Starry eyed Born performers find their calling in community theatre
TAKE A PEEK INSIDE SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND’S PRESTIGE PROPERTIES
This week... 22
As the mother of a child who lives for her weekly drama classes, I can appreciate the allure of the stage. And while most little people who dream of Hollywood wind up in more “sensible” professions, some channel their passion into local theatre. That includes our cover star Laura Fois, one of several actors featured in Hannah Davies’ story about Brisbane’s community theatre scene (P12) – and the backstage dramas that rival the onstage action. Isn’t it time you caught a show?

07 THE CHAT
All figured out Fiona Purdon Tanya Titman had two young children when she took the gutsy decision to start her own accountancy business a decade ago. The move paid off, with the strategist having built up several businesses – which now boast a 20-strong staff and family-friendly workplaces – and being named Brisbane Business Woman of the Year in 2016. “I took a leap of faith and there were a lot of nervous moments, but thankfully my clients believed in me and backed me,’’ she says. Tanya, 47, of Chandler, was a partner in an accounting practice when she decided to start her own venture, which featured a self-funded in-house childcare centre – Brisbane’s first – to help working parents. Now Tanya is managing director of accountancy firm Consolid8, as well as offshoot business Acceler8, which provides financial education for up to 100 women a year. “When I set up Consolid8, I really appreciated how tough it is for women in the workplace. We had 15 pregnancies on staff at one stage. “I’m good at looking at businesses and saying which direction people need to head, as well as building a plan … to help clients see the potential of their business.” Tanya says assembling a strong team has been key to her success. “And I’ve empowered them to make decisions, (so) I can have that great balance which allows me to do
the school drop-offs and pick-ups most days. It’s a juggling act all the time.’’ But time with husband Jason and children Ariella, 14, Jacobie, 12, Cyana, 8, and Jorja, 7, is paramount. “We moved to an acreage four years ago to give our kids more room to run around so they can be outside instead of being on iPads.” Tanya, who competed at five senior world roller-skating championships, grew up helping out at her parents’ business, a rollerskating rink on Brisbane’s Bayside. “I worked in the canteen, as a DJ and because it was a family business, I would do whatever I could to help. “Seeing how hard my parents worked and all the obstacles they had to overcome in 30 years of being in business has driven me to want to help other businesses.’’ Tanya, who also runs peer advisory business TEC (The Executive Connection), which provides mentoring for multimillion-dollar companies, says the nomination process for the Women in Business Awards gave her a chance to reflect on her achievements. “It was not until I had that pause to think that I realised that I had achieved a lot. Entering an award like this is also a chance to tell your story. There are so many opportunities for women to network and connect.’’ To nominate for this year’s Women in Business Awards go to wibaa.com.au/ nominate-now

Phil Brown I marched back with it slung over my shoulder like a Soviet era peasant off to work Recently, I dug a hole. Hold the front page, right? I eschew manual labour nowadays, preferring to outsource any work around the house or garden. I do change light bulbs but that’s about it. But my wife wanted a hole dug in the back yard so she could bury a little compost bin that she bought. I put it off for a couple of weeks, but one Sunday recently, I couldn’t put it off anymore. When I put the shovel into the dirt it was like hitting rock. “The ground is too hard for digging here,” I declared, hoping that might be an end to it. But it wasn’t. She was determined but I was adamant. It wouldn’t work. “I really need a mattock,” I said, happy in the knowledge that we didn’t have one. So she started texting people to see if we could borrow one. Realising there was no way I was going to get out of digging this damn hole, I suddenly recalled that the people
over the road had recently created a garden out front of their house, so I marched over and asked them if they had a mattock. Sadly, they did. So I marched back with it slung over my shoulder like a Soviet era peasant off to work on the collective. And then I began to hack into the ground with it – with my wife and son looking on. Our next-door neighbour, Wayne, put his head over the fence during this intensive labour and seemed astounded by what he was witnessing – me working in the garden. “I have dug holes before,” I declared as the sweat poured off me. In my teens I did a bit of labouring work and dug quite a few holes, not all of which passed muster. I’m thinking of the famous trench I dug for some footings when I was working for my uncle in Sydney during my gap year. He had dropped me to the site on a hill near Avalon on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
I was to dig a trench by following some string lines that had been strung the day before. It was going to take a while so he would come back and pick me up later, he said. In my green King Gee shorts and Jackie Howe singlet, I toiled away under the beating sun, lifting my head occasionally to look longingly at the surf breaking far below. The job took the best part of the day and I was just about finished when my uncle turned up again. I looked up from the trench to see him scowling. “You bloody idiot,” he said. “It’s crooked.” I got a lot of ribbing about that in the weeks that followed. My workmates referred to it as the Banana Trench. The small hole I dug in our garden was more successful and it now contains a small compost bin. I may dig another hole sometime, but I can’t tell you when. I’ll keep you posted in case you want to come and watch.
Belinda Seeney One of the first features I wrote for Brisbane News was a profile on a former television presenter with an ambitious idea and boundless positivity. Pip Russell, then best known for Totally Wild and Toasted TV, had just returned from a stint overseas with the inklings of a plan. As a teenager, she’d volunteered at the Royal Children’s Hospital and, with the schmick new Lady Cilento hospital still in the pipeline, saw a way to marry her television experience with her altruistic nature. During that interview, she spoke passionately about her plan for Juiced TV and the crowd-funding drive she’d launched to bankroll its production. Her vision was to produce a weekly television show “by children, for children” and arrange fun experiences for patients. Almost four years later I caught up with Pip for another story. By then, she was Queensland’s Australian of the Year Local Hero, and Juiced TV was firmly established in Brisbane, was about to roll out in
Townsville Hospital and was reaching patients nationwide through its YouTube channel. Oh, and it had hosted the likes of Taylor Swift, Chris Hemsworth, Johnny Depp – in character as Captain Jack Sparrow – and more Broncos, Firebirds, Bulls and Bullets than you could poke a stick at as they dropped by to spark joy among young patients. While celebrating Juiced TV’s success, Pip made a confession that stuck with me: “The thing that keeps me up at night is funding.” The not-for-profit venture is funded partly by the Children’s Hospital Foundation and partly by corporate sponsors, private donations and one big annual fundraiser: the Paddle for Kids river regatta. And so it came to pass that I signed on as a paddle-waving, life vest-wearing, money-raising member of a dragon boat team this Saturday. The last time I operated a boat of any description – a two-person sea kayak with an 11-year-old riding
pillion – I became wedged on a sandbank, capsized, had a rogue wave propel it into my shins so hard I saw stars, then watched as the current wrenched it from my hands and carried my only daughter towards New Zealand. But that’s not what I thought of when asked to join Team OARSOME. Nor did I think of my lack of co-ordination, my aversion to winter and my deep suspicion about the contents of the Brisbane River. The very real possibility we could capsize into the murk of this city’s great estuary didn’t even cross my mind. No, Team OARSOME, a collective of wholly unqualified paddlers, is doing it for the kids. Catch all the Paddle for Kids action at South Bank Cultural Forecourt on Sat (Jun 16) from 8.30am-3.30pm. Or, better yet, kick in a few dollars at paddle-for-kids2018.everydayhero.com/au/oarsome

High on drama They’re born performers – suburban stars whose talents shine by night as they transform from their day jobs to tread the boards with local theatre groups Hannah Davies
For Laura Fois all the world really is a stage. By day she’s a 39-year-old mum who works as an operations engineer. But when the sun sets, a glamorous transformation occurs. Laura is a suburban stage star – one of a growing number of amateur thespians who are indulging their passion for theatre by performing in the local community. Addicted to the adrenalin rush of treading the boards, and driven by the desire to unleash her creative talents, in her spare time she embarks on an endless round of auditions as she hunts down her next big role. It doesn’t matter that she’s not paid – the audience appreciation is all the thanks she needs. “Being on stage is something I can’t get enough of,” she says. “I love everything from the character development and the music to the costumes and the makeup. It’s something completely different for me. While I like my job, the stage gives me that creative outlet.” A talented soprano from Bardon, Laura’s stage credits include community theatre productions of The Wedding Singer, Jekyll and Hyde, Shout! and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. When she landed an ensemble role in Rent at Beenleigh Theatre Group in 2015, she was so keen that she took to the stage just four weeks after giving birth to son Matteo. “In hindsight, I was absolutely nuts,” she laughs. “I was pumping
breast milk backstage. It was ridiculous and a massive drain on me, but I really wanted to do it. Generally it takes a lot of juggling with a family and is a lot of hard work. I just have to be really well organised. “I’d like to do more theatre, if I’m honest, but life gets in the way.” With so many community theatre groups across Brisbane, there are plenty of opportunities to audition each year. What’s more, the calibre of shows is getting higher, according to director, actor and community theatre blogger Sherryl-Lee Secomb. It’s good news for audiences, who can now see three or four high-quality
Many a professional has begun their career in community theatre amateur plays, cabarets or musicals for the cost of just one ticket to a QPAC production. “Back in the ’60s, community theatre was the only form of entertainment and it was amateur in the true sense of the word – the level of expertise was low,” Sherryl-Lee says. “These days you get a mix of professionals and amateurs in community shows, and many a professional has begun their career in community theatre.”
The higher standard means that it’s often harder to get a role in productions, but Sherryl-Lee says preparation is the key to success. “Those who have researched their character, the show, know their music, present themselves properly and are professional in their attitude are remembered by the audition panel,” she writes on her blog An Idiot on Stage. “Unfortunately, this ‘memorable’ group is very small.” Mum-of-two Fiona Buchanan, of Highgate Hill, has more than 30 years of theatre experience under her belt,
having appeared in both professional and amateur productions in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Describing herself as a “character actor”, the HR co-ordinator is currently preparing for her next audition, when she hopes to snatch her dream role of Matron “Mama” Morton in Savoyards’ September production of Chicago. “As well as the calibre of actor being higher these days, so is the calibre of director,” she says. “I still get nervous when I go to an audition, but these days I prepare a lot more. “It’s getting harder for me to get

roles because I’m in a difficult age bracket of 45 to 55. It’s always a challenge to walk into an audition and see that the majority of people are 20 years younger than me, but I think it’s important not to take it personally when you don’t get a role.” Unfortunately, some people do, and what audiences often don’t realise is that the drama on stage is often happening behind the scenes, too. Seasoned director Roslyn Johnson has experienced a few actors who are “unreasonably rude”, and has no time for divas. “I usually don’t cast them,” she says. “If I know in advance if
someone is a selfish performer, they just don’t get a role in my show, and it’s sometimes quite apparent from an audition. If they do get through … and turn out to be difficult to work with, I ensure it’s their last show with me.” Brisbane credit manager Puawai Herewini wouldn’t call himself a “diva”, but he was a little miffed when he didn’t make the cut in Savoyards’ Les Miserables at Lindum. “I thought I would have at least got in the ensemble,” he says. “The ego took a bit of a knock, but that won’t stop me auditioning for future shows. “I love the camaraderie of being
part of a cast and coming together to produce something great – it’s really rewarding and a lot of fun.” Meanwhile, Laura is taking a break from the stage. But she’s hoping a company will stage Evita – a role she feels born to play. “It would be a dream come true,” she says. A life’s tapestry Fiona Purdon For Lucy Maunder, showbiz is in the genes. From a young age she watched backstage during performances by her opera singer mum Anne-Maree McDonald. Now Lucy is a leading lady in her own right, with a decade of showstopping roles in musical theatre hits such as Grease and Heathers to her credit. “I’m very lucky to have my parents as role models – their creativity never stops. Of course, I saw the life dedication; I knew I had to work incredibly hard to make it,’’ she says. And history is repeating itself, with Lucy’s 15-monthold daughter Edi becoming a dressing room regular. “That was part of the reason I went straight back to work because mum had done it with me and I loved growing up in the theatre. Edi is such a social kid, she is happy around people, and I’m glad I can expose her to this life,’’ says Lucy, who starred as Miss Honey in Matilda when Edi was six weeks old. “I needed to feed her and it was mental there at the time, but I was super lucky to have support (from partner Jared Bryan and family). “Now she is a toddler, learning to talk, running around and into everything, it’s more hands-on. It’s a different type of challenge.’’ Lucy, 32, of Melbourne, is bringing Edi to Brisbane for her role as composer Cynthia Weil in the smash hit Beautiful, about the life and music of US singer-songwriter Carole King. Carole, a teenage prodigy, and Cynthia became close friends, enjoying a playful rivalry while working at the same Broadway music publishers in New York where they produced chart-toppers for artists such as Aretha Franklin and The Monkees in the 1960s. “Cynthia has a perfect mix of sassiness, dry wit and strength, but the thing I love most about her is her heart. She’s such a warm and charming character,’’ Lucy says. “This musical is a celebration of strong women doing great things.’’ Beautiful features songs from Carole’s 1971 album Tapestry. “People can’t believe how many songs Carole wrote before she became a singer herself. “People relate to Carole; she’s an everyday girl. The audience loves it when Carole stands up for herself. “I can’t wait to bring the show to QPAC because I know Brisbane audiences will go crazy.” BEAUTIFUL, Jul 13-Aug 30, QPAC, South Bank. qpac.com.au

Director: Sebastian Lelio Starring: Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams Running time: 114 minutes An illicit romance is hot-housed within the strict confines of an Orthodox Jewish community in Disobedience, a slow-burning drama about faith, duty and desire. When New York photographer Ronit Krushka (Weisz) returns to London for the funeral of her estranged father, a respected rabbi (Anton Lesser), old wounds are reopened. Unsettled by Ronit’s arrival, Rav Krushka’s “spiritual” son and anointed successor, Dovid Kuperman (Alessandro Nivola), nevertheless welcomes her into his home. Despite their divergent lifestyles, the chemistry between this emotionally restrained pair suggests a former close bond. Their pauses speak volumes. The reaction of Dovid’s wife, Esti (McAdams in a plain-making Orthodox wig), is harder to gauge. What initially appears to be hostility is later revealed to be self-protection. Ronit and Esti’s relationship is not what it seems. Every great love story requires an insurmountable obstacle. A lesbian relationship in a close-knit Jewish community certainly fits the bill. Ronit and Esti haven’t seen each other since they were discovered by Rabbi Krushka as teenage lovers. While Ronit rebelled against her religious upbringing, becoming a free-spirited, bohemian artist in America, Esti sought solace in her religion, her work as a teacher and Dovid’s steady companionship. But now that they are back under the same roof, the women’s powerful attraction is reawakened. This might suggest a steamy romantic melodrama, but director Sebastian Lelio (A Fantastic Woman) has a knack for making extraordinary situations seem natural and real. There is room for dialogue, despite the intransigence of the conservative members of the centuries-old community. The ancient religion is treated with similar respect. For an outsider, the rituals and customs are fascinating. Against this backdrop, the resolution of Lelio’s English-language debut is as surprising as it is apt. A beautifully layered story of love, courage and acceptance. VICKY ROACH
OCEAN’S 8 (M) hhhjj Director: Gary Ross Starring: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway Running time: 110 minutes To pull off the headline-stealing heist she has spent five years planning, Debbie Ocean (Bullock) needs a multimillion-dollar bankroll and the brainpower of at least seven wily women. But that’s peanuts compared to the $70 million writer-director Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit) spent recounting her story, wrangling thousands of actors, celebrities, technicians and extras in the process. The all-female spin-off to Steven Soderbergh’s three previous Ocean’s films sticks to the fast-paced, big con template, but the characters are subtly redefined by the shift in the gender balance. Ocean says she wants an all-women crew for her priceless jewel snatch because women don’t get noticed. Given the setting – Ocean’s 8 unfolds against the backdrop of the glittering, star-studded Met Gala – this would seem to be a rather paradoxical statement. The celebrity glamour of the iconic fundraising event, hosted by Vogue’s Anna Wintour, who makes a cameo appearance in the film, is an added bonus. After convincing the parole board to release her early for good behaviour, Ocean quickly assembles her team, which includes a bankrupt fashion designer (Helena Bonham Carter), a surly, dreadlocked hacker (Rihanna), a streetwise pickpocket (Awkwafina), a fence with a day job as a suburban mum (Sarah Paulson) and an unassuming jeweller (Mindy Kaling). Ocean’s 8 is a workmanlike sequel and Rihanna is more comfortable on the red carpet than she is in her role as a genius rebel. But the costume changes come thick and fast, the disguises are fun, the location is sumptuous, and the key performances are as well tailored as the couture. It’s fun to be scammed so seductively. 18 ARTS
Reflections by a billabong GALLERIES Phil Brown When it comes to great art, it’s not all about the money. OK, it’s interesting to note that a painting in the current Fred Williams exhibition at Philip Bacon Galleries sold for a record price for the artist’s work – $2.3 million for Forest Pond, a huge canvas that is the show’s centrepiece. It’s one of the two largest pieces he ever painted, another of the same size being Landscape ’74, which is hanging in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. With these two works, size does matter. They are huge. And impressive. As for the money … let’s not think about the money – let’s regard the work instead. Williams’ painting is like the holy grail of Australian landscape art, and he is revered for good reason. Williams died in 1982 at the age of 55, which is way too young. But he left an impressive body of work and his widow, Lyn Williams, has been lovingly managing his artistic legacy since then, and occasionally she releases works that we haven’t seen before and are amazed to see now. And they seem so fresh and vital.
And they are all beautiful and powerful and compelling to boot. Walking into the gallery with the Williams works on the wall is almost a religious experience if you care about Australian art. It’s also a heartwarming one when you read the catalogue and Lyn’s notes about her late husband and his work. It’s lovely to have her text, which is quite personal at times as she revisits the places that inspired her late husband. Like Kew Billabong, the subject of The tangled kite, Kew Billabong, a work that is a little busier than some of Williams’ works. (OK, it’s selling for $750,000, if you really want to know.) Lyn tells how Fred “had decided to paint oils directly outdoors and to change his palette from tonal works to using colour”. Lyn says their friend, the painter John Perceval, took Williams to Kew Billabong, a site now lost to a freeway. “He painted there many times between 1971 and 1978,” she writes. “It was easily accessible from home and always interesting.” Fred Williams is part of a pantheon of Australian artists that includes Sidney Nolan and Arthur Boyd. These artists interpreted the landscape in different ways, with Williams paring
back his work with a minimalism that explained our continent to us all over again. The subtle understatement of works such as Regenerating grass trees IV is impressive. The suite of works in Tangled kite II and Tangled kite III is almost oriental. There are only 17 paintings in the exhibition but they look like they could have been painted yesterday. And though the artist himself is, sadly, long gone, he is still very much with us. FRED WILLIAMS, until Jun 30, Philip Bacon Galleries, Fortitude Valley philipbacongalleries.com.au

Brisbane writer Laura Elvery offers beautifully spun prose and restless characters in this short story collection. In Pudding, a company wrestles with new age “giving back”, social media and image, while in Replica, a young gallery gift shop attendant dreams of her perfect job while trying to sell replicas of a Damien Hirst skull. A father-son tale, Love, Listen, is splendid in its desires for connection, and What You Really Collect is Always Yourself is poignant. Trick of the Light is an assured collection, insightful and moving. ANDREA MACLEOD
A North Queensland rainforest town takes centre stage in Fox’s latest mystery thriller. The novel continues the story of former police detective Ted Conkaffey, who seeks refuge in the town of Crimson Lake after being wrongly accused of abducting and harming a teenager in Sydney. But when he is tracked down by the teenager’s devastated father, Ted’s determination to find the real culprit intensifies. The Sydney-based author layers several storylines as Ted continues to rebuild his life, while also helping to solve a local murder. FIONA PURDON
The unsettling English winter of 1962 is the backdrop for this debut novel by Queenslandbred writer Robert Lukins. The Everlasting Sunday is an evocative, slowmoving fall into the dark recesses of the minds of two young men. Radford and the charismatic West struggle as winter’s bitterness echoes their relationship and the impact of competitors for their affections. Inspired by the Melbourne author’s own memories, the novel centres on broken young people seeking a way out that does not end up destroying them. ANDREA MACLEOD
Young Brisbane writer Emily O’Grady tells a spellbinding tale of an innocent young narrator, Cub, 10, and the evil surrounding her family in a remote town. Although Cub’s grandfather died 12 years before the novel begins, his notoriety as a serial killer of women has grown. Cub’s family is ostracised by the local community, except for a new arrival in town, Ian, who is fascinated by the family’s murky past. When Cub’s estranged aunt Helena and cousin Tilly move into the yellow house next door, family secrets are exposed. This is an astounding debut. FIONA PURDON

E’cco’s return RESTAURANT Tony Harper After more than 20 years in its Adelaide St digs, many of those years spent as Brisbane’s darling restaurant, E’cco shut up shop last year, only to recently reappear down the hill at Newstead. How much, I wonder, did its previous room – so iconic, so singular – have to do with its persona? Does it act and feel like a different restaurant now that it inhabits a different room? I think so. Walking into E’cco a year or two ago budded a familiar feeling. I’d been there so often and its space provoked a sense of coming home. Now feelings are of expectation and exploration: the new space is less quirky, less singular, more designed. But it also raises the bar a little: offbeat service, food missing the mark, even an empty glass would raise the hackles a little more in this tighter knit, glossier abode. But missing the mark has never been an E’cco habit, and it seems not much has changed. The entrance becomes an alcove thanks to a circular, diaphanous curtain (see what I mean by more designed?) that allows a view of the restaurant yet holds you at bay until you are met. Which doesn’t take long. Once inside it has warmth and bustle (suddenly a hint of the E’cco of old). The open kitchen takes centre stage; a bar plays second.
E’cco has always claimed to be a bistro. It has morphed over decades into something a little more serious: luxurious wine list, food three steps beyond simplicity, service as polished as a Cartier diamond, and staff well on top of the wines and food. There’s a Chef’s Choice (degustation) menu ($89, plus $60 for matched wines) and an a la carte with no course divides, but a gradual increase in portion size and meal weight. SEASONAL SPLENDOUR … E’cco’s On the main menu is a pork dish cauliflower; and berry cheesecake (top). ($45) – Schultz Farm suckling pig to be exact, cooked as porchetta – that sense means cheese sauce or Middle has to be the best bit of piggy-wiggy Eastern spice, and at E’cco means I’ve eaten in an age, served with beans capers, raisins, almonds and anchovy and chimichurri. Everything about it custard, $16, above). All terrific is spot on. My companions are keen accompaniments, but still, for cauliflower, a vegetable I insist is unshakeably cauliflower. like Art Garfunkel – that is, not much We try duck breast ($42) with fig, without Paul Simon (who in this ricotta and walnut tarator (that’s a
tangy, walnut-based European soup – I had to look it up); bugs with tamed down Thai accompaniments ($40); pumpkin with goat’s curd ($18); and a smashing strawberry and raspberry cheesecake ($15). It all hovers between really smart and excellent – nothing too outrageous or thought-provoking, but clever, often unexpected and, most of all, tasty. If you ignore Philip Johnson and forget the E’cco that was, there is still a mountain of enjoyment to be found at the Newstead restaurant. But Philip still exists, and E’cco’s offspring shares undeniable traits with its parent and benefits from a couple of decades of improvement. But, like any son or daughter, it has its own, in this case quite magical, path to tread.

Daily bread with Alastair McLeod The craft of cooking is a consuming passion. With that said, I should disclose that this dish will take the best part of a day to prepare. Break it down to three recipes – lamb, tabouli and flatbread. The elephant in the room is the lamb, which takes three days to prepare. This needn’t be a deal-breaker as the actual contact time is no more than 10 minutes. Once prepared it can be enjoyed as a meat and three veg hero or torn and tossed through a salad. Tackle the tabouli and enjoy with barbecued meat, fish or vegetables, yoghurt and a squeeze of lime. Enjoy the flatbread with dips or soup.
SLOW COOKED LEG OF LAMB, MACADAMIA AND GREEN OLIVE TABOULI, YOGHURT FLATBREAD Ingredients 4tbs coriander seeds, roasted till fragrant 24 cloves garlic, peeled 2tbs sea salt + extra for flatbread 1tbs sumac 4 lemons, zested + juice of 1 1 leg of lamb, shank removed Tabouli 100g bulgur wheat 150g macadamias, roasted and coarsely chopped
1 small bunch flat-leaf parsley, leaves chopped ½ bunch mint leaves, coarsely chopped 150g green olives, pitted 3 green shallots, chopped 50ml extra virgin olive oil + extra for flatbread 1 pomegranate, seeded Flatbread 250g Greek yoghurt + additional to serve 250g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting Lemon wedges, to serve
Method Coarsely pound coriander seeds in a mortar and pestle then set aside. Next, pound 20 garlic cloves to a coarse paste with a pinch of sea salt. Add coriander seeds, sumac, zest of 3 lemons and remaining sea salt, and combine to a paste. Lightly score lamb then rub paste all over. Cover and refrigerate for three days or at least overnight. To cook, preheat oven to 110C. Place lamb on a baking tray lined with baking paper and roast, basting now and then, until the meat falls from the bone. This can take 12 hours. Tabouli: Place bulgur in a bowl, cover with warm water and stand for 30 mins. Drain well, then crush remaining garlic cloves and add with remaining lemon’s zest and juice and other ingredients. Season. Flatbread: Combine yoghurt, flour and pinch of salt in a large bowl. Knead until smooth and mixture comes away from the bowl. Divide into four. Roll each into 25cm rounds. Brush both sides with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Cook on barbecue hotplate for 2 mins each side, or until golden brown. Baste with olive oil while cooking. Serve with torn lamb, tabouli, and extra yoghurt and lemon. A perfect place Casually elegant interiors set the scene for making memories with family and friends in this light, bright home created by an interior designer and builder Tonya Turner
In the leafy suburb of Graceville on Brisbane’s westside, interior designer Rochelle Orazio has finally found her forever home. She lives in the two-storey Hamptons-style house with her husband Stephen, their children Bianca, 10, and Luca, 7, and their beloved chocolate labrador, Saba. “We have been in the area for eight years now and never want to leave,” Rochelle says. Just one street away from local coffee shops and cinemas, Rochelle feels like they’ve discovered their perfect little place in the world. “We love the sunshine, barbecues and late-night swims,” she says. In summer, they use the backyard for playing games and cooling off in the pool. “Our winter months are so mild we are able to keep the doors open all year round,” she says. Rochelle and Stephen, who works
in construction, started Hedge & Picket Interiors after building and renovating properties together. The Graceville house was designed for a client by Stephen’s business, The High Side Building Co, but after their circumstances changed, Rochelle and
We love the sunshine, barbecues and late-night swims Stephen bought it for themselves. “We have added extra feature lighting (since moving in) as it changes the rooms dramatically, and some planting. I am surprised how much I love watering the lawn – particularly while chatting to the locals walking past,” Rochelle says.
GRACE AND CHARM … Rochelle Orazio’s treasures include an antique bed found locally and the unifying element of striped fabrics in most rooms throughout the house.
Connecting with family and friends is one of the most important things in Rochelle’s life. The dining table sits 12 people on single chairs and a cushioned bench seat, and is often full. “While I love beautiful furniture, I also don’t mind the wear that comes with celebrating a birthday party or
having a few drinks when unexpected visitors drop in. “We love entertaining and have hosted everything from our annual end-of-year pool party, intimate gatherings, to family Christmas catering for 40. We love eating dinner together as a family every night at the

“Working from home comes with its challenges; however, my office is one of my favourite rooms.” In decorating, Rochelle used fresh neutrals to create a relaxed, familyfriendly, casually elegant atmosphere. “I love layering with a variety of textures, and this can be seen with the
use of rattan and wicker alongside nickel and stone.” She also has a crush on stripes. “I am naturally drawn to any fabric that has them and most rooms in our home incorporate this.” Sentimental items include a Murano glass bowl from an Italian

Wake up to what you’re sleeping with We spend about a third of our day between the sheets. According to Dr Philip Tierno Jr, director of clinical microbiology and immunology at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, your bed sheets can accumulate an array of dead skin, bacteria, fungus and mites after just one night’s sleep. In a recent study, researchers found that feather and synthetic pillows between 1.5 and two years old can contain between four and 17 species of fungus. And according to cleaning guru Shannon Lush, quite a few of us are failing when it comes to keeping linen clean. “If you’re showering once a day, you can wash your sheets weekly,” Shannon says. “However, pillowcases should be changed every second day without fail. It’s against your face, and your hair holds more dirt than anywhere else on the body.”
Shannon says few people realise how many skin cells and other nasties build up in a bed over time, and recommends washing the doona every month along with pillows. She says the best way to wash a doona is in the bath using a small amount of cheap shampoo. “Stomp up and down on the doona, then rinse in the same temperature water,” she says. When it comes to washing sheets, she suggests you don’t pour any rice water down the sink – that’s her secret to “five-star hotel quality linen”. “I always put rice water into the final rinse of my sheet wash,” she says. “After cooking the rice, save that water and dilute it one part rice water to four parts regular water. “Keep the mixture in a jar in the laundry, and add two tablespoons during the final rinse.”

Get the right style advice Preparing for an open home? Avoid the mistakes people often make by following some sage style advice from the team at 2 Mad Sisters. Executive officer Sam Cook says when putting your house on the market to consider bringing more brightness into living and entertaining areas. “Too often people select neutraltoned furniture and paint the walls white,” Sam says. “They’re then surprised to feel nothing when entering the room. Colour and light are what gives feeling to a room — don’t be afraid to use it and enjoy it.” When maximising space in a smaller living room, be smart when selecting furniture.
“People often try to squeeze too much into the room,” Sam says. “If you’re finding it difficult to fit in all of your favourite books and DVDs, there are many storage solutions to help avoid clutter.” Sam says that while preparing a house for sale is a tricky business, seeking out a professional stylist can add thousands to the final sale price. “And the service is not as expensive as you may think,” she says. 2MADSISTERS.COM.AU

Horoscope with Tanya Obreza this week injects some much-needed sparkle. Whatever happens, the cosmos forces a slow down – which is probably welcome news. Even if you can’t come to a complete standstill, try going with the flow. As you cruise through each day, you may be pleasantly surprised at who’s stepping along beside you.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 21) Best day: Tuesday 19th Stand by for a catapult out of what has seemed a never-ending rut. Many Geminis are now asked to take risks and if you see this as welcome news, change will be embraced with a sense of adventure. But for those who opt for a more familiar path, the ride might not sit so smoothly. Sure a change of direction can be disruptive, but equally liberating.
CANCER (June 22 - July 22) Best day: Sunday 17th When you feel torn between two worlds, certain aspects of your life lose out to other concerns. This is especially the case if you’ve been absorbed in an all-or-nothing career drive. Realign your priorities and include partners in your decision-making. Then find some loving company and relax.
SAGITTARIUS
negotiations forcefully and dynamically – happily, in your favour. And now that you’ve finally decided to embark on that special journey, there’s no turning back. This is a time when one small catalyst could make all the difference. Impressed with your inspired outlook, someone in authority may offer a helping hand.
LIBRA
(July 23 - August 23) Best day: Wednesday 13th Despite your professional ambitions, life has a habit of occasionally turning priorities upside down. There are times when you simply have to delegate at work, then turn your interests to having fun. This week that’s exactly what you should do.
(September 23 - October 23) Best day: Thursday 14th When Venus whispers tantalising temptations, you may opt to ignore this seductive call. Good call as this pleasure-seeking planet seems determined to be reckless. If stepping into a new relationship, you’d better set up a no-touch zone until you’re sure your prospective lover isn’t already committed. Life’s messy enough at the moment.

LEO
(November 23 - December 21) Best day: Monday 18th It’s not a time for sitting on the fence. A hard ask, because at the moment it seems that every decision leads to yet another promising possibility. Stop procrastinating, Sagittarius, and choose your direction wisely. Some may feel the need for private retreat. For others, however, an entanglement from the past disrupts the present.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Best day: Saturday 16th Capricorns don’t like surprises, but you’re still subjected to the unexpected. This week, even the best-made plans may be turned upside down. You can either lose your cool or yield with grace. The latter seems more dignified. Nonetheless, the cosmos continues to have you on the hop, with far more disruption thrown into your usual routine.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 18) Best day: Tuesday 19th This week is a special reward time for you, as the cosmos ensures you have no trouble satisfying desires. You’re also in the mood to throw financial caution to the wind – and so are loved ones. Just as well cash looks
BRAIN FOOD WITH LARA CURION A popular myth about equestrian statues relates to the way the rider died. The horse rearing up meant the rider died in battle. One hoof off the ground and the rider died later from wounds in battle. All four hooves down meant the rider died of natural causes. A story was printed in 1905 regarding the restrictive swimming laws: “A lady resident at a seaside resort objected to (scantily clad) people bathing from boats in the bay. When the official remarked, ‘But, madam, surely they are far enough out?’ She replied, ‘But you can see them quite plainly with field glasses’.”
plentiful – even if it is borrowed. Just one warning: you’re a tad more accident-prone that usual.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Best day: Wednesday 13th Use this week to rest and rejuvenate. Soon after, you’ll need energy in abundance when sensational love suddenly appears. Most can expect a powerful union of the physical and spiritual. Alternatively, should you need more time to think or shed unwanted clutter, allow yourself a well-deserved break. Either way, change is likely.
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Best day: Sunday 17th Why can’t every week be like this, with manna pouring from the heavens and your success ready to soar? At the very least, others finally get to appreciate your efforts. With the cosmos also offering its financial stamp of approval, pitch your dream project to anyone willing to listen. You may be surprised where that lucky break comes from.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20) Best day: Monday 18th Silence might be golden but it can also lead to misunderstandings. You’ve been asked to maintain secrecy, and until now have kept good faith. After all, it’s in your nature to be unquestioningly loyal. That is, until you run against a particularly petulant Pluto, who’s suddenly not so keen to play by the customary rules. Stay silent. tanyaobreza.com
ANSWERS German Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) was a mathematician, astronomer and astrologer. He was the first to investigate the formation of pictures with a pinhole camera and is known as the founder of modern optics. NASA launched a space observatory named after him. All the gold ever mined in recorded history would fit into a space of only 21 cubic metres – and that giant block of pure gold would weigh more than 174 million kilograms! Since 2013, astrophysicists have thought that gold is a type of shiny star matter, most likely created when two neutron stars collided.
