Foundation Stage Sports Day made me wish I was 3 again… You’ll find this week’s edition full of pictures from the great day out. The weather was great, the children loved the sports and I saw a sea of smiling excited faces. Many thanks to all the parents and teachers who helped out on the day…a great success. It was my pleasure this week to welcome Mr. Roland Lomnech from our sister school in Lausanne, Switzerland. As ever with our guests, he was bowled over by the friendly, polite students at Shunyi and Sanlitun. More than this he was a guest judge at the BSB Idol competition. We were treated to some stellar performances and it was very hard for us to choose an eventual winner. You will find details of that event within.

I have issued a letter today regarding the fees to clear up some confusion that had arisen from the presentation of the fees on the website (though accurate the method of presentation was different from previously). I have also asked parent to update contact/billing information.

Next week we are pleased to welcome our new Year 4 class teacher to the school. I will let Mrs. Smith introduce her later on in the newsletter but suffice to say that we searched high and low to ensure we found just the right person of just the right calibre…it took a while but was well worth it! Finally it remains for me to wish you all a very safe and peaceful holiday. Mike Embley

Junior & Senior Chamber Choirs perform for the British Ambassador The combined Junior and Senior Chamber Choirs were delighted to be asked to perform for the British Ambassador on Saturday night at an exclusive St. Georges Day Dinner held at the Capital Club in Sanlitun. The children sang Parry’s Jerusalem, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, and then a range of Beatles songs to a very appreciative audience. Will from Year 11 who is our regular drummer was unfortunately unable to attend at the last minute, however Mr Embley saved the day by playing the drums for us, using chopsticks instead of drumsticks! The Ambassador, Mr Sebastian Wood, was so impressed with the choir that he has invited them to sing for him again, at his residence. Watch this space! BSB IDOL FEVER HITS THE PRIMARY SCHOOL! This week the first round of auditions have been taking place in music lessons on both campuses and the children have been invading the music department during breaks and lunchtimes to rehearse. Mrs Mitford and Mrs Grierson have been so impressed by the standard of entries, they really do get better every year. As always it is going to be a very tough decision deciding which 24 acts get chosen to go through to the second round. The final will be held on Thursday 20th May in Sanlitun. From the Deputy Head, Sanlitun Finally lovely warm weather. Can I extend a big thank you to all those parents and pupils who baked cakes or biscuits for our bake sale. Foundation children had a lovely picnic and Y1-6 children enjoyed choosing their own cakes to eat outside in the warm weather. We raised 4585rmb which is fantastic. The committee who organised the Indian Bazaar also gave the school 22500.00rmb towards our chosen charity. We have decided to put the two amounts together and hand the money over to UNICEF who will be able to use it for the earthquake victims. What sporty children we have in Foundation Stage. It was a wonderful sports day and it was great to see every single child joining in every event. Some rather good movers and groovers. Mr Embley met with the SLT parent society this week to clarify the changes on fees for next year. He will be adding an explanation to the website so that parents will understand clearly what the changes consist of and a letter is also going out. We have some lovely events coming up, so please note them in your diary. On Wednesday May 12th we are inviting all Early Years Dads to come and have doughnuts with their children from 8.15am. On Wednesday 19th May we are inviting all Dads from Y1-6 to come and have doughnuts with their children. It is a lovely way to start the day, meet other dads and spend a bit of extra quality time with your child. We will be organising similar events for Mums shortly. The weather report suggests it is going to be a very hot weekend so don’t forget your suncream. Warm regards Janet Brock

Songs and Stories

Last Friday Nursery A presented the first Foundation Stage assembly of the school year. We really enjoyed showing our Mums and Dads and the big boys and girls from the primary school some of the weather songs we love to sing in class. We all did really well and sang beautifully. Back to our normal routine this week, Nursery have been finding out all about Humpty Dumpty and his unfortunate fall off the wall! We looked at how eggs break and what is inside them, and we discovered why nobody could put Humpty together again. We cooked some eggs – scrambled after their fall, and boiled while the shells were still in one piece. The boiled eggs were a very tasty addition to our snack time and their shells made a great Humpty on our collages. We have also enjoyed other rhymes, making up dances and using instruments to accompany them. ‘I will huff and I will puff and I will blow your house down’ growled all the children in Reception this week as they enjoyed retelling and acting out the story of The 3 little pigs as part of our topic all about ‘Materials and Homes’. We have made our own house for the 3 little pigs and talked about which materials are strong and which are weak. We have been very creative making a variety of houses using lots of different art techniques including collage, printing and silhouettes. During our outdoor activity time we worked well as part of a team, taking turns and helping each other to make a shelter using big construction equipment.

‘1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Once I caught a fish alive.’ Prenursery has been deep sea diving this week as we looked at the little creatures in the sea. We shared a lovely story about Mister Seahorse and talked about how our daddies looked after us. Ms.Vivien brought her goldfish to class for the week and we had fun watching them, counting them and feeding them! We also talked about whether they make good pets. We have been reading stories about

30 APRIL 2010 ISSUE 29

Foundation Stage, Sanlitun all sorts of sea creatures and made a mixed media collage titled ‘Under the Sea’. We combined lots of techniques and materials to make a wonderful piece of tactile work. We were out and about in the playground and Isabel and Miss Ana found a tiny caterpillar. We cannot wait to see if our caterpillar grows into a beautiful butterfly!’

YOUR JUNK IS WANTED

All the children and teachers in Foundation Stage, Sanlitun love getting sticky, covered in paint and making imaginative junk models. To help us with our model making we need your help! We will be leaving a big box in the Foundation Stage foyer for you to leave any junk materials which we can use in our creative activities. We need lots of the following: • toilet rolls, boxes and bottles large or small. (empty and clean please!) • bits of wool, fabric and pieces of interesting material • cotton wool, lolly pop sticks, straws, pegs etc Or any bits and bobs you were going to throw away which you think our children may find interesting! We will find a use for it! Thank you!

Auntie Fat Plob the Alien! Year 1 have been making the most of the sunnier weather this

week by getting out and about on the playground conducting experiments in to push and pull forces, linked with our topic on space. We have been kicking, throwing, running, jumping, and lifting to test the effect of the forces of gravity and of wind. We played parachute games to see how the wind pushed and pulled us and we dropped feathers and weights to test the effect of air resistance on the speed of the falling objects. Our topic of space has led us to think and write about space as well. This week we have begun writing some space poems. We wrote verses based on a poem called ‘Auntie Ethel the Extra Terrestrial’. Here is one of our favourites: (overleaf)

The children had lots of fun writing their own ‘who am I?’ riddles about different animals. They read each others’ poems and enjoyed trying to guess or work out the answer! Everyone in KS1 thoroughly enjoyed our ice cream treats from Mr. Embley at playtime on Tuesday! Nicola King, Sanlitun

Guomao Skyscrapers

Year 4 are all eagerly awaiting their visit to Pingyao, China’s original CBD! In the mean time we set off to Beijing’s CBD so we would be able to compare the two places. In our Art lessons this term we have been learning about perspective and this was the ideal opportunity to put Mr. Smart’s lessons to practical use. After looking carefully through our view finders we set about sketching the high rises and shopping malls of the CBD. This presented us with lots of challenges, but we observed carefully and produced some amazing drawings. Following this we set off down the street armed with our clip boards and started to tally the different types of buildings and businesses that exist around Guomao. Naturally we found a large number of high rises, but we also discovered lots of hotels and restaurants. Finally after all the hard work of the morning we enjoyed eating pizza before heading home.

The Art of Understanding: Reading Comprehension This week’s tip relates to your child’s actual interaction with the text and understanding of the written word. Getting your child to properly sound out words and decode them is only part of the equation. The goal is that you child learns how to understand the words and translate them into meaningful information for use. This is not as linear or straightforward as is the act of decoding, but there are ways you can encourage reading comprehension in the process of enjoying a good book. As you interact with a book with your child, use questions to get your child more engaged in the meaning of the words. Begin with the title. What does title suggest the story will be about? Do the pictures offer any insight to the content of the story? As you read along, ask your child questions that draw out their thoughts, such as: “What do you think is going to happen to (main character)?” “How do you think (main character) feels about what just happened?” or “Do you think (main character) will…” You can also engage your child by asking questions that cause him/her to personalize the story: “What would you do if you were…” or “How would you feel if…” Each of these questions lead your child into engaging with the text and also give you insight into your child’s understanding of the information. With these leading questions, you can know your child better and boost their reading comprehension. Even better, their answers may surprise you or leave you laughing together! Book Recommendation: Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey. This Caldecott Honor book offers many chances for questions as you watch a little girl and a little bear get mixed up on a blueberry hill. Holly Beier

A Message from the Head of Primary, Shunyi

Spirit of Adventure in the Primary School

This week has been a week of new experiences in the PS. Year 3 pupils were out this week on an “Amazing Race” dash through Beijing using many forms of transport as they moved across the city to different locations. Y4 have had a blizzard to contend with at DaTong and then in PingYao high temperatures but, being plucky sorts, they loved every minute of their adventure. Year 2 had their 1st ever textiles day on Tuesday, and we had lots of parents come into school, arm themselves with needles and cotton to help the children create wonderful symmetrical mats. Foundation Stage have had their sports day and how they ran, jumped, rolled and threw – fantastic! NurseryM class have welcomed their new teacher Miss Kate Melillo who is covering for Mrs Massie who leaves today to have her baby. We will miss her but wish her all the best for her new adventure! The adventure continues at the weekend with our first annual “Spring Clean Hike” up Intelligence Valley – many thanks to all the staff and families who have signed up for this new event – BSB is doing its bit to help keep the Chinese countryside tidy. Have a lovely sunny holiday. Jane Smith

Desert Islands & Spiders News from the Foundation Stage, Shunyi

This week in Pre-Nursery, the children continued the topic of Little Creatures with a focus on Incy Wincy Spider. They used puppets to retell the rhyme and made their very own Incy Wincy Spiders out of paper cups and have had fun in exploring handprinting spiders onto a spider’s web for a class display. They enjoyed playing the Incy Wincy Spider shape game with the help from an adult, counting legs on spiders and comparing spiders’ legs with other animals’. On the playground outside their classroom they were seen finding plastic spiders and crawling like a spider on a big spider’s web drawn on the ground. Incy Wincy needs help finding the way up the spout, finding the hidden flies and stopping falling water drops from destroying his web, so they have tried and helped him. They have been having lots of fun in singing the Incy Wincy Spider action song all week along. Nursery children have been introduced the topic about ‘Nursery Rhymes’. This week they focused on the fun rhyme called ‘Humpty Dumpty’ which is particularly rich in ‘language and literacy’ activities including: making props for a Nursery rhyme role-play area; building and printing walls; making plasticine Humpties; and sticking Humpty puzzles back together again. They have been looking at real eggs how they change

when cooked and how easy they break when raw. They made yummy Humpty egg sandwiches in the end! The number of the week is the number 7 and the children have been exploring how to write and draw it through multi-media formation with sand, shaving foam, water, chalks, brushes and pens. They have also investigated the sand pit on the playground outside of the classroom by building 7 sandcastles! Reception classes have had fun in constructing houses out of junk material and boxes. They made black silhouette building pictures and had hot discussions on how we would survive on a desert island! In Literacy have been looking at the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and have drawn maps of the wolf’s journey as well as a WANTED poster to catch the wolf! In maths they have been sorting objects based on colour, materials made from, size, shape and many others. All children in the Foundation Stage have been looking forward to this Friday’s sports event! We are looking forward to seeing the photos! Jade Oak (Pre-Nursery teacher, Shunyi)

A blustery cool day did not deter the teams resolve to do its best on Wednesday. The BSB Shunyi Warriors, Sarah, Sean and SeYoung, with Mrs Kim and Mrs Bowskill set off determind to finish the race. They were hindered before arriving at the Canadian International School by the China Auto Show traffic and even starting later than the other teams did not lower their spirits. Here Mrs Bowskill tells us what the Amazing Race was all about............... Excited we set off from CIS in a frenzy to try and make up time already lost. Taking with us a pack containing all of our instructions, a list of things to collect for extra points, photos to take for even more points and questions to ask fellow commuters. We had to make our way to four different locations in central Beijing and carry out assignments once we reached each checkpoint. Our first stop was Beigingzhan, the Central Railway Station, it was a difficult journey on a very full bus and then a couple of packed subway trains. The journey was difficult and we were surprised just how crowded the Railway Station area was. After reaching

30 APRIL 2010 ISSUE 29

the checkpoint we began our first assignment, recording the vehicles seen in the traffic flow under a footbridge timed over one minute. We made tally chart and recorded our findings on a bar graph. On to checkpoint two, Starbucks in the APM Mall, Wangfujing. After along walk, almost half the way to our destination we managed to hail a taxi only to find that the driver would only take four passengers. Mrs Kim (Sarah’s Mum) volunteered to run whilst we rode in the taxi. Would you believe we arrived within a minute of each other!!!! We took a photograph of the team in the old fashioned cart statue and went to get our assignment. This time we had to make a rough map of the basement floor of the APM Mall. We had a quick drink and went on our way. Checkpoint three was Donzhimen Long Distance Bus Station, the taxi driver was a bit cross with us for squeezing all five of us in the taxi and dropped us off way past our destination even though we did hide SeYoung under some bags!!! We got back on track and found the checkpoint inside the Kenzo Centre and were given assignment number three. A sock! We had to attached the sock to an exhaust pipe of a vehicle that would have its engine running for a short time and think about what would happen to the sock. We had some fabulous ideas too. So we attached our sock to a taxi and asked the driver to take us to the West gate of Chaoyang Park (checkpoint four). This time we ended up at the wrong gate and when we went to retrieve our pollution measuring device we found it blown clean off! We were behind schedule and had to run through the park to the Lotus Lake and check in. No assignment, thank goodness we had no time to lose. We found a final taxi and rode, very slowly with a newly qualified taxi driver, we think, back to CIS. There we handed in our sheets, all the things that we had collected on the way, bus schedules, receipts, photographs and the remainder of the 120RMB (a handsome 50RMB) we had been given to use for our journeys. And we waited........had some group photos taken and then the results were in..... Although we did not win any medals and were not even placed in the top three we all agree that we had an absolutely fantastic time and such an fabulous adventure!

Forces & Yurts!

This week Year 1 have continued investigating pushes and pulls as part of our science unit on ‘Forces’. The children played on a variety of play equipment at school to decide whether we use a push or pull force to move them. The children discovered that some playground equipment required both pushes and pulls. They recorded their investigations in their topic books and labelled their work very neatly. Year 1 were also very excited to have achieved their 100 marble reward which was extra playtime on Friday afternoon. Year 2 have made some wonderful Yurt models and used these

Following this, with the help of parents and others, they had a tremendous time designing and creating their colourful Yurt carpets! The children were very enthusiastic about their new found sewing skills and are very proud of their completed work. Dawn Ross

Stories with Scooby

Year 3 have had a peaceful week this week as they have had the whole corridor to themselves! With the Year 4’s away in PingYao the lower Key Stage 2 corridor has been filled with only our voices. We have had a very productive week none-the-less. In Literacy we have been studying adventure mystery stories. We have read text and watched Scooby Doo, identifying in each the introduction, build up, climax, resolution and ending. Next week the children will begin to plot out their own adventure mystery stories. In Maths the children have been looking closely at their known multiples and using them to solve division problems. Our Journeys topic has been finished off with some fantastic aboriginal art being produced. The children enjoyed the different stages, planning, painting shapes and then ‘dotting’ with cotton buds. The children are now making a class painting on canvas to display in the School. Watch this space!

Movies & Mongols

Year 5 have worked very hard this week, watching, discussing and writing about a short film called ‘The Piano’ by Aidan Gibbons. They tried to work out the plot of the film (which has no narrative or dialogue) and asked each other questions to try to fill in the gaps. The film is put together using flashbacks as a man plays the piano and remembers key events from his life. They then did lots of work carefully constructing sentences and paragraphs to describe the action in the film and to answer some of the questions they asked themselves. They really enjoyed this film and produced some very thoughtful writing about it, using complex sentences and very carefully chosen words. Year 6 have had a great week this week and have finished our revision of non-fiction genres. The children wrote a diary entry (recount) from the point of view of a new soldier in Genghis Khan’s army. Thanks to Stephanie who became a Mongol soldier for ten minutes so that we could ‘hotseat’ her and ask questions about her life. We also wrote our instructions for the magic tricks which we performed last week. This isn’t as easy as it sounds and the children really had to break down each step and think carefully about their actions. To help us remember the features of a persuasive piece of writing the children worked in groups to create a radio jingle, they thought of some great things to advertise and I was certainly persuaded to buy them all! Finally, linking again to our topic work we have been creating a nonchronological report all about Genghis Khan. In numeracy we have been looking at time, including timetables and times around the world. The children have a great understanding of how and why times differ around the world; they were able to read a time zone map to calculate what time it would be in say Rio when it is 13:00 in Beijing. In science we used torches and mirrors to explain how light travels and reflects. We were then able to draw diagrams and write explanatory paragraphs about our findings.

EAL

EAL

We’ve had a positive week in Primary EAL. The children have been working really hard and are progressing well. This week we’ve been working on a number of different areas of English. Key stage one has focused on writing poems and choosing the correct article in relation to vowels and consonants. Key stage two has mainly looked at comparatives/superlatives, modal verbs and the future tense. It’s great to see the pupils so motivated and I hope it will continue in the coming weeks. Secondary Dear Parents, Music has filled the Secondary corridors this week whilst students fine tuned their vocals and instrument playing skills in preparation for the highlight of the week; the Secondary BSB Idol Competition. The afternoon was highly entertaining and all the contestants pulled off commendable performances. In particular I would like to single out the year 7 girls, Mina, Susan, Jenny and Amelie for a confident and well rehearsed performance and Susie, Jenny, Susan, Rozina and Amy for some fine vocals; the year 8 boy band consisting of Sam, Tom and Aden for a solid rendition of ‘All about you’ and finally to Bjorn Shen in year 8 and William Yen in Y11 for fine solo performances. Congratulations to Will who was voted the overall winner of the competition. Thank you to Mrs Parr and the IGCSE geography students for organising and running the Humanities Day event this week; students enjoyed the workshops and responded really well to the peer led activities. Enjoy the Chinese Holiday and the sunshine. Martyn Steel Head of Secondary

Thursday afternoon an excited audience of secondary pupils and teachers gathered in the theatre for the finals of the secondary BSB Idol competition. Many students were performing for the first time in front of a large audience but any nervousness didn’t show as the all contestants performed with enthusiasm and confidence. In the end the judges had a very difficult decision to make. However the final places were as follows; 1st Will Yen - ‘I’m Yours’ 2nd Bjorn Shen - ‘Goodbye’ 3rd = Susan, Mina, Jenny, Amelie – ‘Lupin’ 3rd = Sam Kim, Tom Yang Aden Jung – ‘All About You’

Secondary Art

Drama - Commedia Dell’arte

Year 9 are currently learning about the genre of ‘Commedia dell’arte’ (comedy of Art) within drama. This style of performance was particularly popular within Italy during the 16th Century. Although scenes are improvised, many of the characters used have become regular features within this genre. Year 9s have been exploring how to convey exaggerated ‘clown’ like movements in order to manipulate and engage with audiences. This week students crafted appropriate use of physical theatre looking at ‘states of tension’ and ‘centres of leading’. As we explore further into this unit, students will have the opportunity to look at staging, music, and costumes including masks in order to create a short presentation.

Humanities Day

Humanities Day dawned bright and clear which was a huge relief, as one workshop involved students building their own shelters outside ! Mimicking how the poorest people have to construct their own shelters with materials at hand, students took to the activity with alacrity, proving that they could build a workable, weatherproof shelter (that fits a family of five) out of cardboard, bin liners, poles and string ! no easy task !! All students learnt something about the Millennium goals and came away with some thorny issues to think about. The workshop leaders also did brilliantly well; for some it was the first time they had presented and led a workshop and their confidence visibly increased as the morning went on. Well done to all.
