The summer fayre was our biggest and best ever. Well over 1500 visitors came and enjoyed the sun, the games, the food, the music, the water (lots of water!) the karting, the raffle and lots and lots of M&M’s (no one broke the record though…perhaps next time!). It was a great day. There are a huge number of pictures in this special edition of the newsletter so I will let them do most of the talking. Just one last thing though, we’re already planning next years and it will be even bigger and better still. We are even hoping to secure a few very special guests… The FOBISSEA (Federation of British International School, South East Asia) games took place last week with our athletes competing in a number of events. I’ve seen many of them proudly toting medals and trophies. A full report will follow. I also watched two soccer matches on Sunday and can report one win and one close run thing. I spent much of last week in the UK attending the COBIS (Council of British International Schools) conference in London. It was an excellent event and allowed us to stay up to date with the developments in education all over the world. Just as importantly it gives us access to a huge range of training for our teachers which is vital for them to stay at the very peak of their profession and serve our students. FOBISSEA also offers us great opportunities in this regard and Julie Ng (our academic training coordinator) will be attending a FOBISSEA conference devoted only to improving training and professional development opportunities for teachers in June. In a similar vein two or our teachers, Christian Bishop and Christine Armstrong, are now well into their course at the UK National College of Schools Leadership (NCSL). This is a very rigorous, demanding and extremely valuable course and I know they have both benefitted hugely from it. I am now reviewing applications from a second cohort of teachers for this year’s intake to the staff college and the NCSL. A lot of acronyms in this letter I know, but I wanted to demonstrate in real terms the greatly enhanced focus on staff development and training that we have committed to throughout the school. This focus will continue next year and for many years to come, it is a vital aspect of the school and one that translates directly into action in the classroom. Next week (once the ink has dried!) I hope to have some news on some of the new staff who will join us next year. It’s been a very long process and we have interviewed a very great number of candidates. We only have a few staff leaving us this year but our steady growth has meant we are expanding. Much like the new pupils joining the school we have to be very careful to manage the process so as to ensure that the character and essential nature of the school continues to be as we would want it to be. Janet and Jane have extremely tough criteria for new staff in the Primary school! Martyn and I have just as tough a set of criteria for new secondary school teachers, and especially potential new heads of Secondary. More on this next week. Have a great week. Mike Embley

Great Wall Charity Run On Saturday 15th May, five brave teachers and teaching assistants, Mrs. Dawn Ross, Miss Erin Severy, Mrs. Geraldine Thomason, Mrs. Dawn Bowskill, Mrs. Marie Bell, and Miss Kate Dudgeon, set out at 4am to travel to the Great Wall at Huangyaguan, about two hours from Beijing, by car. We had all signed up to run either 5km or 21km of the Great Wall to raise money for charity. Although the weather was predicted to be 29 degrees, and we were all feeling quite nervous about running at this notoriously difficult event, we were all quietly confident that we would complete the run in the times we hoped. All of us did very well and wore our Great Wall medals proudly on the way home, whilst nursing our sore leg muscles! On Tuesday 18th May BSB showed their support by coming to school wearing sporty clothes in a whole school non uniform day. We will shortly be announcing how much money was raised in total by the non uniform day and by staff generously sponsoring the Great Wall runners. The total amount raised by sporty non uniform day and staff sponsoring the Great Wall runners was a fabulous 9,200rmb! Dawn Ross

PRIMARY BSB IDOL

ISSUE 31

The much anticipated BSB Idol Finals were hosted by our Sanlitun campus this Thursday afternoon. A total of over 500 children from both primary campuses came together to watch the 12 different acts that ranged from Kungfu, to vocal solos, to a Thriller dance to bands of children as young as 8 and 9. The children were required to prepare their act themselves, with only minimal help from staff and parents, and the standard this year really was higher than ever! The panel of distinguished judges (Janet Brock, Jane Smith, former Deputy Head of BSB Mark Thomas, BSB singing teacher Kerry Holahan, BSB piano teacher Kay Merriam and guest dance teacher Tai Yang) had the very difficult decision of choosing just one winner and 2 runners up: 1st place - Frederico Y5, Ricky Y3, Kungfu Performance 2nd place - Marcell Y5, The Witches 3rd place - Mynn, Charlotte, Maria, Alissa, Nefertiti, Julia, Y2 Here Comes the Sun A massive congratulations and thank you to everyone who took part in the competition! From the Headmaster, Sanlitun Dear All, Another busy week at the Sanlitun Campus. 212 doughnuts were eaten on Wednesday at Doughnuts with Dads! It will be lovely to see Mums and Dads on Wednesday 26th in the main campus from 8.30am till 10am where Y1-6 will be having an Open Morning and on Thursday 27th in the Early Years Campus from 11-12noon where PN to Reception will be having Open Morning. This week our Security Guards have started their training with Daniel Pinkskowski our Martial Arts trainer and will have 10 sessions weekly followed by refresher courses every month. Our teachers and TAs attended a self defence course last week as well which gave them the basic skills needed to defend themselves in set situations. BSB IDOL was held at our campus and the 12 finalists were extremely talented making it very difficult to choose the winner. We were very proud of Marcell in Y5 and our group of Year 2 girls from Mrs Godber’s class who came second and third. Thank you to all those parents who wear their pick up card everyday. I can’t stress strongly enough how important it is that all parents or carers remember to bring their card as it makes the system we have put in place run smoothly. I hope you had an enjoyable weekend and I enjoyed seeing many of you at the summer fayre on Saturday. Janet Brock

Firefighters!

Foundation School is looking forward to Summer by being healthy and in great shape to enjoy the great outdoors. Reception have learnt that eating healthy is not the only way to stay healthy. We were able to tell ‘The Little Princess’ why it is so important to wash our hands and when we should do this. Drinking water, exercising and brushing our teeth are other ways we can also help our bodies to stay in tip top condition. Keep a look out for our Handa’s surprise basket with paper mache fruits which will appear in our library soon. Nursery continued the topic on Nursery rhymes this week. We have been singing lots of different rhymes with the actions and even thought about alternate endings. Some were very funny! It has been so nice to go outside and enjoy lots of different activities. We investigated slopes, thinking about Jack and Jill and marched up and down whilst singing the Old Grand Duke of York. It was a great workout, all the marching! Tuesday was a particularly busy day making a Beijing building. Nursery A made the Water Cube and Nursery D made the Temple of Heaven! After learning to take good care of our teeth last week, Pre-Nursery learnt about fire safety this week. We shared stories about firefighters and looked at the various equipment that they use to help put out a fire. We made fire trucks and buildings out of boxes and used colours like red, orange and yellow to paint flames. We also looked at the mail carrier, did mark making on paper, put them into envelopes and posted them at the mail box. Mrs. Shanthi Rinaldi Pre-Nursery Teacher

EAL

It’s been a busy week in EAL this week. All the students have been working really hard this week. This week the year one students have been working on the building blocks of English language. The year two students have been preparing to write a non chronological report about badgers. The year 3 students have been working hard on phonics. The year 4 students have been finishing their playscripts and talking excitedly about their recent Pingyao trip. The year 5 students interviewed (imaginary) people who built the Panama Canal and asked them very interesting questions before writing up their reports! Our tip for this week: keep using your remember books. They are your personal dictionaries. Every time you hear a word or sentence you don’t uinderstand. write it down in yoru remember book. Then you can look it up in your first language and write it in your book. Your remember books are very useful-don’t forget to take them with you every day. Kaz Michalak

Sports PE Sanlitun

This has been the final week of the current swimming lessons. The children have shown great progress in the water and have enjoyed their lessons. We have covered all strokes and some water safety skills. Next week sees the start of our final round of swimming lessons. Early Years are very excited about their swimming lessons with Mrs Nicola Ren and we look forward to seeing them all in the water next week. In athletics the children have all experienced the running, jumping and throwing events. They have all worked hard on their techniques and have been delighted with the improvements they have made in each event. U11 Football On Wednesday afternoon our U11 team travelled to Shunyi Campus to play a summer league match. It was a great game and our players worked well as a team. The final score was 5 - 5 and another match is scheduled in the near future. Handball Our Handball teams have been in action again recently. We have U11’s playing on Thursday afternoon and U9’s playing on Monday afternoon. We look forward to seeing some exciting games and good sportsmanship throughout these games. Lego BSB!

Year 4 faced a real challenge this week during Maths afternoon. They had to build a scale model of the BSB campus using Lego! Undaunted by this difficult task they set off armed with trundle wheels and metre sticks to measure various floors in the building. It was surprising to see how many extra cupboards there were and one group even discovered a secret passage! The measuring needed to be incredibly accurate as this was what we were going to use to build our model. Once back in the class room all the groups had to agree on the scale of the model, and then the building began. We were impressed by the teamwork and organization of each group and different rooms began to take shape. Following this, actual floors started to appear and each group was able to model their part of the school successfully. It was a fabulous afternoon and really got everybody thinking as well as having a lot of fun in the process. Jan Watt, Year 4 Sanlitun

Jack & Jill!

Foundation Stage have had great fun this week! There was an exciting Maths and Science Day, followed by a non uniform day to raise money for charity. Reception children started the week with a morning of Science. They had to plan and make a shelter or den using a blanket, chairs and the outside equipment. The children had an amazing time, working as teams and trying to make the best shelter they could. The Maths afternoon consisted of fun with repeating patterns. The children used peg boards, cubes, threading and colour pencils to make different patterns. The rest of the week was spent raising money for charity by wearing home clothes for the day and completing their ‘Keeping Healthy’ topic. The children are now experts on how to keep their bodies clean and healthy! In the Pre Nursery the children celebrated Maths and Science Day by building structures using foam and wooden blocks. They made some incredible towers! The children have also been busy cooking some delicious cookies and enjoying the sunny weather as they had their second swimming lesson. Pre Nursery have also been continuing to learn about ‘People who help us’, focusing on a policeman, fireman and a chef. Nursery have been having fun with Nursery Rhymes. The children have been making a cardboard well for Jack and Jill, while making some bandages for Jack’s sore head after he falls down. Maths and Science Day was exciting in Nursery, the children made a giant marble run and enjoyed watching the colourful balls rolling down. Nursery have also been cooking up a storm and making some baked potato mice to go with the rhyme ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’. Mmmmmm!

Kate Greenaway Medal

The Kate Greenaway Medal Children across the Primary School at BSB have been busy reading the eight books short-listed for the annual Kate Greenaway Medal. This is awarded in the UK for distinguished illustration in a children’s book, and is named after the popular nineteenth century artist known for her fine children’s illustrations. The children are being introduced to each of the books during the next six weeks, and are being encouraged to give their opinions, review the books and ultimately decide on their favourite. As part of the process, BSB has signed up to the official shadowing site, where we are able to post reviews, read reviews from other schools, and follow the judging process more closely. For more information, or to read some of the children’s reviews, visit the shadowing website at: http://www.carnegiegreenaway.org.uk/shadowingsite/default.asp. Dawn Ross Literacy Coordinator

Cake (Temple of) Heaven

This week we began with our science morning where we tested how far we could make a balloon move on a piece of string. That afternoon Year 1 constructed the Temple of Heaven out of cake! We especially enjoyed frosting our constructions and eating them after! Year 1 also came to the end of our pushes and pulls unit. We have finished sewing our puppets clothes and are now assembling them. We looked at various toys between 1900 and 2010, and even made our own classroom timeline! We are very excited that we have begun our unit on shrinking stories. Students have imagined what it would be like to shrink to the size of a bug and have watched some movie clips to help us visualize this. We are constructing gardens in our classroom for miniature people and brainstorming synonyms for big and small. Year 2 had a great time on Maths and Science day! First they learnt about tessellations and looked at the various shapes that can make repeated patterns. They then set to work making the famous ‘Water cube’ using hexagons that they drew and cut. They did a spectacular job ensuring that there were no gaps or overlaps, when the hexagons were stuck on the cube. The children also carried out various experiments to investigate how wind moves different objects. This included playing table football with ping pong balls and straws, looking at different materials for windmill sails and seeing how air blown from hairdryers affected the movement of parachutes. They all had a great time participating and discussing the investigations. They finished the day by adding their lego bricks to the whole of Primary School’s Great Wall. Well done Year 2! Also, the children really enjoyed doing various experiments to investigate how wind moves different objects during a special science morning. These fun activities included playing table football, looking at different materials for windmill sails and seeing how air blown from hairdryers affected the movement of parachutes.

Maths Fun Day!

For Years 3 and 4 the week began with a very busy Science and Maths day. For maths afternoon Year 3 created their own nets and then used them to build a model of the CCTV towers. Year 4 used their measuring skills to help build a lego wall around the school. For science morning, Year 3 created blackouts as part of their science topic on light and linked to their WW2 topic. Year 4 investigated paper spinners as part of their learning about air resistance. A big thank you to Mr Oak and Miss Hall for organising the day, which was great fun! On Tuesday we all came to school in our sporty clothes and helped raise lots of money for charity. Year 3 and 4, have also been enjoying, some of the new story books in school, which have been nominated for the Kate Greenaway Award- wonder if we’ll pick the winner again? We rounded the week off by watching a fantastic BSB Idol final at Sanlitun! Congratulations to the Roma Kung Fu boys! This week Year 4 became 3 classes! Mrs Ward’s new class, 4DW, have settled into their new habitat very well and we have all been admiring their new state of the art, interactive whiteboard! In science this week, Year 4 have continuing to learn about habitats and how animals are specifically adapted to their habitats. Linked to this, in Literacy, the children have been creating and designing ,persuasive speeches and posters to persuade people that their chosen animal is ‘King of the Beasts.’ We have also been enjoying some of the new books in school which have been nominated for the Kate Greenaway Award. In addition to all the whole school activities this week, Year 3 have been looking at all the different methods for adding and subtracting in numeracy. In Literacy, they have been sorting out the paragraphs for their adventure stories. In topic they have been learning about the evacuees in WW2. What a busy week for Lower KS2! Julie Ng Year 4 Shunyi

Lego Wall

We had a great start to our week in years 5 and 6. On Monday we had a maths afternoon and had two challenges to overcome; first how to build the Great Wall of China using lego! Luckily we had help from the rest of the primary school. Our own y5/6 challenge was to try to create a replica of the Birds Nest stadium using art straws, we made a great start and worked really well together, we hope to have it finished soon! Watch this space… Year 6 are preparing to take their SATs tests in just a couple of weeks and so we have been looking at some past papers. The children have worked hard to decide on success criteria for different types of writing and then to analyse their own work , thinking about what improvements need to made. Year 5 have been busy preparing for their exciting space themed assembly this Friday. It was great hearing about how our concepts and ideas about space have changed over the last century!

EAL

EAL

The EAL pupils are making great progress. Key stage 1 This week in Key stage 1 the children have worked towards better understanding prepositions in real play situations. They demonstrated a good understanding when given instructions and were able to instruct fellow classmates very well. Key stage 1 has also worked on the rainforest. We worked together to find out where on earth we have rainforests, what animals live there and other interesting facts related to the rainforest. Also, the children composed their own alien alliteration poems. They came up with some brilliant poems and worked very hard. Key stage 2 This week key stage 2 has done some excellent work. We’ve continued to work on determiners and started to move on to more complex examples: someone, somewhere, anyone and anybody which we will continue next week. We’ve also taken a more in-depth look at the past continuous tense and its specific usage compared to the simple past tense. We’ve looked at superlatives and antonyms and we played a number of interesting thesaurus games. Jonathan Chatters Primary EAL Teacher

Secondary

In Chinese this week...

This week, the secondary Chinese class has had several Chinese tea culture lessons. We learnt lots of things such as the art of drinking tea and its advantages. We appreciated many fancy pictures of teapots and also learnt about Chinese tea houses. We found out the different categories of tea; looked at many different types and how to distinguish them by observing the colours, shapes, and smells. We tasted Green tea, Black tea, Wulong tea, compressed tea and Scented tea. Most of the students liked the green tea and the jasmine tea best. We also learnt how to make eight-treasure tea (ba-bao cha) according to the traditional recipe. Everyone had a great time making eight-treasure tea and especially enjoyed tasting it. Here are the instructions for making eight-treasure tea. If you are interested, you can try it at home. To make ba-bao cha, place the following ingredients in a gaiwan: 1 tsp of loose jasmine tea 3 or 4 sugar cubes 2 Chinese red dates 3 dried white chrysanthemum blossom 3-4 wolfberries 3-4 raisins 1 dried apricot 1 dried logan Add hot water, wait for about 3 minutes, and then pour the liquid from the gaiwan into a cup to drink. Refill the gaiwan with hot water up to about 5 times, until the flavor is gone.

SPORTS NEWS Last week:

The boys had a busy day with at the basketball Tournament. To say the boys did not win a game, while true, does not do them justice. They had six matches and every team they played had to work hard to earn their victory. I am delighted with they way they performed, every game they got better and were really close to securing a win. The last two games they were beaten by 2 points and by 1 point -not a lot. Duncan was our Most Valuable Player who took responsibility for the team and led by example. Ben also deserves a mention for his contribution through out the day. Battle of the Books

The secondary reading group represented BSB this week in the final of the Battle of the Books, an interschool book quiz competition. Despite what seemed like a battle of with the traffic on our way to BCIS, our team was undaunted. Competition was fierce with the teams from BCIS, BISS, Harrow, WAB, Lycee Francias, and Yew Cheng all answering questions on over 18 books that they had been reading throughout the year. The BSB team were unable to match their second place from the previous friendly competition at BISS last term, but seemed to excel in the bonus ‘chup-a-chup’ rounds, a matter of real pride for our team members but not so good for their teeth. Well done to all those who took part! Julian Nelmes

Microbes in Year 8

This week Year 8 have been investigating properties of microbes. Micro-organisms are tiny but can be seen with different types of microscopes. They have been researching the structres and functions of the three main groups of microbes: Fungi, Bacteria and viruses. Students discovered that microbes have many use including bread making, brewing beer and wine, making yogurt and cleaning sewage water. On Friday students set up agar plates to see what microorganisms might be living on our skin and in the soil, and whether or not soap really does kill microbes. Next week will will discover what has been living on our hands. Eagerly awaited is also the upcoming interview with a microbe! Dr Massie

Secondary Assembly

Year 7 students made a successful presentation on Expo Shanghai 2010 in the Secondary assembly this Monday. They introduced the brief history of world exhibition and the features of the Expo 2010. Then, they shared their Expo knowledge with a lively quiz and some national pavilions’ videos which they collected during vacation. For the residential trip next month, Year 7 students will go to Shanghai and have opportunity to visit some of the pavilions. This assembly is an enjoyable learning and sharing experience for all of they before the trip coming.
