Program Sophie Streleoff Kootenay Area Program Advisor kootenayareaprogramadviser@gmail.com I can answer any questions Guiders may have to the program, may it be the program book, challenges, ideas or activities. As well I can help Guiders come up with ideas and activities for unit meetings, special occasions or enrollments. Really I am here to help Guiders with anything that is program related (which is almost anything!!)
Challenges Ocean Aware Challenge This ocean literacy challenge is a joint venture of Ocean Networks Canada and the BC Program Committee. It is based on seven principles, with several activities for each principle. For more information: bc-girlguides.org/Documents/BC/program/OceanAware.pdf

Outdoor Activity Leadership There could be two separate forms involved in receiving OAL accreditation. TR.1 Training Equivalency Form - The Guider seeking equivalency will list the modules she feels she has completed and explains how her previous experience is equivalent to the learning objectives. It will then be signed by an Area Training Adviser, an Area Commissioner or her designate and submitted for inputting into iMIS. TR.10 OAL Tracking form - This form is used to track completion of OAL trainings and camping experience. The Guider lists the modules completed, the dates, including the nights in a tent. She also completes the camping log. Once the requirements for the Go Camping pin are satisfied, she sends the form to her Camping Adviser or Mentor who arranges for this to be recorded into iMIS and for the Go Camping Pin to be awarded.
Spirit of Adventure Rendezvous SOAR 2014 took place in Enderby from 19-26 July. You can see photos and videos here: soarbc.com/photos-video/

Our Cabana Friendship Session Three Rangers from the Boundary Guiding Unit and one from Grand Forks were joined by two Pathfinders from Vancouver and two Guiders for an adventure in Mexico. It started in Mexico City with a tour of the churches and then it was off to tour the Sun and Moon Aztec pyramids. This was a stunning site for a surprise ceremony presenting Kimberleigh Sheremeto with her Canada Cord and Kim Faminoff and Thao Atkinson with their Chief Commissioner’s Bronze Award. Then it was off to Our Cabana with five GSUSA members from Texas and 29 members of Girlguiding UK from Scotland. After one night at the World Centre, the girls joined 100 Rangers from Guias De Mexico at the International Camp at Meztitla. The girls went caving, tackled the assault course, went abseiling or walked to Tepoztlan for shopping in the market and exploring. On the last night, the girls entertained the other campers with a hobby horse version of the musical ride. After a night at Our Cabana, the travellers visited Taxco, Mexico’s silver city. After a Mexican fiesta at the world centre, the Canadians said good bye to their new American and Scottish friends and spent a night in Mexico City touring the markets and eating one last Mexican meal before flying home.

Cookies! Cookies! Cookies! Jennifer O'Donnell Area Treasurer and Area Cookie Advisor I can help you if you have any questions about registration fees or cookies. I collect all the cookie and sales aid (envelopes and posters) orders and place them with province twice per year. I can also answer any questions you may have about the area budget and financial position. District treasurers can contact me if they have any questions about anything related to their positions. I have worked with districts to amalgamate unit accounts and how best to handle the record keeping.
Public Relations Sue Fielding Kootenay Area PR Adviser I have been a Guider for 30 years plus 5 years as a girl member, 11 years in Canada and 19 in the UK. I have been a Unit Guider, District Commissioner and Area Membership Adviser. Currently I am a Guider with Boundary Guiding, a multi-branch unit in Midway.
Membership Vacancy: Kootenay Area is looking for someone passionate about Guiding. The Membership Adviser works with our DCs to help them identify and remove barriers to membership. There is training, mentoring and ongoing support for the incumbent. Join the enthusiastic team that is your area council! Contact Maryann for more information: kootenayarea@gmail.com
Safe Guide and Code of Conduct SafeGuide training needs to be done within 4 months of becoming a member - if an in-person training is not available please ask your District Commissioner about taking it online. Each member should check their own iMIS profile (in Memberzone at my iMIS), please confirm that you have checked off the box that says that you have read and agree to abide by the Girl Guide Code of Conduct.
Welcome! It is important that when a girl is registered online, and added to the unit roster, that somebody from the unit (or District) contact the parents. Welcome them and give them whatever information they need including a contact within the unit. The easiest way to do this is to have a prepared, consistent email that goes out every time you receive notification of a girl added to your unit.
