JAZZ MEETS BRISTOL SYMPHONY
Welcome to the second in our series of Jazz Meets Bristol Symphony concerts. Tonight we are locking horns with the very fine, Bristol-based international jazz quartet, Get The Blessing. This is a fantastic collaboration - a meeting of musical minds. We have been working closely together choosing pieces by the quartet, transcribing them into notation and cascading the sound into symphony orchestra. Variety of tempo and feel were at the forefront of our minds, and scale too, from full symphonic forces to intimate chamber group. The classical pieces, with their Spanish and Argentinian origins, play into this new material, with all sorts of cross-currents and influences being shared throughout the whole programme. Passion, colour, rhythm, intensity - it’s all to be found in tonight’s performance.

GET THE BLESSING | QUARTET Bassist Jim Barr once remarked that Get The Blessing were “total outsiders” and “the punk entry” when they won the 2008 BBC Jazz Award for Best Album with ‘All Is Yes’. Almost ten years later and five albums down the line, the same could still be said to hold true, albeit with a little more subtlety and wisdom at their disposal.
SOLOIST BIO
Native to Bristol and formed, as long ago as 1999, to share a fascination with the freedom and melodic invention of Ornette Coleman, the line-up has remained the same, with Portishead rhythm masters Jim Barr and Clive Deamer on bass and drums respectively, Pete Judge on trumpet and Jake McMurchie on saxophone; and all this, despite other commitments for everyone, not least Deamer’s recruitment as Radiohead’s second live drummer in 2012. The band’s old friend and collaborator (and Portishead guitarist), Adrian Utley, has also made the occasional guest appearance, and the band has collaborated with artists as diverse as Robert Wyatt, Viv Albertine, and John Hegley.
Still Bristol-based, the four-piece now boasts a truly international fan base. Since the release of ‘All Is Yes’ in February 2008, they’ve taken their musical vision around the world with successful tours and festival appearances in the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Dubai, Turkey, Macedonia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia... Following the success of 2015’s album ‘Astronautilus’, the jazz-rock mavericks will be releasing a sixth studio album ‘BRISTOPIA’ in the autumn. The album shares a common root with the music from the film ‘BRISTOPOLIS’, a poetic cinematic montage of Bristol from the past 100 years, most of which was held by the Bristol Archive and which was brought together by long-term GTB collaborator, John Minton. The film was commissioned by and performed at this year’s Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival, and some of the music from the film will be featured in the concert programme. Get The Blessing has forged a unique signature sound that defies easy classification: full of spacious atmospheres and strongly-crafted melodies, yet never losing sight of thumping tunes, monstrously infectious beats, or joyous collective spontaneity – plus, of course, the unpredictability and musical mischievousness that have made the band so exciting and successful.

WILLIAM GOODCHILD | CONDUCTOR COMPOSER | ARRANGER | CONDUCTOR

William is a professional composer and conductor. He composes music for film, television, concert performance and commercial installation. He has scored well over 80 films for the major broadcasters, including many that have won international awards. Since 2016, he has had three nominations for Best Composer at the RTS West of England Awards and, also in 2016, was nominated for the Music Award at Wildscreen Festival for Jago - a Life Underwater. In 2017 he won Best Score at the Hollywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival for Living Spirit Pictures’ Seeing Him. On stage and in the recording studio, William has collaborated with a wide variety of international soloists including guitarist John Williams, singer Tom Jones, and saxophonist Andy Sheppard. He is delighted to be collaborating with Get The Blessing for this evening’s performance. William’s passion for working across styles led to a live and recorded collaboration with Mercury Prize-Winner, Roni Size & Reprazent, and their album, Live at Colston Hall, was released in November 2015. Also at the Colston Hall, with Sir David Attenborough presenting, William orchestrated and conducted the BBC’s Nature’s Great Events Live to a sell-out audience. The BBC’s Wild
China series, orchestrated and conducted by William, won an Emmy. Many recordings conducted by William are available to buy on Sony Classical, Universal Classical and Jazz, and CBS Records. He has worked regularly with a number of professional orchestras including the BBC Concert Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Bristol Ensemble. William is Artistic Director and Conductor of Bristol Symphony Orchestra. He lives in north Bristol with his wife Rachel and their two daughters, Rosa and Eleanor.

PAMELA BELL | PRINCIPAL LEADER Pamela Bell is the Principal Leader and co-founder (2016) of Bristol Symphony Orchestra. Prior to playing with the orchestra, she was the leader of Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra (2010-2015). As well as leading the youth orchestras she played with, she has performed with Bristol Classical Players, Bristol Opera and The London Lawyers’ Symphony Orchestra. Before re-locating to Bristol from London in 2005, she was the musical director for Newham Schools Orchestra and is the founder of Kuumba Youth Music (now Kuumba Youth Orchestra). Pamela is a commercial lawyer working in-house. She is passionate about music... “Music is my sanctuary and, having the opportunity to create and share my passion for it, is truly a privilege and a treasure.”
