Welcome ‘Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are and the things you never want to lose.’ There are many such memories in this Yearbook - academic successes, sports activities that brought some well-deserved success to our teams, charity events where the students have made a difference, enjoyable to trips to Italy and London, ski trips – the list goes on. This is a momentous year for BSG as we are celebrating our 10 th anniversary. During the pivotal years between 2005 and 2015 we have grown from 12 students to over 150 with more than 40 nationalities represented within the student body, added secondary and primary sections, expanded curricular and extra-curricular choices and most importantly, forged our identity amongst parents and the wider community. Our students are proud to be part of BSG as the following photographs and articles demonstrate. Thank you once again to Mrs Prior and her team for making this compendium of memories possible. I hope you have as much pleasure going through this as I had. Wishing you all enjoyable reading! Mrs Raji Sundaram Principal

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas

By Yr 7 English

The English Class The English class made everyone a genius-geniuses trawling through La Dame sans Merci for symbolisms, half-asleep, daydreaming, scribbling on Romeo and Juliet to conquer the face of tragedy. Words evading us, we pulled the terms out of their linguistic depths in bright red: Coldfire-an oxymoron; Lennie’s dead mouse-a metaphor. In writing, we lived other lives, as Great Depression farmers, narwhal hunters, donkey racers in Karachi, adventurers watching the sky split open into a thunderstorm, unrequited love in a sonnet. In someone’s world. Outside, grey clouds gravid with rain, trains whizzing past, trees rustling, a cat walking through the window sill. The cat knew that we are going to change the world. In the English class, we lived our metropolitan existences like falling in love or palmed knowledge, accepted than tolerated, each culture an exclamation mark. The air smelled of intellectual ambition. We changed the time, opened windows to let the world hum with our boredom, squashed flies during those drab days, wrote our names on essays to instill our talents. We breathed the world.

A Knocking at the Door

[In a dimly lit room, WALTER, in a grey suit stands by a window gazing into the night, while JOHN, wearing a stained, dishevelled suit and a plain black scarf sits in a leather armchair with a look of despair on his face. Stacks of paper and books litter the room in organised chaos.]

WALTER: John this can’t go on. (He turns to face JOHN) It’s been two months. (JOHN shakes his head and fiddles with his scarf.) WALTER: People are starting to notice. They’re worried John. I’m worried. (JOHN mutters something inaudible) WALTER: (sighs deeply) John, Maria wouldn’t wanJOHN: (jumps from his chair with wild eyes) Don’t say her name (he shrieks) don’t you dare utter her name! WALTER: (regards JOHN calmly) She’s gone. You have to accept that. JOHN: (sits down again and shakes his head) Not gone, not gone (he mutters in a frenzy, tugging his scarf) She will return to me. I know it. She said she would. WALTER: What are you talking about? JOHN: (looks up at WALTER grave and serious) You won’t believe me Walter. WALTER: (frowns) I’m your closest friend, John. Of course I’ll believe you. JOHN: (looks unconvinced) No Walter, you’re too wrapped-up in the world of the living. You can’t see the world of the dead.

WALTER: (looks hesitant) You sound insane (laughs uneasily). JOHN: (smiles and strokes his scarf) I’ll tell you anyway Walter. Even though you won’t believe me. I know what killed Maria, you see. WALTER: John, we all know what killed her. It was a wild animal. JOHN: (shakes his head firmly) No, no, no. That’s what it wants you to believe. But it wasn’t. It wasn’t. I know the truth. I know. I was there, so you see I know. WALTER: (looks at JOHN with concern) Maybe you ought to rest dear fellow. When was the last time you got a good night’s sleep? JOHN: (ignores WALTER and plays with the edge of his scarf distractedly) It was a full moon, and we were walking through Hyde Park, Maria loves walking at night. And I could see everything. Everything. Everything. And I saw him. It. Him. The Lord of Death, I suspect he was. Yes, must be. And he saw Maria and his eyes darkened with evil. Putrid. Filthy creature. Filthy. Filthy. Filthy. (JOHN spits out furiously). WALTER: (takes a step back) John. Calm down. You aren’t well. JOHN: (giggles) Mad. You think I’m the mad one! But I know the truth. It’s you who’s living a delusion, Walter. I saw the creature tear open her neck and oh the blood! Ruby red. Red like rubies, red like wine. Wine for the dead! And Maria screamed and screamed she did. And ran and ran did I. I ran away far far far. So far so fast so far. WALTER: Stop it now John! (Yells fearfully) You’re sick. Let me help you. JOHN: (laughs hysterically) Help me! Help me! I didn’t help her! I left her like the coward I am. John the Cowardly! Mad Cowardly John! (He cries gleefully tugging his scarf). WALTER: John you should know, I’ve called the doctor; I’m getting you help!

JOHN: No, no, no. Walter let me tell you something. Let me tell you. I know a secret. (He scoots further out of his seat and leans closer to WALTER, lowering his voice to just above a whisper). Maria…she’s coming for me. She told me so in a dream! Beautiful dream. She kissed my neck and it burned like fire. See? (Pulls his scarf down, revealing two small puncture wounds with blackened edges of decaying flesh). WALTER: Good God man! What are you doing to yourself? (Cries out in distress). JOHN: Fret not, dear Walter, don’t you fear. Maria told me you see. She’s coming for me tonight. And she will make me immortal! We will live all of eternity together! Living death forever! WALTER: (eyes widen in sorrow) Oh John, my poor dear fellow. JOHN: (grins dementedly) Oh Walter (he echoes) my poor dear fellow. I knew you wouldn’t believe me. It’s okay though. It’s almost time. She’ll be here soon. WALTER: (shakes his head) No she[The clatter of horse hooves outside the window makes WALTER turn to see a carriage with the words ‘The Bedlam Mental Institute’ painted on it.] WALTER: (sighs sadly) Oh John. [A soft knock at the door] JOHN: (grins) Won’t you open the door, Walter? My fiancé’s home, and I think she’s hungry.

A2 COURSEWORK EXTRACTS Short Story on Insanity: Daniel Nazarov Happiness is air, and what man needs is to breathe, to breathe, to breathe, dear reader! Yet there are those who breathe mechanically, merely for the sake of existing, without existing for a reason. Why do they not see that they must breathe happiness, welcome every breath, and use the air which was given to them for the good of their own personal god, who lives inside our hearts and dies in our minds? Breath should not be automatic, but voluntary; a desire, not a necessity! But I am writing empty words, perhaps to waste time before defeating the fear of not breathing (I guess the same goes with the title of this letter, which took me a quarter of an hour to bring onto paper). Hence, allow me, dear reader, to proceed to the point of this suicide note‌. ‌And now, dear reader, I must bid you farewell. Fallen is Babylon the Great, my priesthood was always an automatic process, and my soul has long been devoured by emptiness. Jesus ordered the Demons to enter the swines. You, dear reader, and I, are the swines. We have, indeed crucified our God, and his teachings have become too rational to love. We will drown in our demonic thoughts.

World Book Day

Let the competition begin!

Our Trip to the Natural History Museum On Tuesday, 27th of January, we went to the Natural History Museum in Geneva. The museum was about animals and precious stones. (Most of it was about animals.)When we arrived there, we hung our coats on the pegs and we kept our lunch under it. After a few minutes of waiting, our guide arrived. His name was Laurent. He told us that they were renovating the museum for a new exposition and that we should not touch the walls or else the paint will come on our hands. The first thing he showed us was a stuffed bird called the ‘Swift’. It’s latin name is ‘apus apus ‘. It’s a bird that never touches the ground. (Except for the female, to lay her eggs.) Then we saw a stuffed vulture that lived in the mountains of Switzerland. They had red rings around their eyes and people thought they would eat their babies but actually the bird eats bones. The bird is extinct in Switzerland. We also saw a huge owl known as an ‘hibou’ in French. We also saw a tiny owl that is known as the ‘chouette’. It’s also a French word. There was a bird that looked like a mouse when its wings were tucked in and looks like a butterfly when it flies. Lots of birdwatchers from England like to come to Switzerland to see it. Finally there was a bird called the ‘Ivory Gull’. It was shot at Lausanne around 50 or 60 years ago. It’s from the North Pole and eats Polar Bear droppings. It belongs to a museum in France. When our tour finished Laurent told us that if we ever find a dead bird that isn’t completely crushed and disfigured we should bring it to the museum so that they can stuff it and put it in an exposition. Then we looked at some other animals and we ate our lunch there. Lastly we packed our things and went back to school. We arrived just in time for the lunch break.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Year 2! This academic year has seen Awards given to successful candidates from year one, and a new group of candidates begin the Award Scheme. In fact the year got of to an early start at the end of the summer holidays with an overnight camp in the Jura and an assessment of the group’s orienteering skills. Following this it was mostly a question of individual candidates finishing and logging their activities, and out of 14 Bronze Award candidates 10 have received their Award. I think this showed that participation alone is not sufficient, determination and organisation are essential elements in the Award Scheme. We also saw the international nature of the Scheme, as one candidate had left school but was able complete and receive his certificate in Barbados. The new Bronze Award group - again 14 candidates - got off to a good start with most of the training already completed and many of them close to completion with their individual activities. It is obvious that the staff running the course also learned a lot from the first year and modified the ‘in school’ administration of the Scheme accordingly! This brings me to the thanks: to the candidates who express diligence and enthusiasm; to staff members who have helped in tutoring activities: to the much missed Ms.Tuplin for her efforts last year; to the much appreciated Ms. Mesa for her help this year; and of course to Mr. Wiseman, as none of this would be possible without his competence and willingness to give up his time to help others. All of the above embody the spirit of the Award Scheme and remind me why we embarked on this journey in the first place. Paul Dawson.

Year 5/6 visit to CERN

As you might have read in the press, CERN re-started its main accelerator, the LHC in April 2015, after 2 years of maintenance and update. The LHC’s underground detectors will compile a wealth of physics data during the next 3 years. As a matter of fact, the detectors will not be accessible anymore. With its 22m length, 15m height, and 14,000 tons weight (twice the Eiffel Tower), the view on CMS is supposedly breathtaking! Year 5/6 were very fortunate in having been invited to an Exceptional Visit of CMS experience, 100m underground, on Monday 16th February. This was the final opportunity to visit CMS for the next 3 years. Our visit included explanations and demonstrations on the surface installations, and the visit of the control room.

‘One day our school had a trip to CERN to go deep, deep down underground to see the kaleidoscope which is a hundred metres down. We went by school bus to CERN. When we got there our guide was waiting for us to show us around CERN. We took a very big and fast elevator all the way down 100m underground. We arrived underground then our guide was taking us down to the accelerator, on the way we passed through many cables and computers and many, many more types of technology. When we arrived at the accelerator it was awesome. It was a huge and technical circle that is full of cables. There is a tube that goes through both accelerators and protons go through that tube so they try make the protons collide.’ by David Milicevic

THE ANIMAL PARK! In the morning all the non-skiers left the school to go to an animal park. We left at around 9:15am. We arrived 9:30am. We had to walk up a lot of very steep stairs which was very tiring. We saw a lot of animals. There were 2 parts of the park. While we were walking we saw squirrels in the trees. In the 1st part we saw wild boars, super cute Shetland ponies, loads of birds, bunny rabbits, lamb, sheep, donkeys and ducks. While we were walking, turkeys and peacocks were chasing us and Ms. Evans and the little kids were scared, it was hilarious. In the 2nd part of the park we saw ginormous cows, more turkeys, a stag, even more peacocks, a mountain goat and marmots. After that we went to a playground, it was amazing. There was a huge climbing frame, a roundabout, an excellent swing, another swing, another climbing frame and little spring stuff. I loved the trip it was so much fun! ď Š

Geography: Renewable Energy - Grand Dixence Dam Year 10 Geography Visit

Going to the Grande Dixence Dam brought smiles to our faces at the start of Year 10. The roaster crowed at 6 a.m. in the morning, at the British School of Geneva. As a stampede, we made our way to the auto bus, which could carry all 13 Year 10 students (plus Mr. Lille). The field trip was six hours long, but it was worth enjoying the stunning scenery of Valais in Switzerland. We arrived at the bone-chilling bottom of the dam, where we climbed a steep hill to look at the timeline of the dam and how everything works. We entered via a tunnel. The tour guide was kind enough to show us an exclusive clip of the construction of the Dam. To get a closer look at the dam and a higher view of the environment, we all crammed in to a blue cable car to the top, which was quite scary as nearly all of us are scared of heights. After a class photo on the top of the dam, and a visit to the power station to see the generators and turbines that were powered by the water, we made our way home. Overall, the trip to the dam was great, as it was an explosive way to start Geography. The cool breeze of the dam mixed with smiling and joyful Year 10 students were all the ingredients to brew an exuberant Thursday. By. Conrad.A.Jr

Girls in ICT@ITU Photos!

Molly and Maria win 2nd and 3rd place!!

By Mr Lille

Girls in ICT@ITU A great day out to the ITU!!

On Thursday 23th April 2015 the Year 10 and 11 girls visited the ITU for the Girls in ICT event. We were given our disposable lab coats then were given 30 seconds to attempt to make a duck out of six pieces of Lego. Rather more complicated than it sounds, as in a basic 2D line, there would be roughly 720 possible combinations. However, each piece of Lego has many different ways of connecting to the next, bringing the total number of possible outcomes into the ten thousands. When you add in the fact that it’s 3D you have millions of possible ways of connecting the Lego. You then need to figure out which of these form a duck. Probably easier to just work from the imagination! Our group soon separated and half of us attended the satellite workshop. Needless to say, satellites are hard. Our group was shepherded through the exercise by a woman who was surprisingly patient considering we had no clue what we were doing. The app-design workshop proved more successful and we all came away feeling fairly pleased by the results. Lunch was quiet, but we all enjoyed it because, you know... free food. The afternoon was more relaxed; our group starting off with a short video. It explained how a man had turned a cheap $60 phone, an LED torch and a pair of speakers into a projector for schools that couldn’t afford a proper one. He also made an ingenious device that, using an old alarm clock and a few pre-programmed computer parts, could tell a medical worker whether a patient needed to seek urgent, basic or no treatment. This can save much money and time as minor cases can be solved locally whilst the major ones will hold the immediate attention in the hospitals.

Next came the mentors, who discussed their career history with us, then explained how each of our dream jobs would end up revolving around ICT. A computer coder from Google joined in to explain what a typical day at Google is like (it is true, by the way, that they use a slide to go down a floor) and to explain the benefits of understanding code. By this point everyone was exhausted, and finally settled to find out who had won the blog competition. Everyone in year 10 had been asked to write blogs for two weeks before the event, which ended up being more fun than anticipated. Rumbi came in first place, a result she more than deserved! Me and Maria then came in second and third, with all three of us winning an iPad mini presented by Swisscom. The day was definitely worth the exhaustion at the end of it, with a lot being learned. I’m certainly off to learn how to code! By Molly Brown

Speechless

By Patrick Corsame He wakes up on the cold barren floor. Disoriented, not knowing where he is. Then it hits him like a bullet, the fact that he passed out in the tanning booth (UV rays). He runs to the mirror that lines the walls of the room. His skin is as tan as ever. The tanning bed definitely has done its job. Ryker's phone rings, his wife is on the phone (radio waves and microwaves). "I need to see you at home now. And I mean now." Quickly grabbing his clothes he runs out the door into the main lobby of the spa. "Excuse me sir, you're going to need to go through the security scanners to make sure you don't have any stolen items on you,” the receptionist says in a snooty valley accent. Ryker runs through the X-ray without hesitation, but she asks him to stop after passing through the infrared scanner. The IR scanner has picked up extreme amounts of heat on his body. "Excuse me sir, you were in the tanning booth for an extremely long time." She grabs her walkie-talkie (radio waves) and contacts Security. Ryker runs as if his life depended on it, practically jumping into his car. "Maybe some tunes over the airwaves will help calm the mood a little,“ he hopes (radio waves). Ryker turns his GPS on, which gives off a bright display (visible light). Under the bright noon sun (UV rays), he zooms through the green traffic light (visible light). Ryker races home to get to his wife. He drives swiftly into the garage, the fluorescent (visible and UV rays) lights flicker on. His wife stands in the kitchen, microwaving a Lean Cuisine and turning on the toaster (infrared). "I'm dying," she says, faintly weeping. Jessica works at the local hospital as an oncologist who helps with radiotherapy (gamma rays) and helps sterilise medical equipment (gamma rays). She begins to cry and Ryker tells her to look out the window and try to calm down. She begins to cry harder. "I’m dying because the thought of you dying kills me. It's you. That wasn’t a tanning bed. You were getting a CT scan (X-ray). Your doctor has just called." Ryker stands there. Stands there speechless.

Godzilla By Nicholas Yu It was peaceful in the city of Tokyo, music of the radio (radio waves) echoeing through the city, and the light of the sun (visible light and UV waves) shining everywhere. But then, everything changed. The waves of the sea changed; something had changed them, something big. The station near the sea shore detected a large heat signature (infrared waves) in the ocean. They did not know what it was. But whatever it was, it came closer to shore. Bursting out of the water was the almighty Godzilla. A giant dinosaur, mutated with atomic radiation (gamma rays) and with a body heat (infrared waves) of over 1000 oC. It rose out of the sea and went to destroy Tokyo, firing its atomic breath (gamma rays), stomping everywhere. The news about the destruction of Godzilla was sent out over the radio waves to warn people of the incoming danger. They had to stop this monstrosity before it ended humanity! Using photos (visible light) sent over satellites (radio and microwaves) and RADAR (microwaves), they were able to locate Godzilla. If only they had a way to stop it! Using some very specific x-ray technology, scientists studied the skeleton of Godzilla to find its weak spots. They found out that just like us, its skin cells were vulnerable to highly concentrated ultraviolet waves, which could cause great damage to any organic material. They went to the location of Godzilla and sent out a burst of highly concentrated ultraviolet and x-rays, which caused massive damage to Godzilla’s internal organs. The plan was a success, it finished off the monster. Humanity was saved this time‌.. But will we ever see (visible) another monster like Godzilla out there again? And will it rise to try to destroy humanity?

Scholarship

By Rumbidzai Muyambo In a small town, there lived a very intelligent girl named Amy Hill. All she wanted to do was experience life at college but unfortunately her family wasn’t the wealthiest. She enjoyed Physics and was extremely interested in the electromagnetic spectrum and its medical uses. She really wanted to experience all the different frequencies of electromagnetic radiation but never could. Her family decided to get her a simple mobile phone (radio and microwaves) due to her good grades. Every day she would study her phone, learning more about how they worked. One day, Amy heard about competitions in Art, Physics, Biology and Geography on a radio show. She decided to enter the Physics competition, because it had the best prize: a video recorder (visible light) with remote control (infrared). So, the next day she travelled all the way to the city, ready to defeat her opponents and win. The competition consisted of difficult questions like; How do microwave ovens heat food? microwaves of 2.45 GHz What part of the electromagnetic spectrum is used to read CDs, DVDs or Bluray? infrared and visible light What do you use to detect forged bank notes? ultraviolet waves Is there a way of tricking the infra-red detector in a security system? Since visible light is too large to see inside crystal atoms, what type of wave can we use? x-rays Amy answered these questions very well and ended up winning the prize and a free wish, which had limitations of course. The judges asked her what she would like and she replied that she wanted to go to college, without any hesitation. They noticed that Amy was a very bright young girl, who had the potential to succeed. This was a tough wish but the judges tried to make it happen. They got hold of her CV, reports, what she wanted to study and other important information. In a few weeks she got the greatest news‌she had been accepted with a full scholarship to a college on the other side of the country. She was overjoyed, mostly because she would finally be able to go through the airport security (X-rays), learn what can help kill cancer cells (gamma rays) and how radiotherapy works (gamma rays) and finally get a nice sun tan (ultraviolet)!

AS Psychology

By AS Psychology

A Level Psychology AS Psychology: Geneva Airport 21st April 2015 AIM: The Learning Approach says that we learn how to be and how to behave from our environment. Through operant conditioning and learning from observation boys and girls learn what behaviour is considered appropriate for their gender. We wanted to see if there was an identifiable difference in how men and women greet each other. The idea behind this is that men and women will have learned what is an appropriate greeting based on their gender. Thus, we expected to find that men were less tactile than women. Our directional experimental hypothesis was that women are more likely to greet by hugs & kisses than men. Our null hypothesis was that there would not be any difference in the way males & females greet each other. PROCEDURE: We went to Geneva International Airport to observe how passengers greeted each other when they saw their loved ones or friends at arrivals. We used a table where we used tallying to take account of all the different types of embrace (hug, kiss, and handshake) from the two different groups: males and females. Whoever initiated the move first (either woman or man) got a tally. For example, if a man hugged a woman, it counted as a tally for the “man hug” column and if a woman kissed a man, it counted as a “woman kiss” tally. We observed silently and participants didn’t know that they were being observed. Thus, it was a covert observation. We separated into two groups in order to gain a more detailed & accurate observation, this allowed us to be more attentive so that we wouldn’t miss any participants by mistake. It was also an independent groups design as there were two groups (male and female), which were being observed for the same purpose.

Our Independent Variable was gender and our Dependent Variable was the number of tally marks made for the observed gesture. RESULTS: From the data gathered, we saw that men were more engaged in handshakes (17 to 8) and women were involved in kisses (25 to 16). Women also had more tactile encounters than men, with 41 for women and 25 for men. As we were testing for difference using nominal data and independent groups, we used the Chi-Squared test in order to see if statistically our findings were of any significance. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that women were more tactile than men. Thus, gender specific behavior indeed exists and is apparent in both genders. With a chi-squared value of 5.22 and a level of significance of 0.05, we checked our mathematical table and found that our Chi Squared value exceeded the critical value of 3.84. Thus, our findings were of significance and we were able to accept our experimental hypothesis and reject our null hypothesis.

Unipolar depression By Liam Deehan A2.

What is it ? It is likely that you have all heard of the word ‘depression’ at one point in your lives, be it from a friend, teacher or in the media. There are many misconceptions about depression and this leaflet aims to help your understanding of the mental illness in terms of: what it is; how it affects the sufferer; the symptoms; features; potential explanations for it; and finally the possible treatments to help someone with depression. Depression is a mood disorder that features feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, sadness, disappointment, and negative thinking. It is called the ‘common cold’ of mental illnesses because of how many people are affected by it. We are going to look at one type of depression, called unipolar depression, or sometimes referred to a clinical or major depression.

Symptoms of unipolar depression Symptoms of depression are the way that sufferers feel. They include:         

Extreme lethargy: lack of energy and always feeling tired. Disturbed sleep: this can consist of trouble getting to sleep or waking up throughout the night and waking up early. Permanent anxiety and irritability Feelings of hopelessness: extremely negative thoughts Difficulty in concentrating Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, which the person previously enjoyed. Lack of sex drive Suicidal/extremely negative thoughts A loss of appetite may also be experienced by sufferers, therefore there may be visible weight loss

Features of unipolar depression Women are twice as likely to suffer from the mental illness, but men are more likely to commit suicide as a result of being depressed. Depression does tend to affect work and family life, as well as day to day functioning, such as sleeping and eating. Anyone can become depressed at any age, be it a teenager or a 40 year old adult. It is said that the most common ages are between 20-50 years old.

The difference between unipolar and bipolar depression

There is also another type of depression called bipolar depression. This involves the individual changing between two extreme moods; this manifests in being extremely happy and extremely sad. This means that someone with bipolar depression may feel happy and extremely hyper for a period of time, but then it eventually leads to a ‘crash’ and they begin to feel depressed (low, lack energy, lack interest in life, withdraw from friends and family, etc.). Unipolar depression, however, only really involves one mood and that is sadness.

But what causes depression? Many things can trigger depression such as the death of a loved one or a traumatic event. However, hereditary causes (due to genes being passed on within families) must be taken into account. One explanation for unipolar depression is the monoamine hypothesis from the Biological approach.

Firstly, monoamines are a group of neurotransmitters that include serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. The main monoamine involved is serotonin and this is used to regulate other neurotransmitters, as well as being the neurotransmitter that makes people feel happy. Low levels of serotonin can produce low levels of another neurotransmitter, norepinephrine, which is required for a person to have energy and show alertness. Other symptoms such as disruption of sleep patterns also seem to relate to problems with the levels of monoamine neurotransmitters. Stress can also be a trigger for depression and must be taken into account. There is evidence for this explanation with antidepressants being used to increase serotonin levels. However, another biological explanation shows brain differences such as the hippocampus being smaller in depressed people. Therefore, brain differences may be a cause of depression and not the monoamine hypothesis. Alternatively, another explanation is the cognitive model of depression. This explanation for unipolar depression is based around “faulty thinking” being a cause of the mental illness. This explanation consists of 3 aspects: 

Cognitive triad: a negative view of self, the world and the future (as shown below)

Cognitive errors: fault thinking and extremely negative ideas Schemata: faulty thought patterns maybe a result of automatic negative thoughts. A negative belief pattern will make someone vulnerable to depression. There is evidence for this explanation of unipolar depression, such as Teichman et al (2002). They looked at how far a person’s negative self-concept related to their level of depression. They found there was a link between how negatively a person viewed him/herself and the severity of their depression.

The cognitive model takes into account genes, early experiences, learning and suggests that developmental issues can lead to certain thinking patterns and beliefs that may cause someone to become depressed.

How can people with depression be helped or treated? In terms of treatments for those people suffering from depression there is the option of drug treatment.

This consists of the use of anti-depressants which increase serotonin levels because it is said that low levels of serotonin cause depression. Drugs used in treating depression are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). An example of an SSRI is Prozac. This drug is commonly used for depression sufferers. There are atypical anti-depressants which are newer drugs; they target other neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, dopamine as well as serotonin. The third option is monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Although these drugs help sufferers by reducing their symptoms there are several side effects of anti-depressants which include: nausea, insomnia, anxiety, weight gain or loss, headaches, dry mouth, lack of sex drive and dizziness. Therefore, the side effects may be uncomfortable and may even need medication themselves. Before considering medication, you should take into account that the use of anti-depressants has supporting scientific evidence, from the monoamine hypothesis, and has been shown to work alongside other therapies. This can be seen in the study by Kuyken et Al in 2008. It may be surprising that these drugs are actually relatively cheap to produce. There is also the problem that sufferers may become addicted to the anti-depressants and experience withdrawal symptoms if they come off them. Drug treatment is not seen as a complete cure for depression, but the anti-depressants do reduce the symptoms to allow some sort of normal functioning for the sufferer. It is important to speak to your health care provider before commencing any drug treatment.

There is another treatment available that may not involve the use of drugs. However, It can be used alongside drug treatment to help the sufferer. CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) is part of psychotherapy, which is a broad term for counselling. CBT is funded by the government (UK) because there has been evidence to show that it actually works and helps people who are depressed. This treatment aims to help the sufferer deal with depression. It focuses on negative automatic thoughts and trying to change these negative thoughts. CBT aims to help the individual improve their self-esteem. Each CBT session lasts 50 minutes. A patient is advised to go once a week and take part in 6 sessions. CBT may be used along with drug treatment to help someone who is severely depressed.

Tips, advice and support I hope that you have a clear understanding of unipolar depression now and are aware of how serious it can be. It is a difficult mental illness to overcome. Here are some helpful tips to consider if you feel that you, a friend, or a family member is dealing with depression.  You should tell your friend or family member that depression is a mental illness and that they should seek professional help  You should inform them that ignoring it will not help it to go away  You should encourage them to take part in appropriate treatment, but you should also listen to their opinions on the treatment: is it helping them or not? If not, then they should return to their healthcare provider.  Be very sensitive and compassionate. Depression is very common. Listening can be a great help. Primary Ski Trip 2015 - Les Carroz This year the Primary Team took 26 children from Year 2 to Year 6 to the beautiful resort of Les Carroz, part of the Massif ski area. Here are a few recounts of our time away. ‘On this year’s skiing trip we went to a big chalet in Les Carroz. The first thing we did on the day we got there was dog sledging. It was awesome and it was actually one of the things I enjoyed most. First I was really scared and I was whining all the time that I didn’t want to drive but when I was forced to do it I actually found it really, really awesome. I was partners with my friend called Mridula who was also scared. She was sitting in the front of the sledge and when she saw how much fun I was having she was begging for me to let her ride for the whole way’ Alisa Kohlemainen It was my first time skiing so I was really nervous because I thought that people would injure themselves very easily but I managed very well. I was too tired in the beginning but, if it wasn’t for Mrs. Compton I would’ve given up already’. Alushe Nghilundilua ‘When we went to ski I really improved my skiing there. It was one hot day at skiing, I was so hot there that I even had to take off my jacket when we had break. Edi was funny at skiing because he fell off from his skis quite a lot of times, he was the funniest.’ Oseka Akande Alasoka ‘On the last night of the ski trip we had a disco. By the first song Mr Parsons was teaching us some dance moves. By the others songs we were allowed to do free-dance. Some of the boys were doing breakdancing and some boys and girls were just dancing with the music. We had snacks and drinks. It was fun.’ Alexander Beets 60

Basketball Club

Basketball Club This year BSG had a very positive and successful sporting image. The school participated in a number of Basket ball tournaments, one of them being and international tournament against schools as far away as Holland! Finishing at fifth place, the team was satisfied with their performance but some reckoned they could have done better. The school’s main basketball team isn’t the best team around but we did play to our strengths and came out with flying colours. As for the junior basketball team who went head to head with three other international schools in

Geneva, they had a memorable experience. They came third out of the total of four teams earning bronze medals that I think they definitely deserved after all that hard work and effort. In the coming years in the school’s growing participation in other tournaments both the Junior and senior basketball teams hope to improve and expand their skill and knowledge of the sport. However they must remember one thing, - what’s the point in trying if you keep telling yourself you’re going to lose?
