BRITNIE COWLING DESIGN PORTFOLIO

HELLO

My name is Britnie Cowling. I was born and raised in San Diego by a menagerie of lumberman, contractors, and entrepreneurs. I have always been artistic, interested in everything from Broadway to clay. For me, Interior Design is where my upbringing and artistic needs meet. Design gives me an outlet to create, to help people, to learn and compete. When I'm not designing, you'll find me reading a cheesy romance novel or picking up a game of beach volleyball.

CHICK-FIL-A OVERVIEW AND CLIENT PROFILE: This was an international competition put on by PAVE Global Initiative and sponsored by Chick-fil-A. The objective of this project was to create a brand new Chick-fil-A geared towards college-age students. They wanted special attention paid to the history, technology and community. Altering the existing color palette was not allowed.

DESIGN CONCEPT MODERN PIONEERS: Chick-fil-A has been pioneering the fast and casual dining experience since 1947. Like America's most popular fast food chain, college students are trailblazers as well. The concept "Modern Pioneers" focuses on that common connection between host and guest. It incorporates fresh ideas while still keeping an eye on Chick-fil-A's proud history, creating an experience that is both familiar and new.

Diners at Chick-fil-A have the option of communal dining, traditional cafe tables or seating at the bar, where DuPont Corian countertops allow them to charge their devices.

SEEING IS BELIEVING

Freshness and quality are Chick-fil-A's driving principles. Today's college students are children of the information age. They grew up having unfettered access to all of the world's restaurant horror stories. They are a tad skittish when it comes to fast food restaurants. They always want to know "what's going on back there". A show kitchen takes all of the mystery and conjecture out of the dining experience and lets customers focus on freshness and quality. It doubles as an amazing marketing tool that Chick-fil-A is currently not taking advantage of. Letting customers see employees squeezing lemons, pulling fresh baked cookies out of the oven, even preparing real chicken breasts, creates unparalleled customer loyalty.

PROUD HISTORY

From the invention of the Chicken Sandwich in 1964, to the Peach Bowl in 1996 and on, the Chick-fil-A brand has a proud past. This history is important because it allows customers to connect to Chick-fil-A on a personal level. Seeing Truett Cathy's legacy and his accomplishing the "American Dream" is an inspiring story to share with guests. The History Path pictured is Chick-filA's new way of showcasing its history. The hand drawn aesthetic hints at the humble beginnings and the playful culture of the Chick-fil-A brand. With the logo glowing neon in the center of the path, it creates a cohesive image that describes the Chick-fil-A journey.

Iconic red leads guests into the space with red hexagonal tiles, and asks them to take a seat with red upholstered chairs.

The "Food Map" is a new addition to the Chick-fil-A mobile app. Like the show kitchen, this caters to the idea that college diners want more facts about their food. In this app addition, customers will be able to "map" certain items on the menu. This is meant to be a playful, interactive tool that creates conversation and ties into the idea of "freshness and quality".

SINCLAIRE RESIDENCE OVERVIEW AND CLIENT PROFILE: Heath Sinclaire is an astrologer from Boston. Lucca Sinclaire is a costume designer from San Gimignano, Italy. Fully ensconced as one of Hollywood's top designers, she designed many costumes for the 2018 Met gala. Growing up surrounded by Catholic churches and the art of the Renaissance, Lucca wants her home and studio to reflect that familiar childhood imagery. Heath is less concerned with how things look and is willing to give his wife full reign. However, he is particular about comfort, utility and sustainability. Lucca will be using the first floor work space as her atelier for appointment-only clients.

DESIGN CONCEPT THE ARCANE: Arcane means secret, cryptic, or understood only by few. This is true of outer space, God, and even art. In this live-work space, ethereal modernity and hues derived from the cosmos are compared to the historic glamour of the Italian Renaissance. The juxtaposition of antiques and modern forms signify the meeting of old world wisdom and new world knowledge. Through the use of lush materials and strong forms, the interiors embody the mysterious divinity found in both the stars and the high art of ancient Italy.

KODAMA OVERVIEW AND CLIENT PROFILE: The holistic day spa for multiple sclerosis patients is placed at the base of a mountain with abundant wildlife, water features and parklike settings. The spa is owned and managed by the doctor and physical therapist who also reside on the property. They are passionate about reducing stress and outside pressures and providing a tranquil environment. The design of the day spa and the residence must incorporate the importance of nature and its healing qualities as well as environmentally friendly FF&E. Designing a name and logo for the spa is also required. This was a national competition created by ASID and sponsored by the Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library.

DESIGN CONCEPT SHINRIN YOKU Shinrin Yoku was first coined as a healing regimen in the 1980's and has continued to be a practice widely used in holistic medicine today. The instructions are simple: go to a forested area and wander. It has been proven that even fifteen minutes in nature leads to a decrease in blood pressure and stress, and improvement in concentration and mental clarity. The modern simplicity of Kodama is derived from traditional Japanese architecture and design. Figures such as George Nakashima inspired a space that acknowledged the parallels between the great journey humans, flora and fauna all embark on. The materials and finishes in the spa celebrate raw beauty, imperfections included.

BRANDING

kodama

healing retreat

The name “kodama” is derived from Japanese forest spirits. in traditional folklore these small pebble-like creatures look after the trees and have been known to heal weary travelers. They are seen as a symbol of good luck and longevity. The logo picturing an old and gnarled tree represents an unhurried journey to healthfulness.

have a seat All of the furniture in Kodama is fluid in form. Every seat is comfortable, but also has solid construction and a firm cushion so that clients with sore joints or back pain will not have any difficulty getting in and out of the seat.

NO TREES WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS DESK: This log came from a proud 112-year-old oak that had been struck by lightning. It has now been re-purposed into a noble gatekeeper for Kodama .

YOGA STUDIO YOGA CANOPY The ceiling design in the yoga studio was derived from a phenomenon called "crown shyness" that happens when the canopies of trees avoid touching each other. This creates river-like spaces where the sky peaks through the forest canopy. In Kodama, glowing orbs take the place of the sky.

HARBOR TECH RETREAT OVERVIEW AND CLIENT PROFILE: The 8000-sq.-ft. North Park facility was previously a senior center. To the south of the site is a playground and school. To the north is a soccer club that often uses the adjacent open grass area for exercise and play. To take the place of the existing senior center, a new facility will accompany the existing presence of youth-centered activity. The Harbor Tech Retreat is a center based on aiding the cognitive development in children who are harmed by screen overuse. At the Harbor, children who are suffering from technology addiction will undergo therapy centered on play and learning that treats the symptoms of technology overuse. In addition, this non-profit facility will serve as an educational hub for parents in the community wanting to learn about the effects of technology use.

PROJECT STATS SOFTWARE USED:

DESIGN CONCEPT THE HARBOR: The juxtaposition of the refuge of the built environment and the prospect of the open sea inspired the design of the retreat. The stark contrast of a dwelling on the shore and the freedom of the ocean is a metaphor for the modern day struggle between technology and nature. Motifs derived from the adventure of the ocean and the warmth of a seaside shelter will dominate the space. The aesthetic will be comprised of materials that emulate the well-worn patina of seaside fishing communities accompanied by spaces that capitalize on nature and natural sunlight.

PLAY AREA Children who suffer from technology are often reluctant to go outside. The indoor play area gently invites children outside, where they engage in physical and social play. Another issue with technology addiction is that it causes a lack creativity. The play structures themselves have ambiguous affordance in order to encourage imaginary play.

Converted assembly space

In the library, custom seating of various shapes and sizes can be arranged in any way the children please, giving them ownership of the space. When not in use, it tucks neatly into the reading nooks. Assembly chairs are rolled in to convert the library into a seminar space for adult education on childhood technology addiction. Having a place where children feel safe and welcome offers the chance to nurture relationships with their peers.

amytis garden society OVERVIEW: Due to the 2008 recession and the emergence of internet powerhouses like Amazon, malls all over the country are closing their doors. These vast, abandoned sites often become centers of crime, bringing down entire communities with them. Many builders are repurposing ghost malls into mixed-use centers, or "21st century neighborhoods".These projects combine retail, housing, office space, and "neighborhood" facilities like grocery stores and pharmacies. Amytis Garden Society is based in Fashion Valley Mall. The project will aim to alleviate San Diego's affordable housing dilemma by building dwellings geared towards moderate incomes.
