I’m basking in the cinnamonscented goodness of winning the neighbour lottery Neighbours can make or break your living situation. Whether you own or rent, it doesn’t matter; none of us has any say over who moves in next door so when you get a good neighbour it’s like winning the lottery. I write this on Sunday morning with the sun streaming in, a cup of coffee next to the keyboard and the aroma of handmade apple Danishes warming in the oven. The flaky golden pastries are a gift from a newish next-door neighbour who runs two excellent coffee shops in the inner-city. So yes, I’m basking in the cinnamonscented goodness of winning the neighbour

lottery.Yesterday I arrived home late to find a tray of treats on the doorstep with a note: “Oops, I baked too many today. Warm them up and enjoy for breakfast.” Um, let me think about it for a second … Absolutely! It’s the second time our lovely neighbour has shared her outstanding hospo leftovers. We know she makes them from scratch so she’s clearly a talented baker, but apart from her and her partner’s names we know little else. We’ve chatted a few times when we’ve crossed paths in the parking garage but that’s it. My parents-in-law are also first-division

winners of neighbour lotto. They’ve been away for a couple of months – a longawaited trip to the UK to see friends and tour England’s prettiest towns – so Guy has regularly been popping over to their house to check everything’s OK. Each time he does, he bumps into Max who lives in the house next to his folks. Max delivers a full report on what’s been happening in their quiet street and whether there’s been any rain. Max is keeping an eye on things too. It’s what quality neighbours do, you see. Other things great neighbours do is invite you over when they make a

giant paella and reveal where to get the best coffee within walking distance when you move in. What they don’t do is shout at you for adding an electrical circuit-breaker box above the front door of your 90-year-old apartment or write multi-page poison-pen letters in response to requests to use their own parking spot instead of yours. Like I said earlier, none of us has any say over who our neighbours are and I’ve encountered a few nightmares along the way. It only makes the gift of pastries on the doorstep even sweeter.

Ain’t it grand A New York landmark inspired Sally Taylor’s design for Brisbane’s newest restaurant Hannah Davies

tanding in Fortitude Valley’s new eatery Beaux Rumble, Sally Taylor is pleased as punch. And it’s easy to see why. The venue’s domed ceilings, marble flooring and Art Deco-style glazing are all reminiscent of New York City’s Grand Central Station – one of Sally’s favourite structures and her inspiration for this particular design project. Elements of the landmark’s myriad hidden pockets are evident across Beaux Rumble’s terrace, main dining room, private dining suites and even the oakfloored bathrooms. The Sydney-based interior designer says she fixed on the concept after some creative brainstorming. The two-level restaurant in Ada Lane, which adjoins The Calile Hotel, was spearheaded by Darkhorse Hospitality Group (Pony Dining) and Michelin-starred chef Alan Wise, originally from Victoria. “One of the key elements of Beaux Rumble is that they are cooking over wood and that got me thinking about going down an industrial path with the interior,” Sally explains. “Then I thought that would be too masculine and timber-based which wasn’t appropriate for the Brisbane aesthetic. I started thinking about what else relies on fire and that took me to trains and then finally to Grand Central Station. “What stuck for me about it is that the terminal is filled with so many different spaces to explore and so is Beaux Rumble. When you walk in it doesn’t scream that you are in Grand Central Station but the cues are all there. “The dining room has a romantic feel and is great for a candlelight dinner with your partner, while the terrace is perfect for

post-shopping drinks and nibbles with girlfriends.” A keen traveller, the 35-yearold has always had a soft spot for New York and is itching to return. “When I’m there I really do immerse myself in the city. It’s changing all the time and there is always so much to discover. It’s like it has its own heartbeat. “When I was researching Grand Central Station I couldn’t help but get a little lost in it – there is just so much magic.” The mum-of-two, whose clients have included Sydney restaurants Felix and Mr. Wong, says she was always destined for a career in design. “I grew up in a family who were in the furniture industry and being surrounded by design as a child my love of interiors developed at a very early age – I always had a childhood opinion about our home that Mum and Dad had to endure.” She earned her degree in interior design at University of Technology Sydney and has since clocked up 16 years in the industry – and won several awards. In 2013 she launched her own design studio, s.t.udio , and hasn’t looked back. “Hospitality and retail work is what I love the most. I just have so much fun with the whole concept creation,” she says. “I also love the travel and would encourage anyone who wants to do interior design to get out and about because it enables you to get into the heart and the culture of a place. Talk of the town They’re living the American dream in the world’s country music capital, and Brisbane’s Dozzi sisters couldn’t be happier Emma Schafer

PERFECT HARMONY… Jesse, Nina and Andrea Dozzi have found a second home and acclaim playing to fans in Nashville.

laying country music was never just a hobby for Brisbane’s Dozzi sisters. Music is in their blood, the stage is their second home, and playing to adoring fans at Nashville’s iconic music halls has always been the dream. And now they are living it. In 2016 Andrea, 35, Jesse, 34 and Nina Dozzi, 30, packed up their instruments, “bit the bullet”, and moved to the country music capital of the world. Four years later the sisters say they are feeling more at home than ever. The trio released their first Nashvilleproduced single in June – a country-pop love anthem called Fools. A jar of Vegemite makes a sneaky cameo in the music video as a homage to home. It was followed in August by a second single, Ramones T-Shirt, which critics decreed “delivers a girl power punch”. Fools reached the right ears and within a week, cult music magazine Rolling Stone gave it a shout-out as one of its “10 best country songs to hear now”. But the golden moments have not been achieved without some serious setbacks. Only six months after moving to Nashville the sisters, who grew up at Fig Tree Pocket with three other siblings, lost almost everything they owned in an apartment fire. “We moved here with two suitcases and had just finished buying everything down to beds and forks and knives then three weeks later we lost it all,” Dozzi guitarist Jesse says. The disaster devastated the independent band who do everything from writing their own songs to folding and selling their own promotional T-shirts before and after gigs. “But it never crossed our minds to give up and move home. We already gave up

everything to come here. We just knew deep down we’d get through it.” The daughters of musician parents Mark and Sharon Dozzi, the sisters couchsurfed for a while before new friends, and family back home, helped them back on their feet. They now live in three separate apartments all within the same building. “I’m still trying to restock my wardrobe, but hey we have beds,” keyboardist Nina laughs. Andrea on the mandolin completes Dozzi in which all three sisters sing. “It’s definitely a hard market to crack here in Nashville, but so far we just want to get on people’s radar and for people to hear our music,” Jesse says. “For someone from Rolling Stone to say what you’re making is not crap is pretty fricken awesome.” That coup usurped the band’s old “career highlight”– playing Ipswich country musical festival CMC Rocks in 2015 alongside headliners Lady Antebellum, Kacey Musgraves and Troy Cassar-Daley.

They also had scored the number one slot with their single, I Need You Tonight on the Australian Country Music Charts in 2013, and twice took out Australian Country Music People’s Choice Awards for best video at Tamworth. Even as youngsters, the sisters were always keen to put on a show. In the early ’90s, Jesse, Andrea and two of their cousins performed their first unofficial gig dressed as elves. “We literally had a boom box on a trolley and we’d walk around Carindale shopping centre singing carols. We had the time of our lives,” Jesse laughs. It wasn’t until the older sisters saw Nina

perform a song at her Centenary State High School graduation that she was admitted into the band that eventually become Dozzi. Nina became the lyricist to Jesse’s musicianship and Andrea’s showmanship. But from the relative isolation of Brisbane, Dozzi struggled to crack the international market. “Going to America was always the dream,” Jesse says, adding that growing up in a musical household helped fuel their passion. Their parents formed the band Small Torque, playing covers and original music, in the 1980s and the girls remember recording the TV show Video Hits to help their mum learn lyrics. “Shania Twain, Man! I Feel Like a Woman! I remember it like it was yesterday,” Jesse laughs. Now, they see stars of the American country music scene in the flesh. They live down the road from American singersongwriter Kelsea Ballerini and her husband, Australian country music singer Morgan Evans. Jesse sat next to multi-

platinum selling country music artist Dierks Bentley at a sushi restaurant once, while US actor Kate Bosworth stopped her in the street to compliment her “cute dog”. “It’s definitely become more normal seeing stars, but it depends who it is if we get starstruck. If we saw Alanis Morissette we would cry,” she says. Dozzi has been more in-demand since Fools dropped and the sisters are playing two or three times a week in Lower Broadway, an entertainment district renowned for its honky tonks and live country music. When they’re not on stage, they’re “burning the candle at both ends” and supporting other new bands. All three have American partners, but have made it a “band rule” to keep their private lives private. “People say Nashville is a drinking town with a music problem, so there’s always something happening here,” Jesse says. “That’s the great and the terrible thing about Nashville. If we ever get a Sunday to ourselves we try to do nothing but eat spaghetti.” The other thing they say about Nashville is it’s a “10-year town”. In other words, give it a decade of sweat and tears before you can hope for even a small taste of fame. But Dozzi won’t have a bar of that. “We haven’t come here chasing fame, we’re just chasing our best Dozzi,” Jesse says. “Everybody who can help us do that is here – the record labels, the writers that write the number one hits – and we have access to all of these people. “Sure, sometimes I think to myself: ‘Why didn’t we do this 10 years ago?’, but I think that 10 years ago wasn’t our time. Mothers of invention Arts teacher Carlie Daly has come up with a crafty idea to give new mothers time out Hannah Davies

s she sat breastfeeding baby Ziggy, Carlie Daly started imagining. She imagined what it would be like to get a group of mothers together who didn’t spend their time comparing each other’s babies. She imagined women making educational toys and teething aids for their little ones in a soothing environment. She imagined being able to help mums who were in need of extra support in the months after giving birth. And so Mumma Got Skills was born. The big-hearted business, which launched in June 2018, runs craft workshops for mums and bubs across Brisbane where women can engage in simple tasks that take their mind off what’s going on with their baby. “I had always felt my creative side provided relief from overthinking things. It was through doing crafty projects that I realised my mind became quiet and this helped me get through difficult times.” In creating her workshops, the qualified art teacher strives to “get away from traditional mothers’ groups” and teach mums new skills. “I love running craft workshops and connecting with women during the postnatal period and helping them reconnect with who they are as individuals,” she says. “I find a lot of the time women with high-powered careers can be quite thrown

by having a baby, but by making something, the focus is not on the baby and how everything is going. The postnatal support comes through in a very organic way.” Carlie, 33, who also teaches part-time at Ashgrove’s St Finbarr’s Primary School, lives in Annerley but runs the workshops from her parents’ house at Kelvin Grove. Women sign up for a six-week course with their bubs and can choose to make everything from toys and earrings to Christmas baubles.

“In the hectic nature of being a mum, the craft is something you can achieve in a short amount of time and it brings an immense amount of satisfaction. “Your house might be a mess but you can come to the workshops, zone out and feel proud.” Keen to give back to the community, Carlie makes sure a portion of each workshop’s proceeds funds a workshop spot for new mums who need a bit of help to get involved, and from November she is also taking workshops into the Mater Mothers’ Hospital to help expectant mums on bed rest. She has received help in building her business through the Elevate + Social Enterprise Accelerator Program, supported by Brisbane City Council. The council has committed $200,000 over four years to support the development of new and emerging social enterprises like Mumma Got Skills, and Carlie has already started making plans to expand her operation next year. “I’m looking at how I can get out to remote communities to offer services to new mums who may not have access to the same support as city mums,” she says. “Skills workshops are a time where you can refocus attention and simply breathe. I want everyone to be able to feel the benefit.” mummagotskills.com

Tutu divine Meet the dance dads who are braving the spotlight for a special performance with their little girls Andrea Macleod Dancing dads and their tiny princesses might be a worldwide YouTube phenomenon but now, thanks to an Enoggera studio, Brisbane’s dads are showing they too have all the moves. A bunch of devoted dads are in the thick of rehearsals at the Tiny Tutus Preschool Ballet Enoggera studio, inner north-west Brisbane, putting the final touches on their routines for a recital with their daughters. Newly anointed dance dad Michael Bowles is the first to say his three--year-old daughter Audrey is a “little princess”. “Nearly all day every day she’s wearing some … princess, fairy or dancing costume,” he says. Seeing the joy that dance brings his daughter, Michael says he leapt at the chance to join her and other dads in the special daddy-daughter performance. The recital, on Nov 3 at Somerville House, South Brisbane, will feature dads and daughters from Tiny Tutu’s studios at Paddington, Forest Lake, Enoggera/Everton Park, Sunnybank, Upper Mt Gravatt, New Farm and Springwood. Michael says working business hours makes it difficult for him to attend Audrey’s regular

classes so the Dads and Daughters classes offer a rare opportunity. “Audrey and I have been trying as often as we can to practise her recital and she especially loves telling me how to do it,” he says. “The highlight of the show will definitely be dancing with Audrey on stage in front of my wife Christine and two other children (Aston, 7, and April, 7 months).” With a smile he adds: “Dancing is a great way to express yourself – I was just never good at it.” Fellow dance dad Jason Meeds also loves the idea of dancing with his little “princess” and while he hasn’t really done any dancing since primary school, he says he is thrilled to be joining Ashlyn on stage. “It’s a chance for me to create a cherished moment with my daughter,” he says. “But for me, the highlight of the show will be the recital that she does with the other little girls who she’s befriended over the year. hat’s the most expensive bottle of wine you’ve seen on a wine list? And I mean anywhere – Paris, New York, aboard the Orient Express. Say $2000? $5000? More? How about $65,000? That’s where the list tops out at Signature, Emporium Hotel South Bank’s fine dining restaurant. It’s the brightest star in a very glitzy collection labelled The Library – a Burgundy-centric (but certainly not exclusive) list of quite a few hundred wines with runs of Montrachet, Grange, Hill of Grace, Rousseau Chambertin (14 vintages!), Clos des Papes, Masseto ... I could keep going. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever seen a list quite like it. And if it seems out of proportion to spend so many words talking about it, it’s simply because it is the heart and soul of Signature. The restaurant has a wine list aside from The Library – it’s good, decently 12 BRISBANE NEWS October 30-November 5, 2019

priced and interesting. Oddly enough, for all the effort spent on the beautiful, luxurious rooms, the epic wine list, the menu, almost everything about the place, it has a pitiful beer offering: Boag’s, Peroni, Asahi, Corona. What about some world classics? Some local stuff? Anything at all to lift it above the mundane and not have it embarrassed by the detail in the rest of the offering. It is a gorgeous looking restaurant – carpeted, embracing, and oozing finedining, a glass wall to the rear holding all of those special bottles. The staff are in suits (I’m not. I lower the tone of the place a peg or two) and hover at a discreet distance. It’s hard to fault the service. After failing to find a beer I opt for a saké – Tsukinokatsura Honjozo ($20) ... brilliant. It’s not a bad foil for a plate of Sommerlad chicken; truffled parmesan cappelletti, pancetta, asparagus and mushrooms ($34). These are chickens with wonderful flavour, but they need to be cooked perfectly, and this is. There’s not a skerrick of pink in the middle, but it must have fled a moment before the plate hit the table: it’s incredibly succulent. And the flavours work together quite brilliantly in an autumnal kind of way. Brisbane Valley quail ($26) is topped with wattle seed and hazelnut, and I’m still unsure if the wattle seed is a good thing.

A wattle seed is a tiny thing, but as hard as birdshot, and I reckon it distracts from an otherwise very good plate of food. But that’s quibbling. The Signature kitchen is turning out beautiful food – classic rather than cutting edge, but thoughtful, artfully plated, delicious. If the $65,000 bottle of wine makes you fret about the cost of dining here … relax. I walk out after an amusé, entree, main, a glass of saké and petit-fours for a mere $85. And I dined like a king.

Crimson beauty Make like Alastair McLeod and plunder your nearest strawberry patch for these culinary gems One summer, a friend and I were taken to a “pick your own” strawberry farm outside Belfast. We were encouraged to help ourselves which wasn’t to the benefit of the upholstery in my father’s car on the journey home. The next day we went into business and sold the fruit by the roadside. We had cleverly – or so we thought – removed the stalk and calyx to minimise our picking costs. Our customers were less than impressed with our wizened wares. All was not lost; we enjoyed them with ice cream, made jam and my father made demijohns of strawberry wine. My fledging foray into the food business all those years ago was surely a portent.

STRAWBERRY ROSÉ JELLY, FLOWER SHORTBREAD Ingredients 1kg strawberries 90g caster sugar 1tsp vanilla paste 1 bottle rosé 6 leaves gelatine Creme fraiche, to garnish

Method Wash strawberries and pat dry. Thinly slice a third of the strawberries and combine with the sugar and vanilla and leave for half an hour to macerate. Leave

the remaining berries whole or halve the large fruit. Bring the rosé to a simmer and add the macerated fruit. Return to barely a simmer for 30 mins. Soften the gelatine in cold water, drain then add to pot. Ensure it has dissolved then carefully ladle the mixture through some muslin. It’s important not to force any pulp through the muslin to ensure the jelly remains clear. Allow to cool but do not refrigerate. Distribute berries among glasses and fill with two-thirds of the jelly mixture. Set in the fridge before filling with remaining jelly. Chill for a further 4 hours. Serve with creme fraiche and shortbread. Serves 8

SHORTBREAD Ingredients 100g softened unsalted butter 50g caster sugar 110g plain flour 40g rice flour Pinch of salt Edible flowers

refrigerate for 20 mins then roll out between baking paper until 5mm thick. Chill again for 2 hours before stamping out with a 6cm cutter. Arrange flowers on each biscuit. Set another sheet of baking paper on top and roll gently to flatten. Chill again for half an hour before baking at 150C for 15 mins. Leave for 10 mins before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.

Makes 18 biscuits

Process butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Sieve flours and salt over the sugar and butter mixture. Knead mixture gently to form a paste. Shape into a thick puck, wrap in greaseproof paper and

Future vision After more than 20 years in the arts, Veronica Neave is thrilled to help fan the flames of new talent Hannah Davies

t’s not just any artist who is chosen to grace the cover of Brisbane News, and Veronica Neave has graced more than most. Twenty-five years ago she was cover girl for our first edition, a proud moment for any local actor and one she looks back on with fond memories. “I look at that cover with warm nostalgia,” she says. “It captures a moment in my life that can’t be done through theatre. There is no record with theatre because it’s live and in the moment. We do incredible shows and then they disappear, left only in the minds of those who saw them. To have this cover is really lovely.” Back then Veronica was only five years into her acting career and starring as Juliet in Queensland Theatre Company’s first production of Romeo and Juliet. She had no idea of the illustrious career that was to come, but today she is incredibly grateful for everything she has experienced. Having appeared as an actor in more than 50 stage productions across Australia, Veronica has also worked as a dramaturg, writer and director, and won a Matilda Award as well as the inaugural John Harris Critics Award for her contribution to theatre. What’s more, she’s toured the world as an acrobat with the Rock n Roll Circus and featured in a number of TV series and films, including playing the lead in Aussie feature film Girl Clock! (2010) about a 40plus woman who wants to have a baby. In recent years she’s turned her attention to producing and is now at the helm of the much-loved Wonderland Festival at Brisbane Powerhouse from Nov 21-Dec 1. For the festival’s 2019 program, Veronica has booked homegrown favourites and interstate guests with a sprinkling of international sensations including Leather Lungs (Jason Chasland) who titillates with heart-stopping fouroctave vocals; Queensland showgirls Bombshell Burlesque; magic and mentalism master Matt Tarrant; and Christopher Wayne, fresh from the stage at Las Vegas’s MGM Grand Casino, whose new Fully Clothed show sees him perform trickery while recounting his story of magic geek to chic. Veronica says Wonderland is right up her alley because it’s “crazy and every show is out there and risky”. “Now that I’m producing I get to see all these wonderful young theatre makers 14 BRISBANE NEWS October 30-November 5, 2019

coming through in the early incarnation of their artistry and I have a great respect and warmth for them. They have such great optimism and that needs to be fanned because it leads to great work,” she says. “I’ve been very fulfilled in my career. I don’t miss acting because I’m so ingrained in the arts in Queensland, just like I was 25 years ago – I’m just wearing a different hat.” Despite her status as “theatre royalty” Veronica, 51, thinks she would struggle to work as an actor in Brisbane these days. “I think Brisbane is a tricky place for older artists. There really aren’t any opportunities to make a living in Brisbane once you get past a certain age and

I wonder if I would have become a producer if there were more opportunities for older actors here.” Despite this, she doesn’t want to turn the clock back, not least because she is mum to a 16-year-old son. “I’m actually grateful for getting older,” she says. “I don’t look back at myself on the Brisbane News cover and yearn for the youth of it because I think with age and time come the great gifts of wisdom and knowledge and growth. “I’m a much better person today in so many ways.” Wonderland Festival, Brisbane Powerhouse, Nov 21-Dec 1, 2019. wonderlandbrisbane.com.au

hen Brisbane art dealer Jan Murphy first saw artist Monica Rohan’s work in a graduate exhibition it spoke to her. She has an eye for great art of course, that’s her business, but there was more to Monica than just the obvious artistic talent and the beauty of her work. She manages to speak to the human condition in a very special way. And people relate to that, which is why her shows sell out fast. When you go along to her latest at Jan Murphy Gallery you will notice a red sticker on every painting. Monica’s works sell for between $5000 and $11,000 and now is the time for collectors to buy. good news? There’s a waitlist, but it’s not getting any shorter. So what’s the attraction? For a start her paintings are exquisitely executed, colourful and quirky. The first time I saw her work (I covered her first Brisbane exhibition and this is her fourth with Jan Murphy) I was looking at paintings of women surrounded by lush fabric or face down in shrubbery. This time around there is the same attention to fashion and florid landscapes with figures teetering on chairs. Walking through the show with the artist we decide that “precariousness” is a good word to describe how she feels about being on the planet. That is expressed by the figures in her paintings balancing,

almost like acrobats, on extrapolated chairs while regarding trees in full bloom. A visit to the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden furnished some of the floral backdrops. The titles are succinct but telling – Wobble, Stand up straight, Topple, Adrift, Tremble. And so it goes. You are getting the picture? “Floating transcendence and anchored realism share equal magnitude in Monica Rohan’s painting”, according to the publicity blurb which postulates that the chairs featured “act as an extension to human figures, linking them tenuously to their environment”. Jan Murphy points out that as beautiful and quirky as the works are they are also

brutally honest about the fears we share as humans and that makes people relate to these paintings in a special way. Monica, who paints at home in Brisbane’s inner north, is chuffed with her success but does not seem to be getting carried away with it. She was a featured artist at the Sydney Contemporary 2019 art fair and the 12 Monica Rohan works for sale there went within the first 40 minutes. Which indicates that if you are looking to collect an artist whose star is rising fast you need to see this exhibition. Now. READY OR NOT (MA15+) hhkjj Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett Starring Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O’Brien The popular children’s game of hide-andseek is given a macabre twist in this opulent slasher comedy, which fits somewhere between Cluedo and The Addams Family. Newlywed Grace Le Domas (Samara Weaving) is “It”. On the night of her marriage to the Le Domas family’s estranged youngest son, Alex (Mark O’Brien), the sweet-but-stillsassy foster child learns that she must take part in an eccentric nuptial ritual. To celebrate their roots as a thirdgeneration gaming dynasty, the filthy rich Le Domases gather at midnight to play a game selected from a mysterious box. It might have been chess, cards or checkers … but Grace draws the dreaded wildcard. And what the unsuspecting bride – who is still wearing her lacy white wedding dress – imagines to be a bit of harmless fun, turns out to be deadly serious. In the Le Domas’s version of the classic game, Grace will be the only person hiding in the Gothic mansion, appropriately outfitted with dumbwaiters, false doors and secret corridors. Once a member of the Le Domas clan, who have armed themselves with crossbows, muskets and guillotine axes, finds her, she is to be swiftly sacrificed in honour of an ancient pact made by the family’s tiger-hunting patriarch. This terrifying state of affairs is prefigured in the film’s opening sequence, which features Alex and his older brother Daniel (Adam Brody) as mere boys, along with an antique wardrobe and a groom with a couple of arrows sticking out of his chest.

HIDE AND SHRIEK ... Samara Weaving announces herself as a Hollywood “scream queen” in Ready or Not. But when she is presented with this life-or-death scenario, Grace discovers hitherto-unsuspected resources. And the hapless “victim” proves to be a more than worthy match for these in-laws from hell, which includes a loose-cannon, cocaine-addicted little sister (Melanie Scrofano), her prattish husband (Kristian Bruun), and Daniel’s ruthless, fortunehunter wife (Elyse Levesque). Henry Czerny underplays the Le Domas dad as ineffectually entitled and Andie

MacDowell’s wooden delivery works quite well for her in the role of a steely, Morticialike matriarch. As is the case with what feels like the majority of contemporary horror movies, the central, female protagonist is pretty much on her own. Because of his part in the earlier, historic sacrifice, Daniel is the only family member to display anything vaguely resembling a conscience – the smitten Alex is out of commission, since he has been handcuffed to a bed. Weaving gives her breakout

that are one size too small, and acquiescing, against her better instincts, to demeaning sexual encounters, Brittany scrapes through with a precarious line in humour that trades on self-deprecation more than wit … Until an opportunistic visit to a new doctor brings her up short.

Brittany has made an appointment with the GP in the hope of scoring some prescription drugs (the ADHD drug Adderall) for recreational purposes. Instead, she is diagnosed as officially obese with a lifestyle that has her on the fast track towards diabetes or liver disease.

“scream queen” role everything she’s got in a performance that is, by turns, resourceful, hysterical, avenging and incandescent. But the Aussie actress faces an uphill slog, hampered by a creaky plot, cookiecutter supporting characters and plodding direction. Ready or Not is very nearly saved by a deliciously absurd ending that resolves a ridiculous situation. Combined with Weaving’s star turn, it’s almost enough to get this satirical Gothic horror across the line.

It’s at this point that she comes face-toface with her own fear and self-loathing, setting out on a slow, fitful journey towards something better – one block at a time. Unable to afford the gym fees, Brittany starts pounding the pavement. To give her – and the audience – something to bounce off, Brittany Runs a Marathon introduces a couple of running mates. Seth (Micah Seth), a gay man who doesn’t want to be humiliated in his son’s first potato sack race, is Brittany’s sluggish soulmate. Her wealthy, athletic upstairs neighbour, Catherine (Michaela Watkins), is more of an arch nemesis or frenemy. Utkarsh Ambudkar provides some wonderfully relaxed romantic interest. Brittany Runs a Marathon is inspired by the true story of first-time writer-director Paul Downs Colaizzo’s flatmate, Brittany O’Neill, whose photo appears in the end credits. There are times when the plot feels about as predictable as the route of the New York Marathon itself, and some of the dialogue veers dangerously close to selfhelp territory, but Bell’s winningly wayward performance stays the distance. eyond the monumental threestorey facade, long views unfurl across a dense, green gully. The verdant outlook was only part of what owners Andrew and Wendy loved about this pocket of Taringa. The bigger drawcard was the striking architecture of the house designed in the 1990s by architect John Hockings. “We just loved the house when we first walked inside,” Andrew says. “The colours were outdated but the form had really stood the test of time.” Originally designed for a sole occupant, the house was well-loved but less suited to a family of four. Andrew and Wendy decided to live there for a year to get a better sense of their family needs before engaging local architect Shane Marsh to design new alterations and additions. “We really didn’t need to reinvent what was already there,” Shane says. “But a few of the spaces were a bit tight and not functioning as well as they could.” The biggest limitations in the planning of the original house were the compact dimensions of the kitchen and living room and the absence of a master suite. To overcome these shortfalls the middle and lower floors were extended towards the east. This supported more generous social spaces at the centre level and at ground level, a large bedroom and ensuite for Andrew and Wendy. V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

“We made a larger family living space and placed the kitchen at the centre of it,” Shane says. “By extending out to the east we increased the northern exposure of the house, over two floors.” While the dining room occupies the same corner of the plan, the living room reaches out towards the tree canopy and the new kitchen establishes the centre of family life. There’s been a dramatic shift in the family dynamic as a result, with meal preparation becoming a more social activity. Larger gatherings are encouraged and multiple cooks can work together. Between dining, kitchen and living rooms, movement is fluid and family connections are strengthened by a sense of independence and togetherness. Special care has been taken to ensure new rooms are visually cohesive. “We wanted to use the same Tasmanian oak on the floor,” Andrew says. “We sourced enough lengths but had to shave each piece to match the width of the old boards. It was worthwhile because it looks totally seamless.” Details and dimensions were also borrowed from the original architecture so as not to disrupt the original design intent. The timber framed windows and doors, for example, adopt the same vertical rhythm as the old. As do twin timber posts

marching down the length of the northern edge. As a result the facade and structural system employed in the contemporary addition serve to unify the whole building envelope. Another internal staircase gives more privacy to the new master bedroom at ground level. “Our biggest struggle was connecting to the ground level,” Shane says. “It was a big mental jump, deciding to put the master bedroom downstairs but here it made a lot of sense because we could preserve more of the original architecture.” The move establishes separation between children’s and adults’ spaces and gives a sense of luxury in the contemporary finish to the new robe, bathroom and bedroom. “It’s a bit like living in a resort,” Andrew says. “You wake up to the sunshine and the sound of the pool. Phil Brown I laughed out loud in the office the other day when I opened a letter. It was from Ian McFadyen, the writer and comedian of The Comedy Company How often do you laugh out loud? Not often I’ll bet. But we need to, it’s good for you, according to Reader’s Digest. That magazine’s Laughter, The Best Medicine is famous. There was also a bloke called Norman Cousins, an American political journalist, author and professor who famously cured himself of serious illness in the 1960s by taking vitamin C and laughing his head off while watching endless comedy shows. Cousins was portrayed by actor Ed Asner in a 1984 television movie, Anatomy of an Illness, based on Cousins’s 1979 book, Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient: Reflections on Healing. You know how good it is to laugh. It makes you feel good, right?

In India they have those yogic laughter clubs and I believe they have started some in Australia too. You know, you all get together in a park somewhere and do a bit of yoga and laugh yourselves silly while everyone looks at you like you are mad. Because you are. I don’t laugh out loud that much but occasionally something really gets me. Often this occurs when I am watching Seinfeld. The other thing that will always make me laugh is the 1994 comedy classic Dumb and Dumber starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. I watch it a couple of times a year and laugh like a drain. My favourite scene? Well that’s hard because there are so many but the one

where the traffic cop takes a swig of a bottle of beer he thinks they have been drinking and finds it to be full of wee wee. They couldn’t stop to pee so they went in the bottle. Hilarious. You can see how sophisticated my taste in comedy is. I laughed out loud in the office the other day when I opened a letter. character named Grafton Everest and Ian teamed up with him on one of these novels in 2015. It was called Going Out Backwards. Now they have collaborated again on a new book, which is out this week. It’s called The Dizzying Heights and is published by Hybrid Publishers. Ian dropped in a copy to me the other day with a note that read: “Dear Phil, It is with much regret that I inform you that Ross and I have churned out another book in the dreaded Grafton Everest series. Rather uncharitably, he is anxious that you be among the first to suffer reading it. Accordingly, please find a copy, lukewarm off the press.” I laughed and laughed at that and yes, that felt good. Maybe I should read the book?
