Mortimer Charles Read was
born on 22 November 1887, son of Alfred Charles Read, (b 1857), accountant and Eliza Matilda Read, (b 1856).
By 1901 the census shows Mortimer living with his parents and four sisters at 23 St Michaels Park, Bristol. His sisters were Winifred Josephine, a Milliner (b 1879), Frances E, a Draper’s Assistant (b 1883), Eliza Louise (b 1891) and Nora Kathleen M (b 1898). Parents and children were all born in Bristol.
He joined the Shell form of the school in January 1903 and left a few months later in July 1903, aged 15. The family were living at 23 St Michaels Park, Bristol. The 1911 census records Mortimer as a Marine Engineer. In the same year he married Annie Bessie Croft.
He served as Third Engineer on the S.S. ‘Bristol City’ (Mercantile Marine) which served as a supply vessel to the Royal Navy. He died at sea as a result of a submarine attack on 16 December 1917, aged 30.
He is remembered with Honour at the Tower Hill Memorial, London. He left behind his wife Annie Bessie Read of 40, Islington Road, Southville, Bristol.
