On the front foot All Julia Alexander wanted were the perfect loafers for her hubby. When she couldn’t find them, she created her own Hannah Davies Every debonair dresser loves a loafer.

But when it came to finding a “standout pair” for her husband, Brisbane mum Julia Alexander kept coming up short.

Not content with purchasing something that didn’t quite hit the mark, the former lawyer embarked on a new career path – launching Jack Riviera, her own collection of luxury dress loafers.

Handmade from velvet with either a silk or leather lining and a leather sole, Julia says the loafers are perfect for the winter months.

“They are very Palm Beach and Hamptons inspired,” she tells Brisbane News.

“The brand was born out of my love for the high-end international versions I’d seen and my reluctance to pay the prices. I decided there was a real gap in the market for an affordable yet stylish take on the old-fashioned smoking loafer and thought I would just design my own.”

Strongly influenced by the sights and colours of luxury getaways, Julia says Jack Riviera personifies a man who appreciates the better things in life: barrel-aged wine, fine dining, tailored suits and handcrafted shoes.

“He’s a George Clooney style of man – charismatic, cheeky and chivalrous, all at the same time. My husband Michael loves the shoes and always gets comments when he wears a pair.”

Originally popular in the 1940s through to the late ’60s, loafers have made a comeback in recent years thanks to a big celebrity following, which includes reality TV star

Kourtney Kardashian’s ex-partner, Scott Disick.

Taking a classic shoe staple, Julia has given it a cheeky twist, creating five styles, each with a playful persona – the Ahoy Jack and Squadron Jack with the nautical insignia; the Tipsy Jack loafers adorned with martini glasses; Tassel Jack, which gives a nod to the demure men’s smoking slipper; and King of Jacks, which were recently seen on Aussie rules football icon Chris Judd and sport a regal lion.

Julia, 38, who has a law and international business degree from QUT, launched her collection last month. Ten months in the pipeline, she named it “Jack” after the childhood nickname given to her by her parents.

The Ascot resident has no plans to return to corporate law.

“It’s amazing how much I learned about running a business by researching online from my dining room table,” she says. “It’s been a huge learning curve for me, but incredibly fulfilling. I feel much more of a tangible reward at the end of the day than I did as a lawyer, and it means I can still be at home for the children.”

The loafers, priced at $185, are attracting a following of fashionconscious men in their 30s and 40s.

Julia, who has three children, is now getting ready to launch ranges for children and ladies.

“Loafers are just so popular with everyone at the moment, and these really are perfect for wearing to a long lunch or a fun social occasion,” she says.

“There are a lot of loafers around, but there’s nothing quite like these.”

Simply sweet Handcrafted and customised is a mantra that’s behind the success of baker Jocelyn Hancock Cassandra Houghton

ocelyn Hancock’s baking queen status in Brisbane began via word of mouth, as all the best reputations do.

It was whispers of a tiny pop-up cake shop under the Story Bridge, back in the 1990s before pop-ups were a thing; it was people knocking on the door of her initially wholesale premises, requesting decadent desserts for parties and teas.

Now, 20 years after she founded, and subsequently sold, her iconic Jocelyn’s Provisions in New Farm, Jocelyn’s treats have returned to their inner-north roots in the form of Cake & Bake, the business she started in West End in 2015.

Cake & Bake opened its jaunty red and white doors in Commercial Rd, Newstead, in April, giving Jocelyn a second shopfront in Brisbane. “It’s been 10 years since I left the ’hood, so moving back is exciting,” she says.

That heady, sugary aroma unique to bakeries wafts through the door of our meeting spot – a petite office leading into the baking area of her new shop. I linger on the way in, passing trays of spiced hot cross buns, chocolate and vanilla cakes waiting for embellishment, savouries, and friands with raspberry and rhubarb.

“It’s cosy in Newstead, but it’s still the same set-up and the same ethos that I had a hundred years ago – that our food is clean, fresh, delicious, handmade, preservative-free,” she explains. “Simple ingredients – fruit, flour, yeast, sugar and spice. That everything is handcrafted and customised is still the mantra.”

Baking has been a lifelong love for the 53-year-old entrepreneur. “I started JP’s because I could see there was that potential for retail – there was a need for it,” Jocelyn says. “I was working at Yungaba (she leased the kitchen at historic Yungaba House, Kangaroo Point) in wholesale and I had this little vestibule where people would walk in off the back step to a couple of racks I had put up there.

“Whatever was left over from the bake – you know, if I had six loaves of corn bread or 20 baguettes or three chocolate cakes out of a batch I’d put them there, and it was this sort of unwritten rule that there

James St was being built … there were the tilt slabs and a big plough of flattened concrete where the old Coca-Cola building was and I thought ‘this is a great new retail area and New Farm seems like a fun and interesting spot to live and work in’. The rent was cheap, and the rest is history.”

Jocelyn’s Provisions quickly became a Brisbane institution, known for its “real” cakes and desserts. “It was great. I had this token shop out the front that was sort of this French antique shop with cakes in it, and I loved that space,” she says.

“Then we bought a warehouse on Commercial Rd – that we have now moved back to – and that’s where we did the baking.”

Jocelyn’s finely-honed baking skills and

her clean-eating ethos are the result of a childhood spent on her family farm in Killarney, about 35km west of Warwick, and her dedication to learning the craft in kitchens in London and Brisbane.

There, she learned the cook’s trade from the ground up, but it wasn’t until she began specialising in pastries that she felt the spark of passion.

“I was in the last two years of my fouryear cook’s apprenticeship working at Rag’s, which was a restaurant in Caxton St in the ’80s that I had been desperate to work in, and I volunteered to do the cakes and desserts,” she recalls. “And after a bit I just went – wow. This is me. I had grown up with people who baked cakes – mothers, aunts, grandparents who cooked all the time. It was just what I thought

everybody did, so I sort of took to the butter-and-flour thing and loved it.

“Then I went to London to work in pastry kitchens and that’s where it really happened and I thought – this is my thing.

It’s very different to grilling a steak.”

The 72ha family property at Killarney remains an influence. Together with her firefighter husband, Myles Parry, and their two boys, Huon, 13, and Owen, 11, Jocelyn splits her time between their house at the farm and their city home in New Farm.

Harvests from the land – lemons, plums, pomegranates – appear in her shop’s freshly-baked produce.

“The property is a big part of our life – our boys are fifth generation on the same land. My parents still live there, at the front of the block, and my sister and her

family live about 10km away, and we all do varying degrees of farming. We agist cattle and have an orchard and bees, and we’ve done a lot of replanting trees. There’s still that definite connection to the land and it influences how I cook,” she says.

Jocelyn sold Jocelyn’s Provisions in 2009, intent on a sabbatical, but was quickly lured back. She spent 12 months developing a range of Hancock & Farm preserves and compotes, but baking (too much, she says) at home soon evolved into the business venture Cake & Bake.

I ask her what she loves most about baking and she reacts with a far-off look into the distance, a vibrancy to her words.

“It’s funny, but I’m a savoury person – I love cheese and olives and all that kind of savouriness,” she says. “But I love dessert, too – a rose panna cotta that is just so luscious and voluptuous in its texture that you couldn’t stop eating it and don’t want to share – that’s what I love. Or a killer rich chocolate tart, or a fabulous, soft, lemony, luscious dessert like lemon delicious.

“I get an extreme amount of satisfaction from producing something and putting it together and blending the flavours, and putting it in the oven, and that moment that it comes out … it’s the actual enjoyment I get from someone eating the cake. That’s the buzz.”

Dog dates Pooches can find a paw-fect playdate thanks to this local dog lover’s new app Josh Fritz, 21 APP DEVELOPER What’s new with you?

I’ve just broken into the tech space and developed a social dog app called PatchPets. It connects dogs and dog owners to help them find park pals or their local pet-friendly cafes, businesses, hotels and groomers.

Why a dog app?

In mid-2017 I left my family home in Mackay and moved to Brisbane for university. Sadly, this meant leaving our gorgeous family pooches behind. After I settled into apartment living and my studies I realised a huge part of me was missing, and that was life with my pooches.

That’s when I got Quincy, my dog. We were heading to the park every day to stretch her legs, although there were never any mates for her to run around with.

From there the idea was born.

Has Quincy been on many play dates?

For sure. Quincy and I meet with locals in the park most Saturdays so the humans can all enjoy a cup of coffee while the pooches run around mad. It’s really heartwarming to see.

Could this app become the next Tinder for pet owners?

Trust me, PatchPets is purely an app for social dogs to make friends. It’s definitely a walk in the park compared to some of the Tinder dates my friends have been on.

Does science say dogs are happier when they have pals?

From personal experience, Quincy is so much calmer and less yappy when she’s

had the chance to run around the park and socialise with other doggos. The RSPCA also speak of a critical socialisation period for puppies. It claims that between the age of 3-17 weeks, socialisation assists in pooch development, shaping their adaptability to different environments and how they adjust to other dogs and people.

What is it that you love about dogs?

Dogs love everything about their humans, no matter their size, skin colour, sexuality, appearance, intellect or wealth. They just love you for you, and I think it’s the most rewarding thing in life to find a companion that will love you and your company as much as you love theirs.

Your favourite Brissie spots for dogs?

The Colmslie Reserve dog park in Morningside. It has the most green field in all of Brisbane so it’s just as nice for me as it is for Quincy. Our favourite dog-friendly cafe would have to be Little Smirk at Kangaroo Point. They have the best coffee and always have a dog bowl out the front for your pooch.

Is PatchPets now your full-time gig?

Yes. I believe you have to dedicate everything you have to a business if you want it to be successful. I am also studying finance (accounting) to assist me with my business venture.

What’s next for you?

It’s what draws us back to the people who know us best One of the patriarchs of my extended family is living with dementia.

Technically he’d be my step-grandad but that’s not really a thing. He is however a dear old gentleman who means the world to my mum Freda and stepdad Mick and that’s what matters to me.

Hearing how they cope with the changes in this kind, decent, old man and the toll those changes take on his wife makes the rest of us wonder what’s ahead for our own advanced years. Could any of us cope with loving someone who no longer knows who we are?

Mick’s parents have always been madly in love, you see. Even now, when B has no idea who D is, he still spends every day holding hands with her. To him, she’s “the nice lady” or “my favourite nurse”. That’s why B is taken to her room each morning from the overnight safety of a secure ward at the retirement community where they live now. Because they belong together.

Connection is everything in this life. It’s what draws us back to the people who know us best, long after we’ve forgotten who we are.

It’s not easy to think about the people

we love growing older or losing their grip on the world. But it helps to know families can find ways to keep vital connections alive.

Mick stays in touch with his dear dad by talking about the old days, regaling him with the stories his dad had first told him as a boy. Tales from Winton’s baking hot shearing sheds where B was among the finest to ever hurl a fleece, until his back went.

Being country people, they love a good, long yarn on the phone and speak most days. Together they laugh, they gossip and

for a moment Mick feels his dad is really there. Like he used to be.

Then he hangs up and calls back to find out how his mum is doing. And how B is actually getting on: if his moods are OK, whether he’s eating, that sort of thing.

Which is how Mick found out what B occasionally says after their father-son calls – a small glimpse inside a mind that’s not always there.

“I don’t know who that bloke is but he just loves to talk about shearing.”

Impeccably run, Paul McGivern’s latest restaurant delivers on all fronts RESTAURANT Tony Harper

cross his five restaurants that I remember, Paul McGivern has managed to keep things grounded; interesting but not too alien, always wine friendly, and always impeccably run. With Corella – the latest – not much has changed. It ticks all the boxes in a seemingly effortless way, and it has that increasingly rare attribute of accepting BYO … on Wednesday nights.

Which, in the end, is why I’m there on a Wednesday, dining with friends over a couple of stellar Californian reds: not Napa … way, way better than that.

Sonoma Coast.

The shame is that Corella has a terrific wine list: pinot-centric (as is Paul), and flashed up a little by a morphing set of wines under Coravin. It’s well priced and –

I’m thrilled with our Californians, but my view is that unless you have a truly serious couple of bottles, just order by the glass from the list: you’ll have a better night. Variety is the spice of life after all.

It’s a contemporary menu with no particular genre, merely keeping away from Asian … sort of Euro-Oz. It’s really smart bistro fare with just a hint of kitchen skulduggery – pared back and singing more of good technique and quality food than of Gandalf in a chef’s apron.

We get Oz in the form of kangaroo tartare ($7 per piece). It arrives on freeform shards of rice-cracker, liberally doused with parmesan shavings, raisin in

the mix and something green. It’s very good. Kingfish (also raw) comes with orange jam, bottarga (oh, how I love bottarga) and sorrel. Simple. Lovely ($18).

There is also pork belly ($19) with fennel and apple – good but kind of mainstream – and a wonderful plate (best of the night I reckon) of lamb neck with pumpkin and oregano ($17). It’s a killer dish, and I have a hunch that fatty lamb is a tricky player – the fat congeals at a relatively high temperature and goes from great to blah with just a few minutes and a few degrees. These guys have it sorted.

Mains arrive. Duck with rhubarb and pommes maxim – a kind of buttery gratin of potatoes ($37), and wagyu (seven-score perhaps?) with beetroot and potato gratin ($39); both delicious.

There are three desserts plus cheese.

We opt for a macadamia parfait ($16) that turns out to be perhaps the most tricked-up plate of the night – two beautifully spooned quenelles of citrus sorbet, sitting like a couple of dove-eggs on mandarin granita, a round of parfait to the side. It’s clever.

The theatre all happens in a nicely gloomy room on the ground level of some swanky, new apartment block in Woolloongabba. It’s a nice room, the bar and kitchen holding the brightest spots (at least at night), everything else is kind of contemporary, semi-industrial chic.

And it’s a good fifth edition to Paul McGivern’s collection: reigned in, broadly appealing and perfectly, impeccably run.

Berry nice Food bloggers David Frenkiel and Luise Vindahl are experts at satisfying sugar cravings – in a healthy way

This is an edited extract from Little Green Kitchen by David Frenkiel and Luise Vindahl, Hardie Grant Books, $39.99, available in stores nationally.

RUBY ROLL CAKE Ingredients 8-10 soft dates, pitted 4 eggs, preferably free-range and organic, separated 100ml oat milk 1 beetroot, peeled 100g almond flour 50g desiccated (dried shredded) coconut 2 tbsp arrowroot (or potato starch or cornflour/cornstarch) ½ tsp baking powder Pinch of sea salt

Berry and chia jam 3-4 soft dates, pitted and mashed 80ml water 250g frozen berries (raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries) 2 tbsp chia seeds For assembly 250g mascarpone (optional)

Method Preheat the oven to 180C and line a large baking sheet with baking parchment.

Put the dates in a food processor, along with egg yolks and milk. Mix for a minute, or until the dates have dissolved and the mixture is lump-free. Grate the beetroot on a box grater (or use the grating attachment on the food processor). Add to the food processor and pulse until smooth and purple.

Add the remaining cake ingredients

(except the egg whites) and pulse until they all come together. Beat the egg whites in a separate bowl and, when they are fluffy, stir through the cake batter. Pour onto the baking tray (pan) and use a spatula to smooth it out evenly in a large rectangle over the paper. It should be roughly 30 x 35cm and about 1cm high. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Take the cake from the oven and let it cool just slightly (it should be a bit warm to make rolling easier). Carefully flip it upside down onto another sheet of parchment paper and peel the paper off the back.

To make the jam Put the dates in a small lidded saucepan along with the water and bring to the boil.

Add the rest of the ingredients and stir.

Bring back to the boil, remove from heat and set aside with the lid ajar for 15 minutes to thicken, stirring occasionally to prevent lumps. You can use a handheld blender to make the jam smoother.

Store in an airtight jar or container in the fridge for up to five days.

To assemble the cake Stir together berry jam (once cooled) and mascarpone (if using), slathering on top of the entire cake. Roll it up like a sushi roll, using the parchment paper as a rolling mat.

Serve sliced as hand rolls or plated with yoghurt and extra jam on the side.

A helping hand: Kids can help out with most parts of this cake – pitting the dates, stirring the batter, flattening it out in the baking tray (pan) and, of course, slathering the filling on top. Serves 10–12

Musical chairs Pavement pianists will be able to tickle the ivories at pianos placed on city streets as part of a statewide music festival Fiona Purdon

f Pip Boyce has her way, Brisbane’s streets will be filled with community song during next month’s Queensland Music Festival.

Twenty pianos will be placed around Brisbane to encourage spontaneous jam sessions as the city hosts the latest edition to the worldwide phenomenon Play me, I’m Yours project, which Pip is producing.

“It’s my heart project for this festival,’’ Pip says. “Everyone I have spoken to, from people who donated the pianos, to community groups, to (people at) the locations where the pianos will end up, are excited. There is such a wonderful sense of joy with this project. It’s bringing people together through music … by making music in public places.

“We hope the pianos will put a smile on people’s faces and a song in their hearts.’’

The interactive public art installation was conceived in 2008 by British artist Luke Jerram, who placed 15 street pianos around Birmingham, including industrial estates, bus shelters and football grounds, garnering a groundswell of public support.

Since then the project has reached millions of people worldwide, with more than 1900 street pianos placed in more than 60 cities from Tokyo to New York.

public parks, markets, shopping malls or train stations, bears the simple instruction to “Play Me, I’m Yours”.

Brisbane’s 20 pianos, “gifted’’ by local families, will be placed from Shorncliffe Pier to Mt Coot-tha lookout.

“We were offered 30-odd pianos but many didn’t make it through the first test (of still working at a reasonable standard),’’ she says. “Some pianos we have received are 100 years old. Unfortunately pianos have a life limit so we needed reconditioned pianos.’’

Twenty pianos have been chosen to signify the 20th anniversary of the QMF.

Their locations will include the Brisbane Powerhouse, Brookside Shopping Centre, Downfall Creek Bushland, Fortitude Valley, Queen Street Mall and South Bank.

“It will be like a musical treasure hunt,’’ she says. “The pianos will be available to play and we encourage everyone to play and interact and take photos and to share those photos on our website or on our Instagram/social media #PMIYBNE.’’ Each piano has been individually painted, mostly by professional artists working from a Woolloongabba studio.

Brisbane tattoo artist Mimsy Gleeson, from Trailer Trash Tattoo, wanted to give her older, locally made piano, nicknamed Howard, “a fabulous makeover’’.

Mimsy spent 50 hours painting her aquatic-themed piano that will be at South City Square, Woolloongabba.

“I wanted this ol’ fella to be the fabulous creative he was born to be,” she says. “I’ve always found the aquatic theme so magical. I Imagine the awe and wonder in the eyes of young children when Howard’s sparkle catches their eye ... and the fun had by counting how many fish. I really wanted to bring a smile to the faces of (Brisbane) people.’’

Pip adds: “It’s been such a beautiful experience for Mimsy, to have the opportunity to paint a piano, when she is used to working on people’s skin. The pianos are as individual as their stories and as the artists working on them.’’

Pip, 46, of New Farm, says each piano will be looked after by several “piano buddies”.

Pip has worked as a producer for about 20 years including with last year’s Matilda Award-winning The Sound of a Finished Kiss at Brisbane Powerhouse.

“The joy of working in an environment like this (as a producer) is that you get to collaborate with amazing people, you want to create experiences that can only happen when many people combine their talents and imaginations,’’ she says.

Double bonus Two exhibitions celebrate the life and works of the late great Australian artist Margaret Olley, whose generosity overflowed Phil Brown Art exhibitions can move and inspire but I haven’t seen one for a while that does both the way the Margaret Olley exhibition now on at GOMA does. I was anticipating it rather keenly but when I finally saw it on the gallery walls I was taken aback.

My first viewing was a Monday lunchtime and the exhibition was packed with people who seemed genuinely overcome by the beauty of it all. Margaret Olley: A Generous Life features more than 100 paintings and drawings highlighting the colourful life, legacy and influence of this much-loved artist. It focuses V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

particularly on her Brisbane years when she was discovered as an artist by Caroline Barker, her Somerville House art teacher.

I spoke to Margaret’s friend, Dame Quentin Bryce, before the show and she said that had Margaret not been singled out and encouraged at school, she may not have embarked upon a life as an artist.

When I chatted with Dame Quentin she’d had a sneak preview.

“It brings tears to my eyes,” she told me.

I thought that maybe that was just because of the close connection they had.

But frankly, I found it quite emotional too. It exudes such love and beauty that at

times it’s almost overwhelming and the spirit of the artist seems to hover in the ether at GOMA. I chatted to a few people who were all visibly moved. It’s very much a show about Margaret Olley (who died in 2011) as a person, too, and some wonderful video content of her reflects on her life and art.

In one she talked about how she stopped drinking before it killed her and that seemed to be a watershed. Having diced with death she affirmed that her paintings were really about one thing.

“I celebrate life,” she said and I thought that was such a beautiful sentiment.

The exhibition includes her famously lush interiors and still lifes but there is so much more. Her portraits of indigenous women are revelatory and there are some wonderful Brisbane paintings including a cracker of the Breakfast Creek Hotel.

There are major works by other artists that are owned by galleries due to Olley’s benefaction and some wonderful portraits including William Dobell’s 1948 portrait of her, which won the Archibald Prize.

The day I was there they were still unpacking Ben Quilty’s 2011 Archibald Prize-winning portrait of her, which is now part of the show. The companion show, Quilty (the two were friends), opens this weekend.

Philip Bacon Galleries is also having an exhibition of works from Olley’s estate and that will be popular with collectors.

The affection people have for Margaret Olley is to do with her work, her persona and her genius for friendship. She was also a mentor who inspired younger artists.

And as Dame Quentin writes, Margaret Olley is ours, despite her years living elsewhere. Her Brisbane years made her, as this exhibition shows. It’s a triumph and QAGOMA’s team has presented the exhibition of the year. Well done.

YESTERDAY (M) hhhkj Director Danny Boyle Starring Himesh Patel, Lily James, Ed Sheeran Fancy a sweet shot of nostalgia with your glitch-in-the-space-time-continuum musical? Then Yesterday, about a struggling British singer-songwriter who awakes from a coma to discover he’s the only person on the planet to remember the Beatles, has got you covered.

Imagining a world without John, Paul,

George and Ringo gives screenwriter Richard Curtis (Love Actually) and director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) an excuse to raid the Fab Four’s extensive back catalogue. And the narrative conceit of handing those exemplary pop tunes to an unsuccessful artist lends them fresh perspective.

English actor Himesh Patel (above, EastEnders) adds texture with a well-judged performance that draws upon his everyman charisma. He doesn’t do a half-bad job with the songs, either.

Yesterday is a superior jukebox musical and it hits all the right notes as a crowdpleasing rom-com.

But then, it’s directed by a British dream team, with the director of Trainspotting and 28 Days Later reining in his colleague’s tendency towards schmaltzy excess.

Lily James (Downton Abbey) creates a solid romantic foil as the slightly dorky high-school teacher who moonlights as the lead character’s manager (the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again star barely gets to sing a note).

MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL (M) hhjjj Director F. Gary Fray Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Emma Thompson Chris Hemsworth’s low-key impersonation of James Bond in this misguided alien action adventure lacks the Aussie actor’s customary twinkle. Thor: Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson, who made a big impression in the small independent drama Little Woods, doesn’t get a lot of traction out of her rookie agent, either.

What saves this not-nearly-odd-coupleenough screen partnership from plain awkwardness is Hemsworth and Thompson’s (pictured) easygoing chemistry, which occasionally transcends the lacklustre screenplay. But not even a souped-up visual effects department can get this Men In Black reboot out of second gear. There are plenty of spills but few thrills and precious little comic relief.

What few laughs there are, are provided by a tiny alien, Pawny (Kumail Nanjiani), who swears an oath of allegiance to 18 BRISBANE NEWS June 26-July 2, 2019

Thompson’s Agent M after his own chessset Queen is slaughtered. Proving that size doesn’t count, Pawny steals one of the movie’s key set pieces, which involves a shiny space motorbike, a spectacular Moroccan desert backdrop and a weapon that, on its lowest setting, can blow a crater 10 times the size of the Grand Canyon.

Directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Fate of the Furious), MIB: International kicks off at the top of the Eiffel Tower, with a crackling prologue in which the cocky Agent H (Hemsworth) and his mentor and boss, Agent High T (Liam Neeson), take on the invasive alien Hive.

There’s a second scene-setting flashback

But this is Patel’s film.

After years of performing in empty pubs to his three best friends, Jack Malik finally decides to call it quits.

Riding home from his last, failed gig, Jack is struck by a bus at the exact instant the lights go out all over the entire world When he comes to – bruised black-andblue and missing his two front teeth – the Beatles, Oasis, cigarettes and Coca-Cola no longer exist.

After some rather perfunctory soulsearching, Jack claims the Fab Four’s songs as his own, desperately wracking his brains to remember some of the more obscure lyrics (Eleanor Rigby eludes him for much of the film).

There’s a fun scene in which Jack is constantly interrupted by his lovingly condescending parents after they ask him to perform one of “his” new tunes.

Even the Beatles’ proven pop smarts don’t initially improve Jack’s fortunes.

It’s only when Ed Sheeran hears one of the songs on a local TV talk show that his meteoric ascent begins.

Kate McKinnon delivers a scenestealing performance as Jack’s brutally honest, money-hungry industry rep.

When he attempts to sneak one of his own songs on to the new album, she dismisses it as so boring and forgettable, she can’t even be bothered listening to it again to be sure.

Of course, the greater Jack’s success, the more his conscience troubles him.

Ellie, long suffering manager, No.1 fan and would-be lover, serves as his moral compass.

Even when you know you are being played like a three-chord rock ’n’ roll standard, the natural exuberance of Yesterday’s appealing romantic leads carries you along.

involving the young M, or Molly, who liberates a creature that looks a lot like a multi-coloured Gremlin after watching her parents’ memories neutralised.

Twenty years later, Molly (Thompson) finally locates the “best kept secret in the galaxy”, MIB HQ in New York. There she persuades a steely Agent O (Emma Thompson, who does a lot with a blonde wig and a couple of good lines) to recruit her.

For her first probationary assignment, Agent M is dispatched to the London office.

There she meets the rakish Agent H, a former MIB star now regarded by many of his colleagues as a loose cannon.

There’s a should-be-fun but ultimately flat interlude in Marrakesh involving a motormouthed mechanic with an autonomous, alien beard, followed by a game-changing detour to Riza’s Fortified Fortress of For Sure Death, which is lifted straight out of a Bond movie.

Even MIB: International’s alien crowd sequences feel reheated.

Perhaps the films should be retitled Six Characters in Search of a Fresh Idea.

Touch of style Fashionista Cate Massi pairs style advice with a confidence boost Hannah Davies

eeting Cate Massi is daunting to say the least. Having heard about her impeccable eye for style, I wasn’t confident she would like the Asos green dress I had thrown on in a rush.

But given that I am keen to refresh my look, I figured I’d better put my best foot forward and see what Cate could do.

As resident fashion stylist at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, Cate last year styled 1000 people as part of the centre’s free personal styling sessions.

These take just an hour and are incredibly rewarding for everyone, she says.

“Changing the way people dress is life changing,” Cate (left) says. “I see a real cross-section of people – new mums returning to work, divorcees, job hunters, and anyone hitting those 30/40/50 milestones. I’ve also styled radio stars Bianca Dye and Abby Coleman.

“I like to guide them but I’m not here to push things on anyone because at the end of the day fashion is about personal expression. I get men too, which I love.

One guy I saw recently had broken up with his girlfriend of seven years, and because she would always dress him he had no idea how to style himself when left to his own devices. I enjoyed that and he felt amazing afterwards.”

As it turns out, an outing with Cate is like shopping with your friend – with the exception that she knows exactly what suits you and isn’t afraid to tell you.

Refreshingly outspoken, she quips, “If you turn up to the styling session looking terrible, it’s easier for me to know what to do to make you look good.”

Fortunately, Cate doesn’t think I look “terrible” when I introduce myself at the centre information desk. I am keen to clean up my “school pick-up look” though, so after a brief chat about my style and budget, we hit Portmans and Decjuba.

I’m usually more of a Sheike girl, but always up for something new, I decide to explore this unfamiliar territory.

own devices in the fitting room, popping back to see each outfit and “style me up” – adding a leather jacket here and a hair scarf there to great effect.

There was no pressure to buy anything, but I came away with two new pairs of shorts. I refused to be persuaded when it came to adding a pair of white sneakers (unless they’re hi-tops, I’m not interested.)

For winter, Cate said to invest in a good blazer, a well-fitting pair of jeans, a “hero” bag, ankle boots, and a midi skirt.

She certainly made me feel at ease with stories of her own fashion faux pas.

The 51-year-old – who lives at Kenmore and has a background as a restaurateur – hit a fashion rut 14 years ago after the birth of her two sons. In 2008 she took a parttime job as a sales assistant in Cue, at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, and found she loved helping people find an outfit.

Cate, who also has her own styling business, Individual Style 101, qualified as a fashion stylist in 2015. Two years later she landed the job at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, after a friend asked her to help out at what was then just a temporary styling service. It was such a success that she was asked to stay on permanently.

As for her own personal style, Cate likens herself to designer Collette Dinnigan. “I love to mix high-end designer things with cheaper trend pieces.”

Height of harmony Luxury is born of this marriage of old and new Emma Schafer

W

hen trailblazing architect Elina Mottram designed the Scott Street Flats in Kangaroo Point, there was no way she could have known the Tudorstyle building would one day become a sort of luxe clubhouse for Brisbane’s rich-listers.

Mottram (1903-’96) was Queensland’s first registered female architect, and the apartment building at 2 Scott St was one of her first projects after opening her own practice in 1924.

In 2003, nearly eight decades after the

flats were built in 1925, the structure was heritage listed. Today, its timber and brick facade with wide bay windows overlooking the Brisbane River is unchanged, but its function is markedly different.

The one-time flats now adjoin Walan, a $30m luxury apartment tower designed

by Brisbane architecture firm Bureau Proberts and completed late last year.

Walan comprises 14 whole-floor, luxury apartments – which all sold for an average of $4m – and the former Scott Street Flats house a library, gym, media room and kitchen for the use of residents.

Bureau Proberts managing and creative director, Liam Proberts, 54, says incorporating the heritage building harmoniously into his design was paramount. “We wanted the building to be a part of the completed element, so Walan sets itself back from the house at the lower levels and works with the shape of the house,” he says.

“We tried to keep the old house as it was so (Walan residents) enter the building by climbing the original stairs and going through the original front door.

“It’s important that the Kangaroo Point

peninsula moves into the 21st century in terms of apartment living, so the interface between existing and new buildings is an important thing to work with.”

Walan has been lauded for this clever design, taking out 2019 Building of the Year at the Australian Institute of Architects’ Queensland Regional Architecture Awards.

Last month it also earned a national design commendation in the prestigious 2019 Dulux Colour Awards.

helping to influence the earthy palette used on the tower’s exterior. But it was the surrounding Kangaroo Point cliffs that were the main point of reference.

“The colour palette, from the very deep, rich reds into the lighter tones, references the fissures and openings of the surrounding cliffs and really embed the building in the landscape of Kangaroo Point,” says Liam, who grew up in Spring Hill and now lives in Bardon.

He says Walan is best described as a “Queenslander in the sky”, making the best of the local climate and lifestyle.

“We thought of each floor like a house in its size and connection to the outside,” he says. “In a nod to the traditional Queenslander, all of the rooms open to a veranda edge, which means they get cross ventilation but still maintain privacy.”

From the Walan project, which is anchored by Mottram’s pioneering Queensland design, Liam and his Bureau Proberts architects are now looking to the future, designing the Australia pavilion for Expo 2020 in Dubai. bureauproberts.com.au

Elina Mottram was born in Sheffield, England, in 1903 and moved with her parents to Brisbane in 1906. She was a student at Nundah State School before going on to study architecture at Brisbane Central Technical College, graduating with a Diploma in Architecture in 1925. Mottram (above) designed the Eagle Junction railway station in Brisbane and also worked in Longreach, where her notable works included the first stage of Longreach Hospital and the Masonic Temple.

During World World II, she became a draftswoman with the American Army Engineering Office in Rockhampton. She died, aged 93, in 1996.

How do I check my breasts?

It’s important to check your breasts regularly. Everyone is a little different and the best person to know what’s ‘normal’ for you, is you. If you’re familiar with how your breasts usually feel, you’ll notice quickly when something isn’t right.

1. Lie down. Right hand examines left breast. Take your left arm behind your head and roll the body slightly towards the right side to centre the nipple and evenly distribute the breast tissue. You can put a folded towel under your left shoulder for support. With all four fingers flat, gently feel around the breast, then the centre/nipple and up into the armpit. Repeat other side.

2. Stand facing a mirror and raise both hands above your head, then place both hands on your hips. Look for symmetry in movement and appearance.

Look at both nipples and the skin.

Examine once a month, 5-7 days after the start of your period is best.

Discuss anything unusual with your GP.

Phil Brown I have always been into this stuff and as a teenager I was steeped in the poetry of the classical Chinese masters If you’re going to escape you might as well really escape. Reading is one way I do that.

My latest vehicle of escape is a book about Ancient China, a subject I have become fascinated with lately.

Now you all know I grew up in Hong Kong and, frankly, I fancy I may have been Chinese in a previous life. I may have been a mandarin, of sorts, a scholarly gent versed in the fine arts as well as bureaucracy. Sounds far fetched? Too bad.

I started down this Ancient China track recently by reading a biography of Confucius, the Chinese philosopher who lived from 479BC to 551BC. He was a fascinating character whose ideas still shape China today. It is a Confucian

society, still, with a Communist twist. The idea of this old guy wandering around the countryside in cool robes with a wispy beard and a bunch of eager disciples intrigues me, and the sheer antiquity of it all is something I love.

The funny thing is that even when Confucius was around he was inspired by the Chinese antiquity that preceded him, which just goes to show how far back their civilisation goes.

Each night now I dip into another biography of him I found in my bookcase (I forgot I had it) and another book about the various dynasties. I am loving being in Ancient China all those years ago. I think my recent visit to Melbourne to see a show

at the National Gallery of Victoria that includes some of those amazing Terracotta Warriors from Xi’an may have helped fuel this current passion for Ancient China.

But I have always been into this stuff and as a teenager I was steeped in the poetry of the classical Chinese masters ...

Li Po, Tu Fu and Wang Wei. And I loved stories of ancients poets and Taoist sages such as Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu. One of my favourite stories is about a famous dream Chuang Tzu had. He dreamt he was a butterfly and when he woke couldn’t work out whether he was a man who had dreamt he was a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming he was a man. This story points to much-explored

philosophical issues stemming from the relationship between the waking state and the dream-state, or between illusion and reality. It’s such a lovely story and I was so enamoured of it when I was a young bloke I had a butterfly tattooed on my left arm.

And no I’m not joking. I really do have a butterfly tattoo on my arm. Not very tough is it? You should have seen the tattooist’s face when I walked in and asked for that.

“Are you sure you don’t want a dragon?” he asked. “Or something more masculine?” It’s only a small tattoo mind you and I guess I was ahead of the curve because everyone has tattoos now, but how many were inspired by a Chinese sage?

Just saying.
