The studio will explore the supermarket typology as a bridge-building above Interstate 5 in Washington State connecting two rest stops situated on either side of the highway. The conceptual focus of the studio will be the d evelopment of an architectural object that is experienced at two very different speeds; one at 65 mph through the windshield, second at a walking pace from the parking lot. How does one negotiate the translation of such difference in perception? What are the architectural ramifications in embracing this difference as a strategy of design? How does an object come into focus? How does speed influence the resolution of articulation? How does its character shift on approach? How does it look in the rear-view mirror? Closer for sure, but perhaps stranger... In response to this brief, we decided to make big use of the close to 5 acre site located in Smokey Point while keeping in mind designing for different views from cars and pedestrians that approach the building at various directions and velocities. We are looking to explore the sense of elongation and transparency through the implementation of materials and precise modeling the structures edges.

WAVE project type_ Mixed-Use Housing studio critic_Eric Schonennberger site_SoHo, New York size_ 10,000 sq.ft The studio will explore the supermarket typology as a bridge-building above Interstate 5 in Washington State connecting two rest stops situat ed on either side of the highway. The conceptual focus of the studio will be the development of an architectural object that is experienced at two very different speeds; one at 65 mph through the windshield, second at a walking pace from the parking lot. How does one negotiate the trans lation of such difference in perception? What are the architectural rami fications in embracing this difference as a strategy of design? How does an object come into focus? How does speed influence the resolution of articulation? How does its character shift on approach? How does it look in the rear-view mirror? Closer for sure, but perhaps stranger... In response to this brief, we decided to make big use of the close to 5 acre site located in Smokey Point while keeping in mind designing for different views from cars and pedestrians that approach the building at various directions and velocities. We are looking to explore the sense of elongation and transparency through the implementation of materials and precise modeling the structures edges.
