EXECUTING A GENERATIONAL BUSINESS MINDSET ✦ A Family Business is a Labour of Love

B

usinesses run by families that have lasted generations are always thinking long-term. The family-leaders of these businesses put generational survival over short-term success and immediate personal returns. Shepherding the business toward long-term viability is the main concern, which tends to make these businesses less profitable than non-family-owned organisations in boom times and more resilient in down economic times.

Family businesses focus on resilience more than performance. They forgo the excess returns available during good times in order to increase their odds of survival during bad times. They save for a rainy day. Leaders of family businesses often invest with a 10- or 20year vision, they concentrate on what they can do now to benefit the next generation, with the goal of their family business and legacy to continue on.

Family businesses have a resilience approach Most family-run businesses are financially conservative in both good times and tough times, they tend to invest in capital projects that they can afford and that are more likely to produce stronger returns for the business. Establishing processes, committing to ongoing succession planning, protecting a brand’s “mom-and-pop” identity, and remaining resilient are four

E X ECU TI N G A G EN ER ATI O N A L B USI N E SS M I N DSE T characteristics of family-run business long-term success. In his article “What Can All Businesses Learn from Family Businesses”, Forbes writer Dennis Jaffe arguably captured the familyrun business mystique best when he wrote: “As such, family ownership differs from unrelated owners focused primarily on maximising present profit. The difference lies in the present generation of owners’ connection to the past and the future. A member of the Hermes family perhaps put it best: ‘You don’t inherit a family business; you borrow it from your grandchildren.’

Characteristics of generational family businesses Family businesses play a critical role in the global economy, with some of the world’s most

7

successful businesses having been passed down through families from generation to generation. Only 12% of family businesses survive into the third generation and a mere 3% make it to the fourth, according to the Family Business Institute.

c Your family business might be in its infancy, deep into its first generation, or perhaps it is one of the 30% that remain active into its second generation. Regardless, as time goes on, the likelihood that the family business you’ve worked so hard to build and maintain will continue diminishes significantly.

A surprising 80% of the companies in the world are family-run; in the U.S., family businesses employ 60% of the workers and generate 78% of new jobs. (Source: Harvard Business Review.) A good number of these businesses are large and successful, and a handful have lasted for hundreds and hundreds of years.

Establish Processes Over Time Family-led organisations that survive for five years, a decade, or more all reach a tipping point eventually where processes must be established and implemented. Most family businesses that thrive and succeed across generations are good at balancing the intimacy characteristic of a family-run organisation with standard business operating procedures and processes.

Not many families own a zoo and for four generations! The Stone Family of Billabong Zoo

8

c To grow, family businesses need capable staff from outside the family; the business needs to ensure there is a fair, repeatable process and fair policies in place to attract and retain the staff required for the businesses success.

A family business cannot have long-term success if it is solely guided by the whims and moods of the matriarch, patriarch, or next generation leader.

Leveraging the Family Brand Family businesses that have succeeded across generations know how to leverage the familyrun brand to their advantage. Family-run or family-owned and -operated businesses - even just family member-led organisations

- tend to be trusted more by customers, clients and consumers. Family-run businesses tend to start from a position of strength when it comes to audience perception of their brand, benefiting to some degree from a long-standing affinity for the tradition of “momand-pop” authenticity and honesty. Family businesses that have survived across generations understand that this “momand-pop” trust is a valuable differentiator and they invest in the process and infrastructure to preserve it.

A FOUR GENERATIONAL BUSINESS WITH THE STONE FAMILY AT BILLABONG ZOO ✦ For four generations, the Stone family has dedicated themselves to the care and conservation of animals.

"W

e just bought a zoo." Not quite what you'd expect your parents to come home proclaiming on an ordinary day. The Stone Family has an extraordinary life, and it began precisely with buying a zoo! Those who have seen the movie We Bought a Zoo can see the movie in real life with the Stone Family and the beloved Billabong Zoo. The movie is based on the experiences of Benjamin Mee (played by Matt Damon in the movie), and Mark Stone actually spent time with him and both were able to exchange notes and agree that sometimes life throws you something quite crazy and unexpected! We get up close and curious with the Stone family and find out more about their experiences with the brilliant Billabong Zoo.

How Billabong Zoo started In 2003, the Stone Family acquired Billabong Zoo in Port Macquarie. Since then, the zoo has experienced a significant increase in visitors and a growing demand for annual passes from both locals and residents of New South Wales.

20 years as the custodians ➸ofCelebrating Billabong Zoo: Brooke, Danena, Mark,

Blake and three year old Thea.

10

Running a zoo is no easy task, despite the appeal of spending time with adorable animals. It requires substantial resources, with the cost of constructing a new enclosure reaching up to a quarter of a million dollars. Additionally, importing exotic breeds like Misty and Milo, the South African lion cubs, can come at a hefty price. However, these expenses are necessary investments as new animals attract a steady stream of revenue from enthusiastic crowds. The introduction of snow leopards in 2008 was a pivotal moment for Billabong Zoo, as it became one of the few zoos in Australia to house these magnificent creatures.

c Today, Billabong Zoo spans across a 10-acre property and is home to over 200 animals from 80 different species. You can explore the diverse range of animals at Billabong Zoo here.

Billabong Zoo - Koala and Wildlife Park

With 45 years of experience each in the zoo industry, Danena and Mark possess a deep passion for the welfare and care of the animals. They inherited this passion from their parents, and have passed it on to their children, ensuring a legacy of dedication to the zoo's inhabitants.

Zoo business runs in the family Animal lovers reading this are probably already romanticising, how lovely it must be to grow up in a family that actually owns a zoo and get to have these amazing animals as your best friends in your childhood.

Danena and Mark's two children, Blake and Brooke would understand this well. In fact, they are ready to take on the business when their parents retire. So for fans of Billabong Zoo, rest assured the zoo will be passed on to Blake and Brooke who know very well what running a zoo is all about. As the zoo grew, the Stone family took on more staff to maintain the structures, feed and care for the animals and look after the visitors e.g. during school groups and private tours. Mark Stone's family has been in this industry for four generations and he has seen how much the industry has changed (for the better) over the years.

c “Gone are the days of keeping animals in captivity purely for entertainment. Now it’s all about us being able to educate people on the plight of the animals through conservation education.”

11

Billabong Zoo has come a long way and they have even won the Excellence in Tourism at the 2022 Wauchope & Hinterland Business Awards!

A voice for the koalas Koala lovers would want to know this - Mark was the one who led the push to ban koala holding in NSW! What visitors and tourists may not be aware is that koalas don't really enjoy being hugged by strangers. It is a traumatising experience for them. While it may be that other zoos gain more than a million dollars a year by having koala cuddling photo services, Mark has put the koalas' welfare first.

➸ Best Job in the World!

12

Koala breeding programme Did you know that Billabong Zoo is regarded as a world-renowned koala breeding facility? Thanks to the Stone family, Billabong Zoo is providing genetically strong, health and new bloodlines of koalas to other zoos and sanctuaries throughout Australia. Before Mark bought Billabong Zoo, he was working for his parents who owned and operated their own wildlife park in Nowra NSW. It was there that he received his first koalas from another wildlife sanctuary. His fascination and

Adopt a Koala

love for these cuddly creatures has grown since then, and it has become his mission to ensure these animals are given the care and respect needed for them to grow. It has not been easy for Mark learning about breeding koalas as there was so little reliable information readily available in the early days. His commitment to learning has paid off and especially now with how koalas are becoming more and more endangered, breeding koalas has become even more necessary. Billabong Zoo uses the knowledge they gained from captive koala colonies to help and work with wild koala populations. Now they know what koalas need to survive, their limitations and what they need for protection in the wild. This also involves educating the public about the situation of the koalas in the wild, what we can do to help ensure their survival.

Mark hopes that one day, they can breed koalas in captivity that are specifically bred for release. It is his lifelong ambition. At the moment, no zoo in NSW is permitted to do that, but Mark remains optimistic about realising his dream. “I believe we have the facility, the expertise, and most importantly, the qualified staff to be able to pull this off. The Government needs to look to those with a successful captive breeding program to support a wild koala breeding program.” Learn more about Billabong Zoo's Koala Breeding Centre here. If you are interested in supporting Billabong Zoo's koala programme, you can Adopt a Koala here and make a difference!

Adopt a Koala

The loss of income does not hurt, because what Billabong Zoo gains as a result of this ban is a bunch of happy koalas who are breeding well. That is not an easy feat to accomplish and they are even able to supply other places with koalas. It is clear that conservation is at the heart of the business.

Growing up at a zoo "They are the noisiest things in the world," says Brooke about waking up to the sound of peacocks.

was smooth. Such has been her dedication and passion for wildlife, and it continues to drive her work today. She has done her Vet Nurse training as well as her Zoology degree.

Brooke was just seven when her parents moved from Nowra to Port Macquarie and bought Billabong Zoo. Brooke and her older brother Blake grew up on the grounds of the zoo amidst a multitude of furry and scaly friends. One needed no alarm clock living in such an environment as the cacophony of animal sounds is more than enough to wake one up!

For Brooke, being a Zoo Keeper goes beyond a career. It's a passion and the connection she has built up with the animals is priceless. One could say every animal at Billabong Zoo has become part of the Stone family.

As she grew up, Brooke found her speciality - big cats. When Misty had cubs, Brooke slept at the zoo to make sure the lioness was okay and that her labouring

13 animal and every enclosure inside out. One could say he literally grew into his career. Zoo Keeping was the most developed skill he had by the time Blake finished school, and it just felt natural for him to carry on at the zoo. Being interested in native and exotic animals led him to obtain his Captive Animals Cert IV and Training and Assessment Certificate IV which gave him the professional qualifications needed to work at Billabong Zoo and teach at TAFE. Blake is now back working full time at Billabong Zoo, managing and leading the next generation of zoo keepers. What really drives Blake, just like his father Mark, is being passionate about conservation. Billabong Zoo’s

➸ Brooke's speciality is the Big Cats!

14 motto is ‘Conservation through Education’, and every decision Blake makes focuses on this commitment to conservation, in order to make a real difference for animals and habitat preservation. “Billabong [Zoo] does a lot in the world of conservation” Blake says. “From the ambassador species our guests see throughout, our support of a number conservation charities to our involvement in both Managed Species Programmes and Breed and Release Programmes." Blake has spearheaded a number of animal conservation initiatives at the Zoo. “I am extremely proud of the work we’ve been able to do for endangered and near-threatened species. In the past twelve months alone, Billabong Zoo is the new home to the threatened Lumholtz’s

Tree Kangaroo, the vulnerable Glossy Black Cockatoo and critically endangered Orange-Bellied Parrots.” This passion for conservation is evident during the zoo’s daily visitor presentations. Blake and his team of knowledgeable zoo keepers focus on giving visitors take-home messages to make their experience memorable. It's about giving the visitors a good understanding of what conservation is about without coming on too strongly or passionately. It's finding that perfect balance of informative and entertaining, planting the seeds of conservation in the hearts of the visitors so they go home with a better understanding. Those who are in Australia are fortunate to be living with the

fantastic endemic fauna. It is important to nurture a better understanding of the native animals, what to do (and not to do) when they encounter native animals. It gives visitors a much clearer perspective and clear away any misunderstanding or fears of some native animals. Blake hopes patrons can be encouraged to get involved with some of the programmes that the conservation organisations Billabong Zoo promotes.

I want to be a Zoo Keeper! For readers out there who feel inspired or called to work with animals, the natural question is, how does one become a Zoo Keeper?

➸ Blake is now the Operations Manager at Billabong Zoo

A FOU R G EN ER ATI O N A L B USI N E SS WIT H T H E S TON E FA M I LY AT B I LL A BON G ZOO It is not an easy industry to break into, and there are so few zoos around which greatly reduces job opportunities. Many start by volunteering their time and studying their TAFE courses. Thereafter they can do their Animal Studies certificate II, and Captive animals certificate III which are the zookeeping-specific qualifications. These are what you need to gain employment in zookeeping. Some are hosted by zoos during their studies and training and this is where students need to leave a good impression so that zoos are happy to have them back as employees. In line with their conservation efforts, Billabong Zoo has a strong educational component to their events, and there are many ways to be involved with the zoo.

Due to the constant stream of parents and young people requesting to volunteer or have work experience at Billabong Zoo, Blake and his team worked hard to create their Junior and Teen Zoo Keeper programmes. “Being a zoo keeper isn’t all cuddling with koalas and feeding Shrek the crocodile. There’s a lot of work done that the general public doesn’t necessarily get to see.” Blake says. “You’d be surprised how much of the day is spent on things like raking up kangaroo droppings. These programmes give children and teens a real look at the day in the life of a zoo keeper.” Young children can experience being Junior Zookeeper for a Day during the school holidays. They are assigned to one of

the qualified zookeepers who will guide them through food preparation and the specific diets of the animals. Children learn to care for and protect animals. It is an unforgettable hands-on experience for children to experience the real world of zookeeping. For 13 to 17-year-old animal lovers, they can be Teen Zookeeper for a Day and learn to take part in the work, training and fun of a zookeeper, assisting in animal feeds, creating enrichment items for and interacting with animal ambassadors. ➸ What does it mean to be a family business? “I'm able to give our children and our family different opportunities than we would have been able to have had previously," Beth told us. "I didn't grow up with a lot of opportunities, I have worked pretty hard throughout my life to give our kids every opportunity that we possibly can.” Working in the business as a family has instilled Beth’s values in her children while teaching them lots of important life skills. “The things that mean the most to me, in a family run and operated business, would be the freedom to do the simple things that a father doesn't always, typically get to do in regards to school runs, award ceremonies, sport days on the weekends and just the general time spent at home where mum usually dominates that space," Leigh explained.

Beth and Brocky usually open at 6:30am and start baking their freshly homemade treats and set up the kitchen, fill up the fridges and work on the displays. Around 8:00am, Leigh arrives with the younger siblings, they have breakfast and then get the kids off to school before smashing into their busiest time of the day.

18 Leigh is essentially in charge of the front of house. With the coffees he is the head barista, customer service manager along with training all the staff. Leigh is also known around the cafe as “the maintenance guy”. Beth is more involved with HR, policies, procedures and processes, making sure that the business is running compliant to all health and hygiene standards and codes, along with the handling the accounts. She does all the POS adjustments and the websites and Apps development. In the kitchen

she takes care of hiring staff, training and menu planning. Brocky is the apprentice chef, coming to the end of his first year. Starting off as a front of house team member, learning the ropes and the customers, but then expressed an interest in wanting to go into the kitchen to start his career as a chef. He has always had the desire to do so, he enjoyed cooking with mum at home as a youngster as well as at school, he is interested in developing his skill and knowledge in sports and athlete nutrition.

16 year old Kaitlyn loves to bake! Upon completing her Year 10 Certificate last year, she has stepped straight into the workforce at the Cafe. Specialising in baking, everything she does is of a very high standard and quality, not only her baking, but her barista skills are top shelf. Kaitlyn is involved in the production of the beautiful cake bar full of scrumptious cakes, slices and pastries.

➸ Brocky is right at home in the kitchen.

c Adding to Kaitlyn's cooking selection are the group of local ladies affectionately known by the family as “The Aunties’, their surrogate family members.

Ashton will be 9 in January and is a big helper. He wakes up early most mornings, helps set up the cafe, takes the chairs out and helps fill up the napkin and sugar holders. He earns his $5 pocket money for the week by doing a few little jobs before school in the mornings. Ashton then makes his own lunch, does some home readers and if he’s lucky enough to have the time, watch a little YouTube. Then there’s 2 and a half year old Zeke, born into the role just three months into the family taking over the business, he is the Cafe Ambassador, he has had no choice, but has embraced it.

He wants to be involved, wants to be busy, he is a worker, it has been instilled in him from a young age and he really enjoys it. Beth told us, “ If he's not at daycare, and both of us need to be at work, he's here with us. He will have his own little crate and make his own little teas and coffees or he'll put his crate over next to Dad and help. Imaginary play alongside us.” The first 12 months of his life Zeke was raised in the cafe, a nursery was set up in the office, Beth could watch over him from her position in the kitchen and Leigh from his position from the coffee machine. Busy cafe life became his routine.

20

Having a business in the hospitality sector and raising a family can be a little bit hectic, but the Torrisis have embraced the challenge and feel they are so better off for it. “We've been able to share the parent role really well, because we've both been on the floor together with Zeke here," Leigh explained. “In a way it’s been a big advantage, we didn’t have to send him to daycare to try to work and have an income. He was able to stay with mum and dad, which is what we really both really want and was important to both of us.”

Communication is the key Leigh admitted that a family business does sometimes have its challenges, lots of challenges. But he thinks communication is key. “As long as there's good communication and knowing that for every problem there is a solution, the business will run smoothly.”

He explained that operating a family business can make things a little more stressful as your work life is incorporated into your home life. No two ways about it. If you work for someone else from 9 to 5 for example, when you knock off for the day you shut the door and go home, deal with any issues the next day. Work for yourselves, together, and often issues come home, so you're forced to sort them out, sometimes things are tense, but it has allowed them to deepen their communication. “Working together in our family business has definitely made us a hell of a lot closer,” said Leigh smiling. “ We've learned a lot more about each other. For example, when you are not working together, you don’t know each other's workload, and don't know when each other works best. We now know a different side of each other having worked together.”

Being together makes each day better The simplicity of having each other together every day, working together in the business and for their family, makes each day better.

c “I always compare myself to working for someone previously to now. There wasn't much room to move as a bloke if the kids were sick at daycare or school. But nowadays, we have that choice. One of us can deal with the kids if needed, the other stays at work,” Leigh told us.

FROM T H EI R FA M I LY TO YO U R S , A CL A SS Y C A FE Each family member is an individual and all add to the business in their own way; Beth brings a very high standard and procedure organisation. Brocky brings a level of enthusiasm, a fresh mind and a very coachable attitude in the way that they can graft him into being the best he can be. Kaitlyn comes with natural abilities, if she decides that she wants to do something you can bet that it's going to be a high standard to the best of her abilities. Ashton brings charm. Everybody loves Ashton, especially the customers. He has the ability to have a

21 somewhat mature conversation beyond his years, he can hold his own in conversations with customers on a general day to day basis. Then there’s Zekey, he’s a little worker. Customers love seeing Zeke, after all a lot have seen him grow from seven 7 days old. Thousands of people in the area have physically watched him grow from a babe to a toddler. “ Having our children, these beautiful kids and young adults in the workplace enforces that we are a family business that has grown and will continue to grow closer and stronger because of it.” said Leigh.

Where will the Torrisis be in 5 years? Leigh told us that he would like to think that they would still have the business A Classy Cafe, plus another one potentially where the elder children, Brocky and Kaitlyn are working together and expanding on the skills instilled in them by their parents. “ By then they will be more mature and ready to take on the opportunity to have a leadership role and run their own place, with Beth and my guidance and management.” Watch this space, a new, fresh restaurant may be on the horizon!

So proud of you all for the commitment, effort and creativity to design this amazing event!" Gayle Kee, General Manager of TG's Child Care

Graduation Day starts from Day One! Graduation Day is not just a oneday, one-off event. It starts from the day a child first steps into TG's.

Unique portfolios Throughout a child's learning journey at TG's, Educators observe each child's interests, experiences, development and their work are kept in a portfolio over the year. This precious compilation of all the magical moments that make up a child's day at TG's is then presented to families. Each portfolio is unique and contains evidence of how each child has been developing and building on some of the important processes for lifelong learning. For proud families, this portfolio is the true graduation certificate, as it shows how their children have been developing and there is so much to celebrate in every piece of work.

Beyond Big School Graduation Day is also about giving the children the foundational skills and tools they need every day at TG's for sustainable learning. It's about going beyond Big School, and the children have the tools and skills they need to continue Playing it Forward even after they leave TG's. Whether it's having a Little MEG in your pocket, building healthy curiosity about the world around them, willing to explore and experiment, learning to foster relationships with the children, Educators and their communities with love, kindness and respect, learning to care for the environment, realising they can make a positive difference to their worlds, or sharing their gifts, these all empower TG's children to create a better environment and society for tomorrow, starting right here, right now. That is why TG's Child Care is the proud stewardship of the children's future, and every Graduation Day is a testament to the amazing work they do year after year without fail.

NSW BUSINESS CONDITIONS AND FESTIVE SEASON CHALLENGES ✦ The final Business Conditions Survey of the year has now been released, revealing a forecast 11% drop in Christmas trade across the state. Business NSW CEO Daniel is urging the public to get out there and support our local businesses this festive season.

B

usinesses have been facing a range of economic challenges throughout the year. These challenges include increasing costs, shortages of workers and skills, the impact of higher interest rates, and weakening customer demand.

While some parts of the economy have shown resilience, overall business confidence has been low due to an uncertain economic outlook, which has been further complicated by recent conflicts in the Middle East. Official forecasts from the NSW

Government and Reserve Bank of Australia suggest that economic activity will remain sluggish in 2024. The latest quarterly Business Conditions Survey, conducted from 29 October to 13 November, received a total of 845 responses

from various industries and regions in NSW. It's important to note that the RBA announced a 25-basis point increase to the cash rate on 7 November, which is the 13th rate hike in the current tightening cycle. The report below highlights the key differences in survey findings before and after the rate hike.

Key Findings The headline Business Confidence Index has improved to -57.6 in the last quarter of 2023, the highest reading in three quarters. The cohort that completed the survey

after the RBA rate hike had a confidence level of -66.2, notably lower than the confidence level of -52.1 for those who submitted their survey responses before the rate hike. Christmas trading is expected to fall on average 11% this year compared to last year. Businesses in two regions (Hunter Valley and Far West and Orana) are anticipating a decline in excess of 20%. Interest rate concerns have intensified, especially following the latest RBA rate hike. Businesses remain most concerned about customer demand. Insurance and energy are again the top two business cost concerns, followed by taxes, levies and other government charges.

71% of businesses have sought information and advice on how to manage energy costs or energy use. Businesses are most interested in energy provider comparison services, deals and offers. The cost of doing business is the largest barrier to achieving higher profit growth and business expansion. For businesses that have invested in lifting productivity, the most common approach is staff training, followed by machinery and equipment and IT programs. Across NSW, most businesses (63%) intend to maintain the same staff headcount for the next 3 months. However, there are regional variations. In the Far West & Orana, 43% plan to cut staff. BEING BOLD FOR BOWEL CANCER BY JUMPING ON THE HAIRWAGON! ✦ December is a time to let one’s hair grow while raising awareness about an extremely important health issue.

➸ Decembhair provides you an equal opportunity to get involved with the same movement!

resulting in some impressive and hilarious facial hair creations. While it is very much a fun affair, the drive behind it is wholeheartedly serious - to raise awareness and funds to help men’s health.

A

sk a room full of people who are familiar with Movember and chances are pretty much everyone will raise their hand. Most people have at least heard of the occasion, when men the world over decline from shaving above the lip for the entire month of November,

Decembeard and Decembhair for Bowel Cancer Ask the same room of people if they are familiar with Decembeard and I bet you the number of positive responses will be much lower. Similarly, ask about

B RI LLI A NT H E A LT H

37

Decembhair and you’re pretty much guaranteed to be met with shakes of the head and quizzical looks. However, both are movements in their infancy that strive towards an equally important goal as their Movember cousin – raising awareness of bowel cancer, officially Australia’s second deadliest cancer killer.

Use BRILLIANT15 for 15% off AC Healthy Solutions products

Decembeard was originally launched by Bowel Cancer UK as a fun way to engage the public to raise awareness and lend

support to patients and families impacted by bowel cancer, while simultaneously raising funds to help research. The rules for Decembeard are simple: clean shave on November 30 but then do not shave your face throughout the entire month of December, while seeking sponsorship from friends, family, co-workers, etc in the process. Since its launch in the UK, the occasion has gone on to receive acclaim globally, none more so than in Australia, where it has been enthusiastically received and officially driven by Bowel Cancer Australia. Sure, it means

there are a fair number of Santa lookalikes by the time New Year’s Day rolls around but the fun, and more importantly, the funds raised in the process, more than make it worthwhile! In fact, many guys even dress up their beards to align with the festive time of year, with tinsel, baubles and the like!

More hirsute than usual... For those who struggle or are unable to grow facial hair, fear not as Decembhair provides you an equal opportunity to get involved with the same movement!

38

c Whether it’s on your head, chest, body, legs, arms, eyebrows, wherever, Decembhair allows you to choose a spot on your body and let it all hang out, meaning not cutting or trimming the hair in that designated spot for the same timeframe as Decembeard.

This also means, of course, that members of the fairer sex can get involved and raise awareness

and funds to combat a cancer that does not discriminate by gender. It might mean skipping your next couple of waxing appointments and appearing a little more hirsute than usual but that’s kind of the point, committing to a temporary change of lifestyle and image outside your usual comfort zone to raise awareness and initiate conversation on such a key topic.

Shave the Date Getting set up is easy and there are a variety of ways you can get involved to raise both awareness and funds, such as by creating teams, organising fun-themed events like Best Beard and Shave

the Date, spreading the word and photos via social media channels and by involving your work place for support, including your boss! Movember has become a fixture in our contemporary world, something that Decembeard and Decembhair very much hope to emulate in the years to come. All involve a lighthearted approach and a whole lot of fun in raising awareness and funding research to help combat a cancer that impacts many of us so why not get involved and be part of a bigger cause for the greater good. For more information please visit Bowel Cancer Australia’s page on the event.

FUN PLAY IS SAFE PLAY – ENJOYING SAFE TOYS AND GIFTS THIS CHRISTMAS ✦ Given the sheer volume of gift giving and present sharing during the festive period, it makes sense to denote the month of December as 'Safe Toys and Gifts Month'.

M

illions of gifts will be exchanged, given and donated this Christmas, especially to young children, as the magic of the festive season and Santa Claus weaves its enchanting tale. However, in amongst all the joy and excitement, it pays to do your due diligence and ensure that any gifts you are giving to friends, family and loved ones are safe and do not pose any kind of health threat, particularly to young ones. Now we don’t for one second want to diminish the joy of Christmas, appearing like a damp squib to quash all the festive joy! However, it is equally important to pay heed to ensure safety for all is adhered to.

c According to data from a November 2023 report by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were an estimated 209,500 toy-related injuries treated in American hospital emergency departments in 2022; “76 percent were sustained by children 14 years of age or younger; 69 percent were sustained by children 12 years of age or younger; and 38 percent were sustained by children 4 years of age or younger,” the report states.

➸ Millions of gifts will be exchanged, given and donated this Christmas

B RI LLIA NT CH RIS TM A S

Elsewhere, the European Toy Safety Directive is one of the strictest toy safety legislations around, rigid in defining the essential safety requirements that toys must meet before being placed on the market.

c Down Under, the Australian Toy Association (ATA) represents “more than 280 manufacturers, importers and retailers of toys, accounting for about 90% of all toys distributed in Australia” with a simple yet effective directive: to help keep children safe during play.

45

Exercising caution is no bad thing Knowing there are rigid safety regulations in place is one thing, although can you do more to safeguard your little one’s safety? The answer, quite simply, is absolutely, and exercising additional caution is encouraged. One of the most fundamental rules, even if seemingly obvious, is often overlooked – that of age restrictions. There are age restrictions clearly stipulated on pretty much every toy you will ever encounter, and they are there for a reason. If the packaging states the product is not suitable for children of a certain age then ensure you comply. Simple. Another point that may sound common sense but is often

overlooked is around discarded packaging and the clearing and disposal of such. Let’s be honest, most kids just cannot wait to get their new gift out of the box so they can play with it, and the packaging is dismissed almost as quickly as the gift is unwrapped! But check that discarded boxes, etc do not have any rough edges or sharp protrusions that could cause injury, regardless of how seemingly innocuous. Similarly, ensure you clear all wrapping paper and boxes away once discarded as they can make for dangerous situations when left lying around (excited kids running around and slipping on forgotten wrapping paper is a much more perilously common scenario than you would think!) Again, sounds simple, but just run a quick check on the toy once opened to check all is in order – you can

➸ Safety is paramount in every industry, but the toy industry has to

be arguably more stringent

46 even mask your safety check drill by appearing to share your child’s joy on opening the gift, asking to see it yourself with a “wow, how cool, look at that” comment or something similar is sure to do the trick! Making sure that small accompanying parts to the toy are safe within your child’s possession, ensuring batteries are deployed correctly and also changed regularly where needed, setting up outdoor toys in safe places such as over grass or sand and never concrete, making sure any

string-based toys are taken out of your babies' cot when they sleep, are all prudent measures to minimise the likelihood of accidents. Likewise, if the toy is something your child can ride, such as a bicycle, scooter or similar ‘vehicle’, then provide protective gear such as a helmet and knee pads and keep your eyes peeled for the first few days at least until they are more comfotable – the U.S. Consumer Product Safety report previously alluded to explained

that “nonmotorized scooters were associated with the largest number of estimated toy-related injuries” last year.

Take care of your eyes In today's digital age, it's common to gift children digital devices. However, it's crucial to educate them on maintaining a safe screen distance. Research highlights that holding books or screens too close for extended periods can increase the risk of myopia

of the toy is ➸ Parental supervision and paying attention to thethegrade first prevention

47

B RI LLIA NT CH RIS TM A S (short-sightedness). Additionally, prolonged screen use can reduce blinking rates, leading to dry, uncomfortable, or red eyes. Blinking is vital for maintaining healthy eye surfaces and clear vision. Both children and adults often hold screens closer than books, putting extra strain on the eyes' focusing system. Digital eye strain, affecting up to 50% of screen users, can result in symptoms like soreness, fatigue, dry eyes, and headaches.

c To promote safe viewing, eye doctors and optometrists recommend the Elbow Rule for children, advising that books or digital devices should be held at a distance no closer than the child’s elbow-to-hand length.

The last thing we want to be doing is becoming overly cautious and taking the joy out of, what is for most children, the happiest time of the year. Santa comes but once a year and the joy and fun associated

with this should be celebrated, among children and the whole family. Just exercising a lick of common sense and being prudent with safety measures at the same time can ensure that everyone

enjoys the occasion and stays safe not only during the festive period itself but throughout the rest of the year.

‘A VERY COSPLAY CHRISTMAS’ ✦ headspace Port Macquarie brings pop-culture to Wauchope for this year’s Wauchope Cosplay Festival, supported by the Port Macquarie Hastings Council Community Grants Program.

'A

Very Cosplay Christmas' aims to foster connection, culture and creativity by bringing the whole community together for a fun day out! Headspace Port Macquarie is excited to present this free for all ages, inclusive pop-culture event held at the Wauchope Library precinct Saturday, December

➸ Cosplay Festival 2022 was a colourful event 16th, 10am-2pm. The event seeks to connect young people, their friends, family members and Cosplay lovers alike. The inaugural Wauchope Cosplay Festival was held in 2022 and was a raving success with over 400 attendees dressing up in their best cosplay outfits. This year the festival is back and bigger than ever but this time with a Christmas twist.

c Cosplayers are encouraged to think outside the box to create their character using this year’s theme, ‘A Very Cosplay Christmas’.

B RI LLIA NT CH RIS TM A S This idea came about courtesy of community member and volunteer Virginia Cox during her work with Headspace and the Community Drug Action Team. Headspace Community Engagement Coordinator and festival organiser Jules Jamieson says, “There’s a real need to bring events to different areas in the LGA, and collectively we decided that Wauchope would be a great place to host the event it’s central to outlying areas and is a great opportunity for the town to celebrate what it has to offer. "We have found the compounding effects of COVID, floods and the rising costs of living are affecting everyone’s mental health, particularly families. From loss of employment and housing challenges, to feelings of uncertainty and at times hopelessness. The first step in

49 rectifying the impact of these is to offer something exciting and out of ordinary, to bring people together. "Our hope is that the Wauchope Cosplay Festival will nurture self-expression and inspire motivation. The workshops and the entertainment on offer are designed to stimulate discussion and help people relax and have fun," explains Jules.

Not sure what Cosplay is but keen to find out? Well, there's something for everyone! From the Youth Makers Market, where you can support local youth by purchasing their homemade goods and creative wares (bring your cash), to the Circus Skills show and main event, the all ages Cosplay Parade.

Fun will also be had by getting involved in the Box Head Workshop. Create a box head in the morning and enter the Boxhead parade. Try your hand at learning and creating a new skill by joining in the activities of Zentangle Art and Christmas decoration workshops. The amazing Lightning Lucy, the Candy Cowgirl and her side-kick, Katie the Harley Quinn Hoop Extraordinaire will be showcasing all their best tricks in an interactive circus show. The incredible Jaya Lyons, an amazing young local artist will help to inspire and support those interested in art and illustration. If these activities don’t float your boat, then come along to enjoy free face painting, sausage sizzle and live music by upcoming local stars, ‘Kilipati’ and Cam Alford’.

50 There are lots of prizes on offer for Cosplay entrants, but anyone that turns up on the day goes into the draw to win an amazing lucky door prize. Virginia Cox, self-confessed cosplay fanatic, who is coordinating the festival alongside Headspace says she is proud to bring the event to Wauchope. "I’ve been involved with the organisation of smaller cosplay events in the past, but this one

is special because it’s clear the community needs and wants this type of festival. Wauchope doesn’t get a lot of big events so I am glad I can bring my creativity and flair to the area," Virginia explained. "I’m grateful to Jules and Emily and the rest of the volunteers from headspace - not only do they support the health and wellbeing of participants, but also local businesses who are hired to provide goods and services on the day," she added.

Headspace Port Macquarie is part of the National Mental Health Foundation and provides free early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds. Young people are supported across four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol/other drug services.

ENCOMPASSING CULTURAL DIVERSITY WITH A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE ✦ December is Learn a Foreign Language month and it is a brilliant opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity that is all around us. That multicultural diversity is our universal language.

➸ Teaching English in the financial district of Madrid Proud to be Singaporean

I

f it's one thing that I'm incredibly proud of as a Singaporean, it's having grown up in an environment that was, and still is so rich in cultural diversity. We grew up hearing several languages around us. We had neighbours, friends, classmates of different ethnic groups, we got to celebrate the most important festivities of each of these groups (yes, it's like

celebrating several new years across the entire year!) and it felt completely natural to us. We are able to fully embrace the differences in our cultures, and to share the richness of our cultures with one another. And for those of us who love to eat, growing up in a multicultural environment meant we have access to the culinary delights of ALL the cultures! That is one (g) astronomical luxury!

Teaching English in Spain I have been teaching English in Spain for the past 17 years and so December as Learn a Foreign Language month is special to me. When I first came to Spain I did not speak a word of Spanish. Ultimately I learnt the language simply by being immersed in it. I took a couple of Spanish lessons in an academy but my

English as a lingua franca So for English speakers out there, you may ask, why learn a foreign language when English has been the lingua franca and probably will continue to be for a while? Furthermore, we have DeepL and subtitles on Netflix, and with technological advances I won't be surprised if one day we'd all be fitted with some invisible earpiece that can immediately translate any language straight into our ears. As someone who loves learning and teaching languages, I am not wild about that level of technological breakthrough though!

There are many benefits to learning a foreign language, and those who are lovers of languages will understand perfectly that learning a foreign language goes beyond mere words and syntax. It's an art, a sort of music, and there's so much culture, history and experiences embedded in a language. No machine can adequately transmit all of that richness.

for trying their best to learn English, for business or to get better career opportunities. It is an added pressure for many to have to attend English classes on top of a heavy workload that is bordering dangerously on burnout nowadays. It somewhat takes away the enjoyment of really learning the language as it feels like an obligation, if they want to 'get ahead'.

A little goes a long way

My students share their concerns and frustrations with me in their language learning experience, and for what it's worth, I hope English native speakers who work with non-English speakers can show

Having spent all these years teaching English in Spain, I have to give the Spaniards credit

a bit of grace and understanding if you see them feeling uncomfortable. Try learning a foreign language, and you'll appreciate it a lot more when someone else makes the effort to learn yours. For English speakers out there, even if you learn a phrase or two of another language and show you're not afraid to have a little laugh with the other person at yourself, it can go a long way to helping the other person ease up. Humour helps bring catharsis, and that momentary relief can mean so much to the non-English person trying their best to speak English with you.

Why learn a foreign language Those of us who are lucky to be doing it out of interest and passion will know the joy of understanding

57

one word, then figuring out a chunk of words and finally being able to make out a full sentence gives such a mega dopamine boost it keeps you coming back for more.

Here are three reasons why it's beneficial to learn a foreign language. 1. It makes you more creative. According to the World Economic Forum, one of the most in-demand skills in the future is Creative Thinking. Learning a foreign language engages the creative part of your headspace. You not only learn the analytical aspects of a language but also the culture and history of the place where the language is spoken. It helps you to see the world with different perspectives. This mere change

Funniest scenes from Mind Your Language

of vision can help make you more flexible in your mindset which is a key quality in being creative. Learning a foreign language means you have to find a different way of understanding why words are put together in a different way, which is very stimulating for the brain. It means you learn to take a potential issue or problem, understand it from different angles and ultimately come up with more solutions to resolve it.

c To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world. – Chinese Proverb

58

2. It expands your career options. One could say increasingly we're living in a multicultural world and not just a multicultural country. Companies have branches in different countries and outsource services to various places. The need for employees who can manage different languages is a huge plus. If you have already learnt another foreign language, it already greatly increases your capacity to learn another. So if you are given an incredible promotion

opportunity to work in another country, the language of that country won't be a deterrent as you'll be willing to pick it up. Having various languages under your belt is a way to stand out from the crowd amidst the vast array of CVs that companies receive. Many companies have an international department which will require people who are comfortable working among different languages. In general, those who are proficient in more than one language are high in demand as they are seen as better

communicators, being more sensitive to languages.

3. It stimulates the brain. It's like gym training for the brain. Our brains love getting a good mental workout. It keeps it fresh and juicy. While many may groan at having to learn grammar, the effort you spend doing that helps your neurons create new pathways, the brain gets stronger each time you use it. According to scientists, we use our left brain when speaking our native language, but when it

➸ Having various languages under your belt is a way to stand out

from the crowd

B RI LLIA NT COMMU N IT Y comes to the next language, we use both sides of the brain. Research shows that learning foreign languages can help stave off diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia to a later age. Maybe it's time to dust off that old French coursebook and have a go at parler français. In our digital revolution age, it is even more important to consciously proactively do activities that stimulate the brain. When was the last time you memorised phone numbers or someone's

59 birthday? With smartphones and Facebook birthday reminders, we are using less and less of our gray matter. Also, with the constant bombardment of social media all around us, we are losing our ability to hold our attention. We swipe away videos before we've even finished watching it, and we scan through a post and immediately scroll down and don't even remember what we read. Our attention span is reducing and learning a new language can help prevent this from getting worse.

It makes the brain stay focused. When you speak two languages, if you need to toggle between them, your brain actually needs to really concentrate.

Make it FUN! Children pick up new languages easily, not just because they're young and have brains like sponges. The key point is they are not always aware they are learning something new, and very often it's done in a spirit of fun and games. And lots of singing!

60 If you are inspired to learn a foreign language this December, why not do it in the spirit of openness and fun too! If you can find someone who speaks that language to encourage you and converse with you, that's even better. I have been learning Hungarian for the past three years, and while it is known as a notoriously difficult language to pick up, it helps put me in the mindset of a student, which really helps in my job when I'm teaching. The fact that it is a challenge makes it a very humbling experience. Thanks to technology, you can learn a language regardless of where you are in the world. I found a Hungarian learning platform called Hungarize and started with a teacher there, learning a bit every day and using tools such as Zoom to have online

conversations, and even using WhatsApp to make videos to send to each other about topics we're interested in, and using Google Docs to keep a record of our notes and corrections. Even when I go on holiday I can continue learning and there's also a whole online community of other students I can interact with. I plan to continue learning so I can keep my gray matter well muscled! In fact, I already have my retirement plan all mapped out - I will be busy learning all the languages I'm interested in, anything from Greek to Russian, or even Sign language to Morse Code! "We should learn languages because language is the only thing worth knowing even poorly." – Kató Lomb (Hungarian translator, and one of the first simultaneous interpreters in the world who worked professionally with 16 languages)

c Ultimately, whatever language we speak, there is a universal language we all understand. We all smile, laugh, cry and love in the same language.

Why not have a little potluck this December to celebrate Learn a Foreign Language month with all your friends and family from various cultures and not just acknowledge but also celebrate the miracle of different cultures being able to get together, partake of beautiful food and simply have a good time with one another?

TOP 5 NEW YEAR’S EVE DESTINATIONS ✦ If ever there is a time to celebrate, then New Year’s Eve is it!

W

hether you’re toasting the year just gone by, looking to what lies ahead, or just letting your hair down and having a blast, it is a time that is pretty much universally marked by raucous celebrations and good cheer; it is a time to reflect and savour time with friends, family and loved ones as Mother Earth completes another full revolution of the sun. With that in mind, there is a whole host of locations to ponder for your end of year celebrations, from Sydney to San Francisco and Tokyo to Toronto, with any number of alternative options in between, so we thought we would streamline five popular destinations for your consideration.

SYDNEY

➸ NYE Harbour Bridge Sydney photos: Karen Williamson, Oz Land Photos

of the equally-famous Harbour Bridge sit front and centre during a breathtaking fireworks show. There are two shows, at 9pm and 12 midnight, with the latter lasting 12 minutes and costing millions of dollars each year, wowing the one million plus spectators that gather

on the shoreline and in boats for a truly unforgettable occasion.

History of the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Sydney is consistently at the forefront of any list and almost impossible to ignore as a leading New Year’s Eve destination. It’s worth remembering there are several factors that play into its favour. Primarily, location. Sydney is arguably the first major international city to welcome in the New Year, and the notion of first is best often rings true. The city’s physical location also bodes well - Sydney Harbour is one of the most picturesque and captivating spots in the world at the best of times, where nature and manmade constructions sit side-by-side in harmony like few other places. New Year’s Eve sees things ratchet up another level altogether as the splendour of the world renowned Opera House and the grandeur

63

B RI LLIA NT COMMU N IT Y Another, often overlooked, advantage Sydney has working for it is the weather, with the balmy summer temperature typically meaning no need for heavy clothes to fend off the elements – this may sound somewhat trivial but from a person who has experienced it many times when compared to the biting cold of locations such as London, Tokyo and New York, trust me, it makes the world of difference! When in Sydney, just pack your picnic, slip on your thongs and head for your favourite spot to marvel at the festival ahead!

PORT MACQUARIE, NSW Port Macquarie's NYE Fireworks: See the sky light up in Port Macquarie again this New Year's Eve with two amazing Fireworks shows, at 9pm and Midnight. The fireworks will be set off from a pontoon on the Hastings River near Pelican Island.

LONDON That being said, there is something truly captivating and special about celebrating New Year in

➸ NYE London. Photo: Archer St Bar England’s capital city! For a lad from the northern hemisphere, the festive period SHOULD be cold – Santa rides a sleigh, not a surfboard, after all! The south bank of the Thames is where it’s at on

December 31 come 12 midnight as the London Eye, floating barges and the surrounding landmarks all align in a fantastic pyrotechnics show to wow the hundreds of thousands of revellers.

Here's a map of Sydney's vantage points to watch the NYE fireworks. Plan ahead and pick your favourite spot!

64 Hearing Big Ben chime in the background as the New Year is beckoned in just adds to the romanticism of the occasion. Sure, it can get a bit nippy, especially if you arrive early in the evening planning to snag a prime viewing spot, but it is worth it and just means you cuddle closer to those loved ones as the evening goes on – plus there are plenty of fine public houses within a short walking distance where you can partake in a nip of brandy or drink of choice to warm your cockles afterwards!

Check out the best Singapore food in London if you're there this new year!

NEW YORK While Sydney is the first major city to welcome in the New Year and London is one typically associated with tradition, New York is without doubt the most widely recognised. New Year in Times Square, New York has become the stuff of legend, mainly thanks to numerous romantic portrayals via a variety of Hollywood movies that have made us all feel part of the occasion at some point and it’s fair to say it’s on the bucket list for many people. Close to one million people squeeze into Times Square to marvel at the plethora of flashing billboards and countdown to the ball drop to signify a New Year. Strict rules are in place, however, including a blanket ban on alcohol

consumption, which might be a blessing in disguise for those with weaker bladders needing to nip to the bathroom as the chances are your spot is very unlikely to be reserved!

RIO DE JANEIRO Think of locations one automatically associates with a party and Rio de Janeiro is almost certain to spring to mind. The Brazilian city has its annual carnival and numerous events on its world famous Copacabana Beach all year round that embrace colour, music, culture and joy. And it is no different come December 31 as the same beach welcomes over 2 million revellers to count down and usher in the New

➸ Party into the new year at the beach in Goa! Year with a jaw-dropping 20-minute fireworks display, as champagne is sprayed far and wide, pulsating samba beats play well into the early hours and parties rage even longer. People tend to dress in stark white clothes with green, yellow and red accessories which resemble health, propserity and romance respectively.

GOA For our final destination we also opt for a beach location, one that appears on many lists detailing the top picks for New Year’s Eve spots. Goa has developed a legendary status over the decades as a party place and New Year’s Eve is no different as a variety of

musical festivals, dazzling fireworks displays and underground parties bound at popular beaches such as Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Colva, Benaulim and Palolem. It’s a bit more rustic and humble than the other options but welcoming in the New Year on a pristine beach in warm temperatures is one that many people see great merit in.

CELEBRATING BRILLIANT-ONLINE’S TOP FIVE STORIES OF 2023! ✦ As another year draws to a close, we decided to cast our eyes back across the past 12 months and revisit some of the Brilliant stories we have brought to you.

➸ Tyson Fury opens up about men's mental health

T

hat might sound a touch grandiose but we genuinely believe that the number of informative stories we have presented covering so many diverse and eclectic topics are all, indeed, BRILLIANT! Come join us to celebrate 1000 stories on our 3rd Birthday on 20th January on board Port AdVenture Cruises. In the past year we have met Cavoodles and Poodles from Ruff n’ Roll, glimpsed into the future with ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence, talked with one of the producers of the Greatest Elvis Show on Earth, heard about the merits of a no-carb

diet, been introduced to a whole host of superheroes, including one the world’s youngest solo flying pilots, and been on a roller coaster journey with Australian women’s football team The Matildas. We have learnt more on topics as varied as diabetes, scoliosis, Hari Raya Haji, Black Friday, Ramadan, synchronised swimming, peanut butter, sleep, youth entrepreneurs, the Melbourne International Film Festival, mooncakes, rooftop bars, Spanish monasteries, dementia and The Sydney Hot Shots. We have welcomed regular contributions from our friends at Port AdVenture Cruises, TG’s Child

Care, AC Healthy Solutions and been presented with numerous travel stories and suggestions by our resident globetrotter Susie Boswell. There are so, so, so many more that it would literally be impossible to recount them all, so we decided to recap the top five most read, most popular stories of 2023.

The Gypsy King opens up In June we heard about British World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Tyson Fury and his battle with mental health challenges. When not fighting

➸ tough battles against opponents in the ring, Fury opened up with brutal honesty regarding the ongoing battle he endures with invisible internal demons outside the ring, how it has undermined and destabilised him and how he strives to best cope. For a man deemed amongst the toughest on the planet, Fury’s candid openness was welcome and is a huge boost for progression in men’s health. Since the article, Fury has released a hugely-popular reality TV show on Netflix charting his homelife and supposed retirement, was given a scare in the ring by a former UFC fighter

Sustainability is a reality in Spain

and has confirmed a date for the winner-takes-all heavyweight showdown against Ukaine’s Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia on February 17 next year. Certainly never a dull moment when The Gypsy King is around!

Sustainability the key in Spain Elsewhere, in late May we learnt about the measures in place and progress being made in Spain in relation to sustainability and how the country is setting an example to others. Sustainability is a term that is becoming

increasingly prevalent in modernday discourse - whether in relation to economic, environmental or social sustainability, it is a topic we cannot, and should not, ignore. Policies set at governmental level, and the adherence to such by a conscious public, has seen significant progress by Spaniards and residents of the country in relation to issues such as climate change, pollution, irrigation, food production, waste management and alternative power sources that we could all take note of. You can read much more on the fantastic work being done here.

Flying High at Port Macquarie Airport Another of our top five stories focused on a key infrastructure upgrade at Port Macquarie Airport in the guise of the opening of the new $8 million taxiway project. Reported back in March, the story explained how “together with the renewal of the existing general aviation (GA) taxiway and apron pavements, the new taxiway is an enhancement of the safety, access and operational efficiency of the airport.” Port Macquarie Airport, of course, is an essential link for local communities to the rest of the country and beyond and thus news of the taxiway development opening, considered by many the final piece of the airport upgrades, was a hugely popular one among local readers. You can read the complete story on the official opening by clicking here.

➸ Port Macquarie Airport's new runway

Trumpeting the values of Faith and Love Knowing what a kind-hearted, loving bunch our readers are, it perhaps came as no great surprise that one of our top five stories this year featured an animal! Written purposefully in a playful tone from the protagonist’s perspective, the adventures of Trumpet was wonderfully received and generated some genuinely lovely feedback. Trumpet is a cat living in the jungles of Phuket, Thailand who embraces life’s challenges and joys in equal measure. He relays his fondness of his elephant friends and suspicion of humans until he has to trust his own instincts and befriend the latter, which pays big dividends. His story is one of innocence, wonder, growth, faith and love that we can all associate with and learn from in one way or another. You can read it in full here.

➸ Trumpet the Cat's story has a happy ending

B RI LLIA NT COMMU N IT Y Since the story was published in August there have been a few changes in Trumpet’s life as his new found human friends were forced to move away and were unable to take him with them. However, a kind and loving local lady took him under her care and has built a beautiful bond since – Trumpet now gets daily fish treats and lots of fuss, we are assured, proving that happy endings are the best!

A Trifle of Great Importance Last but not least, it just wouldn’t be a Brilliant top five without a story on food! Ahead of Britain’s King Charles III’s official coronation in May, we got the right Royal scoop on a mouth-wateringly delicious Strawberry and Ginger Trifle recipe from Adam Handling.

The hugely popular dish was the official desert of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee 12-months previous and was thus reclaimed for her son’s ceremony, no doubt going down equally well. Pilot Conversion Pilots who already have a General Aviation licence but want to convert to flying LSA aircraft have to go through at least 5 hours of training, an exam and a challenging Flight Test. Congratulations to Kirk Byrnes 23.12.22!

Flying Scholarship Winners Since 1961, HDFC has been offering flying scholarships. Two scholarships were funded by HDFC and one from Matthew Baker, one of the earlier flying scholarship recipients who now fly with Cathay Pacific. The three scholarship winners are Max Pursehouse, Bowen Hansen and Ben Tree. We wish them a brilliant start to their aviation dreams!

Pilot Proficiency Day Also known as HDFC's Monthly Flying Competition, PPDs are help every month as a

cost effective way for all the pilots to keep their currency. On PPDs, the pilots practise emergency procedures such as Forced Landings. They are always up for a challenge with coordinated flying exercises such as River Bash up the Maria River at 600’ as well as Spot Landing exercises with and without the use of flaps. By doing these exercises consistently, the pilots are kept very confident and proficient with their flying. Combined with mentoring guidance from either Bruce Dunlop or Ray Lind as air judges, pilots continue to improve their flying skills gaining currency, confidence, increase safety procedures and build comradeship.

HDFC is well-known in the community for their strong camaraderie. This is due to the range of social and flying activities which pilots, their families, friends and visiting pilots participate in. For the last 65 years, HDFC has grown from a humble little flying club to producing top-notch pilots.

Not forgetting Brilliant Acknowledgements to... Kudos to HDFC's team of flying instructors Mike Bullock, Steve

Smith, Bruce Dunlop, Rod Hall, David Massey, Ray Lind and Doug Toppazzini who joined this year. HDFC also thanks their Engineers Doug Toppazzini and Jon Bown for doing a sterling job as outstanding engineers. HDFC Committee has always been working hard behind the scenes to make this a safe and efficient flying school. Led by the exceptional Rod Davison as well as very clever marketing by Veronica Lind, HDFC is reaching out to the community and keeping everyone up to date with their regular Enews.

Just like a properly functioning plane, everyone has an important part to play in keeping HDFC growing strong and soaring. From committee members to volunteers and the community that has been so supportive and participative, HDFC is where it is today because of a communal effort!
