From the Executive Principal Dear Parents Last night I set out the forthcoming priorities for the school as we move forward at a meeting for the whole staff. I would like to share those priorities with you now in brief; 1. Continuing to build on our academic success and heritage; Enhanced staff training, rigorous standards, pupil support, more regular inspection, a focus on assessment for learning techniques. 2. Building our sporting pedigree; Even more Inter-house competition, intercampus competition, FOBISSEA games, inter-schools competition, a more tightly managed ASA sign up process. 3. A continuing focus on Behaviour and Social Graces; Eating habits and table manners, polite greetings, pride in personal appearance. 4. Building pride in our school community; Even more children‘s work beautifully displayed in the school, celebrate and communicate children‘s success to parents, regular and informative communication between home and school, involving the Parent Group, creating a more agile and streamlined decision making process. Many of these things are already in place. The secondary school daily email is hugely appreciated by parents. A number of families will already have received a personal call from me to compliment a star of the week on great work. Many children have been spoken to by myself or other teachers about uniform, good manners (or sometimes a quick reminder about the right thing to do). My constant reminder to myself and the whole school community is always one of continual improvement. Equally a number of these are easy to say but require constant attention and resolve to ensure real results. Practical and realistic steps are being taken to build our school in all of these areas. Our SAT results are second to none. Our school inspectors from the UK arrive shortly to give practical and realistic advice and direction to teachers on all areas of development and student achievement. Of course the British School community and atmosphere will be maintained and cherished. The students here feel the building sense of pride and success. Please feel free, as ever, to contact me if you wish to bring any matters to my attention. Best regards Michael Embley Executive Principal

BSB News: News From Sanlitun: From the Headteacher Another cold but bright week this week. The children have been wrapped up warmly and have had the choice to play outside if they are older, but PE has been indoors all week. There is some lovely work from children of all ages in the entrance of the main campus, so please come and take a look as it will change every fortnight. On Tuesday 19th there is a Parent Society meeting at 9am at the main campus. All parents are welcome and if you are keen to be part of this society or want more information on it either email myself janet.brock@britishschool.org.cn or Denise Lewis Martinez, the chairman dclewistt@hotmail.com; This is a great opportunity for you to meet other parents and staff and feel part of the school community. I have received many positive comments about the detailed weekly blurb that goes home on a Friday to all parents from their child‘s teacher. I have now organised for all the blurbs to be collated and put on the website so that parents can read what is happening in every year group. It is amazing how much goes on in a week and fascinating to see the progression from one year to the next. If you look on the front page of the website, under ‗Quicklinks‘ on the left side, there is a new section called ‗A Student‘s Week‘ . You will find the weekly blurbs there. The curriculum booklet for this term will have come home with your child today. This gives you a brief outline of the topics covered this term and a chance to talk about these topics with your child. Any questions please email the teachers or make an appointment to talk to them as we will always make ourselves available. Have a lovely weekend, Janet Brock
Library News, Sanlitun Thank you to Elena and Genevieve Kugelstadt for the lovely book ―Joey the Kangaroo‖ they gave to the library. The book has been signed for our school by the author when they were in England for their Christmas holidays. An Vrombaut is the author and illustrator of the hilarious book ―Joey and the Kangaroo‖. The much appreciated book is displayed in the primary library so that all children can read and look at the author‘s original illustration. Catherine Mang , SLT Librarian
BSB News: News From Sanlitun: Foundation Stage 0 and 1 and oodles of fun! It has been a chilly week but most of us in Pre-Nursery spent our mornings nestled in our reading corner, snug and warm, looking at books about zoo and jungle animals. We enjoyed Eric Carle‘s book ‗1 2 3 Zoo‘ so much, that we read it again and again! We did lots of counting - counting bananas, monkeys and even the number of children in class each morning. We experimented with various paint effects to create the body markings of different animals. We dipped marbles into black paint to create the stripes on zebras. We used crunched up paper to paint blotches of brown on a giant giraffe. We went wild tearing yellow paper into strips to create manes for our paper plate lions. We played a game where we had to match the animal sounds we heard to the correct animals. We were really brilliant with our guesses! Some of us donned masks and pretended to be animals. Hildemar and Agastya had lots of fun trying on different masks. Can you guess which one is which? Nursery started their number of the week this week, ‗0‘ and ‗1‘. Lots of counting could be heard from the nursery classrooms and we worked hard writing the numbers in shaving foam, sand and rice. Nursery has been getting fishy making a class fish tank full of lots of beautiful fish. Our story of the week has been ‗Dear Zoo‘ by Rod Campbell. What makes a good or bad pet? We think elephants are too big and lions are too fierce! We finished of the week making colourful lizards and snakes. Reception have been looking at different rhymes this week. One of our rhymes was ‗We love noodles!!‘ We learnt our rhyme and thought of other words which rhymed with noodles – some of these were very funny! We then watched the adults make some noodles for us to try. Some of us had oodles of noodles in a pile up to the sky. My oh My! Foundation Stage Team
BSB News: News From Sanlitun: Key Stage One Year 1 in Sanlitun have been very excited to start their new topic of Healthy eating. The children have been thinking about which foods are good to eat a lot of and which foods they can eat occasionally as a treat! The children have been designing and making place mats with healthy breakfasts on and we have also made some yummy fruit salads, trying out new and interesting fruits! In Year 2 the children have been using the topic of Beijing to create some beautiful, pastel artwork; cutting out building silhouettes to create a city skyline at sunset. In I.C.T the children went on to create cityscapes using shapes and pattern on the computer. A lovely, creative week for Key Stage 1 in Sanlitun! Nicola King, Sanlitun
Key Stage Two This week year 4 has been full of budding Scientists. Appropriately we have been finding out about how to keep things warm! First of all we considered all the warm clothes we have been wearing during this spell of cold weather. Then we thought about the materials the clothes were made from. We then designed our own experiments to test out various materials‘ insulating properties. Carefully we recorded the temperature of the water in our cups using a thermometer. We found out that if you want to buy a new winter coat to keep you warm this year, it should be made of fur fabric! Janette Watt
KS2 Science Investigations at Sanlitun Year 5 have begun a new science topic called ‗Gases all around us‘. This week they took part in an afternoon of scientific investigation, investigating the question: ‗Does air exist?‘. The children carried out seven different investigations, gathering evidence that air exists around us. The children were able to do this through careful observations. The children examined: the effects of squeezing sponges underwater; running with open umbrellas; the weight of an inflated balloons and more. Luckily, all of the children came to the conclusion that air does exist. This is very lucky for us all! Stuart Young, Sanlitun
BSB News: News From Sanlitun: Explorers This week has been incredibly busy for Year 5. Not only have we all started this term‘s new topic, Xi‘an, but Class 5A have also b een c o n sol i dati n g th ei r understanding of last term‘s topic, Explorers, in preparation for their class assembly. For the assembly the children have had group tasks to focus on throughout the week. A group of children recreated the Maori legend Maui and the Sun, and acted it out as a play. Kimbo was Maui, Sam was Maui‘s brother, Evelyn his sister and Jiyu was The Sun. It was fantastic. Move over Tom Cruise – Kimbo‘s in town! Julian, Alex and Zhuan Ee showed everyone their version of the Haka, a Maori war dance, and a few of the pupils became explorers: William was Zheng He, Kimbo was Christopher Columbus, JaeYoung was Captain Cook and Joey was Captain Scott. The narrators had an incredibly important role and spoke in clear loud voices. Well done Max, Lucy, Annie and Joey. The children had a chance to show their parents the fantastic video diaries they made from ‗Antarctica‘, as well as their stop-animation movies of Maui and the Sun. Year 5 have had truly amazing adventure learning all about Explorers, and can‘t wait to go on their own exploration to Xi‘an in March! Christine Armstrong – Year 5
Music What can you play? I play the violin/cello! The 2009/10 academic year started with great excitement for our Year 3 students. Entering Key Stage 2 they now have the chance to learn a string instrument! The music department, together with our very talented violin teacher, Ms Maggie, carefully selected suitable instruments for the children, looking at their height and the size of their hands. Once the groups were organised we started playing ‗pizzicato‘ on open strings. After lots and lots of practice all Year 3 children are really confident in plucking E/A/D/G-s on the violin and A/D/G/C-s on the cello so we decided to face the new challenge of learning how to hold the bow. It was very difficult at the beginning, however, it was well-worth all the hard-work and after a while we started enjoying the sound of our instruments. Then we learnt the position of our left hand and now we know the right place for all 4 fingers. We can keep our thumb at the back of the neck of the instrument while putting our fingers on and lifting them off the fingerboard. In Year 4 we‘ve already had a year playing our string instruments so we started the new school year by learning new songs. We had a few new children join the string groups and they had to work extremely hard to catch up with the rest of the groups. At the beginning of the year they had to learn everything from holding their instruments and bows to all the notes. They‘ve done an excellent job and gradually started joining in the songs played by the more advanced children, sometimes only on open strings, which brought a lovely new colour to the pieces. All the Year 3 and 4 children have worked really hard in their PIPS lessons and we are proud to announce that we have a selection of our favourite songs we would like to share with you in our annual ‗PIPS‘ concert, Music Circus III on the 26th of February in the wonderful theatre of our Shunyi campus. Hope you can come along and enjoy it! Vera Mitford, Music teacher
BSB News: News From Shunyi: Message from Head of Primary Webs Of Kindness in the Primary School KS1 started their busy week with an assembly all about the ‗webs of kindness‘. The children made a web to show that kind deeds link us all together at BSB. The children‘s list of kindness they had experienced at school was very long indeed and included: children who took them to the nurse, who played with them when they were alone, who picked up fallen coats, who opened doors for others, helped them find their book, etc. On Friday, this idea was the focus of the Primary School assembly and the children thought about the kindnesses we have shown others outside our school in China and abroad, namely Bread of Life Bakery and Nothing But Nets (in east Africa). We also heard the wonderful news about baby Mary‘s cleft operation and the children have been set the task of discussing ―What‘s next, BSB?‖ at their class Student Council meeting next week. The children have been challenged to be like Spiderman and create ‗webs of kindnesses‘ all around them. Showing kindness and consideration towards others is a good way of being named ―Star of the Week‖ in class, and this positive reinforcement initiative is being rolled out across KS1 and KS2 in the coming weeks. Next week will be busy and productive too, with a parents‘ meeting with Eurest on Tuesday at 9am (please do came along and learn more about our school lunch service) and training for parents who wish to volunteer to help with reading in the Primary School on Wed at 9am. Our new Baby Group (Wed at 1.30pm in the FS softplay room) starts too and we have Tumble Tots (2-3 year-olds) on Thursday at 9am which is a toddler movement class for parents and walking youngsters. Both groups for babies and toddlers are open to all in Shunyi so please do tell interested friends. Our group of mum artists continue to have their weekly oil painting lessons in school and their work is very impressive. Please do contact us if you need a venue for a parent event – perhaps we can help out! Have a lovely weekend and we hope you enjoy reading the Curriculum Booklet for your child‘s year group which were sent home today. The booklets aim to give an overview of the curriculum this term. Further curricular information can be found in the Curriculum (Primary School) section of the school website (Click here) and from class teachers too. Have a lovely weekend. Jane Smith Head of Primary
BSB News: News From Shunyi: Foundation Stage Foundation Stage antics this week! The children in the Foundation Stage have been as busy as ever this week as they have enthusiastically explored their different topics. It has been wonderful to welcome all the new children to our classes and watch the new friendships developing. Playing games with new friends In Nursery, this week, the children have been continuing exploring the topic of ―pets.‖ They have been talking about more unusual pets and how to look after them. The week ended with some real pets coming to visit the children on ―pet day!‖ Thank you so much to the parents who helped with this. Nursery KM class have presented some of their pet paintings in the school foyer. They look wonderful, so if you have time, please come and take a look. The children have also had fun this week exploring the idea of rhyming work. They have been making ―silly soup‖ full of ingredients that rhyme with the word cat!! Yum Yum! Hmmm. What shall I buy at the pet shop ? Pre – Nursery children have being exploring the topic of ―farm animals‘, with various sorting and matching games as well as a range of creative tasks. Their repertoire of animal songs and rhymes is growing. We do hope that you get to hear them at home too as they become more familiar with them Painting my cat! Last, but not least are the Reception children. They too have been learning about rhyming words this week and have been learning silly songs and rhymes whilst looking carefully at the rhyming patterns and letters. Linked to this, they have explored some lovely creative activities in support of different rhymes. The rhyme called ―Oodles of noodles‖ gave them the lovely opportunity to go to the cooking room and make some delicious veggie noodles! Yum Yum once again!! Kirsty Massie, Nursery Teacher and Foundation Stage Co-ordinator
Key Stage One Year 1 have been continuing with their topic of ―Sound and hearing‖. They continued to explore musical instruments, learning the names of different instruments, and describing the sounds that they make. They also began their designs for their own musical instrument, which they will be making over the next few weeks. In literacy they wrote instructions for making a shaker out of paper cups and rice, then followed the instructions to make their own brightly coloured shakers, which they will be using in their assembly next week.

BSB News: News From Shunyi: Year 2 having fun Year 2 had a chance to use their Art skills to help creating their clay them with their learning this week. In literacy we worked in pairs to create a superior creature out of animals. clay, or ‗Lord of the Animals‘, which helped us think of WOW words to make the descriptions we wrote the next day very effective indeed. The children also enjoyed, as part of our topic on Cityscapes, making a Beijing skyline at sunset. To do this we first used soft pastels for the background and then drew the shapes of different buildings, ancient and modern, that we had been studying onto some black card. We then cut these out and stuck them onto our backgrounds. Trevor Gibson
Key Stage Two Year 3 has had a busy week this week. In literacy they have been learning the key features of instructional writing. Feel free to ask your child about the features of instructional texts. Can they tell you what sort of verb is used in instructions? In numeracy they have learned that multiplication and division sums can be solved using more than one method. In science they have been learning about magnetism and ways to identify materials that are magnetic. They have also conducted an investigation to find out which is the strongest magnet. In Year 4 the children have continued looking at poetry during their literacy hour. This week they have looked at the features of haiku, cinquain and acrostic poems. They then used what they have learned to write their own dragon poems. In numeracy they have focused on adding and subtracting sums of money using both the partitioning and column method. In science they have started thinking about the properties of a solid and a liquid. In topic they have continued learning about China. They have located their home country on a globe and then thought about possible routes to get to their home country from China. Well done everyone, have a well earned weekend. Nicola Thompson Year 4 Shunyi
The Highwayman First week of our ASA‘s for this term. Our many new pupils were pointed in the right direction and made a quick start to their new ASA. With over 40 ASA‘s to choose from there were some tough decisions to make: table tennis or team building? Scottish dancing or Spanish? This week, Year 5 have been continuing their work on the poem The Highwayman, thinking about the figurative language in the poem and trying to use similar language in their own verses. In particular, the children have tried to describe scenes and weather using metaphors. They also put themselves ‗in the hotseat‘ and had question sessions in character – a great way to learn about characters‘ motives!

BSB News: Mr Fisher has added a new sport to the Olympic Games, Times Tables! The ―Best Time Winner‖ was Edward- fantastic work, well done! Edward gets an amazing 5 House Points. Most improved time was Emily, who also receives 5 House Points. Keep up the hard work Year 5! Year 6 have been getting to grips with their ‗Global Warming‘ topic. The children have acted out the process; Grace was our sunshine, sending her rays Austin and Sam down to Earth (Celine and Daisuke) to keep us warm. Stephanie and Edward were our protecting ozone layer and were happy to let of our rays back out into space. But then Joel and Jason, our pollutants, turned up and they wouldn‘t let anybody out. Our lovely Earth really started to feel the heat! As well as acting out the process, we have also been watching the DVD ‗An Inconvenient Truth‘ in which Al Gore explains some of the finer details. In literacy, we have been looking at, analyzing and performing the poem ‗The Jabberwocky‘. Now we are starting to write our own poems in the same style and we are looking forward to some interesting results! Geraldine Thomason
Sports News U19 Basketball The boys and girls were both in action on Wednesday this week. The girls played IAB at home and the boys took a second trip to BCIS. The boys put in their best performance of the season so far with a much improved display. BCIS employed a full court press for the duration of the game but the boys were able to develop strategies to mange this pressure. Under the boards rebounding has improved and all players were more willing to shoot. Final score 38-22L Man of the Match: Axel. This week the girls under 19‘s basketball team put in a good performance against a very well organized IAB team, but the final score came to 10-17 to IAB. Whilst they did not manage to come out on top they showed great spirit and played some very nice basketball at times. In particular, our ability to defend as a unit improved significantly from our previous games. We hope to take the lessons learned from this defeat into our next game against Tianjin, and the tournament thereafter. Boys play IAB at Home tonight and TIS and IST in Tianjin tomorrow. Girls play IST tomorrow as well. Next week training will focus on final preparation for the Tournament on Saturday. Swim Team The swim team started last week. I was delighted to see so many students (and parents) from Year 2 to Year 12 taking part in training. Last night there was a real ‗buzz‘ in the pool, 25m times were recorded to provide a ‗benchmark‘ for improvements as the season develops. This term there are two Meets, the first on February 28 in Tianjin and the second on March 6 here in Beijing. Training for the next three weeks will focus on aerobic condition and stroke refinement. Julian Barnsley, Athletic Director & Activities Coordinator
EAL: What a busy week at BSB! We‘ve learnt about instructions and ―bossy‖ verbs in Years 1 and 3, and Year 4 have written such fantastic tankas and haikus. It‘s not so easy, because they have to think about the number of syllables in each line, so hats off to them for all the hard work! Years 5 and 6 have learnt all about simile and metaphor, and have started very successfully on their own verses. In Year 2 they have continued with the ―Lord of the Animals‖ theme, and worked very hard to use WOW words and connectives in their writing. See you all next week. Andrew Morrissey Music What can you play? I play the violin/cello! The 2009/10 academic year started with great excitement for our Year 3 students. All request forms should have been handed in, including forms from music scholars. Students should check the timetables next week for the time of their first lesson. Any problems please inform the music department. There are many new secondary students who have joined us and we would like to extend a warm welcome to any keen vocalists to join our Choir which rehearses on Monday and Friday. The instrumental ensembles are up and running and students should remember to bring their instruments to school on the relevant days. This week has also seen the completion of Mr. Webb-Mitchell's recording project. Over the last two months Mr. Webb-Mitchell has been creating a recording of four songs from his song-cycle 'Song's of Awe and Wonder'. This piece is an ambitious nine movement song-cycle for Soprano, Tenor soloist and orchestra. Next week the CD's will be produced and will be available to any students with a serious interest in composition. We all wish Mr. Webb-Mitchell the best of luck with his composition.
