PORTFOLIO PÉNI BRIGITTA FURNITURE & PRODUCT DESIGN BUDAPEST, HUNGARY MOME 2018.

My name is Brigitta PeĚ ni and I am a 24-year-old student of furniture design at MOME / Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest. I am currently in the final year of the MA. My interests and thus my education have always been closely linked with arts. I completed my college education at University of PĂŠcs and MOME Budapest. I studied ceramics, product design, stand and service design before specializing in furniture design. I have been to the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair twice, where I met the Scandinavian design first-hand. What raised my interest about the Scandinavian designers and companies were the timeless aesthetics and functionality, and the minimalistic approach. It was because of these experiences that I decided to study in Denmark (erasmus at KADK), and now I would like to develop my knowledge further with the help of this opportunity in your company. I would like to immerse more deeply in this profession and concentrate on the implementation of the projects. I work best in creative areas, that makes me motivated, ambitious and hard-working. My broad and multifaceted design education, my international orientation and open mindset make me ideal to work in an intercultural environment. I hope my achievements fit the company expectations. Please see my projects on the following pages.

ABOUT: A lounge chair that takes departure in the classical stick chair design. The aim was to create a low and cosy lounge chair for everyday use that has a wide seat, allowing comfortable and snuggly seating. The front leg combines the upper and lower parts, which gives liveliness and energy to the structure. During the planning process, I focused on functionality paired with durable form design and timeless aesthetics.

PROJECT: A classic design project where I had to consider a traditional technology and Scandinavian chair-type. In this case the focus was on the practice oriented towards designing and constructing. I had to prepare the chair on my own at the workshop of the university, so I had to observe all the details according to my opportunities of production. It was a very instructive, complex and motivating project for me, which deepen the respect and honor for manaul constructing in me.

MINOR kids’ sofa made: project: manufacturer: material.: dimensions: webSITE:

2017. Download Design Kids ERTL Furniture Kft. birch plywood, MDF board, sponge, textile 89 x 55 x 92 cm downloaddesign.hu exhibition: Construma Trade Exhibition, Home Design 2017. MOME consultants: István Juhász DLA, András Kerékgyártó, Rita Mária Halasi ABOUT: MINOR is a kids’ sofa offering a private space suitable to play, learn or relax on. It is a deep seating furniture compared to its dimensions allowing for free movement and diverse positions, while its high backrest and sides gives a cosy snugging experience. Its simple, agreeable character and cheerful, vivid colours can make it a favourite with children. Even two children can use it simultaneously, because snugging together is so much more exciting.

Project: The Download Design initiative launched three years ago give answers to the above phenomena using the sharing economy model. It addresses the general public and looks to make quality design furniture available for all. The needs and preferences of the 6-12 age group was in focus in 2017. Challenged to design furniture for three uses and locations: pieces for relaxing and playing in the leisure space; furniture to facilitate ways of learning in the study space; and flexible, multifunctional and modular storage systems.

Minor

gyerek szófa LEÍRÁS: MINOR egy gyerek szófa, egy játékra, pihenésre, tanulásra egyaránt alkalmas privát tér. Méreteihez képest mély beülésű bútor, teret enged a szabad mozgásnak, változatos pozíciók felvételének, miközben magas háttámlájának és oldalfalának köszönhetően a kuckózás élményét nyújtja. Egyszerű, kedves karaktere és vidám, élénk színei miatt a gyerekek kedvencévé válhat. Két gyermek együtt is használhatja, ez nem olyan tárgy, aminél gondot jelenthet a közösködés, mivel együtt kuckózni sokkal izgalmasabb.

56’s main station made: project: competition: consultant: photo: TEAM work:

2018. Architectural Concept Árkay ideas competition Marián Balázs own photo Dorottya Seenger, Marcell Szodfridt, Brigitta Péni

ABOUT: For the tender of the XII. district of Budapest, I had to reconsider the functionality of the tram 56’s main station. The building is a national monument in which currently a restaurant is operating, and the plot is serving as camping. Regarding to the low number of visitors, the local government would like to redefine the property and they were looking for new ideas for both summer and winter usage. Our goals were to find such a function and shaping for this project, that gives enough motivation for the visitors to look up this place, because the biggest problem is that it is an isolated area of the city which can be reached hardly by public transport. According to our plans, the place would serve in the winter season as an ice rink, due to its special location and shape which would perfectly match with this usage. It is a well-protected location which is in favor for cold weather, so without ultra-energy input the skating rink could work for a longer period of the year. The monument could keep its current restaurant function, but there would be significant interior changes. We imagined that the place could give home for different other sports in the summer and that more hiking trails could start from here.

2016. Download Design Baby Karrier Bútor Kft. birch plywood, braided rope, beech, rollers 44 x 28 x 29.5 cm Dániel Gáspár photo: Construma Trade Exhibition, Home Design 2016. exhibition: downloaddesign.hu website: MOME consultants: István Juhász DLA, András Kerékgyártó, Rita Mária Halasi ABOUT: The focus activities for my design were packing and moving toys, something toddlers are most enthusiastic to do. The cute storage boxes with their rollers easily become organic part of the games. Line them up to make a train, connect them differently to turn Bubák into a sideboard or night dresser. Recommended from 2 years of age. PROJECT: Hungary’s first open design driven furniture initiative, launched by MOME, and the complimentary manufacturing drawings for its 13 pieces of furniture have been downloaded from the downloaddesign.hu website. While in 2015 the theme was first independent homes, designers focused on the arrival of the first baby this year, and that is why the Project’s current title became Download Design Baby. 2016 saw the creation of 11 pieces of furniture intended for the baby room, specifically with the 0–3 age group in mind. Users can get their hands on free design drawings and manufacture their furniture at realistic prices within average joinery industry conditions in Hungary or even on a DIY-basis in their own workshops.

PLY DESIGN EXHIBITION BOOTH made: project: manufacturer: dimensions:

2017. exhibition booth for Ply Design Ltd. sg Art Project Bt. 5 x 4 m (base area) Gábor Nagy photo: Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair 2017. and 2018. exhibition: plydesign.eu website: MOME consultants: István Juhász DLA, assistant professor András Kerékgyártó, assistant lecturer

project: The exhibition booth is the result of one-semester long cooperation project between the product design department of the MOME and the Hungarian furniture label, Plydesign Itd. Plydesign brought their new collection of furniture and the university students threw in their fresh ideas for the stand to showcase them. The task for the participants was to design simple, good-looking and practical exhibition booth for the new series of stools and tables of the firm. The stringent brief included many aspect of the work: They have to develop solutions for the lighting, the communication and also the manufacturing. And even if it’s hard to believe, they were the ones who have build all this up with their own hands.

Let me introduce the team

3D PRINTED LAMP made: project: material.: dimensions: MOME consultants: photo: Exhibition:

2015. freely choosen theme plastic h: 25 cm István Keszei Dániel Gáspár Budapest 3D Printing Days, Design Week Budapest 2015.

ABOUT: The main point in my project for Varinex “What to print in 3D” competition was to design a structure that can only be made or worth to be made by 3D printing. I wished to create something dynamic with screwed shape and for an inspiration I took movements and rotations and I also studied gyroscope and kinetic sculptures. The braided look was created by rotating a basic shape. It consists of two layers, every “thread” is curvy and goes through each other, so the most effective way to manufacture it is with 3D printing.

BillO rocking baby furniture made: project: technology: dimensions:

2016. freely choosen theme for Ply Design Ltd. prototype, curved plywood technology 55 x 38 x 40 cm seat height: 32 cm photo: Nikolett Kustos MOME consultants: István Juhász DLA, assistant professor András Kerékgyártó, assistant lecturer

ABOUT: Billo is a see-saw children’s furniture, which is simple in the form and structure as well. It works like an ordinary rocking horse. Its simple appearance reminds to the scandinavian or villager furnitures. Focusing on the kids, the object is light and portable, the size based on the average size of the kids motors and the rocking horses. It was an important aspect that it’s easy to assemble - only one tool needed for it - and it ‘s stackable.

PROJECT: For the competition of the Ply Design Kft. the goal was to design a smaller size item or an article of personal use, that can be produced by the firms manufacturing technology. The Ply Design company is dealing with plywood furniture production, and they wanted to expand their supply with smaller products. The main viewpoint during the design was to create such an object that can be rationally produced.

waiting room armchair made: project: DIMENSIONS: MATERIALS: MOME consultants:

2016. Conceptual furniture 95x62x84 cm polyurethane, plywood, textile Berta Barna

CONCEPT: The conception of this waiting room seating was the result of an interesting designing experiment. The point of the project was, that we had to choose a certain song that had a furniture mentioned in its lyrics. The selected song was played for the experiment group, and each member had to write down their triggered feelings and impressions by the song. These keywords gave the base for the direction of my conception. My decision fell on the song with the title “Hallelujah”, and the key words belonging to it were: “infinity”; “lot”; “homogenous effect”; “gesture”; “crowd”. I considered the given words, and I imagined infinity comfortable furniture, that surrounds you with peace. This project was only fictive, and it was not implemented into reality, but it was an interesting and enlightening design work about how to shape after calls and emotions.

Technical drawing made: project: chair : dimensions:

2017. technical drawing practice J52 B Borge Mogensen M 1:1

ABOUT: Technical drawing about an optional chair, as a preliminary study for the designing of a similar type of chair. My selection fell on a Danish classical, the J52 B which is still under everyday production. What I have learnt from it: 1. Patience. Even the exercises which seem less thrilling at the first glance, can have challenges and excitement in its details. 2. It does not worth to skip the postproductions, because that shapes it into one piece and that is how it can become a whole and be enjoyable. 3. I realized that the measuring method what I was using during the drawing I can transfer it into the 3D application and I can also use it during the designing. 4. Reconsidering the standard sizes, ergonomical experiments that can be implemented into the own works.
