cake is a medieval thing. Sweeteners were super expensive and rare, and carrots are the sweetest of all the vegetables. As in they contain the most sugar (apart from sugar beet, but that’s cheating). A recipe for carrot cake appears in an 1827 French cookbook, published in England. I’m not sure if anyone’s told the Swiss. Rationing in Great Britain after WWII created a demand for cake-sweeteners, and an American called George C.Page hired bakers to devise uses for all the tins of carrot left over in America after the war - carrot cake was everyone’s solution. You could say it was their final solution. But you probably shouldn’t. Best to play it safe, try not to offend, and not commit to a firm opinion on anything. Isn’t that right, Switzerland?

Relocating for work If your job is taking you to a new part of the country, you need to think like a professional
I
t is acknowledged that moving house is one of the most stressful times in our lives, but when the move is because of a job relocation and involves a whole new area of the country, the stress can be compounded. Ifyouaretakingupanewpositioninthesamecompany, you may be offered the services of a relocation agent. A specialist in the field of moving households – sometimes across the globe – they will be able to take care of findingahomeintherightlocation, scouting local schools and even will help withpacking and unpacking your worldly goods. Arelocation service can be a wise investment for those moving independently too. For a fee they can guide you through every step, from finding temporary accommodation, and offer everything from area orientationtourstosettinguputility accounts and tracking your removal van.

While top executives are fortunate enough to be able to leave it to the professionals, those on a more limited budget can learn from their experience and become their own relocation experts. The key is preparation, according to Barbara Storr of Relocations UK. “Often our clients don’t have a great deal of notice in moving but the more time you have to research the new area the better. The internet should provide a great deal of information but visiting the new area is crucial and you should plan to do this several timesintheleaduptothemove, if at all possible.” She says renting a property for a few months can be a
t's time to be brave and unleash your wild side, and let lions, tigers and even bears loose in your home. Designers have gone 'on safari' for inspiration and the big beasts of the jungle are now stalking through decor (and you'll just look tame if you ignore them). Animal printdesigns, particularlyleopard prints, rule, and those stag heads arestartingtogivewaytonewstyle 'trophies', from lions to rhinos and zebras. "This is all part of a desire for maximalism in decor, and the animal trend is all about going over the top and demonstrating personality," says Jenny Hurren, founder of Out There Interiors, whose collection includes a neon

good idea, particularly if you are unfamiliar with a new city. “Deciding if you like a particular suburb is a difficult decision to come to from a flying visit.” House prices obviously vary greatly in different parts of the country. Storr says: “For those moving to London from the North, for example, it can be a bit of a shock when you realise how little you can afford but signing up with multiple estate agents gives a better understanding of where you want to be. “In addition, most estate agents will be happy to provide a one-on-one free service, offering the benefit of their local knowledge and accompanying you round a range of properties to give a good idea of what is in your price range.” Subscribing to local newspapers in the area you are moving to beforehand is a good idea too. Not only should the property section give you a feel for

"Whether it's exotic, wild animals or perhaps something more familiar, such as foxes and deer, animal interiors are a fun, bold statement and, aswithfashion,it's perfectly possible to be chic and stylish with it." If you're exploring the style be prepared to mix species, says Hurren, as clashing patterns and colour ways will create interest. what is available, but you can also keep an eye out for crime statistics, planning applications or council problems which could influence your choice. Travel times to and from both work and schools are a key consideration. Storr says: “There is no point moving to be closer to work if you still find yourself stuck in rush hour trafficforlargepartsoftheday.” Research the frequency and cost of public transport as well asimportantfactorssuchasthe price and availability of parking at stations close to your new home. Moving the whole family is much more difficult than relocating as a singleton, with a spouse’s job, mismatched school holidays or curriculums and even settling in pets in a new area all important considerations. Storr says: “If it is too much to do this all at once, it is sometimes easier to cope with one
aspect at once. While you may end up commuting weekly and stayingintemporaryaccommo-
dation for a while, it can be easier than attempting a wholesale move in one go.”

INSTITUTIONAL STUDENT ACCOMMODATION AWARD SCRAPPED
Article from ‘Property Industry Eye’ 2nd November.
A category in an inaugural awards scheme for providers of student accommodation has been scrapped by the magazine Property Week after its panel of judges – students – refused to make an award. The judges criticised institutional providers of student accommodation such as private halls of residence for charging far too much, providing the wrong sort of accommodation, and putting their shareholders first. They said they did not want to award a single one of the entrants. The Student Accommodation Awards, organised by Property Week and aimed at institutional providers rather than traditional student landlords, had a “Student Experience” category. The affair raises the whole question of ‘build to rent’ investment in the private rented sector, which is being heavily Government-backed at the expense of traditional private landlords. The judges wrote to the organisers of the awards event, as follows: “Dear Property Week, We appreciate the opportunity given to us, as students, to judge the Student Experience category for the upcoming Student Accommodation Awards. However, we regret to inform you that the panel could not come to a decision to award any of the entrants. Unfortunately, none of the entrants could demonstrate that they are meeting the urgent need of students to live in accommodation that will not force them into poverty. Most entrants price their cheapest rooms above the national average of £146 per week, and certainly above a level which student maintenance loans will reasonably cover. Many charge rents of more than £300 per week. One entrant is reported for having put disabled students at great risk of danger. Another charges hundreds of pounds to act as guarantor, profiting from the discrimination of migrants and the inability of poor estranged students to provide a guarantor. Another, in their application, puts shareholder satisfaction before student satisfaction and boasts of “£20m revenues”. Students are not seeking luxury getaways or cinemas in our living rooms. We are not ‘satisfied’ knowing our student debt is lining the pockets of millionaire shareholders. High rents are driving the social cleansing of education. Working class students are being priced out: unable to access higher education altogether, or forced to work long hours, disadvantaging the poorest. We urge all providers to invest in affordable accommodation so that the future of higher education is open to all, regardless of parental income. We urge all universities to cease the privatisation of accommodation, and to provide a guarantor service. We urge the sector to lower profits, reduce rents and support the call for greater financial support for students in the form of universal living grants. Unless all students have access to safe, affordable accommodation at every institution and the means to pay for it, t here is no cause for celebration, nor the ability for us to award a for-profit sector failing so many of our peers. Yours Sincerely Student Accommodation Awards Student Judges 2016” You can read the whole article, including a Bristol private landlord’s comments, very interesting and relevant, here: http://bit.ly/StudentPropertyAwards What does Brighton think? Car auctioneers appeal for unwanted vehicles
Shoreham Vehicle Auctions is calling on all south coast used vehicle sellers in the motor trade and consumer market to donate any unwanted vehicles and part-exchanges to its auction for Chestnut Tree House on Monday 21st November.
Now in its sixth year, the Lancing-based auctioneers is looking for all cars, regardless of age, shape, size, with or without an MOT, from dealers acrossSussex,Hampshireand Surrey to raise funds for the Arundel-basedchildren’shospice. Theonlyhospiceofitskind
in East and West Sussex and SouthEastHampshire,Chestnut Tree House cares for 300 children and young adults with progressive life-limiting conditions. Offering support to their families, this includes psychological and bereavement support, end of life and short break care and sibling support. Because annual service charges exceed £3m, yet familiesareneverchargedforcare, the hospice relies heavily on donations, which will also be usedtofundcommunitynurses in the local and surrounding areas, allowing children to receive around-the-clock

care in the comfort of their own home. The generosity of the motor trade at last year’s auc-
tion was overwhelming with £13,700 raised thanks to the support of local dealer groups and buyers enabling total do-
nations from the auction to reach £37,000 since Shoreham started supporting the hospice in 2011. One dealership donated a vehicle worth £400 that was bought for £1,000 at auction, subsequently donating the proceeds from the sale of that vehicle back into the auction. Alongside this, Shoreham waived all fees for each vehicle donated and pledged an additional £200 for each vehicle sold, which will continue at this year’s event to try and reach the £20,000 target. It is also encouraging miscellaneous items to be donated once again, with track days, gift experiences and sporting
memorabiliaquicklysnapped up last year. Alex Wright, managing director of Shoreham, said: “We are honoured to be supporting Chestnut Tree House once again with our charity auction. “The work they carry out is invaluable in supporting children, young people and their families when they need it most. “After the huge success of last year’s event, we want to push on and maximise donations for this wonderful and noble cause; this is only possible through private and trade outlets donating whatever they can.”

MOTORING/ROAD TEST
MX-5 2.0I SPORT NAV
Perfect for:
Leader of the pack
Motoring enthusiasts who want a true icon that offers a pure driving experience
Quarter of a century after it first appeared, the MX-5 is still a star, writes Steve Teale
ALTERNATIVES
Mazda was alone in thinking back in 1989 that what the motoring world needed was a two-seater sports coupe. All the memorable versions – the MGs, Triumph TR7s and co had come and gone – so what on earth was Mazda thinking of? Well, they were right. The MX-5 is now in its 26th year and is doing very nicely. In fact,it’sclaimedtobethebestselling sports car of all time. It’s not alone now. Its success has prompted rival manufacturers to return to the sports coupe market and it now has a flurry of rivals. So, how does today’s MX5 measure up? Well, pretty well. In a world where even ordinary cars are sometimes described as iconic, the MX-5 really is special.
I remember the first cars in 1989 being small and basic. Today’s version is still compact but it has a much more upmarket feel to the cabin. Yet on the open road, it is still a wind-in-the-hair sports car with a fantastic engine and wonderfulrideandhandling. Itisfirm, butstillcomfortable. In fact, true sports fans might prefer it to be a little sharper. MX-5 still wins awards including 2016 World Car of the Year, UK Car of the Year and Japanese Car of the Year. Not bad for a humble coupe. The new MX-5 is still a lightweight model and it is shorter, lowerandwiderthan the car it replaced. The centre of gravity is incrediblylow, whichgivesitgokart handling.

The MX-5 is a broad range, spanning SE, SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport and Sport Nav. It comes with a choice of two SKYACTIV-G petrol engines – 1.5-litre 129bhp and 2.0-litre 158bhp. Tested here is the 2.0-litre unit which is both quick and economical and is a perfect unit for such a well-balanced car. Acrosstherangeitfeatures alloy wheels, LED headlights, a leather steering wheel, plus a lightweight fabric hood whichisveryoldschool–simply open the clips and it folds back by hand in seconds. SE-L models add LED
daytime running lights, climate control air-conditioning, DAB radio, Bluetooth and cruise control, plus Mazda’s MZD-Connect connectivity andinfotainmentsystemwith colour touch-screen display andMultimediaCommander. SE-L models with the 2.0-litre engine are distinguished by 17-inch Gunmetal alloy wheels and piano black door mirrors, and benefit from a strut tower bar and limited slip differential. Step up to Sport trim and both the 1.5 and 2.0-litre cars feature rain sensing wipers, rear parking sensors, smart
keyless entry, Premium Bose surround-sound and heated leather seats. The MX-5 is an easy car to love. And provided you are agile enough to squeeze into the tight cabin, it is a vehicle which is bound to put a smile on your face. With a 130-litre boot and plenty of oddment strorage, it is an easy car to live with, too. l Mazda will launch the MX-5 Retractable Fastback (RF) in March 2017. Priced from £22,195 to £28,995 it will be an addition to the MX-5 range with a retractable hard-top.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton wants his side to build on the momentum from last weekend’s demolition of Norwich City. Glenn Murray’s hat-trick, coupled with efforts from Lewis Dunk and Anthony Knockaert, helped Albion cruise to a 5-0 Championship home success. With many tipping the Canaries to be challenging for promotion this season, it was a real statement from Brighton but Hughton feels it will count for nothing should their nine-game unbeaten run end at Bristol City tomorrow. He said: “We made sure that come Monday morning, back in for training, all our concentrations were on the upcoming game. “You have to go about your work with respect for every opposition because Saturday at Bristol City will be every bit as hard as a home game against Norwich. We’re very
focused on the next one and you have to be.” Brighton are back in front of the Sky cameras, with Saturday’s Ashton Gate clash getting under way at 5.30pm. Bristol City have been a surprise package for many so far this season and currently sit sixth. However, Hughton has not been shocked and is expecting another tricky test. He added: “I think you are never surprised by anyone in this division that starts well or has a good period. You could say the same with Huddersfield, there were signs with them last season. “Bristol have got a very good young manager in Lee Johnson and I think he has got his team playing in a way that allows them to win football matches.” Albion have the best defensive record in the Championship, having conceded just nine goals in 15 league matches, keeping ten clean sheets. Onceagain,SollyMarchwill be in Brighton’s provisional squad as he hopes to make a return to first-team action.

Whitehawk FC
Whitehawk Football Club are in FA Cup action tomorrow when they entertain Northern League Premier Division outfit Stourbridge in the first round. Despite the added hype surrounding the oldest cup competition in England, Whitehawk boss Richard Hill views it as another game he and his team must win. He said: “A lot of teams at this level place extra emphasis on the FA Cup but for me it is another game of football I want to win. “I’ve come to this club to win games of football and it is about making sure we do that on Saturday.” Many will make Hawks favourites to reach round two for the second successive season, however Hill is wary of the threat Stourbridge will pose. He added: “Everyone looks at us playing in a league above and thinks we will just go through. I know that Gary Hackett (Stourbridge manager) will have his team well organised and they’ll be wanting to win the game just as much as we do.” Whitehawk continued their excellent form with a 2-0 win over Margate in
Chris Assombalonga was on target against Welling on Saturday
National South on Saturday. Chris Assombalonga, his first goal since joining on loan, and a Chris Sessegnon own goal helped Whitehawk seal a fifth successive victory. The win moved Hawks up to 11th in the table and Hill was quick to praise his players. He said: “I think the players deserve a huge amount of credit. Some of those I’ve brought in were without a preseason, while some players that were here have been asked to play in a different way.” Tomorrow’s game kicks off at 3pm. Entry is £12 adults, £7 concessions and free for under-12s. LEWIS MASON
Five-star Albion look to continue unbeaten run Bristol City v Albion preview
Brighton Dolphins have again been crowned champions of the South Downs Leisure Walking Football League. Teams from across Sussex competed in the league and Dolphins proved just too strong in the final stages to win the title for a second successive season. The sport is growing in popularity and the next tournament is on Monday, with the next league season beginning on January 9. Visit www.southdownsleisure.co.uk for more details.
In-form Hawks eye FA Cup second round
After a stellar performance at the Amex last weekend, Brighton will be hoping to take their momentum into the next international break when they travel to face play-off hopefuls Bristol City tomorrow afternoon. In what was expected to be a tight contest, Chris Hughton’s side blew away promotion rivals Norwich 5-0, making the most of blunders from their opponents to run rampant in the second half. Glenn Murray put the Seagulls ahead six minutes
after kick-off and found the back of the net twice after the interval for his hat-trick, with Lewis Dunk and Anthony Knockaert also finding the back of the net in the second half. Having extended the gap between themselves and the play-off pack to three points, second-placed Albion will be hoping to maintain that advantage as they head to Ashton Gate looking to go ten games unbeaten against a sixth-placed Bristol City side who will look to cause problems for Hughton and Co. The Robins finished 18th
in their first season back in the second tier last season, howeverthearrivalofadozen new players in the summer has seen them competing at the other end of the table so far this season. Having sold star striker Jonathan Kodjia to Aston Villa in the summer, Lee Johnson’s side had already signed a ready-made replacement in the form of Tammy Abraham. The 19year old has scored 12 goals in all competitions since joining on-loan from Chelsea, nine of those in the Championship. BRADLEY STRATTON @BradStrat

Awards evenings always a special occasion for all
A
s we head towards the end of the year, many of us will begin to look back, summarise and assess 2016. Whichever sport interests you, there will no doubt have been highlights and disappointments. For many, the Olympics in Rio this year will have provided wonderful memories and gut-wrenching frustration. This week there were mixed fortunes for our Sussex athletes as they discovered whether or not they would receive lottery funding. It will have been a relief for some, a blow for others. Of course, the lack of funding won’t deter many from their goals. Many of those athletes who participated in Brazil will be celebrated at the annual Sussex Sports Awards (see opposite) this year in Brighton. It is always a special occasion but this year we will have a chance to hear from and congratulate many of the top athletes in the county. However, it is also a chance to reward players and athletes, coaches and managers,
volunteers and administrators. These unsung heroes are vital to everyone involved in sport, no matter what the level. At BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey, we also celebrate our Community Heroes in all walks of life this month. It is a hugely humbling evening and a reminder of the crucial role played by individuals in the community. Do try to tune in on the evening of Monday, November 28. I’m sure there will be someone who you know or who affects the area where you live, work or play. It’s often difficult to herald winners on the night as everyone nominated deserves recognition but all their stories will be shared on the airwaves. You may well be inspired to nominate someone you know for next year! Follow all the action, home or away, on BBC Sussex Sport or Twitter: @BBCSussexSport or @johnnycburger To read more by Johnny Cantor, visit www. johnnycantor.com
