Lord Mayor’s Message Brisbane loves a festival, and no other place in the city knows how to party like Brisbane Powerhouse. For a chuckle head to Brisbane Comedy Festival and enjoy the Brisbane Comedy Festival Gala at City Hall, where you’ll see a variety of talent including household names Tripod, Matt Okine, Mel Buttle, Steve Hughes and more. If you’re after inspiration then you’ll love WTF16: A Festival of Contemporary Performance, which sees a cavalcade of international artists hit the stage to bring shows from around the globe to your doorstep. This festival is flanked by the Australian Performing Arts

Market (APAM), which provides Australian and New Zealand artists with opportunities to display their works-in-progress to producers and venues from around the world. This February our new world city will see even more festivals with MELT: A Celebration of Queer Arts and Culture and the 17th annual Brisbane Queer Film Festival. Both explore LGBTI stories from Australia and around the world.

Whether you want to laugh, celebrate or be inspired, I encourage you to join us for this wonderful season. With the diverse program on offer there is something for everyone at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Sometimes you just need a bit of advice from Terry Pratchett. We think the king of bizarre would have approved of our upcoming eye-opening program. We have giant moths trying to colonise earth; Titanic sinking in the plaza; Richard Dawkins appearing for one night only and more than 100+ shows that will break the rules and open your eyes twice.

The only rule at Brisbane Powerhouse is that we’re here to break the rules (in a non criminal way).

CAT POWER "An artist at the peak of her powers…" THE GUARDIAN

Savour the sultry sounds of Georgia-born singer Cat Power as she returns to Australia this summer for a series of intimate theatre-only performances. From indie-queen to modern day Southern soul heroine, Cat Power’s unconventional career path has spanned punk, folk, blues and soul. Her latest effort, 2012’s self-produced Sun, reached the top ten of the US charts. More recently Power has leant her voice to a cover of The Turtles lost classic ‘You Showed Me’ and provided the voice-over to Janis, a documentary about troubled female rock pioneer Janis Joplin. Don’t miss this opportunity to see Power up-close-and-personal as she performs a swag of new material and old favourites.

Start the week with a guffaw at Brisbane City Hall in this new comedy showdown.

Better than sliced bread or fairy bread, it’s Brisbane Born and Bread!

For one night only you’ll see Nazeem Hussain (SBS Fear of a Brown Planet), Aunty Donna (ABC iView), Harley Breen, Gen Fricker, Sam Campbell, Damien Power, Cam Knight and more take Brisbane City Hall by storm. Punchlines will fly, quips will reign and you’ll roar with laughter as these comedy black belts unleash the lols.

Brisbane Powerhouse loves to give artists a SWEET! deal. SWEET! is a key part of Brisbane Powerhouse’s commitment to creating new work and ensuring that the Australian independent performance industry continues to thrive. Each year Brisbane Powerhouse offers three creative teams $10,000 and the opportunity to take their show from page to the stage with a two-week season in the Visy Theatre and assistance from the Brisbane Powerhouse production and marketing teams.

In 2016 three new SWEET! shows will hit the stage: Caroline Dunphy and Katherine LyallWatson’s Hanako, Lisa F’alafi and Leah Shelton’s The Long-Toothed Devil and Tristan Meecham’s Versions of Truth. Previous SWEET! selections include Margi Brown Ash’s He Dreamed a Train (2014), Claire Marshall’s Flaunt (2014) and Brian Lucas and David Fenton’s Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis (2015).

Enter a surreal world where the real and imaginary, and the animal and human, collide. Interdisciplinary artist Zoe Porter has combined forces with Ben Ely (Regurgitator) and Olivia Porter (Circus Oz) to create a collaborative performance work and a large-scale video projection. The artists explore mythology and ritual through

drawing, sculpture, installation and performance. These works present a personal mythology, which features imaginary forms and environments that sit between the animal, human, plant and non-human realms as well as drawing on the everyday and the subconscious. POWERKIDS Little Artists at Play WITH IMAGINARY THEATRE With a new host-artist every three months, this free weekly kids’ event is the perfect place for you and your family to relax, play and learn. Little Artists at Play is a creative play workshop series for children aged 0–5 years. Each week a host-artist from Imaginary Theatre will collaborate with the group on unique and engaging activities. From theatre and visual art to dance, music and digital media, there will be something to inspire everyone.

From January to March 2016 we’ll be joined by performance maker Verena Curr with Storyscapes, a storytelling adventure, rich with sounds, actions, visuals and other tactile experiences. LOCATION We live in a beautiful area of Brisbane. You can find us on the Brisbane River next to New Farm Park; there are flowering jacarandas in spring and roses for most of the year. Street access is via the end of Lamington Street (continuation of James Street). CITYCAT: After a lazy jaunt down the river you’ll have a well-lit 200 metre riverside walk from the New Farm Park CityCat Jetty. BUS: The 195 and 196 stop at New Farm Park. Take a short, enjoyable stroll along the riverside path from the CityCat jetty. If you want to give your legs a bit more of a workout you can catch the 199 bus, which stops on Merthyr Road within walking distance via Lamington Street. BICYCLES: It’s cool to be green! Bike racks are located outside the Stores Building (beside the car park) and Brisbane Powerhouse. A CityCycle station is also located at the entrance to the car park on Lamington Street.

TAXI: If you need a taxi it’s as easy as using the free taxi phones located in the foyer opposite the box office. Our collect and drop off area is in the car park beside the Stores Building. CAR: We have 140 free car parks on site via Lamington Street. After 4pm a link road opens to New Farm Park where there are more parking spots available. The parking fills up very quickly during busy shows so if you do plan on driving we recommend that you arrive early and have dinner at one of our two restaurants before the show. WHEELCHAIR: Wheelchair parking is available on-site via Lamington Street with lift access from the car park level beside the Stores Building. Please notify the box office of any special needs when booking.
