Modern wonders on sand
Everything in Dubai is bigger and better, and all of it risen from the sand. By Huma Baig

...this hustling, bustling city is a magnet for tourism, business and employment...
In 1966, Sheikh Rashid utilised oil revenues to develop an infrastructure in Dubai, and today this hustling, bustling city is a magnet for tourism, business and employment. These investments have paid off handsomely and UAE has become one of the richest countries in the world Dubai boasts luxury shopping, ultramodern architecture, unmatchable hotels, world-class sporting events and a lively nightlife scene. The biggest tower in the world stands at 830 metres in height and is found in Dubai. Burj Khalifa dominates the skyscraperfilled skyline of this vibrant city. It cost $1.5 billion dollars to construct; at its foot lies the man-made 30-acre long Burj Khalifa Lake which forms a foundation for the Dubai Fountain - the world’s largest choreographed fountain system, with powerful jets and beautiful lights. Dubai is home to 200 man-made islands which were constructed from 5.5 million cubic metres of pure rock and 94
8
million cubic metres of sand - no steel or iron were used to form their base. The beautiful Burj Al Arab hotel presides over the coastline of Jumeirah beach at 1,053 feet high and is unique in that it is the world’s only seven-star hotel. This iconic structure sits gracefully on its very own man-made isle, held together by sand and offering luxurious services such as helicopter rides, and tennis courts 1,000 metres above the ground. Such a well planned development of a city built on sand means that there is something for everyone. You can do a spot of shopping, dispense pure gold from a cash point, soak up the sun on a beach, get the adrenaline rushing at a theme park or explore mountains and deserts to investigate the origins of this modern city. Dubai - the land of modern wonders beautifully raised from the sand awaits your discovery.
Interview
Women breaking barriers in the media: Noreen Khan Do you believe the Media has promoted Women’s rights and highlighted their achievements, helping to open doors for women in the industry? Could you tell us how this has helped you?
I think media has improved the chances and opportunities for women a lot over recent years and some employers want to ensure that they represent men and women equally. I still think there is a long way to go; media jobs can still be dominated by men.
You recently went on a trip to Pakistan - courtesy of the British Asian Trust - what is your role with them, and what were you doing there?
I went as an Ambassador for the Trust to observe the mental health projects that there are for women in Karachi: It was so good to see how the funding is helping these women in some of the poorest parts of Karachi.
What barriers did you face when you first started out as a Female DJ and what did you find most difficult when you entered the media industry? How does this compare to your challenges now? I get asked this question a lot but in all honesty when I started out no one said to me ‘We won’t take you on because you’re a woman’. I have a very strong sense of belief in myself and never let my gender get in the way, or let it subconsciously undermine me. There have been times in recent years though where I think some work has gone to a male rather than me, simply because he is male! Unfortunately that is the world we live in and something we all need to strive to change.
What has been the most challenging experience you feel you have confronted, and how has that made you a stronger person.
The most challenging thing for me personally has actually been trying to juggle my personal and work lives. A few years ago my father became very ill and I was close to either quitting or reducing my workload so I could spend more time with him. I can handle most things in life which are work related, but when it comes to my parents I’m very protective of them and sometimes maybe get a little too obsessed about their well-being!!
Has anyone helped you climb the ladder, or have you done it all by yourself?
I’m a real grafter but I don’t think anyone ever gets to become successful all by themselves. My friends, family and
10

people who have given me work opportunities deserve a lot of the credit too.
Have you come across any differences in opinions when you have worked in a male dominated workplace, which has resulted in your male colleagues being preferred over you? If so, how did you deal with it? Yes I’ve sometimes felt that my male colleagues occasionally have an advantage for simply being male. This has frustrated me, but at the same time made me more determined to prove that I can do the same, or even better than anyone else. I am a very strong minded character so I don’t easily let setbacks bother me.
A Radio DJ, a Host, a TV Presenter and more recently a Stand-up Comedian, how has the impact of all this contributed towards your overall success?
I think my genuine passion for the things that I do and pursue comes across clearly and has helped me get to where I am. My supporters and followers have seen my journey, and luckily have supported me all the way. I feel very grateful to have good people in my life.
What positive words can you share to other women entering the media industry?
I would say don’t let anything put you off pursuing something you are very passionate about. If I had listened to what people said about media I probably wouldn’t have entered the industry!
What are the biggest challenges you face in the industry today?
In this fast moving world and industry you have to stay relevant. I feel lucky though that I don’t ever worry about it too much and just do what excites and makes me happy. I believe everything can become a challenge or an obstacle if you let it.
Name five women in your life you are proud of and why?
My mum My best friend My sisters (there’s 4!) These women are the closest to me and have been since the beginning of my life and journey. I’m very grateful to have them in my life as they’ve just been there for me. I’ve always drawn strength from strong women.

Magical and positively breathtaking the Northern Lights Words – Angela Youngman The Northern Lights are one of nature’s most spectacular sights. The great swathes of yellow, green, red, blue and violet can provide as much light as the moon at its brightest. The hardest part is finding them. Notoriously elusive, there is never any guarantee as to where and when they will appear: sometimes all night, sometimes only part of the night, sometimes not at all. Chasing the Northern Lights is becoming one of the most popular winter holiday activities, attracting visitors to locations as far afield as northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Lapland, Norway and Russia. There have been occasional glimpses of the Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis as they are also known) off the Norfolk coast, but this is extremely rare; and in the depths of winter they may be seen in the far reaches of Scotland. To see them at their best, however, you do have to travel into the Arctic Circle. So what exactly are the Northern Lights? They are caused by a combination of solar winds and gases along the Earth’s magnetic field creating a brilliantlycoloured display. It is totally weather dependent, but whenever it is visible you are guaranteed an incredible, natural light show. Wherever you are lucky enough to see them, the Northern Lights are stunning – exceptionally so whenset against a backdrop of snow blanketed forests, lakes, ice and sea. Lapland – an area crossing northern Norway, Sweden and Finland – is often described as ‘the land of the midnight sun’,
12
signifying the frequency of the Northern Lights in this area. The best time to see them is between September/ October and February/March. The best way is to take a winter safari, gliding through miles of snow covered forests and ice covered lakes. Ranua Wildlife Safaris in Rovaniemi offer guided excursions to see the lights by snowmobile or on a sleigh ride pulled by Finn horses. Expeditions can take up to four days, travelling through the wilderness, seeing the wildlife (including polar bears) and staying overnight in log cabins. Throughout the winter period, the Finnish Aurora Service Tours take groups on long distance trips to find breaks in the clouds,

in order to spot the Northern Lights. The tour guides use the most up to date technology to identify locations, which results in a 99% success rate. Visitors can combine hunting for the Northern Lights with a stay in a remote wilderness site offering a range of day time activities, such as snow shoeing along a hiking track, driving a snowmobile through snow covered forests and across frozen lakes,or even travelling in a sleigh pulled by huskies. Alternatively, visitors can opt for a location closer to one of the Lapland towns and discover the unique, indigenous Sami culture. Many people, including astronomers, head for the quiet town of Kiruna in Swedish Lapland. The nearby Abisko National Park houses a special Aurora Sky Station where you can board a chairlift which takes you to an observation tower. The station is famed for its views of the clear skies and its pitch black mountain setting. Once there, you can stay as long as you like to watch the sky, or take refuge from time to time beside the station’s log fire enjoyingsome delicious food and drink. Perhaps you prefer a more leisurely cruise to see the lights? Hurtigruten offer a regular programme of twelve day Norwegian coastal cruises travelling up into the Arctic Circle. Operating between October and March, Hurtigruten promise that if the Northern Lights do not make an appearance during the voyage, they will provide another voyage for free. This is definitely a very relaxing way to see nature’s lightshow, whilst enjoying the opportunity to visit some fascinating places. The ships cruise along majestic fjords, visit coastal cities like Trondheim and provide snowmobile excursions: Discover the Sami culture, visit the Lofoten heritage site and watch the sea eagles. There are also Polar History walks to find out about explorers and Arctic hunters. Experts on astronomy accompany some cruises, providing talks about the stars and the Northern Lights. Cruise & Maritime Voyages also run a series of Northern Lights cruises departing from UK ports such as Liverpool, Hull, Bristol and London Tilbury. These operate between September and April. Some of the cruises include Iceland and the Faroes; others focus on the Norwegian coast. A variety of excursions are available to historic sites such as Lerwick, Skara Brae, the Troll Wall or the vintage steam Rauma Railway. A trip to the dramatic 307 metre high cliff at North Cape is intensely memorable as you look out over the endless sea towards the North Pole. Anyone wanting a more adventurous experience can always try a glacier discovery by snow truck Iceland, the land of Fire and Ice, offers brilliant contrasts of wintry landscapes, steaming hot volcanic geysers and brilliant displays of colour provided by the Northern Lights. Cruises around the coast or driving into the far north of Iceland provide the best views. Don’t miss the stunning crescent shaped Godafoss waterfall or the lunar like craters at Skutastadir, before trying out a nature bath in one of the many spas. Over in Greenland, Tasermuit offer holidays of glacier trekking and kayaking, exploring the polar ice cap and discovering the Arctic fauna. whilst there you stay in camps and hostels regularly used by astronomers to observe the Northern Lights. This is definitely an adventurous opportunity, where you need to be
14
reasonably fit and willing to learn new skills as you navigate through icebergs or clamber across the ice. There are plenty of opportunities to chase the Northern Lights, as they can be seen almost every day from late summer onwards, whenever the sky is clear. Churchill, Nunavik and Whitehorse in Manitoba, northern Canada are also worth considering: Set amid a vast wilderness where grizzly bears and Polar bears roam, while Beluga whales swim in the icy seas. Churchill is actually sited right beneath the Northern Lights auroral oval, a huge ring circling the magnetic North Pole, and is regarded as one of the best places from which to see the Northern Lights. Anyone preferring pure luxury and comfort as a means of seeing the Northern Lights can opt for a trip on the Golden Eagle Luxury Train Arctic Explorer – Quest for the Northern Lights which travels deep into the Russian Arctic Circle. Leaving St Petersburg, you snuggle comfortably into luxurious cabins, enjoying high class food in the dining car or chatting to other passengers in the lounge. The wide windows offer superb views of the countryside, and during the long nights the Northern Lights often illuminate the skies. A guest astronomer provides talks and information; you can also learn some of theRussian language as well as enjoying a range of cultural activities en route. Stop off at Kirkenes and take a break in the Snow Hotel, just across the Norwegian border, and try fishing for crabs through snow holes, or take sledge rides pulled by Huskies. Visit Murmansk, a city half way between Moscow and the North Pole, Lake Onega (the second largest lake in Europe) and/or the historic city of Vladimir before ending the journey in Moscow. Whatever your choice, there can be no doubt that chasing the Northern Lights is guaranteed to be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. www.wildlifesafaris.fl www.tours.aurora-service.eu www.cruiseandmaritime.com/destination/northern-lights-cruises www.hurtigruten.co.uk www.tasermiutgreenland.com www.goldeneagleluxurytrains.com
Empowering Women By Rikki Knight
Islam came down in order to liberate women, men were ordered to cease the practice of killing their daughters, a limitation was put on the number of wives a man was allowed to have and woman was given rights to inheritance. Modesty was for her protection and her status as a mother was raised towards a gateway leading to Jannah: The beauty of which many of us cannot comprehend. All of this, yet we see very little action to uphold the liberation of our women today. More so the advice that has been given has been manipulated to cause her stagnation. Love has often been replaced with control, and that control has been justified as Love. Stroking the male ego has become praiseworthy, an act of a dutiful wife, alongside a detachment from self aspiration. After speaking with many women who reiterated the same woes, I was stuck with the question why? Why was this mentality so common? Why were so many women being penalised and fed with a misinterpretation of their faith? Maybe it was due to a lack of understanding, which was rarely tackled and which benefited a lot of the men in our community patriarchy. Maybe it was due to the way we have been raised and the ideas that have been instilled in us about our roles in relationships and society. Whatever the reason I began to realise that deep down a lot of men see the empowerment of women as a threat to their manhood. You see, generally speaking, the man is the provider: He is supposed to offer support and protection: He is supposed to be the leader. So, the moment he sees that his wife can support herself, or has been given the opportunity to widen her prospects: he begins to feel that his role could be replaced. The whole idea is a complete misconception. To empower women is to empower a nation. The woman raises and cultivates the next generation, so if the woman is broken it will soon
16
be reflected in society. Respect and love is achieved through support and the efforts given to empower one another. Surely one of man’s tasks is to be mindful of his privileges and ensure that he acts justly with what Allah has given him responsibility over. The growth of your spouse, sister or daughter should be admired, encouraged and valued.
Love has often been replaced with control, and that control has been justified as Love. This should be the case even when the growth doesn’t look as you expected it to. Another factor that plays a role in stagnating female progress is fear; fear that if given enough choice or freedom the female will lose herself. The truth is that enforcing your wants onto another human being which causes restrictions, is likely to make those fears a reality, especially when it comes to marriage; it is important to remember that your spouse is not your child. Many times we hear of the qualities, role and responsibilities of a righteous wife, in depth. We’ve been raised upon these narratives, educated from a young age, to the point it is embedded in our being. This guidance is not for us to forget but it is now important that woman should also feel fulfilment. It is essential for true harmony within the household, and for constructive growth in our community.
A Taste of Paradise at the Coconut Whispers Spa
By Tahira Khan
This deluxe body and soul nurturing treatment is a new detail-oriented experience and is divided into three steps to accomplish the overall elements of spiritual relaxation, stress reduction and improved blood circulation. Firstly, guests head into the Temazcal to allow the heat to open the pores of the entire body. The Temazcal is an ancient, dome-shaped sweat lodge used by a variety of indigenous groups for purification purposes. The philosophy behind the treatment is a return to the womb to be spiritually separated from the outside world and reconnected with one’s inner self. Next, guests are covered in a warm mud treatment, which is left on the body in order to strengthen and revitalise the elasticity of the skin. Whilst waiting for the mud treatment to dry, guests receive a corporal massage, focused on the head, hands and the soles of the feet. Once the mud treatment dries you are then rinsed off by your assigned therapist. www.britishmuslim-magazine.com
You are finally submerged into an organically prepared coconut milk bath and are left alone to relax. Pre-Hispanic cultures considered these baths revitalizing and necessary to protect the body and soul from negative energies. The coconut milk is rich in vitamins C, E, K, B, and is prepared in-house. The duration of the treatment is 120 minutes, including additional time allowed for guests to remain in the lounge area. The unique nature of the Coconut Whispers Spa relies on the effective use of every part of the coconut; from using the outer shell to create exfoliators, to grinding the coconut meat for facials and using the extracted milk for the bath. To complete the full coconut-themed experience of the spa, guests are given a refreshing drink straight from young coconuts, handpicked from the surrounding palm trees. A day out to the RAF Museum
The Dambusters Raid exhibition. Words – Angela Youngman Flying across the skies of a war torn Europe, with the everpresent risk of being attacked, on your way to take part in an extremely hazardous mission must be terrifying. Yet, for pilots and aircrew during the early 1940’s, this was normal. Trying to imagine what it must have been like for them to do this time and time again is difficult, but no longer impossible. All it takes is a visit to the Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon, in north London. A new experience, yours to try for a reasonable fee, has just opened at the museum and British Muslim Magazine went along to try it out. Dambusters: Immersive Histories uses incredibly innovative virtual reality technology to enable visitors to experience one of the most iconic bombing missions of the Second World War. The experience involves the use of 4D technology, where you not only see and hear all that is happening around you – but you actually feel it as if you were there on the day the mission took place. It is the first time that such technology has been used in this way, in a museum, to take people back into the past. The Dambusters Raid exhibition is tucked away in a corner of Hanger 5. On display are information panels setting out the background of the raid on the Ruhr dams. Destroying them was seen as crucial to the Allied war effort, as it would damage German industrial production. With the dams heavily guarded, it seemed to be an almost suicidal mission. Led by
18
Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the crew of 617 squadron set out on a mission to destroy the three dams in the Ruhr Valley. They carried an innovative ‘bouncing bomb’, created by engineer Barnes Wallis, which would skip across the water, hitting the dam in exactly the right spot. To do so, the planes had to fly just 60 feet above the water at an exact speed and on an exact course from which they must not deviate. Ultimately it took five attempts on that historic night before the Möhne Dam was breached and they could move onto the Eder. The death toll among the crews was high – out of 133 aircrew taking part, 53 were killed. On display in the exhibition are original moulds of the first bouncing bombs, the balls used by Barnes Wallis to test his theories, his office and a replica of the bouncing bomb. A wooden mockup of the cockpit of a Lancaster bomber occupies one side of the exhibition area. At first sight it looks really innocuous and not very inspiring, but the moment you don the virtual reality headset and the special heptic vest, everything changes. Darkness falls, and you are transported back to the 1940’s. Beneath your feet, the floor is vibrating from the power of the plane’s engines, as you fly through the sky. Voices crackle over the intercom, and aircrew come into view dressed in uniform, carrying out the checks and tasks necessary for the mission. Reaching out, you seem to feel the fuselage around you, the desk
at which you are sitting and it is as if you are looking through the window. Outside the moon is shining brightly, providing an uninterrupted view of the countryside far below. Before long, enemy searchlights start picking out the aircraft as it begins its approach towards the Möhne dam. Looking out of the window, the water in the dam is disturbingly close, so close you can even see waves, seemingly close enough to touch. The searchlights pinpoint the aircraft, gunfire rattles past and you can feel the turbulence rippling through the cockpit. Calmly Gibson maintains his course, dropping his bomb, before circling round to view any damage. With the dam remaining intact, other bombers move in. Pilot John Hopgood takes his plane – call sign M-Mother – across, but is hit and crashes, his plane and all on board burned in the resultant fire. Suddenly your plane is moving again as Gibson prepares for more attempts, trying to distract enemy fire from his colleagues as they line up to bomb the dam. The plane shakes and reverberates constantly. Finally the dam is breached, and the water rushes out in a noisy, massive torrent. This is definitely the nearest you can possibly get to actually being on the plane that night. The experience is amazing, although slightly disorientating when your hand seems to disappear if you move it in certain directions!
....you actually feel it as if you were there on the day the mission took place....
Jenny Elmes, who is a descendent of John Hopgood and has written a book about him, was also trying the Dambusters experience. She commented, “It was brilliant and very realistic. Being part of Guy Gibson’s crew worked very well. I loved the night sky with the full moon and the Lancaster wing out to my right. Being able to stand up and look around made you feel that you were really there.” “When M-Mother came into view, my heart missed a beat and the gunfire from the dam wais just as I imagined it. M-Mother didn’t stand a chance. To see the plane explode and fall at an angle like a bonfire on the adjoining land was very realistic.” There is no doubt that the Dambusters Experience has achieved its aim – to explore the human story of the real people who were in the aircraft, and what it was like to be there. Even when your visit to the Dambusters Experience is over, there is still much to see, as the Royal Air Force Museum has countless historic aircraft on display, as well as numerous hands on activities, such as being able to digitally construc an aircraft. Yet dominating all these options is one massive airplane – the Lancaster Bomber. This majestic, inspiring aircraft sits not far away from the Dambusters Experience, a reminder of the major role that it played in the raid. The Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon is free to enter. The Dambusters: Immersive Histories does incur a charge - £10 per participant, but is definitely worth every penny! www.britishmuslim-magazine.com

Zurich’s picturesque backdrop From creamy cheese, the finest chocolate and rich culture to snow-capped mountains, large lakes and grand waterfallsSwitzerland has it all! Huma Baig takes you on a journey to see some of the natural wonders of its biggest city‌ Due to its business representation, Zurich it appears to be very conservative but there are very few things that you cannot find here. This quirky city has breath-taking scenery at every corner! The Lake of Zurich is the fifth largest in Switzerland covering an area over 88 kilometres. The curved, almost banana-shaped, Lake Zurich is framed by the hilly landscape of Albis and Zimmerberg on the south side of the lake, and by the Pfannenstielkette on the north side, bordering on the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen and Schwyz. Whether you want to submerge yourself in its glorious
20
views, take your loved one on a romantic outing or you’re looking for a vibrant party hotspot, a cruise on this lake is one of the most popular things to do in Zurich and promises to cater for all aboard. The next unmissable scenic stop is the largest waterfall in Europe and is located on the border of Schaffhausen and Zurich. The Rhine Falls are 159 metres wide and 23 metres high which means that the extensive water volume never fails to fascinate visitors. At the foot of Laufen Castle are platforms where unobstructed views of this magnificent spectacle of nature can be enjoyed. A boat ride to the Rhine Falls basin, the rocks in the middle of the Rhine and downstream to the national border, or further to the Rheinau power plant is also worthwhile for the brave hearts. Also, for them is an Adventure Rope Park so you
can relish the incredible view of Rhine Falls whilst gliding from tree to tree. Last but in no way least, a trip to Mount Uetliberg is a must when visiting Zurich. Standing tall at approximately 870 meters, this forms part of the Albis chain in the Swiss plateau and offers impressive panoramic views of the city, the lake and the Alps. As a popular destination all year around, trails to this mountain offers hiking trails in the summer and sledging routes in the winter. With a look-out tower and restaurant it’s the perfect spot for sunset watching before a scrumptious dinner. So, even though art galleries, creamy cheese productions and gorgeous cathedrals come to mind when thinking of Switzerland’s financial hub; it’s impossible to overlook Zurich’s incredibly picturesque backdrop. www.britishmuslim-magazine.com

Murree has certainly retained its position as a popular hill station, noted for its pleasant summers. The town of Murree also serves as a transit point for tourists visiting Azad Kashmir and Abbottabad, and we met a lot of Brits there.
Next stop…LAHORE!
The area of Lahore is steeped in history and heritage and never disappoints in pleasing visitors! It is the country’s second-most populated city, after Karachi, and the largest city and historically cultural centre of the Punjab region, as well as being Pakistan’s most socially liberal and cosmopolitan city. The area is always buzzing and has some amazing places to eat. What to see? – Lahore Fort, Shalimar Bagh & Badshahi Mosque Where to Shop? There are so many places: Packages; Liberty; The Emporium Mall & Panorama Shopping Centre. Where to eat? – Take a stroll down Food Street and take your pick from a few lovely local rooftop restaurants.
24
Don’t miss - Kashmir Point – the highest spot in Murree, famous for its picnic areas. Where to shop? Hit Mall Road and shop until you drop Where to eat? The Shangria is a great place to eat continental and local flavours.
Swat - White Palace Marghazar is the only breath-taking location in the Swat district area and is situated at a distance of around 12 km from the city of Mingora. Not only do tourists visit Marghazar for its natural beauty and pleasant weather, but also to visit the historic White Palace (1941), built during the era of Swat State. After the White Palace was
constructed on the directive of the founder of modern Swat State, Miangul Abdul Wadood, also known as Badshah Sahab, Marghazar, it became a popular visitors attraction. Even today, after seven decades, White Palace remains an attraction for tourists. The Palace doesn’t just look beautiful in summer; even during winter it remains enchanting, especially after snowfall.
Islamabad – this is where you can visit the famous Faisal Mosque, which stands tall and strong on Shah Faisal Avenue. Islamabad is also the capital city of Pakistan and many locals hold a very liberal view on life. Karachi - Mubarak remains the second largest fishing village in Karachi. Bordering with Gadani (Balochistan), the landscape encircles a stark contrast of golden hills and turquoise clear waters. Away from the city frenzy, this place welcomes you with a lot of love. As soon as you park near the shore, you can see numerous boats anchored, floating on crystal clear waters, beneath the expansive blue sky.

25
Baltistan - Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghanche district stands almost aloof with its beautiful valleys and settlements inhabited by the most hospitable locals and has river irrigated lands. The central location in the district is Khaplu, which is a beautiful landscape with high summits, flowing blue waters and waterfalls. The people of this small settlement on the bank of River Shyok, are as warm and loving as they have been for centuries. Going a little ahead from Khaplu, the winding road takes one to the delta of River Shyok, where it splits, flowing through the gravel filled river plain. The Peak of Mashabrum Mountain can also be seen in the backdrop.
Azad Jammu & Kashmir consist of a few areas, which include Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Rawalakot, Kotli, Poonch. There was so much to see in Azad Kashmir, from Neelum Valley, which is a beautiful long river with a very scenic backdrop and great panoramic views of the amazing Himalaya Mountains, to Red Fort and Black Fort located on the bank side of the Neelum River in Muzaffarbad. Climbing and trekking, as well as mountaineering, would be very enjoyable here in the summer months. Other amazing places to see in Pakistan include Multan, Baluchistan & Skardu.
26
Pakistan has four seasons: a cool, dry winter from December through February; a hot, dry spring from March through May; the summer rainy season, or southwest monsoon period, from June through September; and the retreating monsoon period of October and November.

Behind the sustainable fashion world of Rabia Z Rabia Zargarpur is a pioneer in every sense of the word. A multi-award-winning fashion designer and business woman, who not only embraces world standards, but is helping to set them. A decade before anyone had thought of the term ‘modest fashion’, Rabia was already designing it. Today, she is at the forefront of championing ethical and sustainable fashion, placing this system and philosophy at the heart of her fashion creations and business practices, whilst inspiring many others to do the same. In addition to running her own Rabia Z label, last year the mother-of-three launched the Rabia Z Modest Fashion Academy to run alongside her mentoring programme to nurture the next generation of designers. More recently, she’s found time to collaborate with the world’s leading modest fashion e-tailer Modanisa.com. The collection, unveiled at the second edition of Istanbul Modest Fashion Week over the Easter weekend, goes on sale in May. We caught up with the Dubai-born Afghani-American entrepreneur during her Istanbul show, to ask about her career and the new Rabia Z x Modanisa collection.
For me, sustainable fashion is both a philosophical and a practical approach to the clothes we manufacture. It’s a system that puts the environment and humanity before profit. This shapes my brand outlook and ethos at every level. It’s not easy to be 100% sustainable, as Stella McCartney – one of the best in high-end sustainable fashion – also says. But that is what we are striving for. At Rabia Z, from the beginning of the brand’s life, we have always worked exclusively with pure and natural fabrics and designs that have a much longer shelf life than seasonal trends. This has made it easier for us to move towards sustainability, working with bio-degradable fabrics that don’t leave a negative footprint on the environment or cause israf. We never produce polyester hijabs, including chiffon hijabs because it is harmful to the scalp and for the environment; it doesn’t breathe, nor does it dissolve into the earth when eventually thrown away. It is a responsibility that I take very seriously. If I won’t wear it knowing that it is bad for me, I can’t offer it to our customers either. I urge everyone to read about the importance of ethical and sustainable fashion, including from an Islamic perspective.
When and why did you decide to get into modest fashion?
What can you tell us about your new collection for Modanisa?
I started designing womenswear and bespoke couture gowns for brides when I was in my first year of fashion school in New York, whilst working part-time at Valentino. My first experience with the sector was therefore very much in the mainstream fashion industry. It was after I took up wearing the hijab in 2001, during the tragic 9/11 events, when I realised that there were no modern ready-to-wear labels which catered to the needs of the modest dressed woman. Not a single one! For a professional fashion designer and fashionista, it was a shock to arrive at that realisation. This is when I started to create high quality ready-to-wear work wear, tunics and hijabs that were made with breathable fabrics. The first hijab I designed was a ready-made turban to overcome the difficulties hijab-wearing women faced, as hate crime was rampant in those days. I wanted to shatter stereotypes around hijab-wearing Muslim women and to make the everyday practical clothing aspect of their lives easier.
28
By early 2002, I started my own online shop. It was one of the first e-commerce stores in the world which specialised in modern modest fashion for women.
How do you reconcile your desire for sustainable fashion with viable business practices?
For my collaboration collection, Rabia Z x Modanisa – ‘Basics, Re-imagined’ line, the challenge was to have sustainable pieces at affordable, fast-fashion prices that were also ethically sourced. The aim was to prove that ‘yes you can be ethical, sustainable and affordable’, which many still think is not possible. It’s a really versatile high-street capsule collection with my signature ‘effortless-chic’ aesthetic and breathable fabrics. We’ve called it ‘Basics, Re-imagined’, because it transforms basics into high fashion for every woman. The capsule consists of dressed-up long organic t-shirts, paired with ecofriendly jeans, and chic shirt-dresses and pants in sustainable tencel and high-quality cotton-sateen, as well as some exclusive pieces for Ramadan/Eid – all within an accessible price range. InShaAllah, my sisters around the world will love it!

Romantic and impressive Castles dominate the UK landscape 30
By Angela Youngman
With flags fluttering from turrets, these are buildings that are steeped in history; of battles won and lost, fairy tales and ghosts; and you no longer need to be a prince or princess to stay there. Just as for a lord or lady of old, the stunning castle backdrops can provide the perfect setting for family celebrations, weddings or special events. Across the UK there are numerous castles that can be hired for your exclusive use. Privacy is guaranteed. The only other people on site are likely to be the castle owners and their staff. During your stay, the castle is yours to enjoy. The choice of castles available is extensive; from medieval buildings like Walton Castle to Victorian gothic, Scottish baronial or Tudor mansions. The accommodation is luxurious and often includes antique furniture and furnishings; some may even have State Apartments, providing a majestic setting for any celebration. Prices vary considerably, depending on the size and location of the property, the size of your group, and the facilities you are seeking. Many castles are registered as wedding venues, and can provide everything required, from flowers to registrars; guest accommodation; receptions; and honeymoon suites. Additional accommodation is frequently available in adjacent courtyards and cottages within the grounds, enabling even the largest groups to be accommodated in privacy. Bespoke packages can be arranged – all you have to do is ask.
Over at Cringletie near the Scottish border town of Peebles, the owners have arranged all kinds of unusual wedding requests, from barn owls flying in with the rings, horse-drawn carriages, weddings with alpacas and fireworks over the lawns: French castle style turrets, magnificent gardens and a romantic bridge over a river provide a stunning backdrop for photographs. Much depends on what you are looking for. No two castles are the same, thus offering considerable versatility regarding the location. Perhaps you want something stately, or prefer something intimate, or reminiscent of a fairy tale; maybe a coastal location or one inland? As an island nation, coastal castles and forts have always played a major role in the history and heritage for visitors. Down in Cornwall, Polhawn Fort has been described as ‘the most romantic Wedding venue in the UK’. Hidden in a small cove with its own private beach, access is gained over a drawbridge; inside a spiral staircase leads into the massive eighty foot long vaulted hall. Across the Irish Sea, Belle Isle near Enniskillen occupies its own private island. The high sculpted windows flood lavishly furnished rooms with masses of natural light, and grand four www.britishmuslim-magazine.com

poster beds add a touch of extra romance. At the heart of the castle is an imposing Grand Hall, complete with a Minstrel’s gallery, making it ideal for wedding festivities. Sleek triangular shaped turrets, balconies and walkways create a fairytale ambience, surrounding the French style Chateau Rhianfa on the Island of Anglesey. This lies just off the coast of Snowdonia: Built by Sir John Hay-Williams as a special gift to his wife, Lady Sarah, in memory of their travels through the Loire Valley in France; it is beautifully romantic. Combined with a spectacular setting, the opulent, elegant interiors make this a dream location for a substantial celebration. Numerous special activities can be arranged, including kayaking and coasteering to help entertain your guests throughout their stay. Walton Castle in Somerset is definitely a classic medieval castle. Listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, Walton Castle was partially destroyed during the Civil Wars of the seventeenth century. Surrounded by stone walls complete with ramparts; the great stone keep stands tall in the centre of the castle. With its own private helicopter pad, it makes a lovely setting for a small, exclusive celebration. It even boasts its own private swimming pool. Among the potential activities on offer are archery, falconry and even sword fighting; whilst for visitors wanting a challenge, Walton Castle can even set up a murder mystery event, requiring participants to find their way out of a locked tower. Amberley Castle in West Sussex also dates back to medieval times. Surrounded by a 60 foot curtain wall; there are gun loops, a portcullis and a win tower gatehouse. Guests can step back in time; surrounded by suits of armour and intricate coats of arms. Landscaped gardens provide pretty vistas for wedding photographs.
In Yorkshire, the enchanting vistas surrounding Peckforton Castle will be familiar to anyone watching TV programmes like Dr Who, Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood. Dating back to the mid nineteenth century, Peckforton Castle is a palatial medieval style building. Although now a hotel and spa, it can be hired for exclusive use catering for groups of up to 165 guests. Follow in the footsteps of legendary lovers Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn - you can even sleep in the bedchamber that they slept in – by staying at Thornbury Castle, Gloucestershire. This beautiful Tudor castle boasts a grand hall perfect for balls, feasts and dances, along with wonderful places for those special photographs such as spiral stone steps and romantic gateways. Lavish Tudor style décor with wall hangings and four poster beds make this a castle of dreams.
32
Eastnor Castle is set amid the pretty Malvern Hills, and has its own lake and forest. Circular turrets mark each corner of the castle, with a square keep in the centre, with lots of arched windows bringing light into the beautiful state rooms. With just 12 bedrooms, this is a fairly compact castle, with extra accommodation available in the grounds in a variety of houses and cottages. Peaceful, tranquil and intensely beautiful, Eastnor makes a stunning wedding location; fit for a princess. Head north to Kinnetties Castle near Aberdeen. Set in 44 acres of stunning gardens and surrounded by pine woods, it offers breathtaking views of the Scottish landscape. High ceilings, chandeliers, ornate cornices and lavish furnishings make this a spectacular place to stay. Games rooms help to keep guests busy, whilst bridal parties can take advantage of the beautiful terrace, helping to create an exceptional wedding ceremony. Whichever castle you choose, don’t expect it to be available at a moment’s notice. These castles are much in demand, and are often fully booked months ahead. The wait, however, is definitely worth it; you will be able to enjoy something totally out of this world for your special celebration.

The best shopping anywhere in the world – it has to be Dubai!

By Angela Youngman
Rolling sand dunes stretching for miles, the blue waters of the Arabian Sea and the best shopping anywhere in the world – it has to be Dubai. Perfectly sited between the sea and the desert, Dubai has become the byword for shopping and entertainment. Within just a few square miles tourists can enjoy everything from souks to high end brand outlets, theme parks; a touch of culture plus sand and sea experiences. It is not surprising that it has become one of the most popular destinations for UK travellers seeking short breaks or layovers during long distance travel across the world. For shopaholics, this is definitely the place to go. You are positively spoilt for choice and can shop till you drop! There are over 100 shopping malls in Dubai, and that’s not counting the designer outlet villages, markets and traditional souks. This is where you can buy anything from designer brands to exquisite gold and silver jewelry. Visit during one of the shopping festivals and there are even more bargains to be had. The winter festival takes place between December and January and has been described as the biggest shopping extravaganza in the Middle East. Dubai Summer Surprises, on the other hand, takes place in between July and late August offering family friendly events and live entertainment as well as retail discounts, promotions and prizes.
It is not surprising that it has become one of the most popular destinations for UK travellers...
These are shopping malls designed to impress, and make you stay and shop with vast ranges of stores drawn from all quarters of the globe. Just consider the Dubai Mall which is the largest of all the malls. Described as more of a mini-city than a shopping centre, the Dubai Mall is top of the list for attracting most visitors to the area. It has over 1,300 stores and 200 restaurants. Some of the stores are extremely large – Level Shoes is said to be the largest shoe shop in the world! Then there are the delights of stores like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dhamani 1969, American Vintage, Montegrappa, Sephora, along with department stores like Bloomingdales and Galeries Layfayette. Not far away is Mall of the Emirates with 700 stores with brand names like Abercrombie & Fitch and Harvey Nichols whilst Dubai Festival Mall has 400 stores, including KateSpade, DKNY and New Look. City Centre Deira has over 370 brands including Paris Gallery, Massimo Dutti, Gap and Guess: Looking for jewellery? The Gold & Diamond Park at Al-Quaz sells nothing but jewellery and includes stores like Cara that allow shoppers to create bespoke items or replicate existing pieces. www.britishmuslim-magazine.com
35
Even the mall architecture is eye catching. The Ibn Battuta Mall has to be one of the spectacular as it is designed to have six themed areas each focusing on one of the places visited by the medieval Arab traveller, Ibn Battuta: His journey spanned 24 years and six lands: Tunisia, Egypt, Persia, India, China and Andalucia. There are giant dragon medallions and a coffered ceiling with royal motifs symbolizing happiness and prosperity within the Chinese section, together with a massive Chinese Junk. The India Court takes its influence from the Mughal period and has a stunning Elephant Clock. Every hour, the carved wooden figures, including dragons and phoenixes, come alive and move! Apart from the sheer scale of their shopping, what makes these malls really stand out is the sheer scale of their leisure facilities. You can truly stay all day in just one mall without stepping outside to shop, eat, watch films, visit theme parks or even go ice-skating! There are gaming centres, bio-domes, the world’s largest indoor ski slope, ten pin bowling and aquariums. The Dubai Mall even has a 155 million year old dinosaur skeleton on display. Over at the Mall of the Emirates, Magic Planet offers adrenaline pumping rides, arcade games, cutting edge video games and a gravity defying trampoline park. As night falls, crowds gather at the Dubai Festival City Mall. Dancing water fountains, dramatic sound waves and pillars of fire create an unforgettable visual spectacle. If you can drag yourself away from the shopping malls, there is plenty to discover. There are yet more theme parks, such as Motiongate – an immersive Hollywood inspired theme park, IMG Worlds of Adventure, Legoland, Aquaventure Waterpark, Ski Dubai and Bollywood Park: All operate all year round, so whatever the time of year you are guaranteed a fantastic experience. If you have a head for heights, the 160-storey skyscraper Burj Khalifa offers a
36
superb opportunity to experience high-rise views across the city from its observation deck. Fancy a trip out into the desert? Then prepare for sheer excitement. Experience the dunes at high speed, as your driver zooms around the sand dunes, teetering on the edge of what seems like a sheer drop before sliding down sandy slopes only to repeat the process a few minutes later. Admire the desert sunsets, and then relax with an Arabic buffet dinner in a traditional Bedouin camp. Alternatively try quad biking over the sandy landscape, or try a new sport – sandboarding (snowboarding on sand!). Watch camel racing or take part in cycling exploits such as the Cake Ride where you get rewarded with cake if you can complete the 50km loop! Want something a bit calmer? Then try a desert safari in a vintage Landrover to see native wildlife and Arabian Oryx. Step back in time with a stroll through the bustling souks, the age-old way of buying and selling aromatic spices, textiles, jewellery and perfumes. Alternatively, discover the beauties of the Historic district to find out what life was like before modern development took place. A maze of winding alleyways leads between the traditionally styled limestone buildings, many of which are topped with wind towers. Stop off at a teahouse for a cup of karak chai – a type of tea blended with milk and spices. Explore the Saruq Al Hadid museum containing items recovered from an ancient archeological site deep in the desert, or take a trip along the historic Dubai Creek waterway on a traditional wooden abra boat. Equally relaxing is a visit to a luxurious hammam, offering a variety of traditional spa therapies such as rose rituals, oriental scrubs and steam baths. Dubai is an experience not to be missed. With something for everyone, young and old, it is an Arabian jewel where you can truly shop, relax and play 24 hours a day!

Ramadan Mubarak
The holiest month in the Islamic calendar, which sees Muslims undertake a 30-day fast starts in May. When did Ramadan Start?
Although Ramadan is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, its date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year. This year in the UK, Ramadan begins on the 5th May and finishes on Tuesday 4 June. Ramadan marks the month when Allah revealed the Qur’an to prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam – a verse in the Qur’an prescribes it for all mature and healthy Muslims. Muslims fast as an act of worship, a chance to get closer to Allah and a way to become more compassionate to those in need. The term ‘Ramada’ comes from the Arabic word ramida or arramad which means scorching hear or dryness, as ‘’it normally falls in a hot time of the year’’. Fasting is the most well-known and important part of the month. Practicing Muslims are not allowed to eat between sunrise and sunset to help teach ‘self discipline, self-restraint and generosity’’. It’s common to have one meal, the suhoor, just before sunrise and another known as the iftar directly after sunset. Non-Muslims, young children, the sick, people with mental health illnesses, travellers, the elderly and women who are menstruating, pregnant, breast feeding or have recently given birth do not have to fast. The government’s advisory, conciliation and arbitration service has a page for helping employers support Muslim employees during Ramadan, and warns that ‘Fasting may affect people in different ways’’.
Tips for fasting
Stay healthy this year! Eat at least two meals a day – the suhoor and iftar and pack them with complex carbohydrates such as wheat, oats, lentils and basmati rice that release energy slowly. High-fat and high-sugar foods are not recommended and fasters should instead eat baked samosas, boiled www.britishmuslim-magazine.com
dumplings, grilled meat and milk based puddings.
The Night of Power?
On the 27th day of Ramada, Muslims mark Lailat Al Qadr – the ‘Night of Power’. This is Islam’s holiest night and commemorates the day the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It involved spending the night praying, studying and reciting the holy text. The exact day of Lailat al Qadr was never actually specified by he Prophet (pbuh) and some Muslims choose to commemorate all the last ten days of Ramadan as if they were Lailat Al Qadr.
Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam
Marking the end of Ramadan
To make the end of fasting, Muslim celebrate the Eid ul-Fitr festival, beginning with early morning prayers and then a day of feasting with friends and family. Many Muslims wear their best and new clothes to celebrate eating their first daylight meal in a month and give thanks to Allah for giving them strength and self control. They exchange gifts and decorate their homes for celebrations. As well as fasting, Muslims are also asked to give away 2.5% of their wealth during the 30-day festival as part of Zakat.

The 360 Muslim Lifestyle App Has Arrived! I had the pleasure of catching up with one of the three cofounders of the very first Muslim lifestyle app, Salam Planet, which is to hit the UK market today. I caught up with Omair Khan, just before he got on his plane to Pakistan. Launched in 2017 in Denmark and supported by a Danish private equity backed company - Salam Planet app is going Global! After receiving a $1M seed investment from Copenhagen based Promentum Equity Partners, the new Muslim lifestyle app is ready to launch in key markets, such as the UK - which has seen a growing demand for Muslim based products, the USA, Pakistan and other Muslim majority/minority countries. ‘As you know, there is a growing demand from Muslim audiences to find one place for all their needs, from Halal food to fashion, events information to entertainment options etc. In the bid to help the end user have an easy journey through the app, we have made it user friendly and sectioned areas for quick use, such as Food & Drink, Fashion & Shopping vs Spirituality, Books and Events, to name a few.’’ Omair compares the event listing of the app to Eventbrite, where you can promote local Muslim events through the app, rather than having to scroll through Facebook and other social networks to find out about them. Salam Tickets, which is already live on the app, has many events to choose from, where www.britishmuslim-magazine.com
as Salam Deals offers discounts in places from restaurants to fashion wear outlets. ‘’We currently have 150,000 downloads and it’s a completely free app to download. We are aiming to reach a target of 1M downloads by 2020.’’ Said Khan. Salam Planet app will be able to find restaurants in whatever country/location you are in, so if you are in the UK, Pakistan, USA, Amsterdam or even Malta, your geo location will allow the app to find what is local to you at the time. It’s certainly a disruptor in the current market place and Omair’s teams in Denmark and Pakistan are working to develop the app over the next few years. Promentum Equity Partners strongly believe that the Muslim lifestyle industry is massive and growing fast, hence it’s a promising investment case,’’ added Partner Irfan Goandal. The PE firm invests in high potential technology companies worldwide. Salam Planet will be offering a chat service as well as the Islamic offering of prayer times, qibla finder and masjid locator, depending on what country you are in. Businesses will eventually have the opportunity to benefit from statistics and data gathered by Salam Planet from people visiting their product pages.

Microblading is one of the fastest growing trends in the beauty industry What is it? Is it a cosmetic tattoo? Suman: It is a semi-permanent treatment in which featherlight strokes are made into the epidermis layer of the skin. These small strokes create a new, more defined brow, custom made for a person’s face, with the colour that matches their eyebrows. Microblading enhances an existing brow shape, or can create a completely new shape. It is also perfect for filling gaps without the use of makeup.
What is the process and how long does it take?
Suman: A consultation and skin test is carried out prior to the appointment. On the day a client is with us for approximately two hours. The brows are thoroughly numbed with an EMLA cream over the first hour and the treatment is carried out during the second hour. Then 6-10 weeks later a retouch Microblading is scheduled to perfect the brows.
The area is thoroughly numbed beforehand so the process shouldn’t be too painful; however this differs from client to client. It is normal to have some mild discomfort.
Why get the procedure done?
Microblading is revolutionary for achieving perfect brows that enhance facial features. The end result is soft, flawless and naturally beautiful eyebrows with a shape that is bespoke to each face. It also requires little to be done to them afterwards, as there is no need to fill them in or have them constantly tinted.
What does one need to do as any aftercare?
How long does it last?
After the retouch session, and depending on how oily or dry the skin is, the treatment can last from 12 to 18 months.
You need to avoid direct contact with hot water, exercise or going to the gym for at least 10 days. Brows can be cleansed once or twice a day with an antibacterial soap such as Dial, Cetaphil or Neutrogena, but you must avoid unnecessary water contact and lengthy hot showers. A light coating of coconut oil will soothe the brow area as the skin starts to scab.
Do you have to be a certain age to get it done?
How much does it cost?
A client must be 18 years of age to have Microblading done.
Are there any side effects?
A skin test is vital prior to the treatment, as well as filling out an extensive consultation form to identify any allergies. After the microblading procedure, and for at least one week afterwards, a person’s eyebrows might appear to be darker. They may also feel sharper due to scabbing and healing. This mild discomfort is normal as your skin heals and adjusts.
48
Does it hurt?
The Microblading with Suman costs £600 and with our other artists it is £450. Included in the price is the 6 -10 weeks retouch session.

Porto City Guide
Situated on the estuary of the river Douro in northern Portugal, Porto's western suburbs extend to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The city is around 420km from Madrid. By Natasha Syed
Porto is… • • • • •
The second largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon. A city with a long history; founded over 2,000 years ago, its historic centre was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Home to around 215,000 citizens, though the metropolitan area has a population of 1.7 million. A port city which is one of western Europe's most popular tourist destinations. Twinned with Shanghai, Bordeaux, Macau, Luanda, Nagasaki and Vigo, among others.
Bike: Bicycles can be hired easily from a number of locations in the city centre. There are some great cycle paths along the Douro, from Ribeira to Foz, or from Vila Nova de Gaia to Afurada and beyond.
What to see
Walk: The centre of Porto is easy to navigate by foot.
For culture: The 76m-tall Clérigos Tower is the most important feature of the Porto skyline; opened in 1763, it was conceived by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, and offers a brilliant panorama of the historic centre – provided you can face the steps.
Taxi: If a taxi has a green light, it can be hailed easily enough, and there are taxi ranks at some of the bigger hubs to make matters easier. All licensed cabs must have a visible meter to show charges, with rates calculated by time and distance travelled.
For atmosphere: Ribeira is the place to go. A maze of medieval alleys that zigzag up and down to the Douro river, it offers access to the Ponte de Dom Luís I and the portwine lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Moving Around
52
Public transport: The metro system is the most popular way to get around, but buses also serve the city and go all the way out to the furthest suburbs.
For fresh air: Designed in the 19th century, the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal (Crystal Palace) are close to the city centre, and offer eight hectares of luxurious greenery with astonishing views over the river.
Eating and drinking Well unfortunately the world famous Port wine is not halal at the banks of Douro, but there is plenty of halal friendly food and drink to choose from. Porto is a great place to learn to eat the Portuguese way; two city favourites are Tripas à Moda do Porto (Porto-style tripe) and Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá, a casserole of salted cod, potatoes, eggs, olives and onion which is eaten across the country.
Football in Porto Founded on 28 September 1893, Porto are one of Portugal's 'Big Three' alongside Lisbon rivals Benfica and Sporting CP; all three sides have figured in every Liga campaign since www.britishmuslim-magazine.com
its establishment in 1934. Porto have won 28 league titles and are the most decorated Portuguese club internationally, having won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League in 1987 and 2004, as well as the UEFA Cup/Europa League in 2003 and 2011. Porto's local rivals Boavista were founded on 1 August 1903 and are the most decorated Portuguese club outside the 'Big Three'. Their 2000/01 success meant they joined Belenenses as the only non-'Big Three' outfit to have won the Liga.

Interview
Breaking barriers has never been easy Particularly for Muslim women
We caught up with Ayesha Tariq, host at Islam Channel to find out how she’s breaking the norm.
How did you secure your position as a TV presenter with Islam Channel, did you face any cultural or community challenges?
Since being a teenager, I’ve always wanted to be a presenter. So when I started practising Islam at university, my ideal scenario was to bring both passions together - Islam and presenting. When I graduated from university, I attended a careers fair and met a recruitment consultant. She later told me Islam Channel were looking for presenters for a new women’s lifestyle show. I applied and, after a few rounds of auditions, finally secured my spot as a co-presenter on the show that I love dearly, ‘City Sisters’, back in 2007. Personally I didn’t have many challenges because I always had support from my family and friends. But when City
54
Sisters ads came on Islam Channel, we received quite a few negative comments; strange, bearing in mind that the first episode had not aired at this point. The one comment that still sticks out in my mind the most is, when we were called ‘Page 3 Girls’ (in reference to content in the infamous British newspaper). Fortunately, and I say Alhamdulillah, City Sisters became a landmark show because we spoke about issues that were beyond merely discussing the oppression of Muslim women; we spoke about marriage, adoption, interracial marriages, super-women, hijab trials, hijama and so forth. All these topics were real and daily matters which every woman could relate to. We had viewers from all over the world contacting us saying how much they loved the show and felt that they could participate in the chit-chats that we had. A lot has changed since 2007, but I truly believe City Sisters set the tone for Muslim women in the West to speak up and talk about issues that mattered.
person, I’m much less star-struck and more in awe of their journeys; how they got to where they are right now. They’re just very nice people, Mash’Allah! That’s why it’s so important for ‘Coffee with Ayesha’ to be about the person behind the personality and to show my audience a side of the guests which they don’t speak about too often. To have a show named after me on Islam Channel is an absolute honour and it’s the biggest highlight and inspiration all rolled into one.
What taboo subjects have you covered on Islam Channel and what difficulties, if any, did you face thereafter?
You are well known for your show “Coffee with Ayesha” on Islam Channel - what have been the highlights and inspirations of your career so far?
City Sisters will always be the show that gave me the platform to make my dream come true as a presenter on TV. I walked away taking with me beautiful friendships and experiences that helped create the foundation of my career. Another highlight has to be presenting live television such as ‘Living the Life’ and ‘Ramadan with Islam Channel’. There’s something about live TV that pumps my adrenaline making me totally ready for any ‘technical difficulties’, nervous guests or even the phone lines not working and repeatedly saying ‘Assalaamu Alaikum’ to a caller! On ‘Coffee with Ayesha’, Alhamdulillah, I have sat with some of the most genuine and inspiring well-known individuals, such as Zain Bhika, Ahmed Bukhatir, the first Mayor of London - Ken Livingstone, Lauren Booth as well as many others. I’ve noticed that after interviewing each www.britishmuslim-magazine.com
Taboo subjects have changed over the past decade or so. On City Sisters we talked about interracial marriages, romance in Islam, menstruation and women in arts, which were particularly hot topics at that time, and we addressed these mainly from Islamic teachings. We still, however, received emails saying we shouldn’t be talking about such matters and that it was shameful for women to be speaking about these topics so publicly. We knew the importance of women talking about women’s issues, rather than men talking on our behalf. And that’s how we attracted a following, creating a band of sisters who were in it together. For future shows, I want to talk more about issues that affect our community, and if that means having a chat about taboo subject like sex, relationships, domestic violence etc. then let’s have those discussions with experts and specialists in these fields.
What difference do you think your show has made to the British public; how has it helped your non-Muslim viewers?
We’re living in an age where celebrities and well-known faces are more in the spotlight through social media, but I still believe that the public know very little about them. I therefore wanted Coffee with Ayesha solely featuring wellknown personalities, asking them personal questions that
55
maybe they would not address on their own platforms. Side note: I do ask all my guests beforehand if there are any topics that they do not wish to talk about, and fortunately most have said we can talk about anything! My guests on the show, so far, come from all over the world - South Africa, America, UAE and from British multi-cultural backgrounds; we spend half an hour seeing a different side of them. Any viewer, Muslim or non-Muslim, will appreciate how raw the interview is with the guest; we often learn how a tragedy or a particular moment steered their life onto the path of fame.
What positive supportive comments and feedback have you received from the Asian community since you started working as a presenter at Islam Channel?
Initially I had positive comments from all communities expressing how happy they were to see a hijabi woman presenting on TV, but now I also have positive comments about the way I present and the content which is produced. I even have viewers coming up to me telling me about their own very personal and private issues; this still surprises me! But Alhamdulillah, I’m so fortunate to be in a position to hear what people have to say, and this raises my awareness of various matters that can help for future shows.
You have interviewed many famous personalities and guests on Islam Channel, what do you have in store for your viewers in 2019? All will be revealed! What I definitely can say is that I will be interviewing not only well-known Muslim figures but also non-Muslims too, in’sha’Allah.
Can you share a greatest moment on Islam Channel?
Hands down, interviewing Ken Livingstone was the absolute key moment for me. We spoke for nearly an hour about his life before we filmed Coffee with Ayesha; that could have been an interview in itself ! Also when my dad was one of the callers on a live show which I was a guest on, the presenter asked him some questions and the more he spoke, the more I began to realise that it was my dad!
Can you tell us about your best experiences with Islam Channel? I’ve had a few, but one of them was on City Sisters, where I travelled with my co-presenter. We filmed in Beijing, trekking the Great Wall of China and visited beautiful
56
Mosques influenced by Chinese and Arab architecture We also toured across Jordan following historical routes and visited places like Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and Islamic sites. I was very much out of my comfort zone as a presenter in completely new and challenging environments, but the experience was an added bonus, enhancing my skill-set. We filmed in those two destinations over ten years ago but, to this day, people come up to me to talk about those particular trips: I feel honoured to say that I was part of that.
What advice would you give other Muslim women who wish to become presenters like you?
Be yourself ! Never act as anyone other than yourself; it’s easier and less tiring. Have a few presenters you like to watch, see what their presenting skills are like. Practice, Practice, Practice. 90% of the effort goes into rehearsing and working on your presentation skills, 10% is actually filming it. Interview family and friends about anything and record yourself. Watch it back and see where you can improve. Participate as part of an audience for a few live TV shows; see first-hand the experience of being on set and watch the amount of work each crew member does to make an episode. It really is team work and not just a solo act. Do some work experience with a production company and/or get yourself a mentor who can also guide you. Don’t be put off by criticism and learn from your mistakes. The best part of being a presenter is to make sure you enjoy what you are doing!
Please plug in the charity and other work you are focusing on, away from Islam Channel.
This past year has been exciting, besides the launch of ‘Coffee with Ayesha’, I’ve set up a charity called All Ways Network (AWN). We empower and support small charities working with and for the Muslim community living in the UK. We value the importance of grassroots charities making a vital impact within their local communities. AWN hosts seminars, workshops and networking events solely to help small charities to work more effectively and efficiently. We focus on areas such as fundraising, governance, volunteering, marketing, social media and lots more… The aim is also to bring small Muslim and non-Muslim non-profit organisations working with Muslim communities across the UK to network and collaborate, building bridges and cohesion.
Our website is www.allwaysnetwork.org.uk. We’re also on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Translating art into fashion through her psychological expertise Words: Rabi’ah.M
“Unique in her art sense, thanks to her background in psychology, Shereen Al Othaina is a renowned Kuwaiti fashion designer: Her participation at the ‘Stories from Arabia’ event was a memorable experience. She talks about her eagerness to mix colours and textures, and the representation of modern woman through fashion.” The role of fashion events has been significant in providing fashion designers with a platform, especially if they be Arab fashion designers who showcased their work at this year’s ‘The Stories from Arabia’ (officially a part of the London Fashion Week). One such designer who showcased her majestic and stunning collection is Kuwaiti designer Shereen Al Othaina. She is a multi-talented individual; whether it is her skill as a fashion designer or canvassing for perfection as an image consultant. She is a certified specialist in personality types and analysis; she completed a course in psychology for analysing appearance. At the heart of her brand is the building of bridges across cultures, where East and West meet; turning dreams into a reality, as well as motivating women to modernise their traditional outfits and turn to the luxurious. “I want to
58
portray women in a modern style which preserves their femininity and enables me to achieve luxury and originality within a fashion context.” Her collection depicts a regal touch bearing a similarity to the Harem of Sultan - Turkish drama. As she describes: “The uniqueness of this collection is deeply rooted in the kind of materials, fabrics, and patterns I have used.” Al Othaina’s aspiration, as she explains, is for women to be strong and to be themselves, following their dreams and passions. She loves materials, fabrics and colours and has the desire to combine different textures; as she describes them “crazy colours”. She translates anything related to art into a design, which demonstrates the depth of her understanding and creativity; the extent to which she wants to be perceived as original. Perhaps her study of psychology in colours has profoundly influenced her in carefully picking and mixing the colour combinations. Participating in the London Fashion Week was an important achievement for Al Othaina, as she explains: “Every designer in this world would be ecstatic to participate in such an event that takes place in the fashion capital.”

Top 5 travel photography tips
Salima is a photographer whose collodion photography challenges people’s perceptions of cultural value, history, time and place. She has lived in Japan for twelve years and continues to feature internationally in publications such as the New York Times and The Times. How can we create travel photography to cherish when the journey is over? Rather than taking snapshots of a moment, a good image changes our way of seeing the world long after we have returned home.
Eat where the locals eat; knock on a stranger’s door and welcome yourself into their world. Interact with the locals where possible; ask them to give you advice about hidden gems.
4 Experiment
The secret to taking a great travel photo begins at home. Before travelling, read as much as possible about where you are going, to get ideas about the kind of photo opportunities you will have. Google the place you are travelling to and see what kind of images others have captured, then think about how you can approach things differently.
Some of the best photographic opportunities come to us from the corners of our eyes, so explore the edges of your peripheral vision to see moments jump out. Shoot away, imagine yourself as a painter, sketching sheet after sheet of drawings – digital photography gives us the luxury of snapping a lot, honing and deleting later. First shoot wide and then explore the finer detail. Go high and go low, viewing subjects and situations through the lens; through a child’s eyes.

Fitness Spotlight:
A new wave of fitness The fitness industry loves to tout the ancillary benefits of exercise. We know not everyone wants to pump themselves up to gargantuan proportions or devote their every waking moment toward achieving a single-digit body-fat percentage. But everyone wants to feel good, and there are plenty of studies showing that exercise is a valuable tool in managing depression, anxiety and, in particular, stress. We catch up with Ridhwaan Zina (30) from Hackney, who has launched RZ fitness & wellbeing, to see how he’s helping people get into the right mind-set.
How did RZ Fitness & Wellbeing come about?
In September 2013 I had an epileptic seizure, fell on a slab of concrete whilst on duty for the British Transport Police and was rushed into ICU by air! I had always wanted to make a difference to the lives of people but didn’t realise how much: At this point in my life I was unable to put a pen to paper and tears would roll down my face. I had the words but couldn’t formulate a credible sentence, even though those closest to me were standing beside me, in the hope that I would pull through. As I lay in hospital with internal bleeding from the brain, what doctors refer to as a frontal lobe haemorrhage, I envisioned a dream, but was unsure if I would actually see it through to the end. It seemed pointless, there were so many ifs and buts; I just felt helpless. Though I did know that with faith and belief, the very intention would take me far, I had a feeling of acceptance in my heart and mind: I lay down to rest feeling a level of reassurance that good things were to come. I suffer from epilepsy and require a strong dose of medication and the side effects are pretty tough. So I decided to pursue a career in personal training after realising that some of the side effects of my medication were making me feel very fatigued. On top of that, there were splitting migraines, which were almost unbearable. Thus, in order to feel rejuvenated and to supplement my medication, I opted to eat well, sleep well and started to train. In other words I changed my ways. I feel hundred times better after a workout, and since I started I have been seizure free: for five years! Alhumdulilah (Thanks to Allah the All-Mighty).
What was your vision?
My vision was to inspire; and allow others with neurological conditions like myself to feel a sense of belief that their lives could have a breath of fresh air, even in the darkest of times, should they decide to partake in physical activity and endorse a positive, healthy lifestyle.

Top 5/10 tips on having the right mindset? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Hard work Dedication Consistency Belief Respect
is a goal for all of us, right? The topic of wellbeing is something, which keeps me intrigued. Looking after your mental wellbeing is vital, but it’s an easily overlooked aspect of our everyday lives. We live in a world where we rush from A to B and it’s Go, Go, Go 24/7. People are busy, distracted and generally have a lot going on, managing both their work and their social calendars. Smart phones, push email and social media all create an environment where we feel we must be online. With mental health issues at the forefront of reasons for absence from work, it is clearly something we should be looking to improve. A few personal tips (taken from my own experiences) that will help you to look after your mental wellbeing and can make a big difference to your mind, body, and soul:1. Appreciate the present - We live in an age of distraction and so often get trapped in thoughts of the future or the past that we forget to experience, let alone enjoy, what’s happening right now. 2. Start your day with Happy - Monday to Friday can often feel like you are on autopilot. Go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed and repeat. Start off your day by engaging in a positive activity that you enjoy. You’ll then be in a positive state of mind for the day ahead. 3. Never let pride prevent you from seeking help Don’t be afraid to ask for help from others, rather than running yourself into the ground. I can’t think of anyone who has gone through life never having asked for help. 4. Learn something new - It can increase your confidence and can also be a lot of fun. Take a cookery class or brush up on your photography skills. There are tons of opportunities, and any investment in your passion will be worthwhile. 5. Adopt a better diet - Eating well is key to overall health. Incorporate fruit and vegetables in your diet more often, along with brain-boosting foods like Beetroot, Blueberries, Flaxseed, Salmon and Avocado. Talking about Female Empowerment Interview by Tahira Khan
The term ‘Female Empowerment’ has recently been a hot topic in the news, on social media and at the dinner table. Tahira Khan had the opportunity to talk about the uprising of female empowerment and oppression in the digital age, with confidence coach Mikaela Johnson to find out more.
What is the concept behind She Almighty?
This is about women being self-empowered in order to be the best version of themselves and to create careers and lives that they love with a positive effect. We provide life, career and business coaching services and our mission is to create a community of empowered, aspirational and inspirational women.
How did the journey begin, what led you to launch She Almighty?
I was ambitious and driven throughout my teens and twenties but I didn’t ever have a career path carved out. I studied social sciences and politics at university and I loved it, I thought the world was my oyster when I graduated, but the truth was that I still had no idea what I wanted to do. I moved back home from Birmingham to Aberystwyth in Wales for a while, until I decided to pack my bags to go travelling by myself around South East Asia, with a one-way ticket to Australia. I had some amazing experiences, met some wonderful people and ended up settling in Melbourne for 3 years, where I had some great jobs, including becoming owner-partner of a sales and marketing company, still in my early twenties. I was earning good money and had a pretty nice lifestyle, but I still hadn’t found that sense of purpose or fulfilment, which I yearned for. In February 2013 I moved back to the UK, and London was where I wanted to be. But one year in I really wasn’t happy in my job, my relationship or my living situation – I felt lost, miserable, frustrated and a far cry from being the best version of myself. I knew that I had to make some changes, and that’s when I discovered coaching. I instantly bought into the coaching process and soon after I decided to study on a diploma in Personal Performance Coaching. Fast forward a few years, I finally plucked up the courage to set up my own coaching business in 2016 and before I turned 30 ‘She Almighty’ was born. I now enable women to reconnect with themselves, figure out what’s really important to them, what their dream careers and lives look like, and then help them to achieve them.
What’s your definition of female empowerment?
For me female empowerment means women receiving equal opportunity and treatment at home, in the community, at work, in society and in the wider world. Female empowerment is women thriving, self-empowering, contributing and accomplishing their worth, and being raised up and championed by men and women alike. www.britishmuslim-magazine.com
What are your thoughts on the stereotypical image of Muslim women being oppressed?
Well everyone has a choice in life. To believe that Muslim women are oppressed, is a matter of choice, the fact that if it’s true or not is a different story. I personally have met some strong Muslim women during my life, and have a few Muslim clients too. It’s their personal choice and freedom if they want to do what feels right for them, but there are other types of oppression that go unnoticed. Real oppression comes in many forms that we need to address, not just what is injected into us as a society, and nowadays I feel that we need to question everything intelligently.
Do you think there’s still gender discrimination in the workplace? Yes definitely, unfortunately I hear stories from my clients far too often. There has been plenty of media attention recently including the Time’s Up and #metoo movement which has highlighted the manifestation and abuse of power not only in that industry, but across other sectors too. There is also the reporting of, and highlighting the gender pay gap which has begun this year - companies with 250 plus employees have to publish their gender pay gap and show that they are doing something about it. Whilst this is a positive step forward I believe there’s still a long way to go and that more could be done, starting with education and gender role stereotyping. What does Ramadan mean to you?
Over 109k+ Followers
It's about self reflecting and tolerance and self discipline; helping those who are less fortunate than us; being mindful of people's feelings; being humble and kind; perfecting your relationship with God, feeling closer to God. Ramadan is a joyous month of spiritual growth and late night family meals.
How do you practice it?
Obvious and most apparent is by fasting which is exclusively between you and God, and for God only. It is also about practicing patience and self tolerance. What spiritual benefits are you trying to achieve through the holy month? Getting closer to God: Nourishment for your soul: Detox for the body. Not forgetting who your sustainer and creator is. Praying the Quran abundantly as much as you can; during this time the Quran was revealed to our Prophet Muhammad.
Do you struggle during fasting? How do you overcome it? What challenges do you face?
Your routine changes, so for the first few days it takes time to adapt and get used to. You will feel tired as you have to wake up early in themorning for Sahoor, making sure having a filling, healthy breakfast: Sometimes it’s hard to eat a lot at that time; I try, at least, to have some dates, some milk and some water.
66
My day is busy so most of the time I am on the go, especially with sorting out all of the kids stuff. I keep myself busy so that the day does go quickly. The hunger side of things is fine, I wish I could keep that will power even after Ramadan, ha ha! Sometimes it does get tiring, so it is important that during the daytime, if you can, to have a short nap in order to recharge yourself. Having that balance from day to day does help.
What do you learn about yourself during this time? To keep patience with my family; tolerance; to self discipline myself, refraining from food, whereas normally I would be eating all through the day.
What's your favourite food to eat when opening your fast?
Its Sunnah to break our fast with Dates and water, but we all love a selection of fry ups likes samosas, spring Rolls and pastries. We have to have Falooda too, it's very refreshing.
How do you focus on your spiritual journey?
We are motivated by praying, listening to the night prayer, secluding ourselves in prayer, especially during iftar time, we will be rewarded in this world and in the hearafter. There is also the knowledge that we will celebrate at the end of the fasting month with the celebration of Eid~ul~fitr.

Wonder Woman The real wonder of a woman is in the fact she stands against oppression & battles for her independence & rights regardless of the systems that deny her. Look around, everywhere the wonder of a woman is impossible not to see... There ain't no real wonder woman on your film screens, clothed in fancy-dress by Hollywood men & supporting the illegal occupation of lands that have been stolen & a Zionist army of murderous cowards. 24 hours in
Before you arrive
Vancouver frequently tops most liveable city lists – and it’s easy to see why. A Liberal, multicultural and friendly place to visit: Where else can you ski and surf in the same 24 hours? The Pacific borders one side, mountains soar on the other and creeks and inlets cut right through it. The City takes its name from British naval officer George Vancouver, who explored here in the late 18th century, but it was saloon owner Jack ‘Gassy’ Deighton who really founded the city.
Travel highlights
An Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is required by all visa-free foreign nationals prior to arrival. It costs around £4 and is valid for up to 5 years; apply at Canada.ca. Direct flights to Vancouver take around 9½ hours and returns with Air Canada cost around £554 (aircanada.com).
72
Getting around
The SkyTrain Canada line links the airport to City Centre station; trains run from 5am to 1am (costing about £5.50 for one way) and take around 20 minutes (trainslink.ca); taxis are readily available to the city centre and cost around 21 – 25 pounds.
Stay Tip Top - The Fairmont Pacific Rim is a prime location, which sits on the harbour looking out at the north Shore Mountains. Mid Range – The Metropolitan Hotel, based downtown, is only a two-minute walk from the City Centre. On a budget – Sylvia Hotel is a hidden gem and a comfortable place to stay.

Creative Wedding Ideas Halal Hen Do’s – Is this integration of the eastern and western trends eventually going to supersede the traditional henna ceremonies? Our Features Writer explores further…..
During the past decade we have seen a huge demand for the halal industry, in travel; in food; in culture, so that now this booming trend is challenging our creative spirits. There has been a slow transition from the original henna ceremony, preparing the bride for her wedding day in a somewhat smaller, fun- filled celebration, which could be called a western henna ceremony. Is the ritual of dancing round with henna plates eventually going to fade out, or is the bridal shower an addition taken from western culture and here to stay, alongside the traditional mehndi ceremonies? It is exciting to witness this quirky innovation, although a bit scary as we may lose out on the ancient traditional rituals altogether in the future. Along with the traditional generation of our grandmothers and aunties fading out, there is the upcoming millennial generation taking charge, with their Pintrest inspired ideas. This part of Muslim wedding culture is definitely evolving very fast. There is change happening for sure; is this for better or for worse? Moving on to the halal hen do: What does it basically consist of? When you think of a hen do, usually it’s a load of girls on a night out with lots of penis shaped novelties, heading off to a strip club; okay shall we explain the Muslim version then? Basically it’s a girl’s hen party without the sexual explicitness and alcohol, a bit more conservative, and acceptable according to the Muslim culture, but it has to FUN, yes halal fun. Usually the organiser creates a large what’s app group, including everyone except the bride, getting all the favours and talents she can from friends and family, usually the female sisters and cousins. A small budget and a trip down to the nearest pound shop just to create a mini personalised ceremony for the bride. The theme, well, apparently that is up to you but one we have recently seen is the Alice in Wonderland theme. I have personally created a Chronicles of Narnia winter wonderland theme for my own wedding, but in my head I wanted to be the white witch arriving in my sleigh. Technically I couldn’t arrive to my wedding in a sleigh, that would shock everyone, I would have loved to see their reaction
76
– lol – but, unfortunately, I had to opt for the sensible option of a horse and carriage, arriving as Cinderella (sad face), I did, though, get the white horses!! Often it can happen at a surprise venue, hotel or, if you have the time and budget, even abroad; a retreat maybe? Even though getting everyone together can be somewhat of an organisational nightmare; in fact impossible based on my experience. Okay, so where’s the meaning here? Holy water (Zam Zam) and honey are considered sacred so these are created in special jars, usually customised with an Islamic message, either handed out or left on the table as favours. Not to forget the cake, there has to be a cake, who makes it? Usually someone in the family who’s a fan of baking and decorating cakes, even teenage girls get to try out their cup-cake skills and the day is captured through endless Snap-chat and Insta stories.
Basically it’s a girl’s hen party without the sexual explicitness and alcohol.... The bride usually dresses how she wants. Casual silk PJ’s, Glam Queen, Bond Girl. Be whoever you want to be, ‘it may be your last chance’ is usually the cheeky message behind this. Okay so can you dress up as the red sexy devil then? (Coughcough, eyes rolling up). Just shut up and sit back down, the devil is definitely not allowed. This is Muslim Bridal Shower. So what lies ahead? A ‘halal stag do’ maybe? It’s all about creativity, imagination and expression, we all have it in us and a wedding is usually a great time to showcase these skillsets, but underneath it all it’s a gesture of expression and a loving bon-voyage to the bride to be. Women in Leadership by Aisha Minhas The climb to the top can be tough going: That goes for anyone who has high aspirations to achieve a high-flying career, but as women there are many hurdles that can make the journey upward, towards positions of power and influence, quite challenging. This can be due to self-doubt, racing to climb to the top or not having the right skills and qualifications to do the job. Let me ask you a question, how often do we hear that women are too bossy; girls are often told, from a young age, that ‘they are so bossy’; but isn’t that merely being assertive and confident? As women in leadership, what sets us aside from the rest is that we are good in emotional intelligence, and if you reflect, we are already leading in our lives, whether this is in our personal lives with family; studying; relationships or working in whatever role you have!
Leadership comes in so many forms, such as: • • • •

Autocratic Leadership Transformational Leadership Hands-On, Participant Leadership Transactional Leadership
If you are thinking of moving into a leadership role, then here are my three top tips to get you started:
1. Personal Development
Taking your career to the next level comes with personal development. There are many courses available, be they online, in colleges or even a university degree (if you really want to specialise). There is no stopping what you can learn! ‘knowledge is key’
2. Mentor
If there is a senior leader or someone whoinspires you, then ask to be mentored. This is an effective way of learning from someone who has been on your journey and can guide you.
3. Goals
Setting yourself smaller goals with timelines enables an easier way to achieve your ambition and acquire the skills and knowledge required. Follow Aisha on Instagram : Aish_Minhas Twitter : @Aish_Minhas

A Non-Alcoholic night affair Move over Shisha Lounges, Non-Alcoholic bars have been creeping around the Friday evening socialising trend.
Here is a selection of a few of the trendiest handpicked mocktail’s in the swankiest of places that London has ever seen.
Get Fruity with Sling at Bar Three Great: If you like it Fruity This non-alcoholic cocktail brings a fusion of the best of apple cordials, blended together with seedlip, Pineapple, Raspberry and Soda.
Something Tiki and Tropical at Sexy Fish Great: If you like it tropical Maybe a substitute for rum, this blend of orange, yuzu, toasted coconut syrup and pineapple; alcohol-free Tonka beans really capture the charm of the Caribbean, not to mention the exquisite mermaid glass this beauty is served in, topped with a fish-tailed biscuit spread with Malaysian coconut jam - which is certainly a feature worth the money.
80
Zingy at Nopi Great: If you like a touch of spice Nice and spicy is the theme when it comes to this restaurant’s food: The same can certainly be said of their mocktail list. Nopi’s cocktails take colour and flavour to the extreme, each one zinging with lip-smackingly bold ingredients like passionfruit, rhubarb, coconut, lime and ginger.
Smokey Old Fashioned at Dishoom
Hops at Waeska
Great: If you like it Dry and Gentlemanly
Great: If you like it sweet and feminine
One of my favourite places; this masculine and indulgent number recreates a taste of whiskey by smoking brown sugar syrup with hickory wood, with a touch of ginger to add just a subtle tingle. By Tahira Khan - Senior Features Writer
This is an alcohol free feminine dream. Flowery blends add a bitter edge to a pink bubbling elixir. Mixed with Rhubarb, sweet vanilla and a touch of grapefruit tonic top, it’s a perfect summer breeze, ideal for an evening with the ladies.

Mental health
Emotional, psychological, and social well-being Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act. With increasing pressure from societal norms and current culture it’s estimated that anxiety, depression, stress and other mental health problems are on the rise. With the fashionable culture of organic alternatives, from food to yoga, it can be seen that the population are looking at alternatives to add to traditional medication in order to handle these trends. One such problem is the increase of unhappiness in schools where the younger generation are having mental health issues, which can lead to self-harm, depression and even suicide. Shabbir Mellick is a pharmacist, author and mindfulness coach and has a keen interest in mental health. As a pharmacist he advices the public about medicine and health issues such as depression, addiction etc. He has undertaken the task of putting some of the methods that he has learnt into enjoyable books and journals in order to help tackle mental health. Over the past year he has been working with charities such as Penny Appeal (pennyappeal.org) and Mind (mind.org.uk) to raise awareness and to help tackle mental health issues. Along with this he has been delivering talks in schools and the public sector, as a volunteer, to teach children how gratitude and mindfulness can empower them and allow them to flourish. The mindfulness talks in schools range from positive psychology, gratitude, food and mood, mindfulness, self-harm, body image and ways to deal with anxiety, stress and depression. Research suggests that centralising experiences through writing in a gratitude journal is spiritually therapeutic, reduces stress, increases happiness, and improves selfesteem. Recording and transcribing our thoughts grants us an intimate insight into ourselves and allows us to translate appreciation from our thoughts to reality. To cultivate this technique Shabbir has designed self-help
82
books, one of which, titled the Gratitude Journal, is an activity book created specifically to help you to live more gratefully in your daily life. In this book you will find a mixture of inspirational quotes and writing prompts that can be used to enhance and increase your thankfulness every day. Shabbir and his gratitude journal have been awarded pharmacy awards for the positive work that he is doing in the community, schools and the charity sector. The awards range from Boots best of the best area community award, to being shortlisted at the Chemist and Druggist pharmacy awards. The Gratitude journal is being used in pharmacies, bookstores, schools and counselling sessions as a progression tool to tackle the mental health crisis we are facing. Shabbir has set up Fitrah Designs, which is trying to aid and provide solutions for mental health through creative, innovative approaches to tackle mental health and support wellbeing. Fitrah is usually translated as “original disposition” or “innate nature”, and the purpose of the books is to rewire the brain to this positive (default) nature. harmacist: Shabbir Mellick P Website: www.fitrahdesigns.com
A Royal Connection
Fancy staying on a royal estate or a holiday home with royal connections? By Angela Youngman For those in the know, there are numerous special places where you can stay for a holiday which have connections to royalty, both past and present. Every summer Her Majesty the Queen heads off to her Scottish estate at Balmoral. You can follow in her footsteps over the rest of the year, staying in one of the various holiday cottages such as Karim Cottage or Colt Cottage in the grounds of Balmoral Castle. Enjoy walking in the grounds, exploring the estate and its neighbouring towns, just like the royals. You can even arrange a guided landrover tour up Lochnagar Mountain, observing local wildlife such as red deer, red squirrels and grouse. The only setback is that you need to book up long in advance – these are very popular holiday destinations; so plan this for next year or even the year after! Another of The Queen’s favourite estates is Sandringham in Norfolk, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge live. There are wide beaches, beautiful countryside and pretty towns such as Burnham Market and Old Hunstanton;. There are also attractions such as Norfolk Lavender which offers lots of holiday activities to anyone who stays in Sandringham’s quirky Appleton Water Tower: Built in 1877 on the edge of the estate, it was designed to provide fresh water for the estate after tests had shown that the previous supply was the probable cause of Edward, Prince of Wales catching typhoid whilst staying at Sandringham. A viewing room on the top
84
floor provides royal picnickers with a pleasant rural setting during inclement weather. When no longer needed to provide a water supply, the Landmark Trust converted the tower into a two bedroomed holiday home, with its own roof terrace offering spectacular views across Norfolk.
Head westwards to the Duchy of Cornwall. This is part of the estate of the Prince of Wales, where you will find a wide range of really lovely properties containing high quality furniture. How about staying in Restormel Manor? This 500 year old Gothic style mansion with its own extensive private gardens is set beside the beautiful River Fowey.
Not far away is the three bedroomed Penlyne Cottage: Located on the border of the ancient manor of Penlyne, close to Restormel Castle this enjoys lovely views across the Fowey Valley. Perhaps you would prefer a stay on the Prince of Wales’ Welsh estate. Llwynwermod Farm is a remote location in West Wales, ideal for anyone wanting to get away from it all and enjoy some hiking, or visiting places like Carreg Castle near Llandeilo. The royal link quickly becomes apparent when you start using the crockery emblazoned with the royal coat of arms, the extensive use of Welsh fabrics and furnishings, or seeing pictures from the Prince’s own collection on the walls. There are several cottages on the site, which are rented out for holiday accommodation when the Prince of Wales is not using it himself. Down on the South Coast, the pretty Garden Cottage in the grounds of Walmer Castle looks out over the beautiful garden created to celebrate Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother’s 95th birthday in 1995. The Queen Mother was Lord Warden of Walmer castle until her death in 2002. Guests staying in the cottage can request a personal tour of the Castle. When the castle is closed, you can enjoy private access to the entire eight acre site. Hampton Court Palace is well known for its links with Henry VIII and his six wives. The ghost of one of those unfortunate wives, Katherine Howard, is said to run screaming through rooms of the palace. Guests can book a stay in the Palace’s Georgian House, overlooking Henry VIII’s Real Tennis Court for a very unusual holiday experience. Located close to the Maze and rose gardens, the Georgian House is a lovely place to stay and includes access to all the courtyards and public areas of the Palace throughout your stay. Queen Victoria turned to the Isle of Wight for her holiday breaks. Osborne House was the private home of Queen Victoria and Albert and was completely redeveloped for her extensive family. The children even had a private house in the grounds where they learned to grow vegetables. There are several holiday homes within the grounds of Osborne House, such as the cottages on either side of the ceremonial entrance to Osborne House and a former cricket pavilion used by staff and members of the royal family when they took part in a cricket match on site. Close by is another holiday property with royal connections – Carisbrooke Castle. You can stay in the Bowling Green Apartment, which was once the summer home of Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice. It also has more unfortunate connections – Charles I was imprisoned there during the Civil Wars, and got stuck in the bars of the windows when he tried to escape! Queen Victoria was also fond of Scotland and spent many holidays there. In 1873, she travelled to Inverlochy Castle, just north of Fort William, deep in the Scottish Highlands. She was enthralled, writing in her diary ‘I never saw a lovelier or more romantic spot’. Little has changed since that time, this is still a superb place in which to relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery around a private loch. In the distance, Ben Nevis can be seen towering high above the forests. Now a castle hotel, Inverlochy Castle is a welcoming sight for visitors keen on peace and seclusion. Equally romantic is Borthwick Castle, just 12 miles from Edinburgh, which was a favourite home of another www.britishmuslim-magazine.com
famous royal lady – Mary, Queen of Scots. It is one of the best preserved fifteenth century castles in Scotland, with a stunning keep surrounded by tall walls. In 1567, Mary Queen of Scots fled from Borthwick dressed as a page, following the murder of her husband Lord Darnley. The superbly restored interiors evoke the centuries of dramatic Scottish history and the castle comes complete with a traditional minstrel’s gallery for musicians in the Great Hall, secret doors and spiral staircases. If you prefer a warmer climate, it is worth considering one of the overseas locations popular with the royals. Since opening in 1954, Half Moon, Montego Bay Jamaica has been a favourite venue of HM The Queen, Prince Philip, the Prince of Wales and, most recently, Prince Harry, all of whom have stayed in the privacy of the five bedroomed Royal Villa. With two miles of private beach, the secluded waterfront paradise offers luxury and privacy, as well as the opportunity to enjoy such unusual experiences as swimming with horses and scuba diving, or trying relaxing activities like pilates, yoga and spa treatments. www.duchyofcornwallholidaycottages.co.uk www.balmoralcastle.com www.celticcastles.com/castles/inverlochy www.english-heritage.org.uk www.halfmoon.com

London’s hustlingbustling ‘Arab Street’ A pure delight to visitors Words: Rabi’ah.M For someone visiting or living in London, heading to ‘Arab Street’ is a must, as it features an array of colourful Arab cafes, restaurants and shops, giving an instant feeling of being in the Middle East. Best of all is the late opening times, which encourage an increasing number of people to hang out. The term ‘Arab Street’ refers mainly to the areas of London, which include Bayswater, Edgware Road, Queensway and Knightsbridge. A plethora of Arab restaurants serving delicious food; be it Lebanese, Moroccan, Kuwaiti or North African, all are on the serving platter. Then there are the countless shisha cafes which are packed with people, especially during the weekend. Some of the notable restaurants I totally recommend are: Maroush (there are quite a few, but Maroush Express and Maroush Garden are the best); Al Arez; Mazaya; Ranoush; and Beirut Café. If you are not in the mood to dine in but wish to grab a takeaway, you should check out the best shawarma, served in London by Café Helen. Not only do they serve scrumptious shawarmas but falafels and a platter of
86
aubergine, Arabic pickles, steamed broccoli and hummus. Besides the foodie side of ‘Arab Street’, you can purchase food, clothing and other products made in the Middle East from the various shops in convenient situations, i.e. Mustafa happens to be one of the leading shops.
...there are the countless shisha cafes which are packed with people, especially during the weekend... It would not be wrong to say that London’s heartbeat is truly woven into ‘Arab Street’ the hustle and bustle keeping it alive until the late hours and giving a welcoming, hospitable feeling. Moreover, it is a ‘one-stop shop’, giving visitors who have never been there a taste of the Middle East and is ideal for those students from the Middle East who feel homesick.

Aida Khan’s Authentic Pakistani Eatery Shola Now opened in White City Place
Following the rapturous response that greeted her Gourmet Karachi Supper Club, TV presenter and chef Aida Khan is to open her first restaurant. Shola will launch in March in White City Place, where the former BBC headquarters have been skilfully reimagined as a new creative campus. It will offer an exceptional but fast casual South Asian culinary experience, using high quality ingredients and innovative cooking techniques. Here you will find fresh and flavourful food the way it has traditionally been enjoyed for generations in the households of Karachi, and all representing amazing value for money.
Determined to prove that Pakistani food is healthy and light, and to communicate the nostalgia she has for the food of her childhood, Aida has based Shola’s menu on family recipes that have been passed down over the years. There are no short cuts or inferior ingredients. Spices are roasted and ground on site, and masalas are made from scratch. Destined to become instant classics are the likes of Tamatar Kee Chutney, sharp smashed tomatoes tempered with a fragrant mix of curry leaves, roasted onion and coriander seeds; Beef Behari Kabab, six hour slow cooked spiced beef flavoured with pepper, cardamom, cinnamon
88
and chillies; zesty Chicken Hara Masala, marinated overnight in a fresh herb yogurt base; Khattee Daal, a mixture of lentils slow cooked and tempered with curry leaves and whole red chillies, and Beef Seekh Kebab, meltin-the-mouth charcoal grilled beef kebabs. Equally delectable desserts round off this flavour-packed culinary offering, spearheaded by Naan Khatai, a crumbly semolina and flour cookie, glazed and sprinkled with freshly chopped pistachios. Aida's credentials are certainly pretty impressive; she wrote and presented an acclaimed TV show that took her across Pakistan where she collected and sampled unique recipes and cooking methods specific to each region. Going even further back in time, she grew up in a family with a rich multifaceted history of food and a deep love for it. Aida’s oldest childhood memories are of long early morning drives at the crack of dawn to central Karachi markets with her father, himself an avid foodie, in search of the crispiest poori or the sweetest halwa for breakfast. His rules for eating have always stayed with her, “Khaana ho, acha ho, aur buhat ho.” (There should be food, good food, and plenty of it.”) Moving to the UK and raising two young boys, Aida became increasingly frustrated by the lack of innovation in Pakistani food in London. From hosting multiple meals for friends and family it was a natural progression to start her own supper club. Concludes Aida, “At Shola our aim is to take you back to an era of simple, clean cooking, the way it has been done in our family kitchens for decades. We hope the food speaks for itself and can’t wait to share a piece of our city with you.” www.sholakitchen.com Shola, White City Place, 201 Wood Lane, White City, London W12 7TU For further information, please contact Leah @ Jori White Public Relations Ltd T: 0207 734 7001 E: leah@joriwhitepr.co.uk

A fine eatery in Designerland By Huma Baig
Bicester Village is a small township of approximately 160 single-storey luxury boutiques of world-famous brands and is about a 45-minute direct train journey from London’s Marylebone station. These retail outlets offer savings of up to 60 percent on the recommended retail price all year round. With countless coaches arriving every moment and over 1,000 free car parking spaces, the Village serves as a magnet for those looking for a retail therapy fix. To match the designer labels running the length and breadth of this outlet shopping centre is an elegant and sophisticated, all-day, grand dining space; Café Wolseley. This fine eatery in Oxfordshire is a café-come restaurant with a take-away patisserie and coffee counter; as well as an adjoining retail shop showcasing a tempting array of shiny Wolseley branded gifts such as, silverware, artisan teas and luxury chocolate truffles. Set up by Chris Corbin and Jeremy King, it follows the same retro-Euro glamourous interiors and classic cuisine as their iconic flagship restaurants in central London, like; Colbert on Sloane Square, and The Ivy near Leicester
90
Square. The double-volume vaulted ceiling, striking black and white chevron floor and a large clock in front of shiny black polished furnishings create a theatrical environment. Greeted by impeccably attired waitresses and waiters, it’s impossible not to adore the grandeur of Café Wolseley. Serving breakfast from 8.30am, followed by lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, the all-day menu features classic dishes like tartes flambé, a choice of pastas and healthy seasonal salads. The desserts are traditional and include the likes of yoghurt ice cream with lemon curd and whipped cream and a pistachio tuile. Halal chicken is available, as well as vegan and gluten free options. Dinner for two will set you back approximately £100 with a 12% discretionary service charge, but indulging in this piece of luxury, visitors do feel spoilt in this classy restaurant. It is advisory to book a table beforehand as the queues are often quite long at this popular eatery. All in all, the classy Café Wolseley is full of atmosphere and has something for the transitional eaters after a day of shopping, as well as the fine diners looking for something special.
