A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND HEADMASTER
THANK YOU FOR MAKING BGS A PRIORITY
We are proud to share with you our 2023 Impact of Giving Report. This report provides us with the opportunity to thank all those within our community who have chosen to support our philanthropic priorities during the year whilst demonstrating the impact of your giving.
Much of our focus during the year, in a philanthropic sense, was on our Beyond Tomorrow Campaign supporting our Centre for Science, Creativity and Entrepreneurship. However, there were also many other instances where the generosity of our community shone brightly.
We think particularly of the incredibly generous bequest Rodney Bunning (OB 1951) left to his School. Rodney’s legacy will ensure there will always be deserving boys attending BGS on the Rodney and Penelope Bunning Scholarship. The School is currently considering other ways we can recognise Rodney’s bequest and we look forward to updating you on this in our next Impact of Giving Report.
In May we held our 6th Annual Giving Day. This year we reached into our community for support of the new multi purpose seating area around the Crowther Oval. We were pleased that over 300 members of our community - Old Boys, past and current parents, staff and sponsorschose to support our Giving Day raising
over $275,000 for the project which was a humbling outcome. Over the past six years, our Giving Days have raised over $2M for our scholarship and building funds enabling the School to provide more scholarships and expedite necessary building projects. Our Giving Days have become very much entrenched into our annual philanthropic calendar and we thank our community for their ongoing support of these.
As we enter the final year of our Beyond Tomorrow campaign, we are delighted that $8M has been raised and pledged to date - but we are not quite there yet.
We encourage our community to support this exciting new chapter in our School’s history. Whether it be by ‘securing your place’ on the donor wall in the cafe of the new Centre or by making a gift directly to the campaign, all contributions make a difference for BGS boys today and well into the world beyond tomorrow. Please visit our campaign website by searching ‘Beyond Tomorrow Brighton Grammar’ to make your gift to the campaign.
We would like to make particular mention of retiring staff member Peter Toms OAM. Peter fulfilled many roles during his 58 years at BGS with his role as our Bequest Manager
being one of his most impactful. Peter leaves his management of our Bequest Program with 110 members of our Sequamur Society which is remarkable for a School of our size. To all our generous donors, a sincere thanks for your support during the year which truly demonstrates that our thriving culture of philanthropy is alive and well at BGS.

IMPACTING THE LIVES OF OUR BOYS
2023 was another remarkable year for BGS in so many ways. In particular, I think of the impact our growing culture of philanthropy continues to make at the School. Be it support of our building projects, scholarships, or service programs, or those within our community who give of their time to make our School a better place, philanthropy is alive and well at BGS.
A major focus of the Development Office during the year was securing advocacy and support for our Centre for Science, Creativity and Entrepreneurship.
This is the most ambitious building project in the School’s history, and accordingly the fundraising appeal supporting the project is also ambitious. Having said that, I am truly humbled by the generous members of our community who have already chosen to make our Beyond Tomorrow campaign their philanthropic priority.
At the time of writing, $8M has been gifted and pledged to the campaign which is simply wonderful - the most the School has ever raised for a single project in its history.
2024 is the final year of our campaign and many opportunities still exist to support the project at various levels. Your support does indeed make a significant difference to the pace at which we can provide our boys and staff with the best possible facilities well into the world beyond tomorrow.
Alongside our Beyond Tomorrow campaign we held our 6th Annual Giving Day supporting the building of tiered seating around the Crowther Oval. This year our focus changed somewhat as
we did not have any matchers. But that didn’t seem to matter as we were able to raise over $275,000 on the day - an incredible outcome. Our Annual Giving Days have very much become embedded into the culture of philanthropy we enjoy at BGS, and a sincere thank you to all the staff, Old Boys, current and past parents who support our Giving Day each year.
I am delighted to inform you that two further means tested scholarships have been established this year. Both scholarships, one with a creativity focus, are to be awarded to boys who would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend our fine School. We look forward to welcoming the inaugural recipients of these scholarships to BGS in 2025.
Our philanthropy also extends to supporting other worthwhile causes.
Thank you to the 330 women who attended our Pink Dinner this year which focused on raising funds for the Cabrini Hospital Wig Room, in memory of much loved BGS staff member Andrea Barlow. Over $16,688 was raised at the event which equates to the Wig Room being able to provide 80 wigs for women undergoing cancer treatment. A wonderful outcome.
Under the inspiring leadership of BGS staff member Anna Ladas, we provided the opportunity for our boys to become philanthropists themselves through their involvement in our service programs throughout the year. Women for Women in Africa, Connor’s Run,
Ute Full of Food and the Winter Sleep
Out are just some of the worthy causes our boys supported. Additionally, many of our boys participated in our Annual Appeal either by assisting with activities on the day or making small gifts themselves and encouraging family members to do the same.
So, it can be seen that philanthropy is alive and well at BGS. I would like to conclude my report with a heartfelt thank you to all those in our generous community who have made BGS their philanthropic priority. With your ongoing support, 2024 will be another strong year where, as a community, we will all see the significant impact philanthropy is making at BGS. Meliora Sequamur.
John Phillips Director of AdvancementCAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE
If you pass our building site on a regular basis, you will have noticed that our Centre for Science, Creativity and Entrepreneurship is taking shape very quickly indeed. Now that the form of the building is complete, 2024 will focus on the fit-out in readiness for our boys and staff to walk through the inspiring ‘learning lane’ for the first time at the start of the 2025 school year. Our state-of-the-art Centre for Science, Creativity and Entrepreneurship is a powerful expression of our commitment to the future success of our boys. The multi-level creative arts, science and design and technology learning spaces will provide a ground breaking creative environment for our boys to thrive.
Our Beyond Tomorrow capital campaign has been supporting the construction of this exciting new chapter in our history and through the quiet phase of the campaign we were able to raise close to $8M. This is a most pleasing outcome and one of which we should all be proud. During 2024, the last year of our Beyond Tomorrow campaign, all members of our community will have the opportunity to get behind the campaign. Whether your support comes via your generous contribution when paying your School fees, or by securing one of the 160 panels on our unique art installation (see page 10), there are so many ways our community can be part of it. Of course, if you would like to discuss making a personal gift to the campaign, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you again to our generous community who have supported our Beyond Tomorrow campaign to date. It is with your support that we are able to create this ground breaking facility ensuring that our boys are better prepared for the world beyond tomorrow.
John Phillips Director of AdvancementSECURE YOUR PLACE IN BRIGHTON GRAMMAR’S FUTURE
We invite you to secure your place in our Centre for Science, Creativity and Entrepreneurship by having your gift to the Beyond Tomorrow Campaign acknowledged by way of our unique art installation.
For gifts to the campaign of $2,500, $5,000 or $10,000 and above, donors will have the opportunity to secure one of three panel sizes according to gift size. The wall will serve as an impressive art installation, taking pride of place in the café area situated in the central hub of the building. In addition, the wall will also serve as a lasting reminder of the generosity of our community and ensure all gifts are inextricably linked with the many exciting learning opportunities planned within the walls of our amazing new centre.

BRIARS SCHOLARSHIP
In 2016 a very generous Old Boy and his wife established the Briars Scholarship - a means tested scholarship that is awarded to the son of a single parent. The scholarship covers tuition for entry into our Secondary School until the completion of Year 12.
The donors, who wish to remain anonymous, were motivated to establish this scholarship knowing that a BGS education would be out of reach for many single parents. The most recent recipient of the Briars Scholarship expresses his gratitude to the donors:

Dear Sir and Madam
I am eleven years old and I currently go to Sandringham Primary School in Year 6.
I recently found out that I was accepted for the Briars Scholarship at Brighton Grammar School. I was so excited and happy when I was told!! I feel very lucky to be starting Senior School at BGS next year and I wanted to thank you for giving me this amazing opportunity.
During Primary school, my favourite subjects have been Maths, Science and History. I love number challenges and designing new mechanical inventions. When I grow up I really want to be an Engineer. At BGS I would like to focus on differnt STEM subjects to help me learn more.
I am also really excited to do sport at BGS. I love community sport and I currently play competition basketball and football. I also play competition cricket and soccer. I can’t wait to make new friends and join the sport teams at BGS. Representing the school will make me very proud.
At home , I live with my mum and my sister. We are lucky because my family live close by. My mum and I always say that school has also been like a family to us. We have made amazing friends since I started in Prep and have shared so many experiences. I have learnt how important it is to be involved, to help lead and to support others.
I really look forward to being part of the BGS community and thank you again for supporting me and making this opportunity possible.
Yours sincerely

ANNUAL GIVING UPDATE
The Crowther Oval has started to see its next renovation with thanks to our generous BGS community. Our Annual Giving Day brought together 373 donors via our online Charidy platform, raising funds for our new and improved tiered seating area, at the Rosstrevor end of the Crowther.
Works have begun, and the procurement of the recognition pavers has been completed. This new space will serve the boys during their days at BGS, through curriculum sport, play, House activities and of course weekend APS celebrations. Thank you to those who supported the project on our Giving Day and to those who took up the chance to have their legacy cemented into the Crowther. We know the Crowther is a special place to so many of our past and present families and Old Boys, so we are proud to recognise your support for future years to come. We thank all our community for your immense support and look forward to inviting our supporters to the unveiling.

Why I give to BGS
Our Director of Music and Head of Choral, Jared Furtado is one of many current and past staff members who choose to support Brighton Grammar School’s philanthropic priorities.
Jared reflects on his motivation to join with others in supporting BGS boys.
“They say 13 is an unlucky number but coming to the end of my 13th year at Brighton Grammar, I’ve never felt luckier to be a part of this community.
Coming from outside Victoria, the BGS community has been a Melbourne family to me time and time again. My husband and I were both music scholarship students at our respective high schools in WA and Ballarat and, as a result, appreciate more than most the transformative impact scholarships make. Consequently, it is our desire to pay it forward so that others can benefit like we did from the generosity of others.
We chose to start donating to three initiatives at Brighton Grammar many years ago after witnessing the direct impact these programs had on BGS boys. The three programs that resonate with us are: Scholarships, First Nations Programs and Friends of Music’s instrument upgrades.
These programs have wide impact and provide opportunities to boys who would not necessarily be able to have access or afford them without the support of our community”.
We thank Jared and Adrian for their commitment to Brighton Grammar School and their unwavering support of our boys.
A FAREWELL AND WELCOME
In September, we farewelled Peter Toms OAM after 58 years of dedicated service.
Peter’s connection to the School dates back to 1964 when he first joined BGS as a teacher before taking on the role of Master of the Junior School from 1987 to 2008. Since then, Peter’s impact as a key member of the Development Office team has continued to be significant.
As the Bequest Manager, Peter developed relationships within our community and sought support and advocacy of the School’s plans for the future. Peter leaves BGS having established a strong base of 110 members within our Sequamur Society.
In recognition of his extraordinary service to BGS, a bust of Peter has been commissioned, to be placed in the Secondary School Quadrangle; only the third time in our history that a staff member has been honoured in this way.
It’s with pleasure we announce Peter’s successor, Nickie Warton. Nickie previously held the position of Head of Philanthropy at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and certainly brings with her a wealth of experience as we continue to strengthen the culture of philanthropy at our School. Nickie looks forward to meeting many in our community as she settles into her new role as Sequamur Society Manager.
TRANSFORMATIONAL GIVING
of the late Rodney Bunning (OB 1951).
A much-admired BGS community member, Rodney is remembered for his gentle, charming and selfless nature and together with his beloved wife Penelope, has established the Rodney and Penelope Bunning Scholarship through a bequest to the School.
Growing up in war-time Melbourne, Rodney knew what it was like to experience hard times and to accept duty. As the eldest of the Bunning siblings, and with his father away in New Guinea, he took on the role of family carer at the tender age of 8. This responsibility had a significant impact on young Rodney, and with little income being received by the
Bunnings during those war years, his family was not able to afford his School fees at Brighton Grammar.
A creative student, Rodney was invited to apply for a St Andrew’s Choir Scholarship which he successfully received in 1947. In the days when Chapel service was daily for students and choir boys performed at St Andrew’s weddings, funerals and ceremonial services, Rodney’s involvement in the church and School was formidable. His fondest memories associated with his school days included moments of hard work, gratitude and the realisation that someone believed in him enough to support his future through a scholarship. In 1951, as teenagers, Rodney met Penelope [nee Dennett] at the Cole Street Beach. A true Brighton story,
Rodney Bunningboth were born at the Brighton Community Hospital, attended local schools and after years of courting, they were married at St Andrew’s Church Brighton. Together they had incredible energy and passion for adventure, embarking on many memorable journeys including sailing through the Mediterranean, boarding the Orient Express, scaling the Himalayas, and traversing the original Qantas Kangaroo Route on a 25-day air journey.
A man of many talents, Rodney trained as a commercial artist and had jobs in advertising agencies and live TV, including the popular ‘In Melbourne Tonight’ show and was also featured as Australia’s very own Marlboro Man. He was a skilled yachtsman, winning many trophies in local regattas and in the years following Rodney and Penelope would build homes, a winery and Division 2 boats. Both were passionately involved in volunteer services, including Coast Guard and Meals on Wheels until Rodney’s health deteriorated and he passed in 2022 at the age of 89.
Reflecting on his life, Rodney wanted to give more young people the opportunity to experience a life-changing education at Brighton Grammar, just as he experienced in his youth as a scholarship student. Through Rodney’s bequest we are reminded of the immense power
of generosity and how a single act of kindness can inspire and support the next generation of BGS students.
Brighton Grammar is proud to have held a special place in Rodney’s heart and it is therefore a fitting tribute that we celebrate his life and legacy.
Rodney’s story - and the school he lovedlives on.

2024 AND BEYOND
Brighton Grammar School’s philanthropic priorities focus on two main goals that support the School’s commitment to provide an outstanding education for boys. 2
To develop teaching and learning facilities that support our commitment to provide BGS boys with a worldclass 21st century education.
To continue to build the corpus of our Endowment Fund, ensuring the School’s long-term financial stability.
All gifts, no matter the size, collectively make a huge impact on the lives of current and future generations of BGS boys.
If you would like to make a tax-deductible gift to either the BGS Building Fund, BGS Library Fund or the BGS Scholarship Fund, please contact John Phillips, Director of Advancement:
(03) 8591 2280 or email jphillips@brightongrammar.vic.edu.au
Thank you to our community for supporting Brighton Grammar School.
