Time to par-tee at new golf club: Lord Mayor

Brisbane’s first new public golf course in 70 years has been opened to residents and visitors.

The Minnippi Golf Course in Brisbane’s south-east was designed with sustainability in mind, with more than 75,000 native trees and shrubs planted, helping keep Brisbane clean and green.

Transformed from a former landfill site, the 125 hectare, 18-hole public course and driving range requires no membership and is open for all ages to enjoy.

The facility is more than just a golf course – it is a family-friendly destination that offers live music, food trucks and activities for the whole family. The course is another example of Council helping to make Brisbane even better!

Safe and sustainable roads

A trial of crumbed rubber asphalt is underway across Brisbane, which incorporates recycled rubber from old car and truck tyres into the bitumen.

Council is prioritising road resurfacing and pothole repairs, as well as looking into how we can make roads more durable and sustainable.

The crumbed rubber asphalt can extend the life of the road for up to a decade longer than conventional bitumen.

It also increases recycling as part of a more circular economy.

Wear and tear is inevitable on our roads, but with your help we can respond quickly and keep roads safe.

If you see a pothole or road damage, report it by contacting Council at our 24/7 Call Centre on 3403 8888 or visit brisbane.qld.gov.au

10 years of SAMs

Brisbane’s Speed Awareness Monitors (SAMs) program is celebrating 10 years of making our suburban streets safer.

Brisbane City Council first implemented the rotating SAMs concept in 2013, with the first monitor still standing in Alderley today.

The program has since grown to 183 SAMs rotating across 919 locations and 83 permanent SAMs near schools.

SAMs help to increase drivers’ awareness of their speed and encourage them to travel safely on our roads by adhering to the speed limit, keeping SAMs smiling.

The initiative has celebrated two Road Safety Awards from the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Queensland (IPWEAQ) and recorded more than one billion motorists passing by SAMs. To find out more about SAMs, visit Council’s website and search ‘Speed Awareness Monitors’.

Green Bridges progressing

The Kangaroo Point Green Bridge is taking shape!

All bridge foundations and piers are now complete, and the tower crane has started work on installing the 83 metre mast in the middle of the Brisbane River.

Free City and Spring Hill loop buses

Did you know Council’s free, fully-electric, hop-on and hop-off buses connect you to key destinations around the inner-city and Spring Hill?

The free City Loop is a great way to visit iconic Brisbane destinations including Riverside, Botanic Gardens, Queen Street Mall, City Hall and more.

The Spring Hill Loop connects you to important destinations including Post Office Square, St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, Brisbane Private Hospital and Central Station. Spring Hill services run approximately every 10 minutes during peak times and every 20 minutes off-peak. Both of these free services are available from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Next time you’re in the City or Spring Hill, why not get on board?

The mast will sit atop the eye-catching, flower-shaped main pier, which was completed in September and involved 140 tonnes of steel in its construction.

Downstream at the Breakfast Creek Green Bridge, the 175 metre Lores Bonney Riverwalk extension is complete and the preassembled 80 metre arch bridge is on track to be installed later this year.

Head to Council’s website to learn more about our Green Bridges.

Biketober is back! You can join the free challenge by riding your bike and encouraging others to ride too. Check out cyclingbrisbane.com.au for more information!
