Putting our suburbs first: Lord Mayor

Budget Snapshot

Our suburbs are the places we spend most of our time living, working, relaxing and making the most of Brisbane’s fantastic lifestyle. We’re continuing to make them even better through our Suburbs First Guarantee, where more than 80% of what we do will continue to be directed towards our suburbs. Suburbs First means investing in improving our 5000 kilometre-long footpath network and connecting our suburbs through road projects including the Moggill Road Corridor Upgrade in the west, the Beams Road upgrade in the north and the Gardner Road improvement in the south.

BETTER SUBURBS $3.4 Billion

It means delivering our Sun Safe Suburban Playgrounds program, new parks for growing suburbs like Pallara and Rochedale, and more support for our sports clubs that are the backbone of our community. It also means planning for the future by delivering the fully electric, turn-up-and-go Brisbane Metro, the Kangaroo Point and Breakfast Creek green bridges and Victoria Park / Baramabin’s transformation. While we focus on rebuilding after the devastating February floods, my guarantee is we will continue to invest record amounts in our suburbs to deliver for Brisbane’s 1.2 million residents.

Adrian Schrinner, LORD MAYOR

REBUILD & RECOVER $505 Million

BETTER TRANSPORT $1.7 Billion

More shade sails on the way for Brisbane’s parks

Budget: $3.4 billion for better suburbs Safer roads and footpaths, vibrant outdoor spaces, and more ways to keep our city clean and green will help preserve the Brisbane lifestyle we know and love. $299 million will go towards improving safety and tackling congestion on roads and footpaths, including resurfacing 399 streets, upgrading 20 intersections and completing 72 road projects. More than $1.8 million has been dedicated to continuing the suburban tree planting program, and $39.6 million will help restore and manage the city’s natural assets to preserve habitat and wildlife corridors. $16.1 million will be invested in Murarrie Recreation Reserve to transform it into a world-class cycling complex in the lead-up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We’ll continue to invest $3 million in the Lord Mayor’s Better Suburbs Grants and $1.6 million on the Community and Sports Partnership Program. $10.3 million to expand Council’s green and food waste recycling service.

LONG-TERM CITY-SHAPING PROJECTS Brisbane Metro: $288.5 million Green Bridges Program: $174.2 million Victoria Park / Barrambin: $13.8 million Oxley Creek Transformation Project: $10.5 million Better Roads for Brisbane Program, including Moggill Road Corridor Upgrade and Beams Road: $148 million We’re injecting $10 million over the next three years to make sure all of Council’s 1072 playgrounds are sun safe. The accelerated program will see 50 shade sails installed in the next 12 months at playgrounds across Brisbane. The shade sails will help keep playground equipment cool while making our parks safer for kids to play, learn and grow. We know parks and playgrounds are loved and valued, which is why we’ve dedicated more than $580.2 million to clean and green initiatives in this year’s Budget. This includes $106 million for new parks and enhancements, including scooter tracks and ninja courses.

All aboard our new double-decker CityCat Stay comfortable and cool as you experience Brisbane’s iconic river on the new double-decker CityCat, Mooroolbin II – the first Generation 4 CityCat to trial upper-deck shade sails. Continuing Council’s tradition of naming vessels after Indigenous place names, Mooroolbin translates to ‘Hamilton sandbank’. Construction of CityCat 26 was completed entirely in Murarrie by local company Aus Ships Pty Ltd. In this financial year, Council will complete the construction of two new double-decker CityCats, while investing $18 million on upgrading ferry terminals and continuing the free CityHopper inner-city ferry service.

South Bank Parklands celebrates 30 years

This year marks 30 years since thousands flocked to South Bank Parklands for the opening of the city’s inner-city oasis. @robweb_1

Previously home to the hugely successful Expo 88, the site was transformed into the riverside precinct that’s become one of Brisbane’s most-loved destinations. Open 365 days a year, South Bank’s facilities include Streets Beach and surrounding pools, playgrounds, riverside and rainforest walking tracks, licensed picnic areas and a piazza. It’s also home to a year-round calendar of events and plenty of eateries, including the award-winning River Quay.
