To infinity and beyond at the Planetarium

Making way for Brisbane Metro Major construction is starting at North Quay in the CBD as part of the Brisbane Metro project, which is set to revolutionise public transport in our city. A new tunnel under Adelaide Street will provide a dedicated connection for Brisbane Metro and bus services from North Quay to King George Square station, freeing up congestion bottlenecks in the city. During works, there will be traffic changes to the road network around North Quay. For more information, visit Council’s website. Be inspired to become a waste warrior and help reduce the 6000 kilograms of clothing sent to landfill every 10 minutes in Australia, as well as the tonnes of furniture and children’s toys. Your essential guide to kerbside collection Need to get rid of damaged furniture or rusty exercise equipment? Council’s pick-up teams are sweeping across Brisbane to collect large unwanted household items. If you have something to dispose of, place items on the kerbside in front of your home the weekend before your suburb’s scheduled collection starts. All items must be on the kerb by 6am at the start of the collection period. Illegal dumping fines may apply for items left in public areas outside the designated collection period.

Consider the environment before putting your items out on the kerb – could they be recycled or donated? You can donate quality items to Council’s Treasure Troves by taking them to your local Resource Recovery Centre. This will reduce waste going to landfill, and support the Endeavour Foundation.

UPDATE

reen Bridges Council’s Green Bridges Program has hit exciting milestones. The final design for the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge has been revealed and features new and unique dining options, including an above‑water restaurant and a new riverside cafe at the city landing plaza. Other smaller food outlets are proposed at viewing platforms along the 460-metre length of the bridge. Meanwhile, the final design for the Breakfast Creek Green Bridge has been formally lodged for approval. A contract is expected to be awarded by the end of the year to build the bridge connecting Brisbane’s northern suburbs with the CBD. Explore Brisbane’s jacaranda hotspots While our river city is pretty all year round, its subtropical beauty really blooms in spring. Here are some of the top spots to see Brisbane’s jacarandas: New Farm Park - home to 146 jacaranda trees Wilson Outlook, New Farm

Top tips for a perfect lawn Did you know Council maintains 73,255 hectares of grass across the city? That’s the equivalent of 88,290 NRL fields! Keep your lawn greener in Brisbane’s subtropical climate with tips from our gardeners.

Consider how much sun or shade your yard gets and the soil profile when choosing the lawn species. Are there areas that don’t get enough sun? Trim overhanging trees throwing too much shade, where possible. Deep-water the lawn in the warmer months to strengthen roots. Rake away dead leaves and punch holes in the grass to help water reach the roots. Use a slow-release fertiliser and gypsum (calcium sulfate) ideally three to four times a year. Generally, couch varieties like a shorter haircut of 20-30 mm and buffalos like a longer ‘do of up to 50 mm. Spot a pest? Speak to a professional at your local hardware store and start treatment right away.

Celebrating Brisbane seniors October is Queensland Seniors Month, the perfect time to honour the grandparents, seniors and elders in our lives. Council recognises the important contribution seniors make to our city and has a range of programs to support their participation in our community.

GET ACTIVE AND HEALTHY Our Growing Older Living Dangerously (GOLD) program is designed to help you improve fitness, feel healthier, learn new skills and make new friends. Whether it’s kayaking, cooking or kitesurfing, have fun at our free and low-cost events. GOLD ‘n’ Kids activities are specially designed for seniors and children to do together. The 50 Plus Centre, located on the basement level of City Hall, offers a variety of low-cost activities for seniors and pensioners over 50. Search ‘GOLD’ or ‘50 Plus Centre’ on our website to find out what’s on, or call the 50 Plus Centre on 3403 4319 between 9am-1pm, Monday to Friday.

GET OUT AND ABOUT It’s never been easier to get around Brisbane. Seniors go card and Seniors Card +go users can travel for free on Brisbane buses, CityCats and ferries from 8.30am-3.30pm and 7pm-6am weekdays, and on buses all weekend. Council Cabs is a low-cost door-to-door taxi service for residents who find it difficult to get to their local shops. To book a cab, call 3403 2227.

GET CELEBRATING The Lord Mayor’s Seniors Cabaret is a free development program giving seniors the chance to hone their creative and artistic talents. Participants work with top industry mentors in masterclasses, before performing alongside the experts in a spectacular showcase concert. INALA LIBRARY REFURBISHMENT Booklovers of all ages will enjoy the modern revamp coming to Inala Library. The refurbishment will create vibrant spaces for children and young adults, comfy seating areas and a new meeting room with audio visual equipment and kitchenette facilities. Works are due to be completed in late 2021.

Grants to help those in need The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust proudly continues to support Brisbane grassroots charitable projects and activities. The August grant round supported 43 local charities with more than $293,000. Grants support charities like Community Canteen, a not-forprofit run by volunteers to provide vital relief for people experiencing homelessness and food scarcity. If you are a small charity or know of any small charities having a big impact in our community, save the date. Applications for the Christmas grant round open on Monday 18 October. The Trust’s Christmas Appeal starts on Monday 1 November and is a great opportunity to gift the Brisbane charity community hope this Christmas. Find out more at lmct.org.au

BOONDALL WETLANDS ENVIRONMENT CENTRE, BOONDALL

Did you know the Turrbal people of north Brisbane were the first to call the land around the Boondall Wetlands home? The area was known as Cabbage Tree until the 1920s. In 1923 the name Boondall was given to the local railway station and the area adopted the same name. ‘Boondall’ is derived from an Aboriginal word thought to mean ‘crooked creek’ or refer to cunjevoi (large succulent plants that grow in wet areas).

SunPAC – Five years of arts and culture

The premier performing arts and cultural centre in Brisbane’s southern suburbs is celebrating its 5th birthday. Since opening in 2016, the Sunnybank Performing Arts and Cultural Centre (SunPAC) has staged more than 800 performances, shows and events, and welcomed more than 125,000 visitors to its 300‑seat theatre, soaring Skyview Foyer, private meeting room and alfresco green. The highlight of SunPAC’s year-round program is the free multicultural community festival, Summerfest. Join in the celebration of the diverse and talented local community on Saturday 13 November. In the late 1950s the local drive-in cinema drew visitors to Boondall. Later, the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Madonna and Pink also stopped in, performing at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre built in 1986. Today, visitors to the Boondall Wetlands can spot a diversity of wildlife, including native birds, flying foxes, possums, squirrel gliders and reptiles. You can also learn about the local environment at the Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre on Paperbark Drive.

Support our vulnerable residents Join us in supporting Brisbane residents experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity by donating non-perishable foods and toiletries for Council’s next Homeless Connect event. Homeless Connect brings together businesses and community groups to provide free services to people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. Guests have access to health care, housing and legal support, as well as personal grooming items, clothing and food. The Council initiative, which began in 2006, has helped more than 18,580 vulnerable residents. To donate, drop off non-perishable foods or toiletries at ward offices, and toiletries-only at libraries by Friday 5 November.

Blast off on a mission of discovery at the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha. Chart a course from the wonders of the Solar System back to the Big Bang in the Display Zone. Along the way, see fragments of meteorites, a replica of Neil Armstrong’s Apollo spacesuit and images from the Hubble Space Telescope. The Gallery wraps around the Cosmic Skydome projection theatre, featuring interesting facts, figures, photos and touchscreen displays of the universe and our Solar System. Shows in the Cosmic Skydome will spark the curiosity of space enthusiasts of all ages. Most shows last about half an hour and include a tour of the Brisbane evening sky.
