Issue 20 26th February 2010

From the Executive Principal Dear parents The music circus this week was just extraordinary! It was a genuine pleasure to be there and witness all the students performing so well even under the full glare of the lights and all the parents and teachers watching them. The PIPs programme is a huge strength of BSB and one that was clearly demonstrated on the day. I would like to thank Jennie and all the music teachers for their contribution…superb. Today we played host to Principals and teachers as well as administrative staff from the Nord Anglia Group. They came to Beijing to begin the process of our Employee Engagement plan. This is a process whereby all Nord Anglia Education staff get together to contribute to the life and effectiveness of the schools and their functioning. Also to demonstrate our commitment to training and developing our staff. Of course all of these programmes are aimed squarely at improving the quality of what we do, care for and educate your children. I‘m pleased to report that the first meeting was successful, friendly and purposeful.

International Day—To Be Confirmed

Have a lovely weekend Mike Embley

BSB News: Whole School, Shunyi and Sanlitun: MUSIC CIRCUS III On Thursday afternoon children from Years 3 to 6 from both campuses performed their PIPS instruments on stage in the Shunyi theatre to a very appreciative audience. Each year group performed 3 or 4 pieces that they have been working on in their PIPS lessons. The afternoon's concert was a great opportunity for parents and teachers to see the fantastic progress that our young musicians are making on their musical instruments. A huge well done to everyone involved! Jennie Grierson Head of Primary Music

BSB News: News From Sanlitun: From the Headteacher There are lots of opportunities next week to come into school and see what is happening in the classrooms as well as looking at lots of new displays in the corridors. We have put up the work done on Chinese New Year day and it looks fantastic. On Tuesday Y1-6 have an Open Morning and parents are welcome to come for coffee at 8.15am and listen to a brief introduction to the morning then visit both their own child‘s class and any other class they would like to see. It is a lovely way to get a feel for how we teach and the hard working but fun environment your child/ children experience every day. The Parent Society have started collecting for the Jumble Sale and would be grateful for any donations which can be left in the front entrance. I am flying to England on Friday 5th March to start the recruitment process for the next academic year. The school is growing and we will need to consider the fact that there will be a third Year 2 class. Have a lovely weekend! Janet Brock

EAL It is always great to see how the EAL students in Sanlitun are coming on. To see students who were afraid to talk at the beginning of the year laughing, smiling and chatting with their peers and teachers in English is a wonderful experience. It's also amazing to see EAL students speaking confidently and clearly during their class assemblies. There is one piece of advice I'd like to give all EAL students: Every student has a "remember book." This book is a tool that they can use to write down ANY new vocabulary they learn anywhere in the school. It can be very useful, but not every EAL student is using it in the best way. If you have a "Remember Book" pease remember to bring your EAL book to EVERY lesson and write down any new words. This book is like your own personal dictionary.Don't leave it at home or on your teacher's desk-keep it with you so you can use it whenever you need it. Don't forget your remember book! Kaz Michalak We have seen some speedy progression in gymnastics ASA over the past few weeks. All children are competent in their roll, balance and jump (star, tuck and pencil) sequencing. As a result of this new found confidence we are beginning to interlink these movements which will allow for further advancement in our gymnastic ability. We are really starting to look like real gymnasts! We have also introduced the Springboard as a form of rebound equipment which we are enjoying using thoroughly, not only will this further heighten our confidence but also our overall gymnastic technique.

BSB News: News From Sanlitun: Foundation Stage The PNR Hair Salon has been bursting with many hair-raising activities this week as we tried on new hair styles and were busy blow drying and combing our new tresses. Our three week long theme – Clothes started off with socks and shoes. We made a 3-D wardrobe, and painted socks, made giant shoes and topped it all off with a shoe parade, showcasing our fabulous designs. The Nursery classes have been down on the farm. We have made lots of animal masks, such as baaing sheep, mooing cows, clucking chickens, oinking pigs and hopping rabbits. Many stories about being on the farm have been enjoyed by the children and the teachers. We have started painting our farm scenes which we can‘t wait to display! The number 4 was a tricky number to write this week but with a bit of practice we can all manage to write it correctly. Reception had a very special visitor help them learn about their topic this week – lifecycles of a person. We have discussed what happens when we are babies‘ right through to when we are old. Baby Jonathon (Mrs Ren‘s son) let us give him a bath and we could share our new knowledge with Mrs Ren about what he needs in his bag and why he might cry. When he got sad we sang ‗Twinkle, twinkle little star‘ in our quietest voices and he liked that. Sam Dashwood, Sanlitun

BSB News: News From Sanlitun: Key Stage One Year 1 Sanlitun have been extremely excited to start their new topic of ‗Life in the Polar regions‘. The children have been learning about where the polar regions are, the weather conditions in the polar regions and have also been learning about life for the Inuit people in the Arctic circle. The children loved finding out about the Inuit food (including grass and Walrus), Inuit‘s main form of transport (Husky dog sleds) and Intuit‘s homes (Igloos and Tupacs). 1M have been practicing hard for their assembly next week! After the celebrations last week, Year 2 Sanlitun have been busy using poetic language such as onomatopoeia and simile to write amazing fireworks poems after Chinese new year. They have been reading and performing their poems using expression and animation. Meijie Gonzalez-Alverez (1K), Tony Oh (2I) and Nefertiti Cheung (2G) were KS1‘s star citizens this week. Nikki King, Sanlitun

Key Stage Two 3Y performed an amazing Egyptian assembly on Friday when they took their audience back in time 4000 years to when the pyramids were being built and Pharaohs ruled over the land. The assembly took an unusual twist when a pyramid planner sat down to watch TV! He watched an array of TV programmes including Blue Ptah, which featured an instructional video stating how to make a mummy, and POP-yrus Idol in which the children sang a magnificent song about mummies. Adverts for futuristic airtight canopic jars and delicious ‗Pharaoh‘ Rocher chocolates appeared between the programmes. An episode of Hieroglyph Countdown ended the assembly by testing the viewers on their knowledge of ancient Egyptian writing. The children‘s hard work paid off with this ‗pharaoh-nominal‘ assembly! Well done 3Y!

Let’s have an Argument! In year 5 this week, we have been looking at persuasive writing. The children were told that Mrs. Brock was considering cancelling the visit to Xi‘an! This was terrible news as the children are all looking forward to it. The children had to persuade Mrs. Brock that the visit should be allowed to go ahead. In order to do this effectively, the children had to come up with suitable reasons and present these in a way in way that would persuade Mrs. Brock. Drama activities ensured that the class were able to present an argument effectively and this then helped them to write letters to Mrs. Brock. I‘m sure that the children will be successful in persuading her to let them go. Unless, of course, Mrs. Brock can persuade them otherwise!

BSB News: News From Sanlitun: Library News Sanlitun Dear Parents, Books from the International School Book Club have been sent home this week. Children were excited when they saw the books had arrived in school. The library has also benefited by receiving some free books from children‘s purchase. Many thanks for your support and I hope you all enjoy a reading weekend. Catherine Mang

Storytelling So far in storytelling the children have listened to stories told in a variety of ways. They have listened to stories told traditionally through the use of picture books, but have also had the opportunity to sit back, relax, close their eyes and use their imaginations as they listen to stories spoken on audio Cd's. As well as listening to stories the children have also retold many of their favourite stories including 'The Three Little Pigs' and 'The Sly Fox and The Little Red Hen' using role play. In groups they discuss the plot and identify the main characters, then the children rehearse before performing in front of the class - the children have thoroughly enjoyed using role play to retell their favourite stories. Next, the children will have the opportunity to create and produce their very own miniature story book.

Sanlitun PE Department On Tuesday 23rd February our under 11s' BSB handball team took part in a game against Harrow School. We had an absolutely wonderful day, and each team displayed wonderful sportsmanship throughout the course of the day which would certainly make the whole of BSB proud. The final score was 11-8 to Sanlitun. A well deserved defeat, which is a testament to our dedication, enthusiasm and passion to the sport. Go Bears! Bobby Wang

BSB News: News From Shunyi: Message from Head of Primary A Learning Community at BSB: Lunchtime Clubs for Pupils and Maths Workshops for Mums and Dads This week saw the sign up for the new Shunyi Primary Lunchtime Clubs which start next week. So that children can be more active and develop even more skills during the school day, the clubs have be organsied mainly around sports. Swim training, basketball, 2 football sessions, handball, kwik cricket, rhythm and tap dance are all on offer and many children signed up enthusiastically today. Both choirs continue to run alongside the sporty clubs and we have also added a Bookworm Club for avid readers. Many thanks to the staff who have offered their lunchtimes to run clubs and their weekends to run teams. This week the classes have been finishing off their Chinese New Year canvases. Each class took a zodiac animal as the basis for their huge design and the children have been busily putting the finishing touches to their class ‗work of art‘. As always the creativity and skills of the children is terrific. Please do look out for the 12 large canvases on your visits to the school. Do also visit our parent art exhibition in the main foyer, by the coffee shop.

Next week, we have 2 very important workshops for parents. Both feature maths teaching – KS1 parents are invited on Tuesday at 6pm, and KS2 parents should come along on Wednesday at 6pm. Miss Hall (Numeracy Coordinator for Shunyi) and team will explain how we teach maths, and how (and why) we teach different methods of calculations. Methods have changed in recent years and these workshops are a great way for parents to update their maths knowledge. Please do come along – either complete the slip attached to Miss Hall’s letter about the event or email her at catherine.hall@britishschool.org.cn The school rabbits are back after the holidays, looking bigger than ever. We are all looking forward to the warmer weather when being outside will be more pleasant. Our next sets of plans for the outdoor school environment involve setting up planting areas for each of the classes to grow vegetables and flowers. Have a great weekend. Jane Smith Head of Primary

BSB News: News From Shunyi: ASA Junior String Ensemble Junior String Ensemble is a group of talented children from both campuses who enjoy playing their violins and cellos and are intrigued to get a feel of working together in a ‗real orchestra‘. Our young members are either having private lessons on their string instruments or are children who have been inspired by their strings PIPS in Year 3 and 4 and wanted to carry on playing. The ensemble‘s repertoire includes a variety of classical pieces, latin dances like Tango and Cha-Cha and special arrangements of pop songs that make our group sound even more enjoyable for young audiences. We successfully performed at the first Primary Concert in the autumn and are now preparing excitedly for the next show on the 24th and 25th of March. We are looking forward to seeing you there! Vera Mitford Primary Drama This week we have been looking at the story of ‗The Three Little Pigs‘. Working in small groups, the children had to recreate the story into a short play. After watching each group, we have now decided to re-tell the story, adding extra information by reading between the lines. For example, in our version, Mr. Wolf is suffering from a terrible cold, which makes him do the biggest sneezes you‘ve ever seen! Maybe the big, bad Wolf isn‘t so bad after all… Tracey Hill We have 20 budding table tennis players who practice their table tennis skills every week. There are some fun games and more competitive matches as part of a knock-out 5 round tournament where there will be one star player winning a small prize. This has created much excitement over the last 6 weeks with many of the children watching and cheering on peers! Jason and Michelle

In Jewellery Making Club this term, we have made a necklace and bracelet with beads using the children's own individual designs. Then we learnt how to make a simple friendship band using cross stitch strings. And currently we have been putting a lot of thought and effort into creating our own personal jewellery pouches where we can store all the jewellery which we made this term. The outside of the pouch will be decorated with beads and stitchings of patterns, names and pictures of our favourite things. And to finish it up, we will add a ribbon as a final touch. Chervonne Wong

BSB News: News From Shunyi: Foundation Stage Busy times in SY Foundation Stage It‘s been wonderful to watch the children so full of energy after returning to school following the holidays. Each of the Foundation Stage classes has had a busy time launching into their various topics and truly enjoying the sunshine that has accompanied them. Pre Nursery children have been investigating the festival of Chinese New year and how it is celebrated. They have been busy making tiger masks, red lanterns, red envelopes and fireworks. It was particularly fun when they had a go at using chopsticks at snack time with lots of Chinese songs playing at the same time. Nursery children started the week by learning all about the number 4. They made the most of the sunshine by going outside and using water and brushes to write 4‘s all over the playground. We then noticed them begin to disappear! Very very strange! The Nursery children then started the lovely topic all about ―The farm‖. They have made up stories using small world toys, shared farm stories and particularly enjoyed playing some farm games on the Interactive Whiteboard. Take a look around the school over the next week to see some of their lovely farm art and craft work too! Finally, the Reception children started their new topic all about ―Life Cycles‖, and this week they were focusing on human beings and how they change over time. Thank you to all the visitors of different generations who came into class to support this! The children made baby paintings, grandma dolls and had some lovely discussions all about babies! In Numeracy, they have been exploring weighing things as you can see in the photo. It‘s been an interesting and busy week! Kirsty Massie, Nursery Class Teacher and Foundation Stage co-ordinator

Key Stage One This week Year 1 started a new unit of work in art, called ‗Patterns around the World‘. This week‘s focus was on Tartan patterns. The children enjoyed making colourful woven paper patterns. As well as this we have been exploring different materials in our new science topic ‗Materials. Despite all this hard work, Year 1 did find time to celebrate their 200 marble reward by spending a fun half hour in the ICT suite playing games! Year 2 have enjoyed starting a new unit of work on Poetry by sharing their ideas on fireworks and performing some poems with powerful sounding words and actions to go with them! They have also been investigating the properties of different materials such as whether they float or sink, are magnetic or are waterproof by doing experiments – predicting what would happen before doing their testing of these properties. Dawn Ross

BSB News: News From Shunyi: Key Stage Two Both Year 3 and 4 really enjoyed The Music Circus this week and all their teachers were very proud of them! We are all getting very excited about World Maths Day on Wednesday too! Year 3 have had another busy and exciting week. They have begun to compare dialogue in a story with a playscript and spot important features. In numeracy they have been learning to describe 3D and 2D shapes in a variety of ways. We have especially focused drawing lines of symmetry and identifying how many lines of symmetry a shape might have. There has been some excellent art work going on in the Year group. Please do take a look at the Year 3 wall hangings on display in the foyer. Can you name the Egyptian Gods in the picture? Year 4 have begun writing an explanation text about Roman bathing. Did you know the Romans only washed every 9 days! In numeracy Year 4 have been revising Carroll diagrams and Venn Diagrams to help organize data. The children are learning valuable research skills as they begin their exploration of their Roman topic. They have also discussed the process of filtration in science by explaining how to make clean water from muddy water. Cat Hall Happy New Year! Years 5 and 6 bounced back in to class on Monday after a well earned break! And what a busy first week back it‘s been! On top of all the exciting lessons we normally have, (like ordering decimals to 2 decimal places in Y5 and dividing decimals in Y6) we have performed in not 1 but 2 outstanding shows! The first was on Thursday when all the Key Stage 2 children got to show off how great they are at playing their musical instruments. It really was a fantastic performance and one which the children clearly enjoyed being part of. Then this morning Y5 and Y6 got together to present an assembly to the rest of the Primary School all about their visit to Nan Shan Ski Resort earlier in the month. Y5 have been using ‗Movie Maker‘, they made a super film which really captured all the fun that we had at Nan Shan. Unfortunately due to a technical hitch we couldn‘t watch it in the assembly but we will try to show it again next week.Y6 meanwhile decided to act out a few of the ‗incidents‘ which occurred during the day. The younger children certainly appreciated the comedy acting! The children worked hard on their scenes and are becoming brilliant young actors. So many thanks to all of the children for sharing their many talents. Tomorrow some of the children will be competing in an Under 11 Handball Tournament at the German School. We managed to get as far as the quarter finals at the last tournament earlier in the month, so let‘s hope we can go even further tomorrow! Geraldine Thomason

BSB News: Secondary After our so successful doughnuts with dads morning, Yr10 had a yummy French cheese taster lesson! Wednesday French lesson was going to be different! Randy, Ryder, Prateek and Stella headed to the primary cookery room and started setting up the ―four a raclette‖ (cheese oven), washed plates and forks and started melting their Raclette cheese in the oven. It did smell funny but was delicieux! They also tried Comte, the cheese coming from Madame Azeem‘s home town, tomme de savoie, made with cow milk and fromage de chevre (goat cheese). The latter proved to be taste sour and not so popular! We ended our taster lesson with a ―galette des rois‖ (king‘s cake), a traditional almond cake that French people usually eat on the first Sunday in January.Tradition holds that the cake is ―to draw the kings‖ to the Epiphany.―La fève‖(trinket), which can represent anything from a car to a cartoon character, is hidden in the cake and the person who finds it in their slice becomes king for the day and will have to offer the next cake. Originally, ―la fève‖ was literally a broad bean, but they were replaced in 1870 by a variety of figurines out of porcelain or - more recently - plastic. A paper crown is included with the cake to crown the "king" who finds the fève in their piece of cake. Congratulation to Stella who became our queen! To ensure a random distribution of the cake shares, it is traditional for the youngest person to place themselves under the table and name the recipient of the share which is indicated by the person in charge of the service. Prateek, being the youngest, did not break the tradition and decided who was getting what. Madame Azeem Year 10 and 12 trip to Embassy of Djibouti On Thursday, February 25th, a group of Year 10 and Year 12 students went to visit the Embassy of Djibouti (La Republique De Djibouti). Djibouti is a small country on the east coast of Africa between Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea. The main purpose of the trip was to help prepare the students for the Model United Nations Conference that they will be participating on the Friday to Sunday 12th to 13th March. Djibouti is one of the countries the students from BSB will be representing. Continued on next page……..

BSB News: Secondary Mr. Ismail Mohamad Djama, the Conseiller, kindly showed the group around the embassy, then gave us an overview of his country. This was followed by a question and answer session about regional and global issues that are important to Djibouti. A big thank you to Mr Djama and the Djibouti Embassy for giving up their time and for making us feel most welcome. Mr Nick Bourne and Miss Ella Liu

Judges and helpers needed BSB will be hosting a World Scholarship Regional competition on the weekend of March 20 / 21. About 170 students from many regional and international schools (including 12 from BSB) will be participating in the competition. The main theme of the competition is ‗A World Divided‘. One of the four main events of each tournament is a team debate (teams are comprised of three students). We would be tremendously grateful for your assistance as judges at this event. On Saturday March 20, judging runs from 1:15pm to 4:30pm, with training and lunch provided for all adjudicators at noon. This tournament is being held at the British School Shunyi Campus. There are copies of the schedule and the debate guidelines. Please don't hesitate to e-mail the chief organizer of the event Mr. - Daniel Berdichevsky (dan@scholarscup.org) for the above information and with any other questions you may have. The students also have to write an essay. We also need a few volunteers to have a go at marking their essays. An answer format will be given. If you are able to judge or mark essays, please email the following – Mr Nick Bourne- the BSB school staff coordinator of the event. nick.bourne@britishschool.org.cn Again, thank you so much for your help. This program wouldn't be possible without the help of volunteers and the courage of students who cross the world to participate. Daniel Berdichevsky / Nick Bourne The World Scholar's Cup is an international non-profit educational foundation that brings secondary school students together online and in person to compete in a series of events related to a special global curriculum. The idea is to build an international community of future leaders and thinkers, while helping students gain new knowledge and skills.

BSB News: Secondary BSB Charity Committee ASA At the beginning of the year, each form nominate their charity representative, who meet on a weekly basis in order to organize events that will enable the school to raise funds in support to charitable organizations. Since the beginning of the year, the BSBCC has already raised 2200 rmb, through cookery books sale, sponsored runs, little change appeal, plastic bottles recycling and Halloween disco, which was organized by year 12 students. The money raised is being shared between the Migrant school of Yimin and Beautiful Harbor Orphanage. Last week, the BSBCC took charge of the Valentines‘ gifts orders. Secondary students could order roses, heart-shaped balloons or simply cards for their beloved or simply good friends. BSBCC members became Cupidon‘s little helpers and organised the delivery of these tokens of friendship. We hope to raise even more funds and help even more people, so if you are interested in what we do, if you have any suggestions or links we might be interested in, don‘t hesitate to contact us! The BSBCC

Secondary ASA Handicraft Workshop We have learnt a fantastic variety of skills in handicraft; all taught to us by Miss Xiao Xiao, who is a true professional when it comes to turning a simple piece of paper into a wonderfully designed display of origami art. However, there is much more to handicraft than origami. This ASA gives you the opportunity to produce just about anything ranging from paper stars to jewellery. In my opinion, it is a very rewarding experience to both the hard-working members of the ASA, but also the people, such as parents, which receive their hand-made gifts.

Golfing ASA The after school Golf Club has been running since the beginning of this term and takes place once a week on a Tuesday. All of our ‗Golfers‘ Range from beginners and upwards and the venue has been very accommodating towards our small group of enthusiasts. Sebastien, Tommy, Franklin have been practicing their accuracy and swing techniques whilst Hannah, Kelvin and Harry have come a long way since performing on their first session. The experience of visiting a superb golfing location makes this a worthwhile activity and could possibly pave the way for producing our up and coming golfing champions at BSB! Mr. P. Readdy
