Signs show Brisbane is better prepared for severe weather: Lord Mayor
We’re rolling out new automated flood warning signs in Brisbane suburbs. I recently announced a dozen new sign locations. More will follow.
Too many motorists are still trying to drive through flooded roads or finding themselves unwittingly in dangerous situations. These LED-backed signs will switch on automatically when water rises and can be monitored remotely.
Along with all the post-flood work that’s occurred on our roads and in our parks, there’s also plenty of things happening beneath the surface. We’ve completed inspections on more than 8000 open drains and have inspected and cleaned more than 300 kilometres of drains in floodimpacted areas.
Finally, I want to thank the thousands of residents who have signed up to receive Brisbane Severe Weather Alerts. These alerts are an important way of ensuring your household is prepared. There’s still time to sign up and get in the draw to win a range of prizes, including a deluxe family getaway to Tangalooma Resort.
We can’t prevent flooding in Brisbane but we can be better prepared.
Time to make a splash
Council’s 22 pools are open for the summer season. From waterplay drop buckets and lily pads to new kiosks, there’s plenty to keep you cool as the mercury rises.
This year, we’ve upgraded pools in Chermside, Paddington and Sandgate, with Newmarket Pool due to be finished by the end of the year.
Our Active and Healthy program also offers a variety of fun pool activities, including aqua Zumba and aqua yoga.
Remember to keep an eye on young children when visiting Council pools and to always ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’.

Help shape Brisbane’s New Bus Network
Brisbane is growing, and so is our bus network. We’re moving towards a new era of connected travel by investing in high-frequency, turn-upand-go services to better connect our suburbs and the city with key destinations.
We want you to have your say and be part of shaping Brisbane’s public transport future. You can share your feedback by:
talking to a member of our team at one of our community information sessions
using our interactive network map to see what the changes mean for you and sharing your feedback via the online survey
playing The Brisbane Metro Game – a fun interactive way to learn how Brisbane Metro will help evolve our bus network.
Tackling black spots for safer roads
We’re improving safety for all road users at four intersections across Brisbane, as part of the federally funded 2022-23 Black Spot Program.
Works are underway to improve visibility for motorists and control turning movements at the Rosemary Street and Biota Street intersection in Inala, while works to upgrade the signals and provide dedicated rightturn pockets at the Hamilton Road and Bilsen Road intersection in Wavell Heights will start in late 2022.
Further black spot projects will take place in Brisbane City, at the Adelaide Street and Creek Street intersection, and in Forest Lake, at the Forest Lake Boulevard and Rudyard Street intersection.

5 tips to boost your recycling
National Recycling Week (7-13 November) is the perfect time to refresh your recycling habits. Give recycling your best shot with these top tips.
1. Upgrade for free: Upgrade to a larger recycling bin for free (Council has waived the $30 fee), making it easier to recycle more each fortnight.
2. Recycle well: Know what you can and can’t recycle. Clothes, mats and rugs can’t be recycled in your yellow-lid bin and if in good condition, are better donated to a thrift or charity store instead.
3. Handy hints: Download Council’s free Brisbane Bin and Recycling app and make sure you’re putting the right thing in the right bin.
4. Loosen up: Plastic bags can’t be opened at our recycling facility, so place recycling loose in your yellow-lid bin.
5. No need to rinse: Rinsing your recycling does help reduce odours but it isn’t necessary. If items are empty of food and liquid, they can usually be put straight into your recycling bin.
GET ON THE GARAGE SALE TRAIL
Give new life to pre-loved items and turn your stash into cash on 12-13 and 19-20 November. Visit garagesaletrail.com.au to register your garage sale or to shop the trail.
Explore Skylore at the Planetarium
Walk the Display Zone at the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and discover Skylore: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Astronomy. The Australian-first Indigenous astronomy exhibition showcases the knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders.
As the world’s oldest astronomers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have looked to the stars for tens of thousands of years. The sky is a map of wisdom and knowledge that, like the oral tradition of sharing information, continues to be passed down to younger generations.
The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is located within the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha and is open from 9am-4pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Visit our website for more information.
Save money by cutting down on food waste
Reduce your food waste and save money on your grocery bill with these three easy-tofollow steps.
Prevent: Take a moment to plan meals using simple recipes, buy only what you need, keep portion sizes in check and store food correctly.
Reuse: Eating leftovers could save you up to $364 a year. Why not make Thursday night leftovers night?
Recycle: Make the most of food scraps by composting.
Visit our website to find more tips to help reduce food waste and save money.
Reducing food waste isn’t limited to households. Through Council’s sponsorship, OzHarvest rescues surplus food from businesses and delivers it to charities, helping feed people in need. Since 2019, Council has helped put three food rescue vans on the roads to help reduce food waste that would otherwise have been sent to landfill.
