Unaccompanied Minors What is an unaccompanied minor?

Naming a responsible adult

In airline policy, an unaccompanied minor is a passenger under 16 years of age (airline regulations vary) who is travelling without an accompanying adult. Parents or guardians, requesting this service, must complete a BSC YL -Letter of Consent UM Form which gives authorization for a BSC YL Team Member to pick up the unaccompanied minor at the destination airport. Airline personnel are responsible for escorting the student through immigration and customs and boarding the flight in time. A fee is often charged by the airline for this service.

Arrivals Students that book the unaccompanied minor arrival transfer service will be handed over by the airline to the greeting BSC YL team member (holding a sign with the student’s name) who is authorised to collect the student and who will then accompany the student to the Young Learners Centre.

When parents or guardians are asked to provide a name for the responsible adult collecting a student upon their arrival in the UK or Malta they should provide the airline with the name and contact details of the Young Learners Operations Manager – Dorian Maillet (Tel: +356 9964 2476). This information can be found at the bottom of the BSC YL - Letter of Consent UM Form. The Young Learners Manager in collaboration with the greeting BSC YL team member will then be able to provide the BSC YL Central Authorization of Collection for Unaccompanied Minors Form in arrivals to collect the student

Departures Students that book the unaccompanied minor departure service will be accompanied to the airport by a BSC YL team member who will assist with the check in process and supervise the student until they are handed over to the airline delegate who will then ensure the student boards the flight in time. Our BSC YL team member will stay at the airport until the student’s flight has departed in case of any delays or problems.

How much does it cost? For students travelling as an unaccompanied minor (UM) with airlines, there will be a charge of £120 or 120€ return. It will cost £60 or 60€ for a single journey.
