COMPOST REBATE HELPING RESIDENTS RECYCLE: LORD MAYOR

We’re committed to ensuring Brisbane remains clean, green and sustainable. That’s why we introduced a rebate of up to $70 for Brisbane residents who purchase home composting equipment. About 11,500 residents have received the rebate and I’m encouraging more to take advantage of this offer.

Composting your food scraps not only reduces your personal waste and greenhouse gas emissions but provides nutrient-rich compost for your garden or house plants. We’ve also waived the establishment fee for green waste recycling bins, which are an easy way for residents to dispose of lawn clippings and leaves. Council uses this green waste to make mulch, helping Brisbane remain clean and green.

Brisbane’s vulnerable supported through Charitable Trust

The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust is digging in to support 21 Brisbane charities thanks to its March General Grant Round.

Charity Dig In received support to provide nutritious meals to people experiencing food insecurity. The organisation has served more than 80,000 meals.

Dig In found traditional street meal services are not always suitable for some food-insecure groups such as children and women experiencing domestic violence. In response, they developed a hot food vending machine.

The charity provides one free meal per day via individual pin codes and is accessible 24/7.

The Trust is proud to support small innovative projects that have an enormous impact on Brisbane residents. For more information visit lmct.org.au

Creating a city of neighbourhoods

Council’s Village Precinct Projects (VPPs) are helping to create a city of neighbourhoods by breathing new life into the suburbs. VPPs create liveable places with vibrant neighbourhood centres for the local community to enjoy.

The VPPs include a variety of public space improvements such as:

Š footpath upgrades with kerb and ramp crossing improvement

Š tree planting to improve the visual landscape and provide shade

Š new garden beds and more ground cover plants

Š new Council street furniture

Š public art and lighting.

For further information and updates on each of the VPP’s timelines and completion dates, visit Council’s website and search ‘Village Precinct Projects’.

Brisbane’s Sustainable Growth Strategy

Brisbane is Australia’s fastest growing capital and our new housing and homelessness strategy will help ensure Brisbane can meet housing demand while preserving character and greenspace.

The strategy draws on outcomes from the Queensland Housing Summit held in October 2022 where four key priorities have been identified including housing supply, housing diversity, affordability and choice.

Council will continue working to ensure all residents have access to safe, secure, affordable, well-designed and conveniently located housing and support programs for people experiencing or at-risk of homelessness.

THOUSANDS GET TO SCHOOL SAFELY

Thousands of primary school students are walking or riding to school this year thanks to our Active School Travel (AST) program. The free initiative encourages healthier students, greater road safety and reduced traffic outside schools. Winners for the 2022 AST program included Craigslea State School in Chermside West and Wishart State School.

BE BUSHFIRE-READY

Batteries don’t belong in bins

We all have items in our homes that use batteries but do you know how to safely dispose of them?

Batteries don’t belong in household bins because they can cause fires. Used and unwanted batteries should be disposed of for free at the following locations:

Š Battery World stores for car, boat and motorcycle batteries

Š B-cycle drop-off points in participating retail locations including Aldi, Woolworths, Officeworks and Bunnings stores

Š Council’s resource recovery centres accept household batteries (sizes AAA-D), lithium and rechargeable batteries (e-bikes, e-scooters, rechargeable tools) and lead-acid car batteries.

Recycling your batteries means valuable resources and precious metals are reused and turned into new batteries or used in other industries.

Search ‘E-waste in Brisbane’ on our website for more information.

With bushfire season beginning in July, it’s time to clear gutters of debris. Also, move flammable items away from the house like woodpiles, mulch and LPG cylinders. Fire can occur at any time so be sure to trim branches, prepare an evacuation plan and update your Bushfire Survival Plan. For more information, phone Council on 3403 8888.

ZILLMERE COMMUNITY HALL

The upgrade of Zillmere Community Hall is underway and set to re-open its doors by 30 June. It features a new fully accessible kitchen and air conditioning system. Council worked with the Zillmere and District Senior Citizens Club to protect the building’s history and make sure upgrades are fit for purpose.

Brisbane Metro tunnels under Adelaide Street

Did you know Council has been tunnelling beneath Adelaide Street 24 hours a day, seven days a week? It’s being delivered as part of the Brisbane Metro project. The 225 metre underground tunnel will provide a dedicated connection to our busways for bus and metro services.

As part of Brisbane Metro, 1.7km of streetscape along Adelaide Street, between North Quay and Edward Street, will be revitalised.

To learn more about the project, visit the Brisbane Metro Information Centre at 63 Adelaide Street from 10.30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Scan the QR code to see the progress our team is making underground!

Free workshops for budding mountain bikers

Whether it’s taking on trails at Mt Coot-tha or having fun in the park, mountain bike riding is a great way to experience Brisbane’s outdoors and get active.

FIXING DANGEROUS INTERSECTIONS

Brisbane roads are now safer thanks to completed construction at two black spot intersections.

In Forest Lake, we’ve improved the overall operation of the Forest Lake Boulevard and Rudyard Street intersection by installing new traffic lights with pedestrian crossing facilities. This will improve connectivity for people walking and riding through the area.

We’ve also upgraded the existing traffic lights with new lanterns and dedicated right-turn pockets at Hamilton Road and Bilsen Road intersection at Wavell Heights.

These upgrades are part of four Council projects completed this financial year as part of the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.

For more information, search ‘road and intersection projects’ on our website.

We are running free workshops on the grassy slopes of Victoria Park to help aspiring off-road riders learn new skills and gain confidence on their bikes. The courses will prepare young riders to tackle tough terrain by teaching skills such as cornering, braking, gear changing and taking on uphill climbs and dips.

This workshop is one of many free bike skills workshops for children, including BMX and learn to ride.

Check out cyclingbrisbane. com.au/events to register.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know since 2020, Council has completed 30 intersection upgrades, making our roads safer for the community.
