The Kooks return with new music

Former Brighton residents The Kooks have released two new songs, ‘No Pressure’ and ‘All The Time’, alongside details of their fifth studio album, Let’s Go Sunshine, to be released 31st August. Discussing the album’s creation, lead singer Luke Pritchard says, “This one was about defining who we are. I really went on a mission to write the best songs I’d ever written before. I stewed over every word. It had to be our Rubber Soul, Lola, Definitely Maybe. Proper British lineage.”

COMING SOON ON RADIO

Don Broco’s third album Technology signalled a huge leap forward for the band, with one eye seemingly on big stadium rock territory. We chat to the group before their performance at Download Festival in June.

Seemingly on permanent hiatus since 2007, Hell Is For Heroes have returned for a massive show at Download and appear in Brighton the night before. We’ll be talking to them in preparation for a thundering show at Concorde 2.

DON’T MISS: PICK OF THE WEEK

Jack White is officially coming to Brighton as part of a UK tour, at the Brighton Centre, 16th October, in support of his latest album, Boarding House Reach. White recently banned phones at his gigs so don’t get caught out. London’s Ezra Collective have just released the stunning single ‘Mace Windu Riddim’, alongside news that the band have also announced a seven date 2018 UK headline tour, including Brighton’s Patterns, 14th November.

Kojey Radical

BY BRIGHTONSFINEST TEAM To paraphrase that Marmite film classic, the streets were alive with the sound of music! Over three long days and nights, Brighton came alive as The Great Escape rolled into town representing countries all around the globe. The festival for new music saw over 500 acts playing in 40 odd venues. Yes, it was mad, but glorious. Brightonsfinest were out in force, documenting, commenting, and watching live music. So, brace yourself. If you were there, hopefully memories will be stirred. While, if you weren’t, dive into our thoughts about the state of new music.

The Faim

THURSDAY After the nightmare of last year’s weather, wasn’t it beautiful to see the sun shining gloriously for all three days of The Great Escape this year? It certainly made queuing to get into venues all the more easier. The queues started early this year, too, with my first act, Cardiff’s Boy Azooga. One of the biggest buzz bands of the festival, for sure, but to see queues along both pavements outside Latest Music Bar was a surprise. Nevertheless, the swarms of people

8

BRIGHTONSFINEST.COM

who got there early were right: Boy Azooga are fantastic. Half art-rock and half a krautrock-influenced dynamo; the four-piece headed up by Davey Newington are a mightily impressive live set-up. Next-up was my first official taste of this year’s Beach venue with London two-piece Girlhood who, luckily, were made for the roaring sunshine with their late 90s hip-hop vibes. It seemed that all of the Australian acts were the ones to watch on Thursday, as The Faim then took over at Komedia, bringing a far more intense rock sound; vocalist Josh Raven is a performer like no other, throwing himself into the crowd and shifting his body in all kinds of bizarre fashions whilst not dropping a note. The final stop with the Australian groups was Haiku Hands, with their eclectic style, perfectly timed choreography and simple lack of adhering to norms making their sound truly unmistakable. Arguably one of, if not the, biggest set of Thursday

Ms Banks

came from former Brighton residents Dream Wife. I was very excited to see them, as were the swarms of people who crammed themselves into the Beach venue. They were simply phenomenal. After some fiery punk, it was time for some blazing beats from South London rapper Ms Banks over at The Fader’s East Wing stage. Her set was a triumph, showcasing her playful ability to fuse the worlds of UK hip-hop and r’n’b, as well as American trap influences.

FRIDAY Music starts early on the second day of The Great Escape and, by the time I arrived at The Richmond Pub for Strange Cages’ Deadbeat Disco Alt Escape All-Dayer, two acts had already performed. Underwater Boys were not long out of bed and took to the stage donning their pyjamas. A good look that suited the dreamy laid-back nature of their sound. Us early risers where treated to a frankly brilliant set by the five-piece, showing us that the Brighton band have far more than just the three great singles they already have online. An act on the festival bill that excited a lot of people was the young talents of Nilüfer Yanya, who played a captivating set at the Beach. The West London musician has carved out a unique sound for herself, using strains of soul, r’n’b, rock, and psychedelia to create a delicious guitar-driven concoction.

“The Great Escape really is a weekend not quite like any other.” Russia were the next country to tackle and Wet Red was the perfect act for the job. The group’s ‘Gaga-esque’ visuals and intensely punchy sound truly got the room moving and gave the day the first burst of extreme colour that it needed. As the queues for the beer tents in the beach area became longer and longer, Denzel Himself made for a terrific break to get out of the sun, capturing all gaze through his incredibly raw performance and pure madness as he bounds through the crowd in a fit of pure energy and rage, luckily not spilling anyone’s drinks. A far more tropical sound followed with Stereo Honey, whose colossal indie sound and exquisite vocals from Pete Restrick are truly a sight to behold. Great bands deserve a great venue, so I was delighted to see Superorganism were scheduled to play Friday evening at The Old Market. The crowd were ecstatic throughout the show and The Old Market was absolutely packed out, despite being one of the bigger venues on the bill.

Yellow Days

SATURDAY The Saturday this year was established as the championing of Brighton acts everywhere around the city, with the big hitters such as The Magic Gang and Demob Happy playing some of their biggest ever gigs. As the lack of sleep and two days of drinking began to catch up with me, Hero Fisher was the perfect way to start the last day of the festival. Performing a stripped back set at Queens Hotel, the crowd stood silently, listening to every last whisper of Fisher’s stunning vocals as they massaged the room. Next up were two of Brighton’s next big things, Thyla and FUR. Every time I see Thyla, who won the competition to open the Beach, they astound me: their propulsive postpunk sounds are remarkably huge and Millie Duthie’s voice has all the attributes to soundtrack many indie kid’s formative years in the future. Her’s have been stealing hearts for a couple of years now and their show at the St Mary’s Church for the Brightonsfinest Alternative Escape Showcase endeared them even more - despite my aching legs from all the walking and standing throughout the three days, you couldn’t help but bust a move to their addictive groove. I then ventured down to the Beach venue to catch one of Brighton’s favourites, Demob Happy. In celebratory mood, the three-piece blaze their way through a short but sweet set of highlights from their recent second album Holy Doom.

Haiku Hands

Tom Grennan

My final act of the weekend was new found sensation Tom Grennan. After receiving so much attention, there was a lot of expectation riding on this set, but there was no disappointment to be found. Tom’s style of performing is on an entirely new level: he spins, kicks and thrusts himself around the stage like a madman whilst bringing his husky and infectious riffs along, I could think of no better way to end the festival and, by the response from the crowd, neither could they! All in all, this year was an undoubted success. With so much to enjoy, it’s a shame you can’t make it to everything but, of all the acts seen, To read the full in-depth review visit Brightonsfinest.com/TGE18

ALBUM REVIEWS Father John Misty – God’s Favorite Customer Out: 1st June 2018

Before their brand-new record, Outsiders, it had been four years since The Magic Numbers had toured or released an album. On the evidence of the packed-out crowd at The Old Market, excitement was palpable for their return. Starting with ‘Shotgun Wedding’ and ‘Ride Against the Wind’, there’s a difference in the style and sound of the band instantly. People only aware of their older material might be a little lost, but this feels like a new era for the band and it’s certainly an impressive one. The most important thing here though is, over a decade into their careers, this excellent foursome still look like they enjoy playing together. This was one to treasure.

Amber Run returned to live action in a special show at Green Door Store celebrating their new EP, The Assembly. This was a perfect night to show their focus and potential remains undimmed and, potentially, heralds a whole new era for the band.

It really was a shame that the rain came that day and was so persistent because it was a really strong line-up at St Ann’s Well Gardens Spring Festival. Hopefuly they can attract the same quality of bands next year and the weather is much kinder to them.

Problem in Brighton was David Shrigley’s attempt to use one stringed and home-made guitars, to impart a message about problems: big or small, economic or social, trivial problems that only concern the individual and those of our own making.

Playing at Brighton Electric strips back a layer of stage magic but this is even more dazzling, like seeing Poly-Math at home. None of it feels like performance either: they come on and tear into it like it’s nothing, this is the space their album was made in after all.

In a surprisingly rapid follow-up to Pure Comedy, Josh Tillman has thrust out a record that’s arguably his most concise to date. Leaving the outward looking meta analysis behind, he moved into a hotel for six weeks to gaze deeply inward at his struggling marriage while binging on drink and drugs. The results are a wild ride, sure, but still melodic as hell.

Hailing from just along the Crayola Lectern – coast in Worthing, Crayola Happy Endings Lectern is the brainchild Out: 1st June 2018 of psychedelic family man Chris Anderson, backed by musical friends including a couple of ex-Cardiacs. His mastery of the keys has been further distilled in this weird and whimsical collection of songs, which lose nothing through being a little more focussed and succinct than on the debut. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks –W Sparkle Hard Out: 18th May 2018

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks are out there painting middle America as a world that’s weird and wonderful in a way we might have forgotten about. This is a fantastic album, with staying power, that could act as a great starting point for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the works of this idiosyncratic genius and his sympathetic band. Dive in – you wont regret it!

The queen of observational slacker rock has taken a much darker turn on her second record. This is essentially Courtney Barnett versus her enemies, including her own mental health, but with a beautiful look at how art can help you. Barnett’s vulnerability, and the strength to turn them on their head, has just created one of the finest records of the year.

Courtney Barnett – Tell Me How You Really Feel Out: 18th May 2018

Q&A

NILUFER YANYA With a place on the BBC Sound of 2018 poll to her name, a string of festivals and worldwide dates ahead of her, 22-yearold Nilufer Yanya is on the cusp of great things. She was in town for The Great Escape, so we caught up with her... What’s your musical background? I started writing when I was quite young, started playing guitar and then classical piano.

12 BRIGHTONSFINEST.COM

How would you describe what you do? I don’t think you can really say the right thing. Nobody likes to be put in a box. But we’ve got guitars happening, and an indie-rock vibe, and a bit of a soul vibe too. I like songs that have stories and situations that you can almost catch, but you can’t quite ever catch properly. It’s more a vibe… a feeling.

through art. We like art and people like art, so it’s a good way to get to know people, and show solidarity with displaced refugee people. We’ve been working in Athens at the squats and camps. They’re from all over, although last couple of years they’ve been mainly from Africa and Afghanistan. Although in the past month or so, it’s been mainly Syrians arriving, as we know. It’s taken a turn for the worse. I can’t go this time around, but went in March. That was our fifth workshop that we did. The others are going back at end of May.

Tell me about Artists in Transit, the organisation... It’s about showing solidarity
