黑家族史反革命歷史 Black Family history is Counterrevolutionary History
Jiang Ji-li may fool you into thinking she is a normal revolutionary, but she is not! She is a teacher-loving black! Her family is counterrevolutionary, and her ancestors are landlords. Her aunt, the hated Xi-Wen is a plastic, makeup wearing southerner. Ji-li has also been accused of having a relationship with a teacher. No wonder she has such good grades! The Cultural Revolution could do WITHOUT a horrible family like the Jiangs! 姜其利無益於改善中國擺脫破四舊的。 該江的是壞的黑人!

I, Teacher Wei I am a victim of the Cultural Revolution. I wonder if I will come out alive. I hear the Sound of Drums and Gongs. I see propaganda about me everywhere. I want to be free. I am a victim of the Cultural Revolution. I pretend that this is all a nightmare. I feel the blows to my face continually. I touch the sign on my neck calling me a black. I worry my daughter will break ties with me. I cry of pain from the wounds of the struggle meetings. I am a victim of the Cultural Revolution. I understand that I am a horrible person. I say what they tell me to. I dream of a life away from China. I hope I do not burn as I climb the chimney. I am a victim of the Cultural Revolution.

Grandma Cao 1967 Dear Diary,
I am so afraid for my granddaughter, Ji-Li. Primary schools used to be EDUCATIONAL before the revolution. Now “education” is what Mao wants them to learn. I am afraid she will begin getting picked on by Red Guards. Even more I worry all her classmates will dislike her, since she refused to audition for dance. Ji-Li is not very happy about my son’s decision for her, either. 1968 Dear Diary,
Oh, no I must comfort Ji-Li. She is done with primary school, and it is almost time for her to go to junior high school. Due to the new teachers place students in their school system, Ji-Li was to go to Shi-Yi, but the government changed it so now she has to go to a county school with all her primary school friends. 1967 Dear Diary,
Ying-Chen has hidden a letter, but the Rebels have come to find it. The letter criticizes the Rebels. Ji-Li hid it, but when asked where it was, she said she knew nothing of it. They slapped me in the face and forced me to kneel down for a very long time. Now, I have to sweep the streets twice a day. At least I have a companion, Xi-Wen.
About the Author I am a twelve year old girl living in Miami. Red Scarf Girl affected me because I now know how young children can be easily manipulated and brainwashed into believing in something or someone that is wrong. I also now realize that family is more important than anything, and that Ji-Li stuck with her “black” family rather than giving them up to be a “child of Chairman Mao”. I think one of the most important morals of the story is actually very relatable to the modern day teen and preteen population. Don’t let anybody tell you to be something you’re not, be your own person, no matter what everybody has to say about it.
