LIVING IN BRISBANE

September 2021 Edition: New e-bikes hit the streets | Brisbane Festival highlights | Art in the city | Win tickets to Oktoberfest

And the winner is... Brisbane! Our amazing Olympic athletes have returned home and I’m inviting all of Brisbane to come together for a Keys to the City presentation on Friday October 8 to celebrate their achievements. Featuring a parade in Queen Street Mall and presentation in King George Square, we want to warmly welcome back our local sporting heroes after what was one of Australia’s most successful Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our Olympic glory does not stop there. Our city has struck gold with the announcement of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Just like our athletes who spend years training for the Games, it’s now our job to ensure Brisbane is in peak shape in just over a decade’s time. We’re already laying the groundwork to make sure the biggest winners of the 2032 Games will be you: our residents. Projects like Brisbane Metro, our green bridges and Victoria Park transformation are underway and there will be many more gamechanging projects to come as a result of our success of securing the Games. This is another example of how Brisbane just keeps getting better. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner gets to work delivering Brisbane 2032

Be prepared for severe weather Every year, Council prepares the city for potential weather events by trimming trees, clearing creeks and conducting hazard reduction burns. Being familiar with the risks around your home or business, preparing your property and having an emergency plan in place will help to keep you and your loved ones safe. Visit brisbane.qld.gov.au/ beprepared to get advice on how to prepare your property, emergency kit and plans, and how to stay safe before, during and after severe weather. Use our ‘Home emergency checklist’ on page 7 and read about Council’s free green waste recycling drop-off days on page 5.

E-bikes and e-scooters to get you around Getting around Brisbane has become a lot cooler, now the city’s first e-bike share scheme and a new fleet of e-scooters have rolled into town. Beam Mobility and Neuron Mobility’s e-bikes mark the next chapter in Brisbane’s active transport journey after a decade of CityCycle. Whether you want to zip across the CBD between meetings, enjoy a leisurely riverfront ride or tackle the hilly route home, the new e-bikes are a fun way to give your ride a power boost without breaking a sweat. We know safety and accessibility is important to riders and non-riders, which is why Council released its first e-mobility strategy in June 2021. The strategy outlines Council policies and plans for infrastructure, as well as safety considerations for future partnerships. While the e-bikes and e-scooters are dockless, keep an eye out for designated e-mobility parking hubs to keep the footpaths clear for pedestrians. Download the relevant app to find your closest pick-up location or plan a day out on Brisbane’s network of shared paths and riverwalks.

SAFETY FIRST Wear a helmet. Know your hand signals. Ride with the flow, not against. Pay attention to your surroundings. Check your speed doesn’t exceed 25 km/h. Leave enough time to brake. Park your device in an e-mobility parking hub, where available.

Bus update: New CityGliders hit the streets One of Brisbane’s most popular bus routes has been boosted with new 18-metre high-capacity vehicles. Ten articulated buses are now operating on the Blue CityGlider route 60 service between West End and Teneriffe ferry terminal. Another eight are set to roll into action by the end of 2021. Locally made in Eagle Farm, the buses provide 50% more capacity and feature three double-door entries and USB charging points, offering a more comfortable ride and shortening queues at the bus stop. Meanwhile, we’re preparing a business case for a new Gold CityGlider service. Subject to government support, a new CityGlider would help reduce congestion and provide a high-frequency bus service between Hamilton and Woolloongabba. Park play for all ages If you’re looking for a shady park, head to Dorrington Park – or ‘The Enchanted Forest’ as it’s more commonly known. Just off Frasers Road in Ashgrove, it’s also a popular play-date and birthday party go-to. Perfect for toddler-age kids and older, Dorrington Park offers sliding, climbing and swinging play in a fairy garden-inspired setting, with concrete toadstools and oversized frogs to ignite the imagination. There’s also a skate park and the nearby Enoggera Creek bikeway, so bring the kids’ bikes and scooters for some wheely fun.

Other facilities including the learn‑to‑ride facility and multiuse games area remain open during construction, due to be completed in late 2021.

KERBSIDE COLLECTION Get ready for your next clean‑up. Visit our website and search the 2021-22 kerbside collection calendar to find out when it’s due in your suburb and what items are accepted. Remember to place items in front of your home the weekend before your collection starts.

Spring gardening tips from the experts Did you know there are flourishing community gardens at our libraries in Mitchelton, Grange and Holland Park tended by volunteers? Make the most of your garden with these handy tips from Council’s garden volunteers. Make way for new plants by weeding, mulching and removing dead flower heads. As flowers fade and some herbs naturally die off, gradually fill spaces with cosmos, salvia, gomphrena, marigold flowers and new herbs. Keep parsley going by harvesting stems from the outside of the plant, while chives and lemongrass are best cut at ground level. Get involved by volunteering at the gardens or simply pick up cuttings from the harvest, along with your books!

You probably think of the ‘Magic Mile’ when you hear “Moorooka”. The stretch of car yards on Ipswich Road is a well-known landmark, but there’s so much more to this multicultural suburb. Originally known as Cowpers Plains, then Rocky Water Holes and Rocklea East, the area became known as Moorooka by 1886. Inspiration for the name came from the Aboriginal word ‘mooroonga’, meaning ironbark. Today, the former World War II manufacturing hub and popular home for returned servicemen and African migrants retains traces of history in its streets filled with Queenslanders and workers’ cottages, as well as the high street on Beaudesert Road established in the 1920s. Due to its close proximity to the CBD, transport links, lush green spaces and authentic multicultural eateries, Moorooka remains a popular choice to call home or to explore for the day.
