WELCOME TO MANCHESTER This manual gives you key details about your stay, including what happens when you arrive, what you will learn on the course, more information about the coaches and staff, as well as the residence and your welfare. We hope you have a wonderful stay!

WHEN YOU ARRIVE Players travelling alone When you arrive in the UK you will be met by a British Study Centres Young Learners representative, who will be wearing a uniform. They will be holding a sign with your name. When you see us, tell us your name. We will then take you to your transfer (a coach or taxi) and travel with you to the residence. We encourage you to telephone your family when you arrive at the residence so they know you have arrived safely. British Study Centres Young Learners reserves the right to charge a supplement for any player or group arriving outside the hours of 09:00 and 16:00 on arrival day, and departing outside the hours of 09:00 and 11:00 on departure day, with the exception of Friday departures. If you are departing on Friday, we recommend that you book your flight from Manchester from 19.30 onwards. On weekends, the supplement for out-of-hours transfers would be £25 one way, £100 return. Players travelling with parents If your parents are dropping you off on your first day, they will need to bring you straight to the residence on arrival day, anytime in the afternoon before 16:00. Dinner will begin at 17:30. Residence address: Peel Park Quarter, University Road, Salford, Manchester, M5 4NJ
If your parents are also picking you up on the Friday, please ask them to pick you up from the closing ceremony from 16:30. All Players Whether you are travelling alone or with parents, we will welcome you on arrival and help you settle in, showing you your room and the facilities. We will explain what happens for the rest of the day, and also your schedule for the week.

GETTING AROUND Transport Accompanied by BSC YL staff, you will be picked up every morning from the residence by private coach, which will take you to the City Football Academy, Manchester City’s training facility. At the end of each day, the coach will take you back to the residence. Transport on excursions You will travel by coach to the excursions in your programme. Staff will be with you at all times, please listen to their instructions.

OUR STAFF Our team are happy to help you. Here are the different members of staff that you will meet: The Centre Manager looks after the centre. They organise the staff, the activities, the cleaning and the catering. They spend a lot of time talking to the staff at the college and looking after the Group Leaders and other visitors. The Director of Studies looks after the academic programme. They also organise students into classes and help you if there is a problem with your class. The Activity Coordinator is in charge of the activity programme. It is their responsibility to make sure you have fun and get the most out of your social activities. The Welfare Manager looks after the wellbeing and safeguarding of all players, and is available if you need to speak to somebody about a problem. The Residence and Accommodation Manager looks after the accommodation. They organise your check-in and departure and make sure you have everything you need in your room and your flat. Teachers lead your English sessions Activity Leaders will run the evening activities. They will make sure you have a good time; you can always talk to them if you have a problem. Some of our staff are residential, and will live with you at the residence.

DAY ONE Induction Meeting Before arriving, you will have taken an online pre-test. This will give us an accurate indication of your level of English so we can place you in the best class. You will also receive an induction, where you will be told key information, including programme rules, what to do in an emergency, and general information about the programme and life in the UK. During this session, you will give us your emergency contact details, fill in your ID (identity) cards and other paperwork. Weekly Schedule You will receive a schedule detailing your workshops, training sessions and performance tests. If you have any questions, please ask your Centre Manager.

You will have 15 hours of English classes each week and 15 hours of football coaching. You will have a break after each session.

What will I learn in my English classes? Through interactive technology and immersive language activities, you will improve your English communication skills while undertaking an exciting journey through the world of football, discovering life as a player, a manager, an analyst and a journalist. Each morning, you will learn about key elements of the profession, and each afternoon you will put these skills into practice in real-world football activities, such as: press conference and media interviews football analysis football commentating writing news stories

What kind of language activities will we do in class? You will have a variety of language activities in class including; speaking and listening activities, discussions and role plays, vocabulary activities, pronunciation practice, language practice activities, quizzes and surveys, daily revision tests and some language games. You will also have project lessons when you will work with a small group to make a short presentation to the other players. This might be a video, presentation or a play related to the things you have learnt during the course. Is there a syllabus and what materials will we use? The syllabus is provided at 3 levels: CEFR Level

The syllabus (the language you will study) is task-based and is all related to football. You will study lots of different areas and learn about the skills used by footballing professionals. Skills include; conducting player interviews, holding a press conference, football punditry and presenting a football innovation. The materials you will use in class are specially written by the academic managers and teachers at British Study Centres Young Learners. You will have PowerPoint language and vocabulary presentations, as well as video analysis of games in your lessons to give you plenty of opportunities to practice speaking, discussion, pronunciation and listening by talking to the other students in your class and your teacher. Will we have homework? Your teacher will give you some homework on most days which will take you about 10-15 minutes to complete. The homework might include looking at vocabulary of the day or reflecting on what you have done that day. The homework will help you revise the topic and language you have studied in class each day or prepare you for the next class. Will I get a report and certificate at the end of my course? Yes, your class teacher will write a report about your progress and participation during your course. You will also receive a certificate on the last day of your course, which will be presented to you in one of the hospitality suites at the Etihad Stadium. 9
Who should I talk to if I have a problem with my English classes or I am worried about something? If you have a problem with your class, talk to your teacher or the Director of Studies. If you are worried about anything else, or you have a personal problem you want to talk about, ask your Welfare Manager, Centre Manager or any member of staff. If you are still not happy, you can contact British Study Centres Young Learners head office (please see the student notice board ‘Complaints Notice’ for contact names, numbers and British Study Centres Young Learners head office address). Please tell us if you are worried or unhappy about something – we will listen and try to help you.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Every evening there will be supervised social activities at the residence. They usually start at 19.30 and you will see posters advertising the activities each night. It is important that you follow these rules when you are on activities with us: You must come to all the activities and excursions You must arrive on time – do not be late! Always respect staff members and other players Listen carefully to instructions from British Study Centres Young Learners staff
EXCURSIONS As part of your time at The Manchester City Football School’s Programme, you will go on a full day excursion, as well as an Etihad Stadium Tour and a visit to the National Football Museum. Remember these tips to help keep safe: r emember that the traffic is on the other side of the road (we drive on the left). Look both ways before you cross the road, and use the pedestrian crossings. Traffic will not stop for you if you step into the road. make sure you understand where the bus will depart from on the way home and what time you need to be there. It is a legal requirement to wear your seatbelt stay with your group at all times do not go off alone or with friends be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious behaviour to a member of staff always follow instructions from British Study Centres Young Learners staff

INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS International Players Coming to the UK on your own as an individual student is an exciting thing to do. We will do our best to help you have a great stay. This is an excellent chance to make friends from all over the world. If you are travelling alone (without a group) you will be given a mentor, a member of staff who will help you during your stay. They will meet you on your first day and show you where everything is. Get to know your mentor, it is their job to look after you—especially during your first few days. They will show you where to find them, and also how to contact them. Ask them any questions you may have. Your mentor will help you get to know your way around the centre, will introduce you to other players and you will soon make friends. If you have any problems, please ask your mentor—they are here to help.

MEALS Food may be different in the UK to your home country. The first big difference you may find is when eat your meals. Breakfast

During the week, you will receive two snacks a day. Food, Glorious Food! Hot meals are usually cooked in big dishes and then served to you by college staff. You need to queue and take a tray to carry your food. You will need to ask for the food you want - remember to say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’! There is usually a choice of vegetables, and normally there is salad and bread. In the UK we often have a dessert after the meal. This can be anything from a traditional pudding to yoghurt or fruit. Juice or water is always available. Don’t forget to put your tray away when you are finished. You will be told what to do with your empty plate and cutlery, make sure you follow the rules! If you have any serious food allergies please tell us when you book and also inform your Centre Manager when you arrive. All food will be labelled and all requirements will be taken into consideration.

RESIDENCE LIFE Living in halls of residence with British Study Centres Young Learners staff and fellow players is a fantastic opportunity to practise your English outside of classes. Here are some important rules to help you have a safe and happy time while living in residence. You must never leave the college campus alone or with friends You can only leave the college campus with British Study Centres Young Learners staff or with your Group Leader if they have permission from the Centre Manager You must be quiet in your residence bedrooms in the evenings The lights in your bedroom should be switched off by 23.00

YOUR SAFETY We want you to have an enjoyable experience while you are staying with us. We also want you to be safe at all times. We are committed to ensuring you all have the appropriate level of safety and protection whilst in our care. We have very extensive Safeguarding and Prevent Policies. Our staff are trained and will not tolerate any form of bullying, abuse or radical behaviour amongst our players or staff. Online safety We understand that you will spend time online as it can be a great way to socialise, explore and have fun. However please ‘be safe’ when online Make sure you know who you are speaking to Never give out personal details Never arrange to meet someone you don’t know Don’t look at images or content that make you feel uncomfortable Never engage in Bullying Limit your time online If you have any concerns about the above please tell a member of staff immediately
Security The Etihad Campus is a highly secure environment with perimeter fencing and CCTV, you will be taken to and from the residence in private dedicated coaches and accompanied by members of staff. The Salford University residential accommodation also has its own security measures in place. If you notice anything unusual or suspicious at the Etihad Campus or at the residence, please speak to a member of staff straight away.

DAMAGES It is very important to tell your leader or a staff member if you damage or break something, even if it was an accident. If you see another player causing damage, please report it to the Centre Manager.
WELFARE - Asking for Help If you have a problem, are worried about something, or you have a personal issue you want to talk about, ask your Welfare Manager, Centre Manager or any member of staff. Male and female staff members are available so you can decide who to talk to. If you are not sure who to ask for help, ask any member of our staff and they will assist you.
