PRIDE 2017
WELCOME Welcome to Bristol Pride 2017! After months of planning we’re all excited that Pride is finally here and we can share all the events planned to make this year’s festival our biggest and boldest event yet. We continue to use the arts to showcase our culture and celebrate our diverse community, to help champion LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans) equality and to triumph over stigma, prejudice and shame. We’ve continued to work hard to make a Pride event that Bristol can be proud of, improving our programming and artistic content to bring amazing acts to Bristol for us all to enjoy. Despite still not getting core funding to put Pride on, we do all this and still keep Bristol Pride a donation entry festival, so it’s open for all to attend not just those who can afford it. For over 10 hours of entertainment on Pride Day we’ll be asking everyone for a £3 donation, but if you can, please get a £5 supporter wristband for festival discounts inc. money off at the bars and free bus travel. Our £15 fabric wristbands offer entry to 3 afterparties including the official afterparty at the O2 headlined by Charlotte Church’s Late Night Pop Dungeon – all while helping to make Pride happen. Locally we’ve continued to work all year round to champion equality with events and visits to schools and businesses. Globally it’s been a turbulent year for our community, we’ve seen hard fought rights reversed, increased hatred and June marks the 1 year anniversary of the mass shooting in Orlando. As I write, we are witnessing the horrors that are unfolding in Chechnya. It’s a stark reminder that we can’t be complacent or stop fighting and we must fight for those whose voices, and lives, are being taken away. The LGBT Russian Network is our chosen charity to support this year and please take time to visit our community area and speak to Bristol Refugee Rights, Amnesty and Micro-Rainbow to find out how you can help our global family. Have a fantastic Pride everyone, celebrate and raise your voice. Daryn J Carter Bristol Pride welcome

FILM: CENTRE OF MY WORLD
A BEAUTIFUL STORY OF FIRST LOVE FAR FROM MIDDLE OF THE ROAD This stunning adaptation of Andreas Steinhoefel’s novel really stands out as something special. Twins Phil and Dianne had an unconventional childhood, living in an overgrown fairytale-esque mansion, in a small German hamlet and raised by their eccentric and fascinating mother, Glass.

Returning from summer camp high-schooler Phil finds tensions at home and distraction at school with his first foray into love with new transfer and heartthrob Nicholas, who ends up seducing Phil in a steamy school shower scene. Along with his wild friend Kat the three embark on a joyful summer that captures young life’s perfect moments but things are not all as they seem. We see things unfold for an infatuated Phil, with multiple players, as he tries to work out the centre of his world. With incredible cinematography and a multi-dimensional story that even has elements of Sci-Fi, there’s realistic depth to the characters portrayed by some of the brightest talent. The story doesn’t just focus on a gay relationship either and we soon see how love can make a mess of everything. Joyful, funny and at times sad this is for everyone who has ever looked for love, found it, or can’t figure out exactly what to do with it. Young people 24 & under, refugees and asylum seekers can see any film at Watershed at any time for £4.50. Tickets available via the Watershed Box Office. Tel: 0117 927 5100 or www.watershed.co.uk

KEEPING IT GREEN
WE MAY BE PINK BUT WE’RE ALSO VERY GREEN Every year we work to reduce our carbon footprint in a number of ways. From sourcing our infrastructure locally so we don’t have lorries bringing kit from all over the country to ensuring our food traders are local and source their ingredients locally too. We’ve also asked them to ensure that if they do need to give you packaging that it is compostable and have banned plastic cutlery. We work extremely hard to reduce our plastic waste and have saved on average 70kg of waste plastic over the last two years. That’s over 1 tonne of carbon; the equivalent of travelling from Bristol UK all the way over to Bristol, Maine, USA. Our wristbands are ‘litter free’ so we don’t have lots of little bits of plastic left over and even this programme has been printed on recycled paper using vegetable dye and been has delivered to venues by bike. BUT we need your help to reduce our impact and there’s several ways you can help.
PLEASE DON’T LITTER we have over 100 bins onsite with recycling facilities - use them!
It is so disheartening to see the amount of waste needlessly left on the floor after the festival. Not only does it shame us all, but Pride then have to pay extra money for clean-up and also have to find extra volunteers to help us litter pick. Forget the car and get discounted travel with Bristol Ferrys and free bus travel on Pride Day with First Bus with a supporter wristband. We also kept Pride central so you can walk. Refill Bristol are again onsite offering free water so bring reusable bottles to fill up, or you can buy one from them on the day. This helps us save hundreds of waste plastic bottles. Use our reusable cup scheme, you pay a £1 deposit for your reusable cup, bring it back with you to the bar each time you get a drink and you get a new one. You can keep your cup as a souvenir or return it when done and get your £1 back, which you could always donate to Pride. Glitter. We love it and we know you do too, but did you know glitter is a micro plastic that doesn’t degrade in our oceans? Lush have lots of natural based products to make you shine, or do your homework and get one of the new (properly) biodegradable options on the market or opt for mineral based shimmers.

A WORD WITH... What does Unite Students do? Unite Students provides homes for almost 50000 students across the UK. Our students comprise of young people who are from nearly 100 different countries. We believe providing a home for the students that live with us isn’t just about buildings, it’s about safe, secure and inclusive homes where you can study and socialise in comfort. What do you do at Unite Students? As Sustainability Engagement Manager at Unite Students I promote sustainable behaviour change through running a whole series of campaigns and competitions with our students and employees around energy saving, recycling and food waste. I love it! What do you do in Bristol? In Bristol, we provide homes for around 3500 students ranging from first years to post graduates. We also have our Head Office here, so we have around 250 employees working to support our operational teams who run the properties that our students live in. What can be the challenges for students first arriving at university? Moving away from home and going to university is a really exciting time for new students, but it can be quite daunting. It is very often the first time that they have been away from home and are often moving to a new city or country, and moving in with people they might not know, from a wide range of different backgrounds. Making friends and finding people that our students can be themselves with is really important to helping them to settle into, and enjoy university life. We’re excited to have Unite Students as our Headline Sponsor, what made you get involved with Pride? Unite Students is committed to providing an inclusive home for its students and work place for its employees. The organisation was launched in Bristol over 25 years ago,
Lauren Sustainability Engagement Manager, Unite Students converting disused city centre office blocks into much needed, student accommodation. We are proud of our history in Bristol, and the diverse and vibrant community it provides for students and the great people that work with us, to live in. We believe the Pride event celebrates the very best of this, and showcases this diverse and inclusive community. We felt it was really important for us to show our support for such a great event which enables the community to come together and celebrate its diversity and inclusivity which help make the city the much-loved place that it is. Why is Diversity important to you? Ultimately our differences make us stronger and diversity brings together new ideas, views, and practices to inspire us and help us to make the best possible decisions. It has never been more important to come together in this way. You’ll be on Millennium Square on Pride Day what can people look out for? We are really excited to be down in Millennium Square on Pride Day! We’ll be there offering a chance for members of the local community to find out about a bit more about Unite Students, whether you might be interested in working with us, or living with us in the future.

FILM: MILES
INSPIRING, HEART-WARMING AND VIVIDLY DETAILED We chose to catch this film at BFI FLARE assuming it tackled issues of gender equality and sports, instead we found an incredibly funny and moving film based on a true story that we really wanted to share.

Out and proud student Miles (Tim Boardman) is desperate to graduate and escape rural town America by moving to the city to enrol in film school. His dreams are shattered when the sudden death of his father leaves the family bankrupt, having squandered his son’s college fund on a mistress. Desperate for a way out, Miles finds a volleyball scholarship program that exists between his high school and a well-regarded Chicago University. There’s just one catch, the only volleyball team that exists at his school is a girls’ team. Though filmed on a small budget it boasts a powerful cast including Molly Shannon (Never Been Kissed), Missi Pyle (Gone Girl) and Ethan Phillips (Star Trek) and is filled with nineties nostalgia, sci-fi nods and comedy moments. Miles is a breath of fresh air and the fact that, at 17, our lead is comfortable in his skin and sees no reason to hide his sexuality is refreshing to see. Young people 24 & under, refugees and asylum seekers can see any film at Watershed at any time for £4.50. Tickets available via the Watershed Box Office. Tel: 0117 927 5100 or www.watershed.co.uk
