9 – Flags at half mast for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the LeMieux National Championships, where competitors and spectators paused to reflect on the passing of our monarch.

Salute to the LeMieux National Champion

IIt was a very different LeMieux National Championships this year at a time of national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the BD team and Show Direct steered a skilful path between celebrating our champions and the phenomenal international successes of our international teams this year while maintaining an atmosphere of respect and reflection.

However, The Queen embraced excellence in her own equestrian pursuits, breeding not just top class racehorses but also event horses and native ponies, and I’d like to think she would have been impressed with the soaring standards at the championships.

We were treated to an exceptional finale when Gareth Hughes had to pull out all the stops on Sintano Van Hof Olympia in the Kudos Grand Prix Freestyle Gold to hold off the challenge of Kathleen Kröncke with San Royal 3. It also gave a thrilling view of the future with Andrew Gould and Daniel Sherriff’s new Grand Prix superstars Indigro and I’m Bayford Hall Incognito delivering crowd-pleasing performances.

Talking of the crowds, the ‘Herning-feeling’ persisted, with much clapping and cheering to accompany freestyle competitors down the final centre line. This might not be everyone’s (or every horse’s) cup of tea, but it’s so good to see audiences really enjoying dressage again.

Quite rightly, more reserved appreciation was given to some of the rising stars, who produced exceptional performances. Charlotte Dujardin’s score of 80% on Times Kismet in the Andrews Bowen Advanced Medium Gold gave a scintillating taste of what is to come, while in the KBIS Young Horse Classes, the judges commented on the universally high standard and exemplary training on display.

Nurturing that talent, while treating each horse as an individual and allowing partnerships to grow will be high on the agenda for lead presenters Gareth Hughes and Michael Eilberg at our forthcoming National Convention, being held at Hartpury College and University on 26-27th November. Our new LeMieux National Champion and the winner of the KBIS Young Horse seven-year-old title should give some fascinating insights.

From two such great horsemen, the underlining message will be that we do this for the love of the horse. It is a love that we were lucky to share with our late Sovereign, THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE FOR BD MEMBERS | £5.00 | ISSUE 7 | 2022 and fortuitously, our new monarch, King Charles III.
