Miss New Mexico 2019 Allie Gonzalez McAllen native finishes first runner-up at Miss USA 2019

McAllen native’s eight year journey

to the Miss USA stage places 1st runner up

When Miss New Mexico USA 2019 was asked what issue all presidential candidates should address, the McAllen native who finished first runner-up at Miss USA 2019 didn’t shy away from controversy.

cause she didn’t appreciate that part of herself. Competing in Miss USA pageants at the age of 20, she talks about transitioning into adulthood through pageantry, shedding her shortcomings over time.

“Being from a border state and being born and raised in a border city, immigration is something that is very important to me,” Alejandra Gonzalez, 26, said during her top-five answer at the Miss USA pageant earlier this month. “This is not a black and white issue (and) … we need to have discussions and continue to listen to each other.

“I feel like it’s a very fragile age where you’re still trying to find out who you are, what you want to do in life, what you believe in and what you stand for,” she said.

“I think there are so many people out there wanting the American Dream, and my parents immigrated here from Monterrey, México and I am their representation of their American Dream.” Gonzalez said she was thrown off by the crowd’s response and was proud to see the reaction on social media. “It’s really wonderful, and I see the power in that,” she said of people relating to her story and her voice. “I’m very honored to represent our community like that.” The pageant veteran competed in Miss Texas USA seven times, finishing as a non-finalist, finalist, fourth runner-up, third runner-up, second runner-up and first runner-up. While preparing for previous contests, Gonzalez admits she’d taken advice to stay away from polarizing topics, like her immigration answer, which resonated with so many. Growing up in the Rio Grande Valley, she recalled a time when she didn’t claim her bilingualism be-

Her improvement is based less on practicing for categories such as swimsuit, evening gown and interview, and more of a reflection of life experiences that have changed her perspective, she said. Those include escaping a toxic relationship at 21 that allowed her to learn her worth, earning her bachelor’s and master’s in accounting, and working on money laundering or Medicaid fraud cases, for example. “Those experiences, I feel, have molded me over the years, but it’s a growing path — a timeline of pure growth,” she said, speaking positively about coming up short at Miss Texas USA. “Of course no one likes to lose, but I’m happy that I had to lose all those times to finally be where I’m at. “This is such a subjective area of competition where you could literally do everything perfect and still might not be someone’s cup of tea.” Gonzalez said she stopped seeing the pageants as competitions against other women but as opportunities to be her best self — to hold herself to a goal she set. She said she was the most calm

she’s ever been during competition at Miss USA 2019, despite it being nationally televised. She attributes this Jedi-like composure to her own personal growth. “We mostly work on their confidence,” said Debi Chavez, the woman Gonzalez credits for getting her into pageantry, “because once you build their confidence, everything else falls into place.” Gonzalez remembers meeting Chavez in a Dillard’s dressing room at the mall when she was trying on dresses. Chavez immediately saw potential because “she was tall, beautiful and the way she carried herself,” she recalled. “I’ve told her since the day I met her that she has the Miss Universe look.” Gonzalez isn’t sad about losing, she said, though she gets the question a lot. Instead, she focuses on putting the Valley on the map for something positive, and taking the chance to highlight the hard work of her parents and other immigrants. “When I was able to fully accept myself and be proud of who I was — where I’m going and where I come from — that’s what truly won it for me,”she said, instead of answering what she thought judges wanted to hear. “Whenever I threw all of that out the window, it just changed everything for me.” So when Gonzalez spoke of her parents’ native city, she said she didn’t think about whether she would “say it with a Spanish (or) English accent.”

“I just said it,” she said. “I think that proved to me how comfortable (I am) with who I was, where I come from and my roots. “But I was so confident in the answer I gave for my top-five question that there was some kind of peace.” Chavez was present for the Miss USA pageant in Reno, Nevada, and she gushed about the fans’ affection for Gonzalez and her answers — how they waited for her to greet them after the show and how she was appreciative of their time. “To me, that’s priceless because not everybody is like that at that level,” she said of Gonzalez’ approachable presence. “It took years in the making, but she always had it. “We just had to finetune it.” Chavez repeated a sentiment she’d heard — that it’s more likely your child would make it in the NFL than on the stage of Miss USA. “To be first runner-up in the Super Bowl of pageants, Miss USA …, it’s a one-in-a-million shot,” she said. Gonzalez said young women who are interested in competing in pageants shouldn’t be discouraged if they’re not where they want to be yet, as long as they’re working at becoming better versions of themselves. “You have to be comfortable with yourself,” she said.

Catriona Gray’s makeup Makeup tutorial by Miss Montana USA 2018 Dani Walker

Want to recreate Catriona Gray’s Miss Universe makeup? Here’s the breakdown and products she used. I’ll add that I look nothing like Catriona Gray; recreating her Miss Universe Makeup Routine was different, to say the least. There’s a lot of products in this routine, so let’s get right into it.

Nars radiant concealer, then sets the under eye by baking it with Huda loose powder in Pound Cake.

1. Skin Prep Catriona preps her skin with micellar water. I am a fan of micellar water, but I didn’t have any on me at the time, so I just cleansed my face. She then added face oil. Although I’ve never tried face oil (I’m hesitant because of my oily acne prone skin), I hear great things. I opted for a vitamin E serum in its place. Then she added eye cream and topped it off with primer. Last, but not least, she applies Lucas’ Papaw ointment to her lips.

2. Face For foundation she uses Nars radiant foundation with a beauty blender; I used the Maybelline dupe. The coverage is great, it’s what I used at Miss USA. She applies the foundation in the center of her face and doesn’t like to go into her hair line. After this she adds

3. Eye shadow Step one for Catrionia’s eyes is highlighting her brow bone with Charlotte Tilburry’s The Dolce Vita palette. Then she shades her crease with a soft transitional brown shadow. She sweeps this in an outward motion to enhance her cat eye. After that, she blends a deeper brown and a red brown from Juvia’s Place Masquerade Palette, and applies these colors to her outer crease. She continues to deepen the look with a darker brown in her outer crease. Now she takes Nars Velvet Shadow stick to the inner corner of her eye and sweeps that out toward the center of her lid. Then she packs a shimmery bronze color, from the Masquerade palette, with her finger on the same spot she applied the shadow stick. Finally, she blends the look with a fluffy brush.

4. Liner

6. Eye liner & Mascara

This next step is one of my personal favorite. She uses an Urban Decay eyeliner pencil to line her upper lid and accentuate her cat eye. This softens the look and hides imperfections for a steps that follow.

To finish her liner she applies a black liquid liner to define her cat eye. She curls her lashes then coats them with Mabelline Hypercurl Mascara.

7. Shadow: Part 3 5. Back to shadow She returns to her eyes and applies Stila’s Glitter and Glow liquid shadow in Bronzed Bell to her inner lid. I didn’t have anything like that, so I made due by adding even more of the metallic shadow from my Nanamacs X Jacklyn Taylor palette. With a pointed shadow brush, she redefines the look again with a dark brown shadow.

Yes, we are back at it with the shadow. Once again, using a mix of brown and redish tone shadows from the Masquerade palette, she smokes out her lower eye, adds lower lash mascara, and lines the inside of her eyes with black liquid liner.

for Miss Universe, step-by-step 8. Powder

11. Highlight

I thought the moment I’ve been waiting for had arrived, setting powder! But I was wrong. She swirls some Laura Mercier Candlelight Sheer Perfecting Powder under her eyes to wipe away her baking powder, not to set the entire face. As someone with oily skin, this step killed me. I took some artistic liberty to add powder to my T-zone at this point.

With one of my faves, she uses a mix of Laura Mercier’s pink and gold highlighters on the top of her cheek bones. Then she adds even MORE highlighter to the highest point of her cheek bone, beneath the lower corner of her eyes, with the Fenty’s Diamond Bomb.

12. Eyebrows 9. Lashes Up next she applies demi-whispey eyelashes. And, get this, she adds a SECOND pair of lashes on top of them. I’ve done this in the past, but these lashes ended up looking heavy on my lids, so I wasn’t a fan. Last, she blends her natural lashes into her false ones with mascara.

Thank God, it’s finally time for brows!! My face looked so bizarre with out them. She fills them with two shades of Benefit’s brow pencil. To create a fluffy brow look she adds thin strokes of a K Palette brow pencil. She sets her brows by brushing Duo eye lash glue into them. I didn’t like the feel of this but it did hold my brows in place and achieved a fluffy brow look.

10. Contour Next, she highlights the bridge of her nose, to make it pop, then she contours the sides of her nose and connects her nose couture to the inner corners of her eyes, using an eyebrow palette. She continues contouring with her cheeks with Mac’s Gingerly and Peachy Keen blushes.

13. Lips Catriona used two products on her lips, a lip liner, then Fenty’s Stunna for her bright red pout.

14. Setting We are nearly finished. The final step of her Miss Universe makeup routine is to set the look with Makeup Forever’s Mist and Fix setting spray. Add side swept hair, and an ear cuff, and you’re golden.

15. Final Thoughts All-in-all Catriona Gray’s makeup is not the best look for me. This shows that one makeup look does not fit all. I liked elements of her makeup routine, like her super bright under eye but, the products felt heavy on my face. If your skin in oily like mine, I would adjust the skin prep steps of this tutorial, to better suit you skin because this routine immediately caused a break out on my skin.

Interview with Olivia Jordan: Model,Actress and Miss USA 2015 Interview by The Miss Universe Organization (MUO)

Olivia Jordan became the

first woman representing Oklahoma to bring home the Miss USA crown in 2015. Prior to her reign, Olivia was an advocate for Alzheimer’s Association, a cause that her parents have been dedicated to for over 30 years, and lobbied on Capitol Hill for increased research and funding to find a cure. Olivia was the host for a previous Oklahoma Chapter Alzheimer’s Association Memory Gala where she was proud to declare that $2M was raised in 2015 in Oklahoma with $1.3M raised in her hometown of Tulsa alone. Olivia has also been recognized as an outstanding advocate of Children of the Night, an organization that is dedicated to getting children out of prostitution in the United States. Standing at nearly six feet tall, Olivia stepped into her reign with a head start in Hollywood as a model and actress. The film credits that can boast her include Hot Tub Time Machine 2, 10.0 Earthquake, and Starving in Suburbia, among others. Olivia can be seen on TV screens across the globe from domestic and international commercial campaigns she has been in with brands such as Volkswagen, Agent Provocateur, and David’s Bridal to name a few. Now, Olivia Jordan has made a name for herself in LA through modeling and acting. We interviewed Olivia to get an overall look on how she became the woman she is today – including her recent accomplishment of becoming a Top 6 Finalist for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model Search.

MUO: What has the process of the Sports Illustrated [SI]

Swimsuit Model Search been like from the beginning to where you’re at now?

Olivia: I have always dreamed of

being an SI swimsuit model, which has led me to follow the Instagram accounts of the magazine, photographers and creative director for years. One week, I saw all platforms posting about an opportunity to submit an application for a model search via Instagram and I knew I had to take the chance. I posted a video, tagged #SISwimSearch and crossed my fingers. Within a few days, I had an inbox message asking me to come to NYC and meet them as one of the 35 finalists. From the NYC meetings and test photo shoots, the number was narrowed down to fifteen finalists. All fifteen of us went to Miami Swim Week where we shot the first ever Sports Illustrated swimwear

campaign and debuted their new swim line on the runway. After the show, we all returned home and waited for the call of who would continue on. Several months went by and then that dream call finally came through from the SI Creative Director herself. Now the final six of us will shoot for the 2018 issue and attend the launch in February!

MUO: What have you learned from the SI Swimsuit Model Search?

Olivia: The SI contest has been

similar to pageants in many ways, but instead of narrowing it down in a two-hour show, SI has been narrowing down from 5,000 applicants since April. The extended elimination time has taught me a lot about patience. I’ve had to stay very conscious to chase other goals and not just wait by my phone and wait for the SI call.

MUO: What health and wellness tips do you have for young women?

Olivia: It’s all about balance

and self-acceptance. The number one question I was asked before Miss USA and the SI Model Search is, “How will you get in shape?” The reality is that I try to live “in shape”. I workout 4-6 times a week, eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full. Some meals consist of veggies and lentils, while other meals include gluten free pizza and cupcakes. I’ve learned that diets don’t work for me because if I restrict, then I end up binging on junk foods. I allow myself the freedom to eat whatever I want in - in moderation - and set realistic goals so I can comfortably keep my body healthy when exercising.

MUO: What advice would you give to someone who hopes to have a modeling or acting career?

Olivia: The entertainment field

is a difficult industry to get into. Know yourself and get specific about what you want to accomplish and why. If you want the glamour of the industry without the work, acting will not be your path - 90% of the day-to-day will not be glamorous, it’s challenging. You are required to be your biggest self-advocate to get auditions, impress casting directors and get on set to do good work - even on tiring 14 hour days. There will be much more rejection than success, but if this is what your heart is telling you then go all in.

MUO: From Miss USA to now, how have you grown?

Olivia: One of the biggest chal-

lenges as Miss USA was losing part of my personal identity and adopting the perceived identity of “Miss USA”. Everywhere I went people knew my title before they knew my name. After giving up the crown, I had to - first of all, catch up on sleep - then refocus on what my next goal would be. I dove back into improv classes to shake off the pageant persona of always being “on”. Actors have to be comfortable being imperfect, messy, and utterly unattached to how they are perceived. I had to reconnect with that, so I spent a lot of time over the past year and a half in acting class to reconnect with my creative side. I grew a lot and faced a lot of challenges during my Miss USA reign. Now, I feel stronger and more confident than ever - in part because of my journey in the MUO system.

MUO: How do you feel that 4 out of the 6 girls chosen in the Top 6 were all once part of the MUO system?

Olivia: It’s not surprising to me

to see so many “pageant girls” in the final rounds of SI. Pageants teach us how to advocate for ourselves and how to go after what we want. My agent couldn’t get me the SI audition, so I did it myself. That kind of mentality is one that is innate to a contestant with a competitive mind in the Miss Universe Organization system. If you have a goal, go after it.

MUO: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Olivia: Within the next fiveyears, I hope to be a lead actress in a television show. Acting has always been my biggest passion. I hope that all of the relationships that I’ve built since becoming Miss USA to where I am now, will help open the doors to make my acting dream a reality.

MUO: Anything else you would like to add?

“It’s all about balance and self-acceptance.”

Olivia: Follow @TheOlivia-

Jordan on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to see behind the scenes moments of my upcoming shoot with SI Swimsuit. I will also be posting updates on the release of the two films I have worked on this year. Congratulation Olivia on your incredible accomplishments! We are looking forward to seeing what you do next.

Pageant Packing Checklist Ironically enough, as I was writing this article, I was in the process of packing; although the packing criterion for my escapade was restrictive, which is no fun. I am a diva and a bit high maintenance when it comes to packing, do I have any compatriots? I know, it’s hard, you would rather be safe than sorry. However, the average hotel room is not equipped with the capacity to house all of our precious “must haves.” So we here at Pageant Planet want to help you put on your practical hat and see what you truly need, what you don’t and how to pack it all. Packing can make you feel very anxious. I am right there with you, but as we often say on Pageant Planet, preparation and organization can make all of that stress disappear. Therefore, the painless cure to this issue is to get organized. I promise, with this step by step to do list, you will be on your way to a stress-free pageant week!

Pageant Packing Checklist Competition Wardrobe My suggestion is that when you pack each of your competition items that you pack those items together so that you can quickly grab the bag and make the necessarily changes throughout competition. This will also keep you organized and help you not to forget anything in your room.
