YOUR GENDERED REPUBLIC Masculinity is in a maelstrom. It’s rattled these days, and it’s good that it is. Check that privilege. Act 1 of Theatre Republic digs into the societal concerns sweeping through our notions of gender. It does so with gravity, generosity and glam. Ode to Man is Emma Hall’s public farewell letter to men, sparked by a traumatic break up. She spent two years interviewing almost 100 men, including men she dated, asking them what it was to be a real man. How does she, we, deal with the answers? It’s a perfectly crafted piece of theatre, dealing with a grave subject with a light and elegant touch. Two men, two privileged white men, sit centre stage in FAG/STAG and its stand-alone companion piece, BALI. Men are often the unreliable narrators of our history, and these two plays, picking apart almost every aspect of masculinity you can imagine, show that in miniature. Whom do we believe? Rovers celebrates two women. Intrepid women. And more. The project began with a desire to reunite Roxanne McDonald and Barbara Lowing on stage after 21 years apart. It’s a road trip through memory and imagination – and through the acting profession they’ve both given so much to – and was created very much from their own stories. It’s a very generous sharing, and the all-female, fearless company that is Belloo Creative have created something to treasure. YUMMY embraces the genderfluid. It celebrates women in drag spaces, and unsettles many familiar drag and cabaret stereotypes with subversive wit, sophisticated choreography and with human

tenderness at the core. It’s glam and glorious. My recommendation? See them all. Together, they tell quite a story. David Berthold, Artistic Director

Founded in Brisbane in 2013, Belloo explores new ways of firing the imagination and connecting stories with the physical body. We created Rovers to showcase the exceptional talents of Barbara Lowing and Roxanne McDonald. Roxy and Barb have been working in theatre and film nationally and internationally for over 30 years and have wanted to do another show together for the last 20. Some sections of Rovers are taken verbatim from interviews with Barb and Roxy, some have been written from imagination, and some are created from research into Australia’s bushranging women. Stumble and soar through tales of love and women, gin and secrets, as we wind our way through 18th-century London, colonial India, a few New York speakeasies and the jungles of Peru, via sailors and barmaids, bootleggers and master distillers. For one week only the Roundhouse Theatre will be transformed into a boozy, magical little gin joint featuring songs by Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Tom Waits, Martha Wainwright, The Popes, Sia, Jessie J, and more.
