What impressed me most of all though, was the spirit and camaraderie of our teams. In victory, defeat or the stalemate of a draw they displayed true sporting character and a sense of honourable determination that made our students stand out as real examples. Ladies and Gentlemen…I salute you. Sports has become a big thing for us at BSB and will continue to remain so, many more trophies will line our cabinets. Our sporting programme will be expanding over the coming months so please do watch this space. Social life has been buzzing as well with Muffins with Mums attracting three hundred visitors which was a sugar fuelled delight. Mrs. Smith had to look the other way for a short time as the schools healthy eating policy was wantonly flaunted for just one morning. Of course her indignation was all a sham as I caught her eating a chocolate covered donut later in the day! Have a great weekend

BSB News: Whole School, Shunyi and Sanlitun: Close run match with TEDA The girls under 19 football team played a close match vs Tianjin TEDA international school over the weekend. Real end to end stuff through the whole match with some stellar work from the goal keepers of both sides keeping out a lot of on target shots. The Bears improved quite visibly as the match moved on and made more of chances as they appeared. Defence was disciplined and offence was brave. The game was played in a highly competitive spirit but both sides showed a distinct "sporting" spirit which was a real credit to both teams. The supporters were loud and vocal, the sky was blue and the air was clean and in the end....4-2 to the Bears! Congratulations ladies on an excellent job. And almost as importantly both teams should be congratulated on their comportment during the match. Even when things were a little physical both sides were a credit to their respective schools. More soon! Michael Embley Sports reporter (third class)
Our Under-14 girls’ basketball team off to a great start! Yesterday our Under-14 team represented by Rebekka, Katie, Jenny, Samantha, Irene, Amy and Nandi played their first match against Harrow International School in the ISAC tournament. At half-time the score was 24-6 in our favour. However, Harrow made a strong comeback in the second half but with good defending and strategic substitutions , we managed to hold them off and eventually winning the match 30-26. Congratulations to the team for a superb performance and keep it up! A big thank you to Mr. Tom Hogan for coaching the team. Mr. Ng

BSB News: ASA In drawing ASA this term the children have been studying different drawing techniques including light and shade, tone and colour. We've used many different materials such as charcoal and crayon. We created pieces of work based on still life, imaginative drawing and copying from photographs. All term the children have been turning out excellent and inspiring work. Their efforts can now be seen on display the year 3/4 corridor at Sanlitun.
EAL "It has been another action packed week in the EAL department at Sanlitun. Year 1 are builing their knowledge of key language skills. Year 2 have been writing their own "mixed up" fairy stories.I'm sure you have heard the story about Cinderella who was laughed at by ducks, fell asleep for a hundred years before being woken by a bowl of soup! If you haven't, ask a year 2 student! Year 3 have been doing extra work on the Egyptians, practising their reading skills and deciding what they would put in their tomb if they were Ancient Egytians! Year 4 have been working on the Romans, choosing the most important Roman inventions and explaining their opinions. Year 5 and 6 are working on polishing their speaking and extended writing, focusing on exciting vocabulary. If you want to improve your reading, read about things you are interested in. This will make you want to finish the book and you will enjoy your reading much more!" Kaz Michalak Primary Music UPCOMING CHOIR CONCERTS For children in the Junior Choir and the Junior Chamber Choir the end of term is looking to be a very busy one. Both choirs will be performing in the Primary concerts on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th March, and the Secondary concerts on Wednesday 31st March and Thursday 1st April. The Chamber Choir will also be performing at the Expat Fair at the China World Trade Centre on Saturday 27th March, and for the British Ambassador at the St. George's Day Dinner early next term. Both choirs are working hard to prepare for these performances, and we look forward to seeing you in the audience! ORIGAMI ASA This has been a busy term for our Origami ASA. This type of art work requires, as well as creativity, a lot of patience and sense of proportion that the children have been developing day after day. With our only resources being colored pieces of paper, we have managed to create amazing figures. From super spaceships to wonderful whales, the children have enjoyed every session and are always proud of their achievements constantly looking forward to their next creation.
BSB News: News From Sanlitun: Foundation Stage Magical Music in Foundation! The weather outside was cold and snowy, yet inside the Foundation Stage school on Monday was the noisy sound of bangs drumming, children and parents singing and playing a range of percussion instruments. Everyone was in for a delight as all the children enjoyed sharing a music lesson with their mummies and daddies. Mr Fromer and Mrs Mitford have been working very hard with the children helping them to learn songs, play drums and even play a little tune on their recorders. They shared their favourite songs and invited their parents to come and join in with the fun. One of our favourite songs was ‗Jenny had a dog‘ by Courtney Campbell and we are really looking forward to her coming to our school on Monday 22nd March to teach us more of her songs! Fay Smart
BSB News: News From Sanlitun: Foundation Stage In Sanlitun, Foundation this week we have started ―Spotting‖ children who have been kind and helpful. All the adults in Foundation have been keeping their eyes open and the first five children have been awarded with their certificates. If you would like to see who they are, their kind actions and photographs are on display in the foyer as well as being recorded in our giant ―Spotted‖ book. We look forward to spotting lots more kind and helpful children. ‗Wow!‘ said Agastya as he tried making Pre-Nursery‘s own version of tie -dye fabrics using food colouring and paper napkins. The way the colours spread and mixed together fascinated us and we went on a tiedye spree, creating lots of pieces of ‗fabric‘ that we plan to cut and turn into ‗clothes‘. We made tissue paper brooches, salt dough buttons and enjoyed stories like ‗Corduroy‘ as Mrs. Rinaldi once again dressed up as a bear, but this time, as a bear with a button missing! We also made a bulletin board display of a story we enjoyed – ‗Princess Dress‘. We worked as a class and coloured in her seven dresses, made her a pasta palace and a beautiful pasta dress. We ended our week and ‗Clothes‘ theme with a mini fashion parade, with us trying on different types of clothes and shoes on our own. Creating ‗Yin/Yang‘ this week was Nursery‘s favourite activity. We have started our theme of ‗Opposites‘ and have enjoyed learning all the new vocabulary and the words that go together. We have made a class book of ‗Opposites‘ with our own photographs and pictures of opposites. We learned that Yin and Yang join all the opposites together to create happiness – and we are very happy! What has 8 legs, can run fast and is scary? A spider! This week Reception have been learning about all different types of mini-beasts. We have so far discovered a ladybird, a bee, a spider and a butterfly are all mini-beasts. We have been learning about their body parts and that a mini-beast has 3 parts to its body. We have made our own buzzing bees, drawn our mini-beasts and made ‗Who am I?‘ cards We look forward to what other mini-beasts we will learn about next week. Nancy Applebe, Sanlitun
BSB News: News From Sanlitun: Key Stage One This week in year one the children have been writing their own stories based on Rumplestiltskin and other traditional tales. They looked at the original stories and then changed characters and settings to give a unique, personal touch to their writing. Year One have also continued their topic on the Polar Regions, focusing this week on ice and snow. The children looked at how to change the properties of water from a liquid to a solid and back again. Then they looked at which objects float and sink in water. In Year two the children have continued looking at endangered species. This week they filmed short videos about what they had learnt, and which animals need our help. 2L celebrated their marble reward as well, by making (and eating) brownies! Yum, yum!
Key Stage Two Buy it now! Only 99p! Buy 2 get 1 free! If you had walked past Year 5 this week you might have thought you had stumbled into a big city advertising agency by mistake. In fact year 5 has been really busy creating and marketing a brand new drink. After analysing all of the different persuasive techniques that global companies use to sell their products the children were set the challenge of creating an advertising campaign of their very own. First the children had to come up with an appropriate name for their products before creating an eye catching logo and a memorable slogan. In addition to making some amazing persuasive posters for their magic drinks, year 5, wrote, stared in and edited their own TV adverts. Using flip cameras, windows movie maker and the magic of effects the children managed to produce some exciting, catchy and often hilarious adverts that would persuade even Mr. Young to spend some of his money. Watch out parents; with all of these great new techniques you might find your children are a little too good at persuading you now.
BSB News: News From Sanlitun: Class 4H in Sanlitun have been getting into the spirit of their topic – The Rotten Romans. We have looked at a wide variety of aspects of Roman life – everything from the role of the Celts, Roman Soldiers, Roman Baths, Roman School, Roman Food and Roman Leisure. The Roman soldiers proved to be of great interest, especially as Mr. Smart had created replicas of a Roman shield, sword and helmet - dressing up as a Roman soldier proved to be very exciting for all. And it‘s not just the children who have been keen to get involved as the photo of Mrs. Brock in full Roman soldier regalia shows! During the Open Morning the children were treated to a circus of Roman activities. Here we sampled some Roman food including meats, bread and cheese, and grapes in honey – the peacock tongues were left off the menu. We also experienced how the Romans would write at school using a replica tablet and went about attempting some tricky Roman sums in Roman numerals. The children found out information about the gladiator using the skimming and scanning techniques taught in Literacy and also had fun finding out information on the Romans in the Roman Cyberhunt – fun filled indeed! The highlight of our Roman topic so far has undoubtedly been making roman bread. Linking to our work on measures and weight in Numeracy the children honed their culinary skills by getting stuck into the bread making process. Weighing out each ingredient carefully was essential if the children were to prove successful. It was a truly messy affair with flour and dough making its way to every part of the classroom, but the end products were extremely tasty. All part of the fun in Year 4! Jim Harvey - Year 4 teacher, Sanlitun
PE Swimming lessons started for some classes this week. The PE Dept are very pleased with how hard the children have been working in the water. We are looking forward to seeing the continued development over the coming weeks. If your child is currently swimming please ensure that they have the correct kit, this should include hat and goggles. Sport at Sanlitun is filling lunch hours this term. The children are continuing to enjoy handball, football, hockey and netball each week. Our U9 football team will be attending an inter-campus fixture at Shunyi this Sunday which the team are very excited about. Katie Robinson PE Teacher, BSB Sanlitun
BSB News: News From Shunyi: Message from Head of Primary THINK, EAT and SWIM At Monday‘s assembly, we celebrated the achievements of our Aqua Bears Swim Team who have had 2 very successful swim meets recently, locally and in Tianjin, All participants received their golden yellow BSB badge to signify that they have represented the school. We are very proud of our young swimmers who are all improving their times at each successive meet and many of whom train 4 times per week. Go Bears! The highly successful ―Muffins with Mums‖ event took place on Friday and was very well attended: the 450 donuts, cinnamon rolls and muffins did not last long but all there had a great chat and met some new faces too. The coffee shop, Chatterbox, is doing very well too – thanks to all the hard working mums and dads who bake and serve in our newest social venue. The Parents‘ Society met on Tuesday and are already planning the next series events and how to spend the profits from the coffee shop. They don‘t rest on their laurels in the Parents‘ Society! Friday‘s assembly considered the idea of thinking before we speak: the children heard about scenarios when a lack of checking of our writing, information signs and maths sums could all cause problems. Then the children were introduced to THINK, a way of checking that what we are about to say is ―True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary and Kind‖. In this way, we hope to help children use kind words with their friends and avoid causing upset to others. It has been a super week and we wish all BSB families a lovely weekend. Jane Smith HoP Primary Music UPCOMING CHOIR CONCERTS For children in the Junior Choir and the Junior Chamber Choir the end of term is looking to be a very busy one. Cookery Club This term the children in KS1 and 2 have been cooking up a storm in the primary cookery room. We have looked at simple recipes including Top Hat Biscuits, Pitta Pizza, Scones and most recently Tuna Pasta Salad. All tried, tested and finished before reaching home! Two weeks ago the children were asked to design their own Smoothie, listing all ingredients and the method for preparing it. There were a few resembling Ice Cream Sundaes and other wonderful desserts but two stood out immediately. Nandi's Nourishing Smoothie containing bananas, mangoes, stawberries milk and yoghurt and William's Splendiferous Surprise which involved blending apples, bananas, vanilla ice cream, milk and caramel sauce. We made both and voted for our favourite using taste and nutritional value as our markers and much to her surprise Nandi (4T) was our winner. Well Done Nandi it was absolutely delicious! Dawn Bowskill, Year 3 TA and Cookery Co Ordinator
BSB News: News From Shunyi: Foundation Stage What a great week we have had. The highlight has to be the music workshop – where the children performed amazingly well for their parents. Thank you to Mrs Mitford for all her hard work, it was great! In Pre-Nursery children have been learning more about clothes. They have practiced doing buttons and zips, dressed dolls, talked about different clothes for example party clothes, tried on lots of hats and finally on Friday they enjoyed a fashion show wearing clothes from different countries. They also made bracelets and necklaces for themselves from plasticine. In Nursery children learnt the number 5 in a variety of fun and interesting ways including hand and foot printing. They also worked on their topic of ‗Opposites‘ including running fast and slow, painting in black and white, and seeing which objects float and sink. Reception classes learnt all about mini beasts which proved to be a really interesting topic. The children made a mini beast world, and then loved exploring and investigating the insects as you can see from the photos. They also made 3D mini beasts using paper cups and egg cartons to be displayed in school soon!
Key Stage One Year 1 spent a beautiful day at the Great Wall at Mutianyu on Thursday. The children had been learning about the history of the Wall in the classroom, and so the visit really brought the topic to life. There was much excitement exploring the towers and turrets, and many reenactments of the Chinese soldiers defending their territory against the invading armies ! After ascending in the cable car, the children did really well and all managed to cope with the steep steps and inclines on the Wall. After walking for about an hour, they were all ready for a delicious lunch at the School House restaurant nearby, followed by a snooze on the bus on the way home. Many thanks to all the parents who came with us and helped to make the day so enjoyable! Year 2 completed their fabulous sparkler poetry, and are now putting the finishing touches to a display presenting their published work. Look out for this in their classrooms over the coming weeks! Sarah Ridout, Shunyi
BSB News: News From Shunyi: Foundation stage music workshop We were so very proud of our youngest children in the Foundation Stage on Tuesday. They put on a fantastic performance of animal songs and dances for their parents in the theatre. The children have been working closely with Mrs. Mitford in our music sessions to practice for this and what a fun and exciting show it was! Reception children wowed us with their Little Red Riding Hood rap‌ which included some very rhythmic drumming. Nursery children‘s singing and dancing was second to none, and Pre Nursery children very cleverly mixed singing and counting to show off their skills to their Mummies and Daddies. Thank you also to all the parents who came to join in and joined in so enthusiastically with the penguin finale! We have photos to prove it!! Here are a few photos that we took on the day and we hope you enjoy them. Kirsty Massie, Foundation Stage Coordinator
BSB News: News From Shunyi: Key Stage Two Year 3 have had a busy week. We have started our new literacy topic of myths and legends and the children have been spotting key features of myths, legends and other genre‘s of stories. Can your child tell you the difference between a parable and a fable? In numeracy we have moved on to measuring and have played fun games were the children have to spot equivalent measurements of length and capacity by running to different corners of a room. We have also begun to examine the properties of different rocks, can your child name the 3 main types and how they were formed? We were very excited by our special art lesson from Mr Thomas. He taught us how to make a scarab beetle from clay using the score and slip technique to join our beetle‘s legs. We also scored some hieroglyphics on the base but had to use what we have learnt in symmetry to reflect the scoring so the print was the right way round! We have been handing out lots of certificates this week and are especially proud of Rebecca who earned 3 times tables certificates and her pen licence! Year 4 had a very factual week. In literacy we have continued our work on explanation texts as the unit draws to its conclusion. We have spent a lot of time collecting our remaining facts and using these facts to write our own Roman Army explanations using three different sub-headings: training, equipment and organisation. The children particularly enjoyed listening to each other‘s Roman presentations. In numeracy we have been looking at measuring and time. Cat Hall, Shunyi
In numeracy, the Year 5 children have been continuing their work on decimals. They have been ordering sequences as well as adding and subtracting decimals. In literacy, the children have been working hard, using persuasive writing to great effect. The children were split into teams. Each team had to create a product – an energy drink. They had to create a brand name, slogan and logo for the product. We examined real life examples including advertisements, logos and slogans and used these examples to create our own success criteria. The children displayed great teamwork and the resulting work was excellent. Stephen Fisher, Year 5
BSB News: Secondary SENIOR HOUSE MUSIC Last Wednesday the entire senior school participated in the annual House Music Competition. The standard of music making was very high indeed with many students performing as soloists for the first time. In summing up the event, Mr. Embley remarked that the tiniest of margins separated 1 st and 3rd but Blue house came out on top this time. All houses were required to perform 2 songs with all students performing on stage in addition to their chosen soloists. There were many notable solo performers, all impressing, but special mention should go to our new senior solo stars especially Leonie Buschmann for a mature and confident performance of 2 Schubert lieder, Will Yen and Bjorn Shen for their ‗Perfect‘ guitar and vocals duo and last but not least to Tornado Liu for his dazzling rendition of the Filipenko ‗Toccata‘. FINAL RESULT 1st Blue 2nd Red 3rd White
BSB News: Secondary ASA Wednesday KS3 Art club went to Happy Land Pottery here in Shunyi to ‗throw pots‘. This was a great fun and all students managed to successfully create a pot; there were a few flying pots and rather wobbly results, but in the end I was very impressed our results! Throwing pots can be extremely difficult as the clay can be very wet and slippery; but as you can see from the pictures I think we all got the hang of it and produced some wonderful pots. Charlotte Yearn Secondary art

BSB News: Sports News U19 Boys Soccer vs. DCB A closely fought contest. BSB defended well and broke forward in numbers in a classic counter-attacking style. We took the lead early on thanks to a great chipped finish by Gye Young Cho (Y11) after he latched onto a through ball past the Dulwich defense. We battled hard all over the pitch, and made sure that any chances the opposition got came to nothing. A goal came, however, after a dangerous in-swinging corner for Dulwich resulted in a goalmouth scramble, in which the ball was deemed by the referee to have crossed the line. The boys held tight in the second half, created a few good chances, and managed to secure a point away from home in what was a perhaps the best performance to date. Result 1-1 D. Man of the Match -Jerry Hao Coach Tom Hogan U19 Girls Soccer vs. HISB Wednesday's match taught us many lessons but the most important of them, learn to lose. HISB have won all matches so far this season this season, and one can easily tell why after watching them play; they knew how to play as a team. Hard as it was the result should have a very positive effect on our team. Having said this, congratulations once again to all of the girls, and a special mention to the author of the goal, Katie, who played an awesome game, putting a lot of effort into it! Heads high, girls! Result 1-6 L Girls of the Game -Katie Kester Coach David Perea U14 Boys Basketball An encouraging start to the season. The positives, a fast break that works, aggressive rebounding, improving confidence and willingness to shoot. Things that need improvement include the structure of the offense and the man defense.
