New era of public transport: Lord Mayor The recent months have been incredibly tough and Brisbane’s recovery from our biggest-ever rain event is going to take time. While this has been my focus, it’s great to see progress on projects like Brisbane Metro, which will revolutionise public transport for decades to come. Brisbane Metro is considered such an important initiative that all levels of government are now on board supporting it.

The project passed another major milestone recently with the first Brisbane Metro pilot vehicle – the first of its kind in Australia – starting local testing. This fully-electric vehicle will have capacity for up to 170 passengers who will travel in style with next-stop displays and panoramic windows.
Immerse yourself in a display of luminous art installations by visiting Botanica: Contemporary Art Outside at the City Botanic Gardens this month.
Brisbane Metro will service 18 stations from Eight Mile Plains to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and simplifies travel through turn-up-and-go services, 24/7 on weekends.
The free outdoor art exhibition is open daily from 5-10pm until Sunday 29 May.
Our city is growing fast and Brisbane Metro will help ensure we cater for that growth. Expect to jump on board in 2024.
Artworks span a range of styles, from a projection of a flying Persian-style carpet to an augmented reality sculpture bringing lost Queensland flora back to life. Learn more about the artworks through tours and talks or celebrate a night out with family and friends. There’s music, food trucks and an outdoor bar on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5pm.

The roundabout central island at the Boundary Road and Formation Street intersection in Wacol has been widened – increasing the turning movement for vehicles entering the roundabout and slowing down speed through the intersection.

BRISBANE’S NEW ERA OF CONNECTED TRANSPORT
Flash charging at end of route
Brisbane Metro’s pilot vehicle has arrived for testing throughout 2022 and into 2023. It’s the first of the 60 high-capacity, highfrequency Brisbane Metro vehicles Council will introduce – the first of their kind in Australia. The Brisbane Metro has many light rail features but can travel on existing infrastructure instead of needing tracks, overhead wires and poles. Flash charging systems are used to charge the Brisbane Metro at end of route locations in under six minutes and they emit zero tailpipe emissions. Flash charging points will be installed at four end of route locations and are 85 times faster than at-home electric vehicle charging systems. Greenlight for Breakfast Creek Green Bridge Construction of the Breakfast Creek Green Bridge will soon be underway after a Brisbane-based contractor, Georgiou Brady Joint Venture, was the successful candidate to deliver the exciting new transport link. The bridge will feature: an 80-metre arch bridge span across Breakfast Creek a 175-metre extension of the Lores Bonney Riverwalk from Cameron Rocks Reserve dedicated pathways for pedestrians and cyclists viewpoints of Brisbane River and Newstead House a landing point in Newstead Park with new signage, rest areas and drinking fountains integrated pathways and landscaping within Newstead Park and Cameron Rocks Reserve a new two-way on-road cycle path from the bridge landing at Newstead Park, along Breakfast Creek Road and Newstead Avenue, through to Newstead Terrace at Halford Street

Brisbane’s favourite sustainable living festival, Council’s Green Heart Fair will return on Sunday 29 May at a brand-new location: Victoria Park / Barrambin. Learn how to go green while reconnecting with nature on 64 hectares of open space and rolling hills. The free, family and dogfriendly event will feature more than 120 sustainability experts sharing practical tips to help you live an eco-friendly life. There will also be a free native plants giveaway, artisan markets, food trucks and live shows by dirtgirlworld and the Urban Utilities Water Warriors. This year’s event will feature a hub dedicated to flood resilience. It will showcase easy and cost-effective ways to help households withstand severe weather. Celebrating Brisbane’s rich cultural legacy From the annual Indigenous Art Program (see page 7) to Queen Street Mall’s weekly Gathering performances, Council continues to recognise the achievements and rich cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Brisbane. From 3–10 July, we’ll celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures with a program of NAIDOC Week events, honouring this year’s theme of ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’. July is also Black History Month, so keep an eye out for family fun days, children’s storytime, cultural performances, movie screenings, art exhibitions and more. Contact-free crossing Touchless and sensor-activated pedestrian buttons are being trialled at two intersections in Herston. The technology will improve accessibility for people with disability and increase hygiene. Off-road cycling to ramp-up in Brisbane New off-road cycling facilities are set to give riders even more opportunities to explore Brisbane’s natural beauty. Council’s Off-Road Cycling Strategy aims to meet the needs of the rapidly growing off-road cycling community while protecting our natural environment. The strategy will guide future investment in off-road cycling facilities within bushland reserves and parks – introducing dirt jumps, skill tracks and single trails, as well as improving existing trails and routes.
