Noosa Food & Wine Festival sneak preview
This week... I have yet to meet a dog who doesn’t love a day at the beach, but I had no idea they were such keen sailors. And I’m not just talking about the odd fishing trip – there are pooches who spend 365 days a year relishing the salt spray in their fur. For this week’s feature (P8), Andrea Ripper spoke with Tanya Rabe, the Brisbane blogger behind Dogs Who Sail, an online community of boat owners who live aboard with their dogs and share tips and stories about life at sea with their cuddly companions. It’s a great read, as is Tanya’s own story, with its sometimes tragic twists and turns that ultimately led to her living happily ever after at Manly, on the 15m cruising yacht Tanua, with her partner, Anthony, and their beloved cocker spaniel, Maxy. See you next week.

THE CHAT
Climate cowboy He can laugh at himself, but when it comes to the environment, scientist Khory Hancock is dead serious Emma Schafer
K
hory Hancock looks good in an Akubra, and he’s not afraid of using his Clint Eastwood-esque charms to promote the cause that’s nearest to his heart: planet Earth. The environmental scientist, who grew up in central Queensland before relocating to the Gold Coast, is known online as the Environmental Cowboy – a passionate advocate for the natural world, with big ideas for sustainability. And in Brisbane this June, Khory (pictured) will join forces with former US vice president Al Gore at a climate change leadership event run by Gore’s Climate Reality Project. The pair will speak and mentor during the three-day program, which trains business and community leaders to become educators and take action with climate solutions. Speaking to Brisbane News from Weipa, on the Gulf of Carpentaria coast, where he is working in water management, Khory says taking the mickey out of himself with his cowboy persona helps him liven up a sometimes dry topic. “It’s a way to communicate scientific and environmental messages more effectively, using humour to inspire and empower people toward well thought out, sustainable and practicable environmental strategies,” he says. Khory works with businesses to improve their environmental footprint. Last year, he was on Fraser Island working with adventure tour company Drop Bear Adventures. “I engaged with

the owner, Hana Robinson, originally to do an environmental awareness video, but that turned into working with her long term to help the company become completely carbon neutral in the fight against climate change.” Khory’s dream is to run a leadership training centre for young people. “My ultimate goal is not to have millions of followers but to create millions of leaders, who will inspire the rapid cultural shift we need to see,” he says. “We have to recreate and reimagine everything we make and do to solve our environmental challenges, and to do that, we have to see the challenges ahead as opportunities and not problems.” A couple of years ago, the scientist made a documentary about the impact of climate change in Queensland, recording his journey with seven young people on a 6000km trip through the Outback to the Great Barrier Reef. “I wanted them to see what climate change had done to the land and ocean first hand, and empower them with their own solutions that they could take into their lives.” Khory’s top tip for anyone wanting to tackle climate change? Spend more time in nature. “Theories suggest that if we are more emotionally connected to something, we are more likely to care and change accordingly,” he says. ome are weekend boaties, others are seasoned sea dogs who’ve circumnavigated the globe. All are loyal companions whose adventures on the high seas have inspired blogger, boat owner and “devoted doggie mum” Tanya Rabe to create Dogs Who Sail, an online community dedicated to seafaring canines. Tanya has always loved dogs, from Bob, the red setter who led her imaginary
circus in her childhood backyard in Murwillumbah, northern NSW, to Maxy, the cocker spaniel who lives with Tanya and her partner, Anthony Burke, 52, aboard their 15m teak Passport cruising yacht Tanua at Manly Boat Harbour. Sailing is a more recent love for the 47year-old, who works in reception at the Manly marina when she is not managing the blog, taking care of Maxy, or planning the June launch of Sloop Dog Designs, her

nautical fashion and accessories label for dogs. It’s a life she loves. “When we are out sailing in the boat, it is hard to imagine any other place I would prefer to be,” Tanya says. “Time loses itself out on the water; there is no need to be anything, anyone or anywhere.” Dogs Who Sail has introduced Tanya to a fleet of fellow dog owners who are keen to share their stories and practical tips about life afloat with pets. “Every day I am
touched by the owners’ devotion to ensuring their dogs have a wonderful life on the boat … and the love for each other’s dogs and circumstances as well,” she says. It was on New Year’s Day in 2016 that Tanya started the blog, which now has almost 1100 followers worldwide. She was inspired by her dogs – Maxy, who, at 15, still bounds along “like he has springs in his paws”, and Mel, a blonde bombshell escape artist who died last year.

CRUISING LIFE ... (clockwise from main) Anthony Burke, Tanya Rabe and Maxy; Sally SailorDog; Max from Manly, who can hear whales coming; Tanya and Mel. Main picture: Russell Shakespeare/AAP
“I was so proud of Maxy and Mel for adapting exceptionally well to boating life, despite being older dogs,” Tanya says. “I wanted to share this with others who were considering having a dog on board, as well as to acknowledge that it’s not always easy, and that there are challenges.” Initially fearful that her dogs would hate being on the water, Tanya says the best advice she has received came from a friend with weimaraners on board, who reminded her that her dogs would be happy as long as they were with her and Anthony. “I have since passed this advice on to many people,” she says, adding the proviso that owners should plan their sailing according to their dogs’ needs and personalities. Back at the marina, Tanya’s day usually starts at 4.45am, with “little doggie paws scampering along the polished teak and holly floorboards”. “It may be early, but we get to see some beautiful sunrises,” she says. Although probably only half a dozen dogs live at the marina, Tanya says she has met others passing through, such as Tippie and Max, who appear on the blog. Other blog stars include Sophie Tucker, the blue heeler who fell overboard from her family’s boat off Mackay in 2008, surviving on a remote island before being reunited with her owners almost half a year later.
These wonderful canines open up new worlds for their owners, supporting bodies, soothing minds, offering a reason to live
And then there’s Sally SailorDog, a red heeler born in 2002 in Kununurra, WA, where her owner, Con, was working. After Con met his partner, Kirsty, Sally moved to Queensland with him and became a farm dog, then a sea dog. A friendly, easygoing ship’s mate, Sally finally crossed “the Rainbow Bridge” on January 23 this year. “It was a fitting end that she was taken into the sea that she loved so much. She disappeared from the boat, but she will
always be sailing with us,” Kirsty says. As Tanya says: “When one of our members says goodbye to their dog, hearts open and the dog is honoured by supporting the owner through their grief. Social media can be an unfaithful arena, where opinion is shared loosely without a thought for consequences. What I love most about Dogs Who Sail is the supportive nature shared by group members.” Dogs Who Sail also features service and support dogs, such as guide dog Dora, who lives on a boat in Boston Harbour, US, with her owner, Pauline Dowell. Pauline has competed in international blind regattas and hopes to put together the first allwomen’s blind team to sail in a 360 nautical mile race, from Massachusetts, US, to Nova Scotia, Canada. “Pauline and Dora are my heroes,” Tanya says. “Dora has been trained to help Pauline around the boat, and she even knows how to take a line in her mouth to secure the boat to the dock. “These wonderful canines open up new worlds for their owners, supporting disabled bodies, soothing minds fraught by PTSD, offering a reason to live for those in deep depression, and providing eyes for the blind to see further than they imagined.” Now Tanya is writing a book, to be published by SisterShip Press in JulyAugust, to give boaties a full picture of the ups and downs of life with dogs on board, from quarantine issues and lack of access at overseas ports, to securing dogs and coping with their anxiety in rough weather, and the common problem of dogs who refuse to excrete on board. “The book is a comprehensive guide on how to have a dog on board, covering practical solutions, fun anecdotes, and support through tougher challenges,” Tanya says. Then there’s her dream of writing a romance novel, as she loves to write and “I just love love”. But wherever the winds take her and her shipboard family, they are part of something greater – a community of likeminded souls sharing their joys, sorrows and everyday moments with Dogs Who Sail.
AHOY THERE ... Maxy aboard the Tanua.
Hope floats Navigating life’s journey hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Tanya Rabe Seventeen years ago, Tanya was enjoying life and pursuing her career in Sydney when a diagnosis of thyroid cancer at the age of 30 turned her life upside down. “I was young, fit and what I thought to be healthy, and I had barely scratched the surface of life,” she says. “After getting through a couple of surgeries to remove the cancer, and undergoing treatment, I walked away from life as I knew it and went to find a dog.” Maxy, a black cocker spaniel, turned out to be her saviour. “I was so confused by my cancer Continued next page

diagnosis, and even more mystified by the existential crisis I was encountering. Adjusting to replacement hormones was taking me for long lonely rides into depression. “Maxy kept me focused. He was my responsibility. I had to walk him, feed him, love him, and in return, he gifted my life with new adventures: road trips up the NSW coastline, camping, beach walks. We became modern gypsies.” Tanya’s journey led her back to the Tweed Coast – she had grown up in Murwillumbah – and work, which meant Maxy needed a companion while she was out. Enter Miss Mel, a “blonde bombshell” golden cocker spaniel. Miss Mel needed adopting as her parents were going overseas, and again Tanya fell in love. Even more serendipitous was her meeting with Anthony Burke one clear summer’s morning in November, when she decided to go for a walk by herself on her favourite beach at Fingal Head. “I remember walking along the beach, enjoying the cool morning sand beneath my feet, and noticing this person in the distance preparing to greet me. It was the strangest feeling, like we had known each other for a thousand years. As I came closer, the familiarity (grew) stronger, but we had never met before.
“Anthony and I talked for 11 hours straight that day. Two strangers became the best of friends as we discovered so many common interests, past and present. “We just fit perfectly together, and there was no doubt that my life was going to change.” They spent the first 18 months catching up on weekends, as Anthony was working full-time as a social worker in Brisbane and Tanya was on the Tweed Coast studying social science and running a therapeutic massage business to help women challenged by depression and anxiety, as well as facilitating a cancer survivors’ support group. They would spend weekends with the two dogs at the Tweed, snorkelling and scuba diving, before Tanya moved to Brisbane to manage a wellness centre. Sailing didn’t enter the picture until they took a trip to Turkey, where Anthony’s father had a boat. They sailed the clear, blue waters of some of the world’s most ancient waterways – Cleopatra’s Bath, the Sunken City, and the Blue Grotto of Kastellorizo – stopping each day at villages. “It was on this trip that we both fell in love with sailing,” Tanya (pictured) says. About a year later, the novice sailors found themselves shopping for their first sailboat, a 10m Crossroads. “There was part of me that thought we
It was the strangest feeling, like we had known each other for a thousand years
were crazy, but there was another part of me that had a louder voice saying, ‘Live for today’. As a cancer survivor, I have adopted a philosophy that reminds me to go out and live my life,” she says. Then in 2013, Tanya was rocked by a second cancer diagnosis – this time melanoma. “Again, I found myself sitting across from a doctor barely listening to his diagnosis, instead watching a flood of images run through my mind of missed opportunities. Ironically, cancer is a great motivator. It forces you to face truths and to live your life honestly.” This was when another lifeline appeared – in the form of a beautiful boat “built to explore the world” that they would pass as they sailed out of the harbour on weekends. One day there was a “For sale” sign on it. Not knowing whether they would be able to sail such a big boat, they took the plunge and bought the 15m cruising yacht Tanua. “I was in my early 40s and not about to let more of my life pass me by and find myself one day counting my regrets as the clock ticked toward the end,” Tanya says. Since then, they have cruised past Fraser Island and seen whales in Hervey Bay and scenic Pancake Creek north of 1770. On weekends, they explore Moreton Bay, from Coochiemudlo to Moreton and Bribie islands, depending on the winds. “We are truly blessed,” Tanya says.

LIFE
Brooke Falvey Sweet Caroline is my favourite, although possibly no longer favoured by my ex, who received a voicemail of me singing it while drunk If there is one song that’s guaranteed to get me on a dance floor, it’s Run to Paradise by The Choirboys. This song’s power over me was most famously displayed during a “quiet” night out when I lived in London. It started harmlessly enough – I’d gone to the Walkabout (an Australian-themed pub) to watch the State of Origin, celebrate my birthday, and have dinner with mates – and I was on my way out the door when the opening notes began to play. The Choirboys had barely reached the end of the first line before I’d dropped my bag and bolted for the dance floor.
The reason I mention this is because I recently received a wedding invitation in which the RSVP card asked guests to include the name of a song that will get them on the dance floor. For me, it was a no-brainer – Run to Paradise was ALWAYS going to be the one – but the request got me thinking about what songs I’d feature on a soundtrack to my life. Some choices are easy: All My Loving by The Beatles reminds me of my dad, while mum gets I Just Called To Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder. Johnny Logan’s 1987 Eurovision winner,
Hold Me Now, reminds me of my brother – although I have no idea why because I was only five and he wasn’t born until the following year – while Murder on the Dancefloor was playing when I met my best friend. My time in London is marked by Amy Winehouse’s Valerie, while Sweet Caroline is my all-time favourite song, having played during a family holiday in Fiji and been sung at karaoke in Florence. That song has basically featured on high rotation on every iPod/iPhone I’ve owned. Although, it’s possibly no longer favoured by my ex, who received a three-minute
voicemail of me singing it while drunk. Having said that, I despise Superstition (his favourite song), so we’re even. And then there are the songs that remind me of the men I’ve loved, lusted after, or now loathe: Sunsets (Powderfinger); Can’t Take My Eyes Off You (Frankie Valli); Flame Trees (Cold Chisel); Kokomo (The Beach Boys); and Turn Me On (Kevin Lyttle). Finally, I’d wrap it all up with the theme song to The Muppets, because it’s impossible to listen to that song without smiling (or singing along). Speaking of which, I’m going to listen to it now.

RESTAURANT
High steaks Get your beef on in the best possible way at this temple to Italy’s chianina cattle RESTAURANT Tony Harper The largest breed of cattle on the planet is the chianina. It’s Italian. The biggest of the males stretch to 2m to the wither and weigh more than 1½ tonnes. They are heavier than a clydesdale – and my car. Just. Initially bred as a draught animal, they are now almost exclusively raised for the meat that’s the primary ingredient in one of Tuscany’s most celebrated dishes, bistecca alla fiorentina. Until yesterday, I’d never had the pleasure of tasting it. In fact, the whole chianina/fiorentina thing had flown well below my radar. Today, I’m a convert. Victoria’s Gippsland is home to Isola Chianina, a breeder of these fabulous bovines: sustainably farmed, exclusively pasture fed, all the boxes ticked. And Florentine’s – Gianni Greghini’s latest operation – specialises in bistecca fiorentina using Isola Chianina meat. And boy, how good is that? While I’m on the subject of good things, here’s a word on hospitality. The kitchen closes at 3pm on a Saturday, and I know this isn’t going to work – I have commitments. So I call to see if I can order over the phone, arrive at 2.30, and eat quickly. The restaurant manager stays behind; the chef stays behind – until well after closing time.
HOT PLATE ... Forget pasta, the focus at Florentine Italian Grill is on chianina beef.
FLORENTINE ITALIAN GRILL AND WINE ROOM 5 Kyabra Street, Newstead Ph: 3180 4466 Chef: Frederico Tettamanzi Lunch Fri-Sat; dinner Tue-Sat Vegetarian options Eftpos and major cards On-street parking SCORES OUT OF 10 Food: 8.5 Drinks: 8 Vibe: 7 Service: 8.5 I’m being a royal pain in the butt, yet they make me and my guests feel like kings. And we eat a lot of meat. Like kings. It’s not all meat based – there are scallops and prawns, market fish, and a decent bunch of vegetarian dishes scattered amid the primal fare. But, seriously, this is a beef restaurant.
Take, for example, a starter of stuffed olives with a side dish of aioli ($16). Guess what stuffs them? Chianina beef, of course. Or chianina tartare ($27, inset) with a tiny quail yolk in a half-shell, baby basil leaves, some artful dots of rocket extract and something white, and a couple of toasted wedges. It’s brilliant.
Chef adds a bowl of chianina ragu, shaved parmesan and toasted ciabatta. It beats the pants off the rest. But the main event is, of course, the bistecca fiorentina. We are offered two sizes – both grandiose – rib on the bone or a T-bone. It’s $20 for 100 grams and we rack up just short of a kilo (yep, that’s a $200 steak). It’s way too much, but it is just the sort of stuff that lifts my pulse rate. The steak is done over charcoal, brushed and dusted with herbs, served with quarters of roasted potato … perfectly crunchy on the outside, fluffy in the middle. It’s so simple, yet so delicious. There are other steaks for those who, for some inexplicable reason, don’t want to try this special from Florence, Italy. But why fiddle with a winner? Unless, of course, you are dining solo, or even at a table of two. It takes three or more to tackle the fiorentina, but surely most of us can gather three friends for the simple pleasure of tackling this Tuscan classic.

RECIPE
Pucker up SALAD OF SCALLOPS, LIME, SOY AND CHILLI DRESSING
Add some lipsmacking flavour to your weeknight routine with chef Daniel Jarrett’s seafood sensation
INGREDIENTS 2 roma tomatoes 2 tsp sea salt 4 garlic cloves, unpeeled 20ml thin soy sauce 10ml lime juice ½ tsp chilli flakes 1 tbs vegetable oil 4 Hervey Bay scallops ½ cup mint leaves, torn, loosely packed ½ cup coriander leaves, loosely packed ½ cup green shallots, finely sliced on a 3cm-long angle 1 tsp roasted ground sticky rice Chilli to taste
METHOD Cut the roma tomatoes in quarters lengthways. Cover the cut sides with sea salt. Place on a rack and leave overnight. Place the tomatoes cut side down into a wok on low heat, then add the garlic cloves. Dry char in wok but do not burn. When cooked, the garlic will be tender. Remove and peel the garlic. Place in a mortar and pestle with the tomatoes. Gently pound the garlic and bruise the tomatoes. Add the thin soy sauce, lime juice and chilli flakes. Gently combine. To cook the scallops, place the vegetable oil in a pan and allow it to become hot. Season one side of the scallops with a little salt then place in the pan. Cook hard on one side for about 1 to 2 mins, then turn and cook on the other side for 30 secs. In a bowl, combine the mint, coriander and shallots and gently combine with the dressing. To serve, thinly slice the scallops into 3 or 4 slices, mix through the salad, and garnish with roasted ground sticky rice and slices of chilli. PORTRAIT
Time of her life
ON A ROLE … Bridie McKim (main) stars in the ABC’s new series The Heights (above).
Bridie McKim wasn’t about to let cerebral palsy derail her dream of becoming an actor Fiona Purdon
B
ridie McKim just happened to be with her biggest fans when she received the life-changing phone call to say she had landed her “dream job”. The Brisbane actor was in the car with her family on the way to celebrate her birthday in Sandgate last year when she heard she had won the role of Sabine in the new ABC drama series The Heights. “My whole family heard it happen. Everyone did a big cheer and then started crying,” Bridie recalls.
The news was even sweeter for Bridie herself. Suffering from mild cerebral palsy, she embarked on her acting journey knowing she faced long odds to succeed. “Visibility is a powerful thing and when you don’t see disability on screen, you don’t think you can do it,” she says. “I knew things wouldn’t be easy; you have to work harder than anyone else for people to take you seriously.” But Bridie’s hard work has paid off. After securing a position in the Queensland Theatre Company’s youth ensemble while
still at school and then starring in the short film Gimpsey (2016), she won a coveted spot at NIDA in Sydney when she was 19. Still based in Sydney, Bridie, 22, graduated at the end of last year, juggling her third-year NIDA studies with filming The Heights in Perth. When she heard the show featured a lead character with cerebral palsy, Bridie knew she had to go all out to snare the role of “sassy’’ Sabine, the only daughter of a single mum who works as a doctor at the local hospital.
The show’s action centres around the inner-city Arcadia Heights community, including the hospital, pub, and the school Sabine attends. “It’s an incredible role, and surreal to think there was a cerebral palsy role. Before the audition, I had to contain my excitement,’’ she admits. “My character is very sassy, she can be abrasive and she speaks her mind. I’m a bit like her, but she’s a lot cooler than me. It’s inspiring to play a role like that as a young disabled woman.” Bridie is one of triplets who were born 10 weeks premature. She was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 18 months, but her siblings – her best friends and biggest supporters – do not have the condition. Bridie says trying to keep up with brother Jackson and sister Lauren helped make her more determined in life. “A lot of my identity, especially as a kid, stems from being a triplet. I was not treated any differently by my parents and my peers, so I had the same confidence and same expectations of myself,” she says. Bridie’s prodigious talent was spotted and encouraged by her Year 7 drama teacher at Mt St Michael’s in Ashgrove, where she became college captain. “I didn’t set out to be a role model; I set out because I love acting and I love my job,” she says. “I would love to give Hollywood a go one day.” The Heights, ABC TV, 8.30pm Fri, until April 12, then returns in July. STAR CROSSED … Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse star in Five Feet Apart.
Director: Justin Baldoni Starring: Haley Lu Richardson, Cole Sprouse
‘Gardens with Story Bridge’ 76.5 x 101cm
Instead of feuding families, this contemporary Romeo and Juliet are separated by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the high likelihood of cross-infection. On a scale of romantic obstacles, it would be hard to top cystic fibrosis – or CF, as it is referred to here. Directed by Justin Baldoni, Five Feet Apart tells the story of a young woman who grapples valiantly with the limitations of her illness – until she falls for a bad boy who encourages her to take a few risks. Stella Grant (Richardson) is doing everything she can to cheat death. That includes swallowing a whole lot of medication, feeding herself green mush through a stomach tube, sucking in mucus-loosening vapour, and wearing a phlegm-inducing
V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
vibration vest. She approaches this punishing daily regimen with a discipline that borders on obsession, while systematically working her way through a series of “to do” lists, which include a regular vlog, reading the complete works of Shakespeare, and developing an app that supports patients with their medication. Will Newman (Sprouse) takes a more fatalistic approach to the genetic disorder. Dark and a little brooding, he’s made a kind of peace with the persona of a tragic artist – so it seems. In Stella’s earthy enthusiasm, Will finds a glimmer of hope. He teaches her how to live a little in return. The film’s title refers to a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation guideline that patients be kept at least six feet (1.8 metres) apart to lower the risk of cross-infection. When Stella “steals” a foot back from her illness, it’s her measured way of challenging its limitations. The latest in a string of strong YA
sick-lit romances – including The Fault In Our Stars and Me Before You – Five Feet Apart follows a fairly standard template with due care and attention. The climactic frozen lake crisis stretches audience credulity to breaking point, although it does echo Romeo and Juliet’s deathbed drugpotion scene. Cystic fibrosis sufferers and their families may also have issues with the way the cruel condition is portrayed here, such as the protagonists’ tragic beauty. But the film successfully sucks its audience into the insular hothouse of a long-term hospital ward, and the drama and tension inherent in the characters’ plight is sustained by a strong and empathetic performance by Richardson. There’s a reason why these intensely emotional stories are so popular with young adults at a time when they are examining the big questions and experiencing life in extremes.
FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY (M) hhhjj Director: Stephen Merchant Starring: Florence Pugh, Dwayne Johnson, Lena Headey Dwayne Johnson knows a good wrestling story when he sees one. The former WWE champ developed this underdog sports comedy with writer-director Stephen Merchant, co-creator of The Office, after stumbling across a 2012 documentary about its characters on UK television. Fighting With My Family is based on the true story of Saraya-Jade Bevis – ring name Paige – who, at 21, became the youngest woman ever to win a Divas Championship title. Born to a family of wrestling nuts who run a down-atheel competition in Norwich, England, Saraya is hooked from the age of 13. In the film, she is played with pierced, Gothic doggedness by Florence Pugh (above). Nick Frost plays her father; Jack Lowden, her brother; and Lena Headey – aka Game of Thrones’ Cersei Lannister – is her mother, Julia. Alone on the US training circuit, Saraya struggles with the unfamiliar fighting and performance styles, and she struggles to fit in. But when she does eventually appear on WWE’s main roster, her debut packs a wallop. Like the characters it celebrates, this knockabout comedy is a little rough around the edges, but its heart is in the right place.

n the olden days, people used to do what was known as The Grand Tour as part of their education. We’re talking the 17th and 18th centuries, when young men and women of sufficient means travelled to Europe to become educated and partake in the wonders of art, architecture and antiquity. It’s a nice idea, and people are still doing it, in their own way. Brisbane artist David Henderson did it when he was young, and at 59, he’s still doing it. It sustains his art, but it’s also partly professional because he takes tours for ASA (Australians Studying Abroad) and often stays on for his own artistic purposes. These trips result in an annual exhibition in Brisbane (although last year he exhibited in Sydney instead for the first time), and his latest is on now at Graydon Gallery in New Farm. It’s a chance for those of us who haven’t quite managed The Grand Tour in recent years to do it vicariously through David’s work, which is tantalising, to say the least. Just looking at his painting Forum of Caesar makes you want to book a holiday immediately. This Roman ruin is impressive, and this painting features it partly in shadow. As David explains, he has painted the same subjects time and time again at different times of the day with different light and conditions, so he never gets sick of them. David has lectured on, or led, more than 40 specialist tours to France, Italy, England and the US, and he has more coming up soon. He will do a Gardens of Italy tour, followed by a tour entitled Exploring the Literary Landscapes of England, then later in the year, he’ll visit southern Italy and Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. “I feel enormously fortunate to do something that is so stimulating,” David says. “Being an artist is a solitary business so it’s nice to have these tours, to spend time with people and to travel.” Italy has become his second home, and Venice is a constant source of inspiration. There are Venetian scenes in this exhibition, as well as Roman ones. But it’s not all about his trips abroad. David is not immune to the charms of his home town, Brisbane, a place he came to as a boy after spending his early years on a sheep station near Longreach. He loves the light and locales of his own natural habitat, and there are works featuring Brisbane in this show, and also some of his beloved South Stradbroke Island. From luminous Venice to luminous Brisbane, it’s not that far in the imagination of David Henderson, who, with the aid of his sketchbooks, distils his travels into paintings in his Albion studio to reveal them to us each year. As he’s doing now. David Henderson Landscapes – Venice, Rome & Queensland, until Mar 31, Graydon Gallery, 29 Merthyr Rd, New Farm. visualartist.info/davidhenderson

I LOVE MY PHONE, BUT…!!! Whether it be a desktop computer, tablet, e-reader or smart phone, most of us use one or more digital devices every day. They are wonderful tools that make our lives better in many ways, but there are some drawbacks. Because we often use these devices for long periods without a break, or hold them quite close to our eyes, they can cause Computer Vision Syndrome. Symptoms include eyestrain and headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, or neck and shoulder pain. The blue light emitted by many devices adds to these symptoms, and can also disrupt our body clock, causing sleeplessness. Anti-fatigue lenses provide focussing support for the eyes and reduce the amount of blue light that reaches the retina, thus reducing digital eyestrain. Good visual habits can also help. You can follow the 20/20 rule, taking a 20 second break to look 20 metres away every 20 minutes. You can also make sure that you don’t hold a device too close to the eyes – no closer than a school ruler-length is a good guide. At The Eyewear Shop we can examine your eyes to find out whether your symptoms are caused by Computer Vision Syndrome, and tailor a solution for your lifestyle needs.

F
orget about a red convertible or a Harley-Davidson, when Barbara Spooner had her midlife crisis, she was on a bicycle feeling like “sausage meat squeezed into Lycra”. The self-employed graphic designer loved cycling with her fiance, Michael Ryder, 54, but finding flattering activewear was like riding Mt Coot-tha on flat tires. “I would try on cycling pants and found I couldn’t pull them past my knees. I am a size 14 and would have to buy a 3XL in the standard cycling brands, and then I’d still be squished in like a sausage,” the 56-yearold from Tarragindi says of the moment in 2015 when inspiration struck. “I wanted to feel comfortable and stylish when I went for a ride, and I thought, how hard can this be? I’m going to come up with my own range of cycling gear for women of all sizes – lumps, bumps and all!” So Barbara set about designing her first range and, in 2017, Birds on Bikes took flight. Using a “perfect mix” of polyamide microfibre and Lycra, Barbara made flattering jerseys, shirts, jackets, bike pants and cycling knicks to cater to all women. Last year, she joined a Fashion360 Accelerator program, run by QUT Creative Enterprise Australia, and the business picked up pace. “I think I’d still have been plodding along if I hadn’t done the accelerator,” she says. “This is my midlife crisis. When I think about the future and ahead to when I will be 60, I don’t like the idea of not working and not chasing a passion. I didn’t like the look of that future so I changed it.” The program finished in August last year with a runway show, and Barbara’s

Birds on Bikes is much more than a range of women’s cycling apparel, it’s friendship, it’s laughs, it’s tears, it’s coffee, it’s a glass of wine, it’s a cheer, and it’s often a hug. It’s a community.” In April, the latest Birds on Bikes collection, Wild Weekends, will strut the catwalk at Pedal Power Street Style in
West End. The Brisbane Cycling Festival (March 28-April 14) event includes an athletic wear runway show and a panel discussion with local cycling legends. You’ll have no trouble spotting Barbara’s range – it will be the one covered in technicolor gumnuts and cockatoos designed in collaboration with Brisbane artist Tina Dinte. “Artist collaborations will be a key element in the future of Birds on Bikes,” she says. “It adds something special and keeps it Australian, as well as supporting local artists.”
The sky’s the limit now for this bird and her bike. “I’d like to design more of an offthe-bike range. A lot of the ladies who buy my gear are going on touring bike rides, so a range of gear that you could wear off the bike would be awesome,” she says. “The plan is for Birds on Bikes to be my full-time gig and to launch the range offshore in the UK and US this year.” Pedal Power Street Style, Apr 5, Vacant Assembly, 266 Montague Rd, West End. It takes a village Noosa’s famous food and wine festival is about to take over the town. Here’s where to eat, stay and play for the ultimate gourmet getaway Chantay Logan
V
isit Noosa any day of the year to experience a destination that punches above its weight in the food stakes. But visit in the leadup to its most famous feast and the epicurean excitement is palpable. With the Noosa Food & Wine Festival scheduled to take over the town from May 16-20, I enjoyed a gourmet getaway to whet the appetite. While much of the action this year is conveniently concentrated in Festival Village, it reaches beyond the beach. I begin my adventure in Noosaville, where lunch at the ideally located Noosa Boathouse is always a treat. I nibble on Fraser Isle spanner crab salad with water lapping at my feet, the floating restaurant’s glass frontage serving up a fitting view. The venue’s Line Caught Grass Fed collaboration on May 17 promises to be even more special. Chef Shane Bailey can’t hide his glee at the prospect of night fishing with a few good mates … Ben O’Donoghue, Nick Holloway and Noosa Boathouse’s commercial fisherman and chef Sean “Snapper” White. The culinary crew will line-catch the fish that will feature in the fourcourse feast, and Shane is envisioning a hero’s welcome – perhaps a grand arrival by sea – triumphantly waving any combination of cobia, jewfish, kingfish, trevally or snapper. Even knowing what a fickle mistress the ocean can be doesn’t dampen his enthusiasm – he has a “Plan B”, although a magician never reveals his secrets. Noosa Boathouse’s long lunch has historically been one of the most popular with locals, but it’s not the only coveted ticket. As the “sold out” signs start to go up (two of the signature events were so popular, expressions of interest were conducted by ballot), it pays to have friends with culinary connections. And Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort fits the bill. It happens to be in possession of sold-out passes to both the opening and closing parties, which will go to guests who buy one of a limited number of festival accommodation packages. Sofitel is hosting several events, but you 26 BRISBANE NEWS March 27-April 2, 2019
don’t need an occasion to get swept up in the resort’s French-inspired fervour for the good life. They snare me early at the breakfast buffet, which includes a chef-tended crepe station, where repeat investigation of the lemon and sugar specialty threatens to knock me out of appetite action for the rest of the day. They keep me hooked as I sit semisubmerged at the swim-up bar and sip neon spritzers and lift a lazy finger to beckon poke bowls poolside. The temptation even follows me back to my plush room, where I devour the room-service chocolate dessert while wrapped in a robe. If there weren’t so many dining delights on the doorstep, I doubt I’d bother breaking the cycle, but I’m here to give you a snapshot of local flavour. The brief stroll down Hastings St – past fairylight-wrapped trees and the happy hum of busy restaurants – and up an intriguing flight of foliagescreened stairs brings me to El Capitano Pizzeria and Bar. A favourite for its organic sourdough pizza bases and edgy cocktails, the hip hangout also boasts a charcuterie and mozzarella cabinet that’s ideal for grazing. Freshly shucked oysters are another treasure so I order a plump, creamy dozen from Stradbroke – even more precious for their short season. On the second night of my stay, I sample modern Italian eatery Bombetta, one of the restaurant’s contributing to the weekend spread at Festival Village. It’s a few minutes’ drive from the Hastings bubble, at Noosa Junction. Owner Pascal Turschwell graduated from Hastings St with the goal of creating a comforting, keenly priced menu that could be enjoyed every night of the week. If only. While I’ve packed as much as I can physically stomach into a two-day visit, festival-goers have a far bigger task ahead of them. Fortunately, roomy kaftans are still the dress de rigueur in this very satisfying slice of heaven.

Jason says. “We thought of the landscape areas alongside internal rooms as places to occupy and move through during the course of the day.” The house is arranged in an “L” shape around a private garden that combines with the neighbours’ vegetation to create a new outlook. Timber steps connect the interior with a long north-facing patio on the edge of the lawn. “The single-room depth gives good access to light and ventilation ... and maintains a feeling of connectedness,”

FAR FLUNG … The house’s linear properties boost connectivity by enabling long glimpses through the building from one area to others.

Jason says. “The L-shaped plan also facilitates more direct connections. You can see and call out to people across the courtyard.” A skylight running the length of the northern edge delivers a soft ambience to the interior and balances outside glare from outside. The sitting, dining, kitchen and rumpus room are arranged in a linear fashion below a sloping roof that falls from two storeys at the street to a single storey at the back of the house.
A staircase at the juncture of the upstairs sitting room and downstairs dining room brings a sense of occasion to moving around the dwelling. “The split level makes for some interesting spatial relationships within the house. Glimpses up or down to other spaces and occupants frame those interactions in a dynamic way,” Jason says. “Combined with the part-height walls, compact areas feel spacious due to the long glimpses through the building.” Striking a balance between separation
and connection was critical to creating a harmonious living environment for Steve, Lynette and their three children. “The open plan means we can all stay very well connected, despite doing our individual things,” Steve says. “Sitting at the breakfast bar, I can look out to the garden while eating my Weet-Bix, and also keep an eye on each of the kids’ three bedroom doors to see who isn’t up yet. This is an advantage of the L-shape.” Material and textural details familiar to the vintage suburb are playfully
introduced in contemporary ways. Around the fireplace, front door and sitting room, stack-bond bricks and breeze blocks bring a sense of 1960s nostalgia. Vintage motifs return in the staircase, which has become a visual centrepiece. “While the house is deliberately full of idiosyncratic details, the staircase at the centre is a favourite,” Jason says. “It was a chance to explore pattern in the detailing of the steel balustrade in response to the house’s mid-century suburban setting.”

LAST WORD
Phil Brown In my teens, I used to take long walks in the evening, during which I would ponder the meaning of life. Talk about pretentious I’ve taken to going for long walks again lately. My initial inspiration was reading how walking can flatten your tummy, and of course it’s good for your heart. I’m just walking around the neighbourhood and through a local park at this stage, but I’m enjoying it. And it’s free. For some years I had kind of stopped doing it. I was too busy, I thought, but, of course, that was just an excuse. I happen to like walking, and it’s good for generating ideas. A lot of writers have found inspiration while walking. Charles Dickens was a compulsive walker who roamed all over London. That gave him a keen insight into how people lived, enabled him to work
32 BRISBANE NEWS March 27-April 2, 2019
on ideas as he went, and kept him fit, I imagine. Beethoven liked a good stroll too, as did Goethe. And I recall reading that P. G. Wodehouse, the creator of Jeeves, was a walker, so I figure I’m in good company. Walking around dusk is particularly pleasant, but I like to wander at night too. When I was in my late teens, I used to take long walks in the evening, during which I would ponder the meaning of life. I used to smoke my pipe as I went, and I had a cane too. Talk about pretentious! My mother bought me the pipe because she thought it would be better for me than cigarettes. All I needed was a deerstalker hat and the picture would have been complete.
When we lived at Albert Park in Melbourne in the early 1990s, my wife and I used to walk around that gracious suburb after work, enjoying those longish Melbourne twilights. We would usually end up on Kerferd Road Pier getting our heads blown off by the sea breezes – more like a bloody gale most days. When we moved back to Brisbane, we lived in Spring Hill, which is a great suburb for walking, particularly on weekends. It’s very quiet then, and there are lots of hills, so you get good exercise. I like walking, and I have a hankering to do more of it. In particular, I want to go and walk Hadrian’s Wall in the UK to soak up
the history. There’s an added attraction there … I believe the area is fairly flat. The biggest walk I have ever done was trekking in the Himalayas, which wasn’t so much a walk as a trudge. I mean, I knew the Himalayas were high, but I didn’t realise they were that high. Taking in breathtaking scenery as I lagged behind my bride-to-be and the porter – swearing all the while – I eventually managed to complete the trek, although I did stop at one point, refusing to go on. I felt better the next day and continued, albeit reluctantly, the profanities echoing from mountain to mountain. So romantic.

Well positioned for the
riverfront Renovated Norman Park residence hits the market Aria Property Group founder Tim Forrester and his wife Mackenzie are selling their stunning riverfront house at Norman Park. The developer, responsible for a number of high-end, award-winning residential towers in Brisbane, was founded by Tim in 2003, but it was Mackenzie who led the charge when it came to renovating their own home at 30 Wendell St, Norman Park. “I am from the US and grew up visiting my grandparents in California,” she says.
“I have always loved the architecture there, the mix of Spanish and regency styles, and my favourite, mid-century modern. “It was so fun to bring luxury to this original home by opening up the views, adding gorgeous finishes, palm trees and upgrading the key living areas.’’ The couple bought the four-bedroom riverfront property in 2013, but are now selling after purchasing a sprawling mansion at Fig Tree Pocket. Speaking about the first time she laid eyes on the Norman Park house, Mackenzie says she saw its potential and could not wait to make it a home. “It was this feeling of driving down the

hill and arriving at this Riviera-feeling place, not typical of Brisbane,” she says. “The view, the double reach of the river, the angle of the skyline, and the green space of New Farm Park.” The two-storey, California-inspired house sits on an 888sq m block and is framed by manicured gardens and palm trees. The lower level consists of a second living room with its original tile flooring, vintage light fixtures and a retro fashioned kitchenette. The upper level is home to the living spaces plus three bedrooms including the carpeted main bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, complete with double vanities and a large shower.
Riverside attraction There’s a lot to love about this stunning apartment, nestled by the river in Kangaroo Point. Occupying the fourth floor of the award-winning Mon Reve River Apartments complex, the 203sq m residence is immaculately presented and embraces enviable views across the Brisbane River and Story Bridge. Inside, neutral-toned walls and floors adorn the property, while an outdoor fireplace is a standout feature. With striking white cabinetry, ample storage, a breakfast bar and stainless steel appliances of the highest quality, the openplan kitchen takes pride of place in the home, seamlessly blending out towards an entertaining deck outside through sliding glass doors. A thoughtful use of glass throughout the apartment allows for glimpses of the idyllic riverside location from multiple angles. There is a huge focus on outdoor dining and entertaining, with two separate decks, one with reclaimed Spotted Gum external feature walls. Two bedrooms are conveniently positioned at opposite ends of the property
for privacy, each with direct access to a balcony. The main bedroom is treated to idyllic river views, and is complemented by a luxurious ensuite along with a generous walk-in wardrobe, while the second bedroom is fitted with a built-in wardrobe and serviced by an additional modern bathroom.
