British Council India
Executive Summary British Council’s EQUIPS (Education Quality Improvement Pathway for Schools) project for 32 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) started off with the MoU signing with the Government of Uttar Pradesh on 28 February 2013. Training for 64 teachers of the KGBVs (2 teachers from each KGBV) took place at DIET Bulandshahr from 05-08 August 2013 amidst the presence of mentor school teachers, trainees from DIET Bulandshahr and officials from the education department, Government of Uttar Pradesh. The following is the summary of the progress achieved mid-year: 1. Out of 32 KGBVs, 20 are doing excellent progress with the teachers taking initiative in imparting their knowledge to the children through the agreed projects. 2. The mentor schools have been in constant touch to each of the KGBVs for which they are responsible and have followed up with fortnightly telephonic calls and also face-to-face visits. 3. KGBVs that have faced difficulty in putting their plans to action have been mentored and guided to overcome the difficulties and experience the outcome of the activities. 4. Technical help has been provided to the KGBVs that have faced difficulty in capturing evidences for the programme. 5. In general, the KGBVs have faced the problem while implementing the school enterprise project as it required minimal funds to start the initiative. 6. Lack of Internet connection in the computer at each of the KGBVs is the major hurdle towards showing evidences online. 7. British Council will intervene and try and mentor the KGBVs directly who are behind the desired progress level.

Introduction This report comprises an overall overview of the activities that have taken place post the training of 100 teachers from 32 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) of the districts Meerut, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Hapur, Ghaziabad, and Bulandshahr. Teachers from 8 private mentor school teachers also attended the training at DIET Bulandshahr from 05 – 08th August 2013. The training was delivered by consultants on four modules, namely ‘Technology in Education’, ‘Global Citizenship’, ‘100 Words in Communication’ and ‘School Enterprise’ with a view to engage the teachers of the KGBV schools with activities pertaining to these modules. The mentor teachers were given the responsibility to act as a ‘friend’ or a companion to these schools and monitor progress simultaneously ensuring learning is prevalent throughout the project adhering to given timelines for each activity. Each mentor school was tagged with four Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas. The report captures the progress made by the schools so far and also the action plans prepared by them as appendices. In order to monitor the progress of action, telephone calls were made by mentor schools to their respective mentee schools and the responses have been captured in this report.

Use of technology—Outcome and Way Ahead The mentor teachers through their action plans have intended to use computer and basic ICT skills in the three modules i.e. school enterprise, global enterprise and 100 words for communication. The challenges lie in the facilities provided to the KGBV schools wherein the school computer systems are unable to communicate through email since there is no internet connection. Nevertheless the mentor teachers have extensively utilised MS Word and MS PowerPoint to showcase its usage and importance while working on every project.

Report Visit to Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya Dhaulana, Hapur District Date: December 02, 2013 Visiting Teachers: Ms. Lalita Srinivas, Ms. Anjali Mittal Our visit was covered by the Newspaper ‘Dainik Jagran’
Project 1: School Enterprise Students have grown vegetables like: Spinach, Coriander and Beans and are consuming them for the school canteen. This way, they are saving on the funds on buying vegetables from the market. Girls seemed to have ownership of the project and they are being engaged into the project after school hours. However, since the land has ashy soil, most of the vegetables grown have died. They have requested to put soil on the surface to the government. When we talked to the girls, we found them keen on taking on the entrepreneurship on Candle Making, DHOOP Making and Incense sticks making. We suggested them to brainstorm together and take on this project along with the existing one. The team has also clicked the photographs at various phases of programme execution. We suggested them to upload them online on Schools online portal.
The Team of students Heading the School Enterprise Project
We gave our feedback in the Booklet provided by the British Council.
Project 2: 100 Words The students made 10/100 words charts on the following topics: Birds, Body parts, Months, Vegetables, Cereals, Fruits. We were really delighted to see that children had learnt a lot of new words and many of them were able to answer simple questions. We conducted a Quiz on the new words they had learnt in school during the Morning Assembly and were delighted to see most of the girls raising hands and responding to our questions. We gave away prizes for each question.
We also observed their classrooms and found the 10/100 words charts on various topics being displayed in classrooms.
We conducted an activity: My 10 Words where using the British Council Toolkit provided to them, we asked them to write down 10 new words learnt during the month.
They pasted their sheets onto a Board.
We then asked all the girls to come to the Board and read what their classmates had written.
They gave SMILEYS to the sheets they liked. The girls earning 4,3, and 2 SMILEYS were awarded. Children enjoyed the activity a lot and learnt from one another.
Children did a 100 words Play on the theme- Every Animal is Special
Project 3: Global Citizenship We showed the Presentation on 5 Countries to students: Japan, UK, USA, Egypt, France We explained all about these countries to the children of KGBV in a very interesting way using English and Hindi language. Children seemed to be very excited about presentation and were curious to know more. Since the school had 3 good HP stations, but did not have internet connection. We suggested them to buy the internet dongle on reimbursable basis.
We gave our feedback on the project in the Booklet by the British Council.
Outcome of the Visit We had a very interactive session with teachers and students. We added to their existing knowledge through talking to them and showing presentations. Wherever, we felt improvement can be brought, we put across as suggestions. Overall, it was a fruitful visit and we found the project benefitting the students and teachers of the school.
