New Urban Models for Aging, AIA Design Competition Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The project attempts to create a geriatric neighborhood within an urban setting. It would accommodate 3 occupant types – Ward 1 (Independent Seniors), Ward 2 (Assisted Living), and Ward 3 (Skilled Nursing). Fundamentally, the project is a retort to the common “nursing home”. Rather than alienating it’s occupants, it creates urban conditions/programs that further integrates the geriatric with other age demographics. At the center of the project site, we created a void that would operate as an “urban living room”. It would work as a public space that interconnects all wards and encourages communal gathering and interaction.

Exhibition Design for LA Based firm, Johnston Marklee Syracuse, New York APERTURE 1. an opening or open space: a hole. 2. synonyms: breach, break, chasm, chink, cleft, crack, cut, eye, fissure, gap, gash, interstice, opening, orifice, outlet, passage, perforation, pinhole, puncture, rift, rupture, slash, slit, slot, space, vent. JohnstonMarkLee’s Hong Kong Design Institute is a pivotal project that explores the versatility of apertures. The use of apertures in architecture is an undeniable component, but this Los Angeles firm is exploring the extensive range of possibilities for movement between spaces, diversity in program, light manipulation and establishing views. The Hong Kong Design Institute is composed of modular units that are stacked, shifted and rotated creating a new topology, resulting in an uninterrupted pattern of apertures. The variety in architectural spaces allows for the diversity of program to coexist, as well as creating physical and visual connections between the spaces. The horizontality of the apertures sits in sharp contrast to the verticality of Hong Kong skyline, thus creating an aberrant landmark. This exhibition, curated by a team of students, is unique in that it connects the design process of JohnstonMarkLee’s work through the students’ interpretation to the exhibition’s final design. JohnstonMarklee’s previous projects such as Sale House (2006), Hill House (2006), Mameg (2007), Helios House (2007), and View House (2008) work together as a network of ideas with a focus on the functionality of apertures. This exhibition design also uses a network of relationships to make connections between images based on a hierarchy of influences. JohnstonMarkLee’s iterative work is dealing with the potentials of apertures, which has resulted in a new complexity associated with a standardized module. The Hong Kong Design Institute is just one example of the complexities that are possible with this interesting design strategy. Currently, JohnstonMarkLee is continuing this investigation with a new housing strategy in China. Team project with Chris Norris, William Villalobos, Bruce Davison, Wendy Wade, and Seth King. 12

An Urban Intervention for the Near West SIde Syracuse, New York An urban intervention for the Syracuse’s Near West Side, which statistically is one of the lowest economic and academic regions in the country. The project proposes a “Sports University” that would introduce new programs to stimulate economic growth and provide extracurricular activities for the local schools.

A Medical Clinic Accra, Ghana The project proposes sustainable building solutions for a medical clinic in Ghana. Due to the site’s location, it utilizes passive cooling strategies, compact design, and recyclable materials to minimize potential costs and energy use while maximizing building performance. Mechanical Ducts and Electrical Wiring run between the floors and drop ceilings. The Mechanical system works with passive design strategies to create a hybridized system. The building consists of lighting fixtures that are typical florescent bulbs with some moments of controlled natural daylight in some medical spaces.

Neo Eden A Topia in Outer Space Neo Eden is an exploration into extraterrestrial space. It hypothesizes the human experience by narrating a series of events from departure to post-occupancy. Frozen H2O

The Neo Eden has a primary water storage basin that will distribute water throughout the colony. All waste and sewage water is gathered and goes through an indirect Potable Water Recycling Process, so that it can be redistributed back into the water supply. To support a growing population, Neo Eden will harvest frozen water that is located along the surface of nearby asteroids (theorized by NASA)

Bottom Right Image Back in 2008, The International Space Station was able to double it’s crew numbers with the implementation of a Water Recovery System which allows them to convert urine into a water source.
