Bipolar Sunshine It’s not often in the music industry that artists get a second bite of the cherry but for Adio Marchant aka Bipolar Sunshine he’s hoping for a new and exciting challenge with his latest project. Originally from Chorlton in Manchester, he rose to fame as the front man of Indie Ska band Kid British in 2OO7. After supporting The Specials, UB4O and The Stone Roses amongst others, the band decided to call time on a very successful 5 year career, much to the dismay of their loyal fans. But Adio is back under the name Bipolar Sunshine and has a renewed vigour to make music..

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME BIPOLAR SUNSHINE? I wanted a name than made no sense but eventually will like Coldplay and Artic Monkeys. They make no sense at first but after a while they do...

WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES WITHIN YOUR NEW MUSIC? Each songs varies but I like characters like Kanye , Morrissey, Prince - guys with flair and can write great tunes.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO TAKE THIS NEW MUSICAL DIRECTION AFTER KID BRITISH? I thought it was time for a change I get bored easily and wanted to do something new as I was losing the live for music and wanted to try something different.

WHAT RITE

WAS MUSIC

YOUR FAVOUGROWING UP?

I listened to a lot of reggae and the carpenters - well that’s what my mum played.

WHAT WANT

TO

MAKES MAKE

YOU MUSIC?

The fascination of the different interpretation people have of lyrics that you wrote. Music is for every emotion that’s why I love it

WHAT’S THE MOST FUN YOU’VE HAD WHILST BEING A MUSICIAN? Had some mad times, I can remember getting so high that I stayed on the floor of a hotel for 20 minutes just laughin my head off I wanted to stop but just couldn’t .. Plenty more but that’s a gooden ha.

I can remember getting so high that I stayed on the floor of a hotel for half an hour just laughin my head off I wanted to stop but just couldn’t...

11 WHAT IS THE MOST UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT WHILST BEING A MUSICIAN? Probably playing Heaton Park that was crazy!

DO YOU PREFER LARGER VENUES OR THE SMALLER ONES? Larger because you can’t see people... at smaller venues you can see people ad you wanna dash you drink at their heads ha

ARE ANY OF THE OTHER GUYS FROM KID BRITISH TAKING A NEW MUSICAL DIRECTION LIKE YOU? Yeah all of us are writing so watch out for solo projects from all of them.

iF YOU HAD TO LISTEN TO ONE BAND OR ARTIST FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WHO WOULD IT BE? Prince.

HAVE YOU GOT ANY EMBARRASSING SONGS ON YOUR IPOD OR GUILTY PLEASURES?? I listen to so much music erm guilty pleasure would have to be the Girls Aloud - Promise I made tune ... I love that shit!

YOU HAVE A REALLY COOL SENSE OF STYLE! HAVE YOU ANY FASHION INFLUENCES OR ANY FAVOURITE DESIGNERS/ ICONS? Why thank you erm love the vintage look with a pair of John Lennon style glasses. Also my friend Shai Spooner is a stylist so I watch a lot of stuff he gets as he knows; Oswald Boteng has great style my two friends Simeon Mclean and Ola Mupape have good style so I steal from them as well haha.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM BIPOLAR SUNSHINE IN THE NEAR FUTURE? ANY SECRETS?? Well this year should be interesting looking to put out along music tour and just enjoy making music and hopefully feature on other peoples tracks. No secrets just gunna go for it as I have nothing to lose!

‘We Are Infinite’ By Sophie Barrott

‘We are Infinite’ is a series inspired by bohemian culture, and my ongoing interest in different realms of perception. Each creation was unexpected, an experiment gone awry. I became interested in realms of focus, trance and energy and how this could be portrayed in my work. The series is about fleeting beauty, resounding sadness, fading memories and time slipping away.

I’m an artist because there’s nothing else I’d rather do. I’m fascinated by the world around me and completely immersed in my own productive creative lifestyle. Everything I create has been sparked by a moment in my life, a sudden realisation or happening. Nothing starts the way I expect it to. Ideas sneak up on me as a welcome surprise, an exciting new challenge. Ideas stem from everything, from the little nuances, the things I experience, to that quote or image that’s been stuck in my head for days. They cry out to be realised, to be put on paper, on film, wherever they may land. My work evolves along with me. When my perception of this ever-changing world is renewed, so is my practice. I never know where I’m going to end up, and it’s the most exciting thing. My work spans from site specific installation, ‘happenings’, to delicate realism. My imagery is soaked in intensity, bright mesmeric hues and melancholy figure expression as a response to an overwhelming

vision of sights and sounds. Although not always my chosen medium, film always deeply influences my work, and is at the core of my understanding of visual expression. I wanted to explore different sides to the beautiful inspirational women that I portray, showing the unseen and the different speculative perceptions beyond ordinary sight. It’s about the infinite and the limitless, alternate realities and the other versions of ourselves. www.sophiebarrott.co.uk

The Good Samaritan As children, we are information saturated and repeatedly reminded from an early age to further our own development, at the expense of others. Since the stone age, human beings’ primal instinct is one of survival and follows the notion of ‘dog eat dog’. But throughout history there are conflicting examples of peace and love; two simple words that form the root of human creation and when they are put into practice, they can bring light to the bleakest of events. The miracle of childbirth is a juxtaposition of such pain for mothers but out of the sweat, blood, tears and hours of struggle comes such joy. The first moments gazing into the eyes of a child sum up the true meaning of peace and love. Peace and love are often embodied by various symbols and acts. One of the earliest recognised symbols could be that of the dove carrying the olive branch, a sign of peace and God’s love for mankind. Acts of peace and love are typified by a throng of people coming together for a common cause. The reknowned mural in Brixton after the riots in the 1980’s is one example of this, more recently; a twitter campaign urged peopled to ‘clean up Clapham’ after several nights of rioting in 2011. Hundreds turned up with brushes, bin bags and cleaning tools and a community united against the rioters and the havoc that had been wreaked. What was seen nationally on television was people who once thought of each other as enemies, shaking hands and spreading love through their community.

During the First World War, British and German troops in the trenches called truce on Christmas day and played a game of football with each other. A basic human outreach of empathy during the ultimate season of peace and love. In the modern equivalent, the Gaza strip, there appears to be little evidence of peace and love and we have to hope they still have a place or we will lose who we are as a civilisation. If you switch on any news channel you will be bombarded by horrific images of injustice and human cruelty, in order to survive as a people we must look to the past and the rare gems of humanity which hold us all together. We are taught not to rock the boat, to avoid confrontation and butting our noses into others business, with this we have lost the idea of ‘the good samaritan’; someone who looks out for others for purely unselfish reasons. Peace and love, throughout history, interlink and when one isn’t present it doesn’t work. They co-exist with each other in a dynamic way. The stereotypical concept of peace and love is often attributed to the hippie movement of the late 60’s/early 70’s. The ‘Summer of Love’ and an almost naive idea of how to conduct ones self is often looked down upon in the cynical world in which we currently live, we should draw from this calm and caring mentality and try to apply it to our modern lives. Perhaps we should do as those in the ‘Summer of Love’ and make love not war.
