ProFessIoNAL ACCredITATIoN The British Master Barbers Alliance has been designed to help promote established British Barbers and their Barbershops. Good Barbershops struggle to stand out amongst the new breed of unskilled, untalented, uninsured chop shops that are under cutting prices and lowering the credibility of quality, qualified & trained barbers. Customers never ask to see a barbers qualifications or proof of skill and this is why we have created the British Master Barbers Accreditation, Verification of a barbers talent in the form of a beautifully crafted metal plaque. A sign customers can trust and the barber can be proud of. Only fully subscribed members who complete our criteria can apply.

a clear sign that customers can trust. It confirms that you hold a minimum standard of skill that is expected at each of our accreditation levels. BMB accreditation also offers a simple way to promote your business to your local area through our media press release, sent out confirming your successful completion of Master Barber and Grand Master Barber levels

IS ACCREDITATION COMPULSARY? Our accreditation service is by no means compulsory and is only recommended to barbers who understand the importance of keeping at the top of their game and continually chase goals to better themselves. This accreditation should be seen as a personal achievement that archives a high level of competence.

HOW DO I APPLY? We have 3 levels of accreditation available. Each level requires a set criteria of tasks to be completed for successful application. Applications can be made in the Members only area of this website.

WHY SHOULD I APPLY FOR ACCREDITATION? The BMB accreditation is simply designed to be

DOES IT MAKE ME A BETTER BARBER THAN EVERYONE ELSE? The simple answer is No. Everybody knows that you never stop learning and our accreditation is a confirmation of a minimum set level that provides a stepping stone to keep you enthused about the industry. Continuing your barbering journey to higher knowledge and skill set is a must at any level of competence and down to you to keep pushing the standard higher.

WHY DOES IT COST? As a non profit organisation The British Master Barbers make very little revenue to support the large costs involved with supporting the British barbering industry. Most of the costs are covered by the founders of BMB along with brand advertising, revenue made by our membership fees, product sales and accreditation. The BMB team is made up of long term full time working barbers and barbering lecturers who offer their time voluntarily and completely free of charge to asses the accreditation applications.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FAIL MY APPLICATION? If you fail your application you will be notified why and advised on how to improve your skill set or which requirements need to be met. You will then be allowed to apply again or change to the correct level suited to you.

We are so pleased to announce Mercedes Pagination as The British Master Barber of the year 2021. Being in the industry for over 10 years her skills clearly stood out amongst the vast amount of received entries. Currently She can be found working in a lovely Oxfordshire village called Bloxham and has been there since 2016. With help for the Photographic legend Liam Oakes to create her entry image it was one that kept popping out in front of the judges. The Black and white image along with modern dress added to the overall image but the haircut was main focus. A modern centre parting a slick look top layering into a gentle side length. A fresh look amongst the regular skin fades. Looking at her other work its clear to see she has a consistent feel with her image collections. We asked Mercedes what she enjoyed about the industry : “I absolutely love being a barber, both creatively and socially. I have a diverse clientele and enjoy haircuts that challenge me, it helps improve and develop my knowledge of hair.”

From humble beginnings in Soviet Latvia, Klinta Jones’ entrepreneurial spirit led her to the UK in 2006 where she has subsequently started three businesses. It was during the COVID-19 lockdowns that Jones’ decided to create an online coaching course for other barbershop owners to help them gain the skills necessary to build sustainable businesses when she found herself questioning: “When my job is “illegal”, what can I as a human being bring to society to help someone else?”. Still an artist at heart, Klinta can still be found back on the shop oor creating eye-catching looks for her dedicated clients. “Born in the late 80’s, I grew up in uenced by my parents’ music and fashion,” Jones explains. “Now, I'm at an age where I see trends making a comeback. With this collection I wanted to combine elements from my own timeline: from the 80’s to a 2020’s modern man.” Photography: Andy Kruczek Hair & Design: Klinta Jones Make up: Belle Make up

Bringing Barbers Back to Health. Looking a er your health and wellness is founder member of the BMB, Robert Dunsdon BA, BSc, MMCA, Senior Associate Royal Society of Medicine.

In this third ar cle on Barber health we are looking at ‘one of our industry’s most common condi ons of WRIST PAIN. For decades barbers and hairstylists have been plagued with wrist complaints like RSI and carpel Tunnel Syndrome What is Carpel tunnel? The Carpel tunnel is a small opening at the base of your hand and wrist. Through this opening nerves run down from your neck to your arm and into your hand, this is why some neck and shoulder problems can cause weakness in your hand and wrist. If you are unsure of the cause of your symptoms it always best to see a chiropractor or other health professional to make sure. How to spot the rst signs of Carpel Tunnel symptoms An ache or pain in your ngers, with or without numbness. Pins and needles in your hand as well as having dif culty gripping. Often the symptoms start off slowly and can be worse at night. A simple self test to see if you possibly have Carpel tunnel is Phalens test.

What is RSI? Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a general term used to describe the pain felt in muscles, nerves and tendons caused by repetitive movement and overuse. It's also known as work-related upper limb disorder, or non-speci c upper limb pain. The condition mostly affects parts of the upper body, such as the: • forearms and elbows • wrists and hands • neck and shoulders Symptoms of RSI The symptoms of RSI can range from mild to severe and usually develop gradually. They often include: • pain, aching or tenderness • stiffness • throbbing • tingling or numbness • weakness • cramp At rst, you might only notice symptoms when you're carrying out a particular repetitive action. But without treatment, the symptoms of RSI may eventually become constant and cause longer periods of pain. You may also get swelling in the affected area, which can last for several months. What to do if you think you have RSI

Ergonomic Scissors & Wrist Exercises

Ergonomic scissors : How they can help existing and future wrist? Tools have now been designed and have been proven to reduce repetitive strain on the wrists. These are called ergonomically designed and you can see some examples below from Spencer Scissors. Scissors are an essential hand tool for any Barber or hairdresser. Standard Scissors are straight or have only a slight curve in their design and require the barber to continually bend the wrist. The repetitive use of the ngers and forearm places a great deal of stress in the tendons that run through the Carpel tunnel of the wrist. Traditional Scissors by their design cause the wrist to be bent aggravating tendons and causing in ammation. Ergonomically designed Scissors prevent this and reduce the chance if a repetitive motion injury .

Regular wrist exercises will help keep you in good condi on that will prevent any down me. STRESS BALL EXERCISES Hand clench Clenching and unclenching your hand is one repetition. Instruction: With the side of your hand rested on a table, and your ngers and wrist straight, clench your hand into a loose st Hold for 2 seconds then unclench and straighten your ngers Side to side wrist bend Bending your wrist from left to right is one repetition. Instruction: With your palm rested on a table, and your ngers and wrist straight, bend your wrist to the left as far as is comfortable Hold for 2 seconds then bend your wrist back to centre Bend your wrist to the right as far as is comfortable Hold for 2 seconds then bend your wrist back to centre

Finger and thumb touch You could do this exercise while sitting and may nd it easier if you support your elbow on a table. One set back and forth is one repetition. Instruction: With your palm facing you, and your hand relaxed and open, touch your thumb to each nger in turn After touching your pinkie, reverse the order

My name is Sandra Odoh and I have been in the hairdressing industry for over 30 years. I studied hairdressing & beauty at college and worked as a Saturday girl for shop oor experience. After my course I was offered a full time job as a stylist. I have always cut men and women’s hair over the years. I became self employed 7 years ago and decided I wanted to add more barbering services to my business. I wanted to learn traditional barbering and modern barbering so I studied courses with Great British Barbering Academy, Wahl Academy and also Sid Sottung Academy. I became a member of British Master Barbers 3 years ago and was so impressed with the support, guidance and information available to each member. With BMB I was accredited rstly with Professional Barber Award followed by Master Barber Award and then Grand Master Barber Award, I am the 3rd female barber in the UK with this award and rst and only female barber in Scotland. I am also a member of the Hair and Barber Council and have been awarded Master Craftsman in both Barbering and Hairdressing. I wanted to progress into teaching so that I can share my knowledge and skills I have gained over the past 30 years. I have been on a lot of courses over the years and they inspired me to want to teach. I wanted to become quali ed and certi ed to teach so I searched online for training providers and I came across Train Aid. Their website was so easy to navigate around and I quickly found the course I wanted to book which was Level 3 Award in Education and Training, within minutes my course was booked. In May 2018 I went on the 3 day course in Glasgow. I thought it would be a bit daunting going by myself but my tutor was so friendly, warm and engaging and instantly put me and the rest of the students at ease. The course work was well structured, informative, enjoyable, easy to follow and fun. The rst two days were mostly theory learning about different learning styles and teaching methods, how to recognise, customise, adapt and teach students effectively and productively in a safe learning environment. For the third day all students on the course had to plan and deliver a micro teach. This was so bene cial as we were taught how to plan and write a lesson. The tutor assessed our teach and also other students were invited to give feedback on each other’s micro teach. After the 3 day course I had assignments to write and send in to get marked and I was delighted I had passed and got my quali cation. This course has given me the knowledge and skills to con dently teach to a high standard. I would encourage other BMB quali ed barbers to study with Train Aid to get your Level 3 teaching and training quali cation so that you can teach to a high standard giving your students the best learning experience. My plans for my business with my teaching quali cation is to continue writing courses, working with training academies in the industry, travelling abroad to teach barbering and health & safety, stage work and entering more competitions. I will continue learning myself by going on courses as I feel we are always learning new techniques, this helps to motivate us to be the best we can be. Our work inspires and encourages our youth of today to choose an exciting career in barbering. I would like to thank Train Aid for making their teaching course so enjoyable and informative and also I’d like to thank BMB for all their support, guidance and encouragement.

Members Zone My name is Mark Mc Sherry, from ARMAGH and proprietor of "the barber’ and honestly? Well I always wanted to be a barber;) growing up in Northern Ireland in the early 70,s back then a barbers was a place for people in the community to come to gather and meet as well as having a haircut and shave. I used to sit with the smells of vaseline hair tonic, old spice and bay rum and listen to my elders telling fascinating stories amongst the smokey atmosphere of the traditional barbers shop;)., back then I used to sit on a plank placed across the barbers massive chair to me who was ever do young and small lol it was a daunting task to have it done but I for one craved to be the man with the white coat one day on the other side of the chair! In the 70,s unisex became more the fashionable outlet when longer hair came into fashion with the Beatles in the late 60,s and ower power and hippies! In my wee part of the world the troubles broke out in 1969 and a haircut was even harder to get as a lot of areas where no go or you had trouble getting to amongst the barricades and ghting(( I continued as I got older to go to bigger cities like Belfast on the bus and have my haircut just to watch and learn from others, when it came my turn to learn as a school leaver I was given a dilemma to decide between the career I'd always wanted and had started or work at something else as I played soccer on a Saturday and had just signed for an Irish league club! Back then everyone wanted to be a George Best after all!My dad swayed me to go for a trade as a carpenter as I had a brother already a bricklayer.. Barbering took a back seat for many years but it didn't stop me having my haircut every week all over the country as I was fascinated still and the desire never left me!! I always promised myself when I quit football I would return to ful l my burning desires, many that knew me didn't believe I would lol.. Into the 90,s as a married man and a newly become father, it still burned inside of me the passion for cutting hair and to become that man in the shop that conducted more than just haircuts! Nearing the end of my footy days and after twice applying to go back to school to attain quali cations i enrolled the third time so at least I could get insurance and be taken seriously!! I wasn't going to work for anyone after being self employed for so long and having a successful contract business. I wanted that shop as soon as I could!!!

I ew through my courses after all I wanted this! The cutting I was rusty at! But the shaving I found easy as I had worked voluntarily in an old peoples home as a 15 year old for two Or three summers and any holidays and it was here I learnt to shave all the old gents morning and night with these big cut throat blades they all had in there drawers and me well I was fascinated by them. Many I admit had newspaper stuck to their face after I had nished but none the less it stood me in good stead!;)..back at college part time I was a mature student amongst a lot of young school leavers but it didn't deter me;).. Having obtained my certi cates I went and searched for a property local, doing it up was easy as I had worked on building sites for years! A trade I loved and one that took me a lot of places!! I lived in Birmingham in the late 80,s... I couldn't wait to open up!! I knew I had a trade to fall back in but failure was never an option in my head! I opened Xmas 2002 part time the other part of the week I continued as a joiner/ carpenter, I had a son to provide for plus a wife who worked so fairs fair..also a roof to keep over my head..I got that busy after a few months I made the decision to open up full time. I won an adult learners award for completing the courses so quickly,I featured in many of the countries daily newspapers and then BBC television came and lmed me and I was featured on the News. I was as a result asked to attend many schools etc and talk to the students that if you want something bad enough you can go get it!!....Also my tutor in college said I was the best she had taught in 18 years and put my name forward to teach. After a couple of interviews I was successful at becoming a part time lecturer of Barbering and Hairdressing NVQ level 2 and Level 3 Shaving and all this within three years after opening my own shop. I started on my own and intended staying on my own as many barbers worked solo when I was young, but as I got busier I had to hire help.. Also I had the teaching at night classes! To cut a long story short Business grew and without even noticing my trade got bigger and i Ended up 5 employees on my books. Ive retrained any hairdressers to barbers I’ve taken on and I take placements from college every year as I try to pass on any experience that I have, I tell them all it’s the same for me, “We all learn everyday”.. I became involved in charity work when I was 20 Inspired by my late granny MC sherry who was involved in charity work herself all her life, and of course "Live aid" in 1985 inspired to start me off! I still do Charity work today I have been a member of Chest Heart and Stroke for years and then was made an Ambassador. In 2015 I was awarded a prestigious Scouting Ireland Award for my work in the community, then only a few weeks later the Mayor of ARMAGH held a night for my family and friends at the Palace in ARMAGH to honour me for all my work of over 30 years! I was so humbled words can never explain any of it. No matter my Granny always said "Ye give good Ye get good" someone asked me recently was a barber someone who cuts men's hair?? I said no! A barber to me is someone who listens, talks, gives advice, and is part of the community.. he also cuts hair not just in your head but in your ears, nose, on your face and I even trim chests if I'm asked! I never take any day for granted I love to go to work to meet people be nice to my staff and feel appreciated back in return, if everyone feels good then life’s a little easier, I’d like to think judging by the reviews etc my shop is a safe haven for anyone that enters and they leave happier than when they entered. Fast forward to today the barber still offers male grooming and also Mens hair replacement has been added. As we all know Covid has since come along and been a hard one for us all eh! it’s nearly been like starting again in some ways, yes we all lost trade well those of us that respected the guidance rules and laws.. with the black market home haircuts etc but thankfully with lots of loyal clients and even with all the lockdowns my passion for barbering had never faded. I’m down to two employees again at the minute and to be honest it’s less stressful and just as rewarding. I used a lot of my time off to update and renovate my shop and having had several awards over the years in barbering and being a hair council Master Craftsman well receiving this Grand Master Accreditation from the BBA Im delighted to say the least after the last two testing years:) “A barber til I die “ big love Mark x
